Hello!

I'm going to be doing an E-waste presentation in a couple of weeks. I was wondering what the audience (YOU) would like to know about e-waste. What would interest the audience (YOU) about e-waste?

Thanks!

I've never even heard of the term. What is it?

I've heard a lot of it goes to China, but are there any proper e-waste facilities in the United States?

Here's a link to the definition of E-waste and a US e-waste facility called, "CalRecycle"

I "properly" recycle my electronics. That is, I drop them off to designated recycling centres (municipality run, store run) and from there, I really have no idea what happens. If you're looking for ideas and suggestions, I'd suggest:

  • What needs to be recycled
  • What happens to e-waste when not recycled
  • What happens to e-waste when recycled
  • What questions or things to look for for legitimate recyclers (as in, not companies that ship the waste to India for the Indians to burn and scrape through.)

How very interesting that New York is now doing that! But hopefully like you said, they don't send it to India or China so the poor families can be exposed to toxic elements that burn their hands and contaminate their water.

Well let me see, at the top of my head I can answer the question, "What happens to e-waste wen not recycled?" Well they are usually just sent to a landfill in the US or outside of te US. What happes is when it rains, the water leaches out toxic materials from the e-wate and dump it in the soil, which in turn gets dumped into a water holding place like a river or lake. So basically these materials make soil unusable for agriculture and the water unusable for drinking or fishing becuse the fish get contaminated also and it could be extremely more toxic to us through a process of biomagnification (where an element gets more toxic as it moves up the food chain).

As for all the other questions, I will have to do more research.
