Sailor Vindemiatrix sat on the roof of his house, observing the moon. Apparently it was closer tonight than it had been for a while, and so it was brighter and larger.

The boy scrubbed his fingers through his hair and tilted his head to the side. He was not really quite sure he could tell. Maybe he had just not spent enough time staring at it lately.

This was supposed to be a patrol, but after his recent adventures in being a superhero, plus a rather vigorous work-out earlier that evening for ballet. His muscles ached in that way that indicated a really good workout; Vin stretched his legs out in front of him down the shingles, leaned back on his elbows, and enjoyed the feeling of not moving.

He sighed, tilting his head all the way back. Then a thought struck him.

Still a bit self-conscious about the whole shouting thing, especially since he was alone instead of on combat, and also on his own roof, the Senshi of Wine cast his Standard's Grip of the Grape. And, not having any real target for the attack in mind, instead swirled the conjured wine contemplatively in the glass, then raised it to his lips. Did it taste like anything, since it came out of nowhere?

For Kurma, it wasn't quite as much of a workout to go on patrol. Beyond that, it would be difficult to argue that what he did would actually count as a "patrol." Whenever he went out he mostly drifted (literally) around and above the fringes of the city, and watch as people and animals and vehicles moved around. He never went after negaversers or youma. Sometimes he stopped to chat with people. Other times he was too distracted to be stopped. And with the seasons in Destiny City transitioning from one to the next -- a phenomenon which he had never gotten to witness very often -- there were suddenly a lot more distractions to hold his attention.

Such was the case here, in which he wasn't initially seeking out any senshi at all. He had been following birds. In light of the warming weather, Destiny City's parks as well as its more urban areas had witnessed a blossoming of various fauna, and there was something particularly endearing to him about the hoppy, chirpy flying things that had started springing up everywhere. The fact that they could take to the skies was a definite plus, but his favorite thing about them had ended up being that he could get them to talk back if he whistled at them just right.

So, Sailor Vindemiatrix's unexpected visitor was marked by neither the noise of approaching footsteps, nor the sight of the glowing glass buoy the man always carried. Instead, there was a more human-sounding whistling intermingling with the occasional call of birds who apparently had things to complain about at this time of night, before he sauntered into view.

The wine was ... a little stronger than Vindemiatrix had been expecting, but quite delicious. He was not terribly well-versed in all of the lingo associated with the subtleties of flavor, but it tasted red, and was just sweet enough to appeal to him. The boy half-wondered if it would be the same wine every time he summoned it.

He elected not to finish the glass of it, though, since it did seem to be quite a bit more potent than any he had tried before; was that what magic tasted like? Sailor Vindemiatrix never felt any pressing need to get drunk out of his mind, anyway. This was nice, just having a bit of a drink and listening to the birds and watching the moon. Already, he could feel a few of the tight spots in his muscles relaxing--

When, rather suddenly, a floating man appeared.

Vindemiatrix got to his feet; the wine glass slipped from his fingertips and vanished, leaving a splash of wine behind on the shingles. Half a second later, he realized he had stood up too fast.

"Who are you?" he asked, trying to keep an eye on the stranger as he leaned forward slightly. He could not get a good view of him until the little fireworks of orthostatic hypotension faded from his vision, but then examining the man told the Senshi of Wine little. His little "spidey sense" was almost more helpful in this case - at least he was not a negaverse officer, but Vin was not confident he was a fellow senshi, either.

He could never quite get the birds to come close to him, or at least stay around and chat for a little while. No matter how harmless he tried to look or how carefully he approached, they always scattered and flew away once he touched over the invisible boundary they had for themselves. But tonight would be different. Kurma had a plan. This time he was equipped with a pack of sunflower seeds he'd picked up from the gas station.

There was a crinkling of plastic as he tore it open, emptying the contents into the palm of his hand -- which he then extended towards a tree branch a few of the birds had retreated to, quietly whistling at them all the while. It took a moment or two's worth of attempts before he was able to make any headway with them. Soon enough, though, one of them had tentatively hopped and fluttered its way over to his hand, perching on the tips of his fingers and digging its beak into the small pile of free food it had been offered.

By the time Vindemiatrix's voice had caught Kurma's attention, he was grinning as if his new animal companion had turned out to be carrying a winning lottery ticket.

"You know, I don't think I've ever had to answer that question as many times as I do nowadays," he mused, though seemingly mostly to the bird or himself. But then he turned around and drifted over to the rooftop, the tips of his boots scraping lightly against the shingles as he considered the senshi standing a ways away from him. "I've picked up a few names in my time, but I usually end up going by Kurma. It's easier that way. I won't mind if you come up with something better, though."

He flicked a couple of empty seed shells off of his palm so the bird would have an easier time snacking, and then turned his eyes back to the senshi again. "So, then. You're Sailor who, Senshi of what?"

Vin tilted his head slightly to one side as the stranger sprinkled sunflower seeds on his roof, then nodded slowly with one of those expressions on his face to clearly indicate that the nodding did not necessarily indicate understanding.

