Hey you guys, I've got a question for you all who have experience in this area. Hell, even just for people who have advice.
So, I'm on a 2-month long school-sponsored internship. Naturally, I decided to go to a theatre. It's a nice sized non-profit theatre called Shadowbox Cabaret that does sketch comedy and rock music. Anyway, I'm having sort of a difficult time adjusting. I knew all of my high school theatre friends so well that I could hug them, insult them, whatever. But I can't do that with people I just met and I'm kind of afraid that they'll think I'm stuck up or shy, which are two images of myself I'm trying to bury.
I only feel moderately chummy with 2 or 3 of the staff there. Granted, I've only been there a week and a half, but it'd be totally sweet if anybody had any tips to help me become more laid back around my new co-workers. Much appreciated!

I think this is something everyone experiences when they find themselves in a new environment. Almost any time you get a new job, you have a whole new bunch of people to meet. Basically, you just gotta stick it out and get to know people. Luckily for you, you're around theatre people. That in itself will make things that much easier, because as far as I've experienced, most theatre people are, for the most part, friendly and welcoming.

Congrats on getting to work there! It usually takes me a few weeks to adapt to a new theatre and the people. Go to lunch, or coffee with the people you feel comfortable with. Get to know them and once they get to know you you'll start to feel comfortable around them.

Laff at jokes, tell a few of your own
If someone looks alone, go up and talk to them. If no one ever seems to be alone, for heavans sake you are a theater person! Go all out and join a group of people and start talking.
If you are working a scene and it just ended, and you are backstaage or something start up a conversation with someone in the scene by saying something like "You did really well" or something.
Wear a funky hat. Or a top hat, those are fun. People will not think you are shy if you so that
Those are a few things I have tried when I had no friends in a show.
