I've heard that the blood mage specialization is ridiculously strong in this game. The first specialization I'm taking in force mage, then I'm deciding between spirit healer and blood mage. Obviously, I'd like to deal more damage, and some of the spells look awesome, but it would be sapping my Hawke's health, and I'm already having problems keeping her alive since, you know, she's a mage. >_< And then on top of that, I won't be able to heal her with spells or potions.

Can anyone give advice from experience?
Did you have problems with your blood mage dying?
Can you just de-activate blood magic, heal, and re-activate it?
Is it as awesome as I think it will be?
Thanks in advance. ^w^

Eh no experience on my end, sorry. But considering how some of the companion mage modes work (Ander's vengeance, and Merril's Blood of the First), I suspect blood magic works VERY similarly to that, where you can just turn it off if you want to cast heal on yourself, but there is a cooldown for sustained abilities so its not like you can just turn it off and on on a whim. I wiki'd the blood magic tree and it looks like it also gives you some abilities to drain corpses and living people to heal yourself which sounds way more useful than blood magery back in Origins where you could only steal health from your own party members. But I dunno how well the cooldown works on that let alone how well it heals.

My first game's character was very anti-blood mage so I naturally figured it'd be extremely out of character for me to put pips in there xD I too am really curious about blood mage strength though... some of the blood mages I fought in-game were ridiculously powered, so I wanna know if I can make my mage that badass scream

I..HATE..the blood mage..in both games....to me it just makes you die faster and doesn't use a perfectly good resource for spells (lyrium) and makes you use the health potions that could be used for your rogues or warriors.

anyway, for Dragonage 2...I found the ultimate combo that makes you unkillable. up magic and wis. get defensive spells and rock armor.. focus on upping armor mostly..and max out spirit healer...you will not die..especially get your hp up to 200..every second you refill half your health... epic... I beat the arishok without any potions at full health

But what about spells like blood slave and hemorrhage? I think it's stupid that the specialization requires you to use your own health instead of mana because mages are already so fragile, and you have to use your skill points to get uselessly high willpower to equip decent armor anyway. But I would still do it if the offensive spells are worth it. The reason I'm playing as a mage anyway is because it's fun to deal out massive amounts of damage. That's a good point about the Arishok though. I don't know what I'll do when I get to him...
Though I think I might let Isabela betray me since I've been trying to keep her neutral so I don't get the glitch. Is it possible to resolve things peacefully (or at least not in single combat) that way? I've always fought him one on one.

@Daemonsparta: Oh trust me, I've been really harsh on blood mages too. But it's my forth playthrough, I don't really care if my Hawke's a hypocrite. I've heard it doesn't affect the story at all. It's kind of funny. Just like how I'll be walking through the Gallows with my gaudy fuzzy robes and a giant staff strapped to my back while the templars talk to me about how we have to track down the apostates, I'm sure Anders and Fenris will be bonding of their one shared opinion on the evils of blood magic while I'm in between them, surrounded by an aura of red.

well in DA 1 it was terrible...just downright terrible. I didn't give it a shot in 2 yet...but I love force mage and spirit healer so much.. plus my combo is me spirit healer, merril for offense spells, varric and either aveline or fenris.. it works out that way.

Oh yeah, I didn't even try it on DA: O because I remember it looked terrible. And I think it affects the plot.
I think I'll try it, and if I keep dying, I'll just take the hit to my pride and turn down the difficulty.

True, but what if I listen to Merrill, or Grace, or Iducca, or just about any other mage in the game? :3
Plus, if I listen to Fenris, or Meredith, or anyone who isn't a mage in this game, I can't hellllp it. I am a mage and am therefore powerless to the seductive call of- Ooh, look! When you upgrade "blood slave", you can make people explode!

Im a mage too and I can make people explode already o.o

Ooh, maybe I'll use Maker's Sigh and take Blood Mage and Spirit Healer. That's kind of a contradiction. I'll be the Starburst of mages! Can I heal other people while Blood Mage is active?
Also, does anyone know how sustained spells work on Blood Magic? I was thinking of getting Death Siphon to restore my health with Blood Magic, but if it automatically saps 20% of my health insteand of 20% of my mana, it kind of defeats the purpose.

@Cruor Corvus: Yeah, I had the fully upgraded Walking Bomb spell on my first playthough, but I kept forgetting to use it. XD
It was a staple in my fighting style in Origins though.

I unlocked blood mage but I haven't been able to fully test it out yet. I just finished with Force Mage and I gotta say, not bad. Very good especially if you want to do group devastation or just keep them off of you.

I actually didn't use Force Mage that much. Usually when I saw a bunch of homicidal NPC's heading for my party, I used Tempest to thin the herd. It's fully upgraded, so the range is about the same as the Force Mage spell that drags everyone to the center. By the time my mage has finished casting Tempest, the remaining enemies have usually all crowded of Fenris like he's made of candy or something. So then I just use my shorter ranged spells around him until all that's left are a few really strong enemies.
But everyone seems to love Force Mage, so maybe I'm just using it wrong. XD

I don't understand why there is so much Blood mage hate (OOCly ofcoures). They don't use mana as much as other mages so you would be smart not to build them as if they did. Take DA:O for example. I had a blast playing my lil'Blood Mage. Granted the play style took a bit to learn but once I respec'd (Mod) to pump in some constitution and looked for actual Blood Mage gear it was very fun.

I'm working on a new play through for DA2 as a Blood Mage and once I get more skills from the tree I'll post my feedback. I'm not playing on nightmare though, so take that into account please. ^^

Ah, I've never even attempted nightmare setting as a mage.
Though, come to think of it, blood mage is probably easier than other trees in a higher setting because few of the spells cover a large range.
IMO, blood mage is pretty cool. As long as you have at least one tank in your party that you can shamelessly siphon health from when you need it, healing usually isn't an issue. I mimicked Anders and took both Spirit Healer and Blood Mage specializations. If you're smart about when you use them, cooldown is rarely an issue.
The thing that sucks most about Blood Mage is that mage weapons and armor require you to have high mana to equip them. So even though it would be smart to just spend those points on constitution, you're still forced to waste points on mana. Of course, even if you don't play Blood Mage, you have to spend far more points on mana than necessary, making it a pain in the a** no matter what.
Also, you have to be in the sustained mode to use it which (if I remember right), in addition to significantly hindering your ability to heal, disables you from using any healing spells on anyone. So that's a pain too.
But overall, Blood Mage is pretty cool in DA II.

A fully beefed up blood mage is a killing machine in easy and normal.
higher difficulty than that...you just might get your a** handed to you.
Blood mage is more or less something you use depending of the situation.
For large crowd control it is perfect to abuse.
For boss that has no area of effect or long distance attacks, it works wonders.
I dare you to go against the high dragon in blood mage mode for fun, even in easy, tho. lol
The name of the game as a mage is AVELINE! USE YOUR CHIN AND TANK! AND KEEP ON TAUNTING!
Also, Isabela "back to back" is a life saver when well used. she poof right side of you.

Hell, as far as I am concerned my new love is a warrior with a 2 handed and to abuse cleave....
Cleave=most abusive power in the whole game.
