Tasso was sleeping. Brutus was supposed to be sleeping, but Brutus wanted to play, and how dare Tasso sleep when Brutus wanted to pla-- what was that noise? Curiosity drew the puppy to turn about, tail wagging frantically, excitement in his bouncing steps. Was this new sound a good sound? Crackle. This was a new sound. This was very exciting. There had been many snap snap sounds, and some scrabbling sounds, but Brutus had never heard a crackle sound before. What did it mean? Prancing back over to his sister, he nudged her with his nose.
"TassoTassowakeup! Tasssooo there is a sound! Wakeupwakeupwakeup!" Ears pricked forward, standing straight up, tail wagging up a storm, Brutus tugged on his sister's ear. She wasn't getting up fast enough! "Mmmmphmpphhhmpphhhoo!" What was the nooiiise? What was it? Why was mommy sleeping? Everyone was sleeping! He let go of her ear, and pounced her. "Wakeupwakeupwakeup!" He had heard a noise and he wanted to play and Tasso wasn't waking up fast enough!

Although it had never actually worked to fend off her annoying brother when he got into one of these moods, Tasso did what she usually did: rolled over and tried to go back to sleep. That was before he chomped down on her ear. "Ouch!" She yelped, suddenly sitting up. Tasso glared at her brother and briefly considered whining to their mother that he'd bitten her, but boys would be boys and it wouldn't be the last time, she was willing to wager, that Brutus would treat her like a chew toy. Then of course, he was leaping on top of her, so she wriggled and writhed and did her best to n** him back until she was free of her rambunctious sibling.
"I'm up, I'm up," she grumbled, twisting to try to look at her ear and managing only to make herself dizzy. With a snort, she gave up. "What did you hear?" Tasso was tempted to tack on "stupid" but wasn't sure if mother was listening and didn't want to risk it. Stupid was a bad word. After a moment of listening, it seemed to be the regular noises of night time, and she rolled her eyes at Brutus. "You're just 'majinin' things. It's not real," she huffed, trying to sound like an adult, "It's maple leaf."

"It is not maple leaf! Or 'majinary! It isn't it isn't it iiiiisssn't!" It was real, and Brutus knew it! He'd heard it with his own ears. ... Crackle. "There it goes! See? There it goes again Itoldyouitwasreal!" Oh. Right. Now that he'd heard it again, and Tasso had heard it, maybe they could figure out what it was. "But what is it?" Brutus sat back on his haunches, and patiently waited for Tasso to explain. Was mommy still sleeping? There was a noise. Mommy an' Nox shouldn't be sleeping. What if it was important? Brutus puffed out his chest a little at the thought that maybe he'd found something important. Oh that would be very good indeed!

With a little huff, Tasso glanced back at mother. Sleeping, probably - feeding four mouths was hard work for only one wolf, although Tasso was too young to understand that. Surely she wouldn't get in trouble for taking just a little peek outside the den?
Creeping forward on her belly, ears alternating between the forward press of listening hard and the backwards flattening of guilt and fear, the young female pup shimmied towards the great outdoors to try to figure out what her brother was hearing. Although he was a pain in the butt, he probably had actually heard something - in fact, that last time Tasso could've sworn she'd heard something too.
Outside, an adult wolf much like the little girl in appearance saw her snout poke out of the entrance to the densite. Ralastor retreated back into the forest undergrowth, holding his breath. He'd tracked Layla this far, hoping to find the pups he'd left her pregnant with months ago. There, at last, was the evidence he'd been hoping for. Still, it wouldn't do for them to discover him. He knew, having followed her here, that Layla was inside. Once she left, the little ones would be his for the taking. The large, dark adult male settled down to wait.

Tasso was being sneaky. Tasso was good at sneaky. But Brutus did not want to sneak! Brutus wanted to see the whatever it was! If he sneaked it would take time and then the whatsit would be gone! Bouncing out of the den in a true display of puppyish eagerness, Brutus stood at the very entrance to the den, ears perked forward. "Oh Tasso where is it? I don't see it." But. BUT! But he had smelled it! He knew it was there. Yes it was! He bounced around in a circle before flopping down next to Tasso. "See? I toldja so." Sniffing, he tried to figure out what it was. It didn't smell like a bunny. Brutus knew what bunnies smelled like, because sometimes mommy brought home bunnies, and bunnies were very tasty, yes. He liked bunnies.
Boy, he sure would like a bunny to play with! Tasso wasn't playing, and he wanted to play. Couldn't they play right here? It was a no no, and he knew it, but he wanted to play, and the thing hadn't appeared yet. He had heard it! He was sure that he had, and now Tasso was acting like she had, which meant that he was right. Brutus liked being right. It made him feel good, and he puffed his chest out, and wagged his tail. Were they playing a game? Was Tasso playing? Brutus wanted to play too.

The farther from the den the pups got, the more Ralastor quietly retreated. As much as he relished the opportunity to inspect them for the first time, he had no desire to encounter their mother. Sure, he could beat her in a fight and take them by force, but the longer it took her to discover they were gone, the more time he had to take them away to the place he'd chosen as his territory. That was why it was optimal to take them right after she left to go hunting. This in mind, the father of the unwitting pups crept backwards, intensely aware of every stick or dry leaf that might crunch underfoot.
Tasso, finding she could no longer hear or smell anything of interest, quickly grew bored. Besides, what if the thing Brutus smelled was something dangerous that wanted to eat them? A prickle of fear ran through her, and then suddenly gave her an idea. "I see something. Wait here," she whispered dramatically, and then went off a little ways before circling back and leaping out at her brother. "RAAAAAR I'M A MONSTER!" bellowed Tasso, as loud and monster-like as she could. "I'M GONNA EAT YOU UP!"

