Her past...
Alia grew up in a small farming community far from the epicenter of the kingdom. Her favourite companion and best friend was her cousin, Moira (alias, Mors), whose morbid curiosity and contrasting calm, typically sweet, nature earned her her nickname. The two of them did everything together. Ensis, as the only girl in a family of boys, was tomboyish, adventurous. Mors, as the only child of her father (mother deceased) had significantly less freedom.

Most of Alia's brothers started their own little farms, but the eldest went off adventuring and died when she was twelve. His name was Marik and he was her favourite. It was around that time Alia discovered her best friend's pain-- Moira's father, having lost his wife to his child, blamed her and treated her cruelly, making her (in some ways) take on her mother's role (in truth, acting more like a servant in the poor farm house).

When the pair turned 13 (their birthdays being exactly 18 days apart), she made Moira vow they would run away together. It was then they dubbed each other Ensis and Mors. It was between their 16th and 17th birthdays Ensis found her cousin sleeping in the dirt outside, bruised but not broken. She stole a young gelding from her father's farm, leaving some trinkets she'd received over the years as payment, and she and Mors escaped.

The two live by their knowledge of the land of farms; occassionally they pick-up short-term work as farm hands; sometimes, they even go on 'quests.'
