I got this leather jacket for five bucks at a thrift store. It made me very happy. But I am not a master in the art of reconstruction, so I'm looking for ideas on what to do with it. Any sort of steampunk look would do; my wardrobe is so underdeveloped that I'm not picky ^^;; The only thing I've done is seam-rip the arms off. It's a little small on me, so I had to. Otherwise I couldn't move. Huzzah for akward bathroom mirror photos! And akward bed photos! I like the lining. It's shiny. I'm immature. I like shiny. At the risk of being overly comprehensive, here's the arms and belt-tie-strip thing, too. Just to show the extra leather I have to work with. At the risk of being random, one of my ideas is to put another button near the top to create a Mandarin collar. I couldn't get it to stay put long enough to take a picture, but here's the general idea. Only probelm is the lapel isn't perfectly straight, as is often the, so it could look a little odd. Ideas? Second question: Do I need a haircut?

I love it the way it is, but there's also a lot of stuff you could do with it. Try out different buttons or pins or trims. If you're ambitious you could do a corset-back or a series of buckles along the back.

Corset back...I like that idea. Could be hard to pull off, though, as it's already a bit small. I do have a stash of brass rivets that I stole from my dad that I have yet to find a use for. I need to get around to making a corset...
Buckles are good, too. Buckles everywhere! Or somewhere, at least. Definitely gotta find a great big box of brass buckles...
Trims, you say? What exacly do you mean by trims?

Hmm, perhaps some sort of modest spaulders? Perhaps cogs?

Lace, maybe? Or something metallic, like chains. Maybe put rivets or grommets along the lapel or the sleeves.

I would take a nice bit of tea-stained white lace and trim the shoulders around the arms and add nice brass/cameo buttons.

@rackella: Chains are good. I have some chains. I've never been big on lace...well...that's a lie...I love lace. I like to make other people wear it ^^;;
@Kurisu: SPAULDERS! I LIKE SPAULDERS! I have absolutely no idea how to make some, but now...want...
Hmm...spaulders...maybe I could just get some little metal plates and tack them on in strategic places...and I could put some of the sleeve back on, just enough to cover my shoulders...
I like this idea.

Why not make the sleeves wider? Myabe some black stain or something to give them a bell shape and tie them at the top with ribbon?

I like that! And I've been complimented! This is a good day. Arright. Buckles, bracers, and spaulders. I'm on it. (That's a shameless lie; I'm really on English homework. But eventually.)

I very much like that jacket, er, vest as it has now become. I would recommend maybe lining it with a bit of wool so that the trim is viewable once worn. I have seen many goggle with the same concept and a pair would match perfectly. This isn't the best reference of the goggles I am speaking of, but it will do: Clicky

Make it look like it's lined with sheepskin to give it a sort of aviator look. I might try that if I ever get my hands on some sheepskin. I've been thinking of getting some to make a cover for my oboe case. Steampunk oboe case for the epic freaking win... -daydreams off into incoherence-
