Deep within the Southlands, a dark and slender form slunk through grasses, towards the meager shade of a short tree. Giza'hawara, adolescent wild dog, was doing her very best to get out of the sun's heat after a short, solitary romp. Huge, rounded ears canted out sideways, and her pink tongue lolled from her open mouth.
Though she was indisputably a diurnal creature, Giza had been ill-made for days out in the hot sun, given the black of her pelt, which was broken only by patches of dark grey.
Reaching her goal at last, she flopped gracelessly down onto her side, continuing to pant.

Walking without really thinking about where she was going, Mapenzi plodded along in the heat. A single small rib bone hung from her mouth, occasionally wiggling into life as the lioness gave it an idle chew. Her lids were heavy, but her head felt light.
Stopping suddenly amidst the grasses, she looked up at the sun in protest.
"Why do you mock me?" she growled, the bone still in her mouth. She dropped her head heavily, panting slightly. It was then that her rusty brown eyes saw the shade/ And the other creature she would have to share with.

Giza was already just about to drift off to sleep, when her sharp hearing picked up on footfalls in the grass, and a growling voice. She gave a deep sigh, grumbling out in protest, "I ain't mocked nobody t'day."
"..'cept that coney maybe, but he don't count," she added idly, referring to her lapine lunch from earlier in the day.
Finally, with another sigh, the wild dog lifted her head to have a look at the complainer...who just happened to be a lion. Golden eyes widened for a moment, and she frowned mentally. Company of this sort might not be good. "Well damn," she muttered to herself, "Best watch yerself, girl."

Mapenzi couldn't help but chortle to the wild dog's quick wit and fast response.
"Nah, you don't look the type," she replied with a smirk, the bone in her mouth still muffling her speech. "Mind if I join ya?"
She padded forward, approaching thw dark furred wild dog, the bone lolling to one side and a little bit of drool dripping from the end of it. Even though the shade was only small, Mapa was gonna be thankful for it.

"'Long as ya don't go hoggin' the shade or gettin' any ideas, Cloudy, I don't see why not. I ain't gonna stop ya." Not that she could, really. Giza righted herself somewhat, so that she was laying more on her stomach than on her side. Still she panted, more drool adding to a dark patch in the dry dirt near her long legs.

Mapa snorted, and then flopped onto the dry ground, kicking up dust.
"My brain's too frizzled for thinkin' of any ideas," she laughed as she settled down.
As much as Mapa would've loved to have all the shade to herself, Giza looked like she needed it more. Besides, Mapa needed time to think of her next scam and this wild dog might actually prove inspiring.
"So, you got a name, Sooty?"

The adolescent got a noseful of the lion's dust and sneezed, then shook her head to rattle her brain back into place. That was how she thought of it, anyway. "An' mine's too full 'v dust now, I imagine."
"'s Giza, honey. Giza'hawara. How about you?"

"I could imagine you'd be deadly without dusty brains," Mapa sniggled. She rythmically dragged her tail across the ground, finding it to be a soothing motion. All she needed now was her own little fan-boy.
"My name's Mapenzi, but you can call me Mapa for shorts," she replied, looking up through the short tree at the dappled light filtering in through the leaves and branches.

"A right good imaginer ya are, m'dear." Giza grinned with a sort of wolfish humor, her own brush of a tail beating twice against the ground.
"Mapa it is, then," she said in conversational tone, "What brings ya t' a poor dog's shade tree, eh?"

"Yup, you should see me at meal times. I imagine I have a huge kill," she laughed, more at herself than anything in particular.
Mapenzi wasn't a bad huntress, just inexperienced and too accustomed to the idea that someone else could do it for her. She was a lonely cub, and was spoiled rotten by her parents.
Mapa continued to stare upwards.
"That," she said, referring to the sun. "Far too hot to keep pacing around and hoping that something is gonna leap into my mouth and let me eat it."

"Only in m' dreams!" Giza let loose a barking laugh, and her tail thumped again. "This dog don't got such fancies, 's small and harmless for me."
"Yeah, right inconsiderate of it, don't ya think?" She blinked her bright eyes up at the sky, chuckling. "Just hop right in, eh? That what that poor ol' bone did?"

"The bigger the meal, the longer it lasts. Only problem then is scavengers," Mapa commented, which was very ironic as she herself often thieved from other lions.
She rolled the bone around in her mouth, giving it another little chew and savouring what little taste it had left. She liked the sound of it grazing against her teeth more than anything.
"Yup, the sun is just there to punish those of us unfortunate enough to be dark-furred," she mused, actually sounding intelligent for a brief moment. Her eyes then fixed on her bone.
"Hehe, nah, it stayed there after the last thing that did hop into mah mouth had disappeared."

"An' th' bigger th' meal, th' bigger th' danger." Giza wrinkled her nose. "I'm a practical dog, miss. An' a problem one too," she added with a snicker.
"Sure seems it sometimes. Pity I ain't made for seein' at night, elsewise I'd do just fine I'm sure!"
"A lazy bone, then. But how'd ya talk its former owner into hoppin' in in th' first place?"

"Hehe, a bit conflicted then aren't ya?" Mapa said with an eyebrow raised and a smile on her muzzle.
She kept moving the bone around in her mouth, resulting in some pretty humorous faces. Eventually though, she dropped it into the dust and pouted. "Aww...had that goin' for days now..."
"I'm a smooth talker," she smiled. She wasn't about to reveal how she tricked another lion into giving up their kill.