Brutus yelped! OH NO! Where was Taaaassssooo? OH NO WAS THAT TASSO? "Tasso! OH NO! Oh no what haaaapppened?" The noisemaker had turned Tasso into a monster! Yelping with puppyish fear, Brutus sped back into the den at top speed. "NO TASSO I DON'T WANT TO BE EATED!" He darted down inside, and ran right up to his mommy. "MOMMY MOMMY MOMMYYYYY THE MONSTER IS GONNA EAT ME!" Oh no oh no oh no! Oh no, what would he do if mommy didn't wake up fast enough? "Mommmyyyyyy! Mommymommymommy! MOMMY!" Oh no oh no, oh no! With pitiful yelps and whines, Brutus made every attempt to wake his mommy up in time. "MommmyMOMMY TASSOOIISSA MONSTER AND SHE'S GONNAEATME!" Oh, the horror!

Layla woke with a start, first Tasson yelling, then Brutus yelping had her awake and alert in a second, she was on her paws but a moment later "What is it? what's going on?! Tasso, Brutus what the ....what do you think you two are playing at? you should bot be asleep" she snapped, eyeing Nox who was just now waking out of his deep slumber, that pup slept too deeply and she worried about him sometimes. "Calm down Brutus, Tasso is not a monster she's your sister and she's NOT going to eat you" although she was talking to Brutus, she aimed the last towards Tasso.
"Mom? what's going on? why are Brutus and Tasso crying out like that?" yawned Nox, he wasn't the quickest minded of wolves but he had time as he grew. He yawned again and turned his eyes on his brother and sister, one ear at a funny angle, tilting his head in slight, sleepy confusion.

"Sorry, mom," Tasso mumbled, hanging her head and dropping the "monster" act. She trailed back into the den slowly, embarrassed to have been scolded, and shot a glare at Brutus. "He started it," the pup pointed out spitefully. "I was sleeping until Brutus woke me up." With one last huff in her dumb brother's direction, Tasso obediently curled up once more in the same spot to try to get back to sleep. Just her luck - it wasn't still warm. Oh well.

"But mommy, there was a noise, and then Tasso went away, and then the monster came," whined Brutus. However, mommy had said that everything was all right, so Brutus believed it. His tail wagged frantically, and he licked her, bouncing in place with his excitement. Both tail and ears drooped a little when she reprimanded him. "Do I hafta go to sleep, mommy? I wanna play." Brutus always wanted to play when he wasn't sleeping, so it was a pretty safe bet that he would want to play no matter what Layla said. "Therewasanoise! Tasso, tell mommy there was a noise, okay?" There was, there was, there waaaas! It wasn't maple leaf or majinary, or anything!

Layla sighed, she never dreamt pups would be so much work but she wouldn't have changed things..well .. maybe their damned father sticking around, she'd had a hard time hunting for a long time, it had been well into the pregnancy before she'd been able to hunt anything bigger than a rabbit because of her shoulder but then by that time she couldn't risk it, as a result Layla was still fairly thin, which was why she slept a lot. Hunting for the pups now they were eating meat, meant she often went without. "Wait?... a noise Brutus? .. what do you mean by a Monster?!" she said, startled. There could be anyone out there, but if it was prey she might take the chance at an easy kill. "Stay here you three ... Tasso ... keep an eye on your brothers" she said, knowing she was fairly good at being responsible when she was away.
Nox lifted his head and looked between Brutus, Tasso and their mother "Goin' outside mommy? okay..." he said simply, curling himself back into a ball while Layla went to investigate the noise.

Tasso's ears pricked up and her eyes opened. Well now she certainly wouldn't be able to sleep. "I thought it was maple leaf, mom, but then I thought it wasn't. Bring me a whooooooooooole rabbit!" Her tail began to wiggle with excitement. She was in charge and mother was going to either scare away a bad thing or bring back a tasty thing. Win win situation! She watched the adult leave, grinning smugly at Brutus.
Ralastor held his breath and remained still as he saw Layla emerge from the den. He had carefully positioned himself so that the wind blew scent in his direction, not wanting the other wolf to catch the smell of him. He hoped and waited that she would wander far enough away - and not in his direction. His every muscle tensed. He would have those pups.

"See, I told you it wasn't maple leaf!" And he'd been right, too, hadn't he? Tasso had heard the noise, and now mommy was going to go see. Brutus wanted to go see too, but maybe the monster would get him if he did! The puppy was blissfully unaware of the fact that he was essentially crying wolf, as the 'monster' was right beside him in the den. But outside, beyond the trees, and the bushes there was another danger. A danger that little Brutus could scarcely have understood to be a danger to begin with. "Can we play? Can we play can we play canweplay?" He bounced about in a circle, and then noticed something very interesting-- if he turned he could see something moving! Running around in a circle, Brutus chased his tail, which was, as always, just out of his reach.

Layla smiled at the pups, Simple Nox, energetic Brutus and then there was Tasso, She gave each pup a swift nuzzle, the contact something she'd never have though of had they been adults. "Stay in the den PLEASE Brutus" she chuckled, "And Tasso, i will have to see what i can get but i'll try" she grinned. Turning and leaving, for the moment not catching any signs of the male. She moved out swiftly and quietly, her ears and nose working to their fullest in the dark.

Ralastor waited, counting slow, steady breaths. In. Out. Three. Four. Fifty-three. Seventy-two. And then a few more until finally, finally he was sure he had them alone. All senses alert, he crept down to the den. The closer he got, the more the smell of puppyhood invaded his nostrils, reminding him of his own mother's den. Eagerness made him pick up the pace, until finally he was at the entrance.
"Who's there?" Tasso called, startled by the silhouette that suddenly loomed in the mouth of the den. "Mom?"
"No," Ralastor said, stepping inside at last. "I'm your father. I'm here to take you to your real family."