"Sailor Vindemiatrix, Senshi of Wine," he replied after taking a moment to process the question. Then the boy steadied himself on the sloping shingles, and bowed with a flourish. Because the sip of wine was telling him it was a good idea to go along with the introduction. "Nice to uh, meet you."

He looked up, squinting slightly at the birds that were still fluttering around in the area. "Just ... feeding the wildlife?" Then, lifting a brow, the boy took out the senshi cell phone he had received to go with his magic powers, and flipped it open, raising it to point towards Kurma. The name was helpful, but really did not offer much in the way of information as to who this guy really was.

Good news: the scan feature of the senshi phone successfully entered Kurma into Sailor Vindemiatrix's contact list. This meant, at least, that he was always a phone call away if whatever services provided were ever needed.

Bad news: having Kurma in his contact list did not reveal anything else about him, except perhaps that the man was passingly amused by the cheerful little boop! noise the phone made. He stopped grinning like a kid in a candy store at the bird perched on his fingers for just long enough to grin in a similar fashion at the device in the senshi's hands.

"Yup," he answered lackadaisically, using his free hand to crack a seed open so he could see if he could get the bird to take a treat straight from his fingers. The operation a success, he drifted a little ways closer to Vin and offered him a second packet of sunflower seeds to see if he wanted to give it a try. "Wine, huh? Sounds like fun."

Vin focused his eyes on the LED screen and quirked a brow, as though looking at it longer would reveal further facts. But after it failed to produce anything helpful, he looked back up at the strange man.

"Oh, yeah, I guess," he replied to the question with a small shrug. Accepting the packet of seeds, Vindemiatrix tucked his phone away for the moment, and fumbled the packet open with some difficulty.

The birds seemed a bit less willing to take seeds from him, instead peering at the boy from where they perched on and around Kurma. Giving up after a few moments, Vin cracked open a seed between his teeth and ate it himself, tossing the shell onto the roof. Under usual circumstances, he would not be too forward with his questions, but the wine had left him decidedly uninhibited.

"You're not a senshi, and you're not trying to kill me or something yet, so like, who are you exactly?" he asked directly, attempting with another seed to lure a bird over. And while he was being direct, "And how are you flying like that?"
PostPosted: Mon Apr 18, 2011 8:28 pm

Kurma's attentioned turned to Vin as he fumbled with the seed packet. Really, the man could sympathize: those things were such a pain to open. He spent a moment wondering why people on this planet made such a habit out of putting food in such obnoxious packaging. Wasn't eating supposed to be simple and enjoyable? What, then, was the deal with all of the elaborations and overcomplications? It had taken Cosmos a painstaking bit of effort to explain the importance of silverware and napkins before--

Oh. He'd been asked a question.

"I just told you my name," he answered, his brow furrowing a bit. "Or -- wait, lemme guess, you're asking the other who question, right?" The orb at his side was brought up by the thin rope it was dangling from, and Kurma gazed into its surface for a little while, as if looking for the answer within the soft starlight-like glow. As he pondered, his hand went to his side and the little pile of seeds fell with it. The birds were quick to approach Vin as their new source of easy snacking.

His eyes stayed steady on his netted orb, his other hand coming up to grasp it as well. "My life isn't tied up with that of planets," he started. "Yours is. So it's not a question of how I can fly, but how you can walk. I can settle down if it would make talking to me easier, though."

Vindemiatrix's head bobbed a little as Kurma figured out what he was asking, then tilted his head slightly to one side. Was it just the wine he had tasted, or was this guy seriously weird? The boy did not immediately notice the birds moving over to beg him for seeds as he processed the information.

"Well, yeah, of course I'm tied up with Earth. I was born here, obviously," he replied after a long moment; a bit of cognitive effort was evident on his features. Vin was open to the idea of aliens, especially after all that had been going on in Destiny City, but Kurma looked human enough. "I walk 'cause there's gravity here and humans ... evolved legs."

He then seemed to notice the birds, and held out a few seeds on the palm of his hand. Then, returning his attention to Kurma, Vin asked, "So is flying something I get to do later with my superhero powers?" A pause. "Also, what planet are you from, then?"

The glass of wine was either the best possible thing for this sort of conversation, or the worst possible thing. Or potentially both.

Kurma looked puzzled. It may have said something about him that his expression was currently closely mirroring that of someone who was slightly tipsy. He crossed his arms in front of him, and in spite of his offer earlier, sat himself in midair.

"I'm not from any planet at all, kiddo," he answered. "I don't belong to any specific place. And..." Then he paused, and pondered for a moment, a hand running through the loose bits of hair hanging over the side of his face. "Don't think I've ever seen a senshi fly, actually. But as I said, you got a place, just like every senshi does. Speaking of which, when's the last time you checked yours out?"

Vindemiatrix knew he was tipsy, but he did not know what he looked like when he was tipsy. He just thought Kurma's face looked a little funny, and a small smile tugged at the corner of the boy's mouth.

"Well, yeah, of course I've got my own place," he replied, still fighting back a grin. "I'm not homeless. Home all the time I'm not at school or going to lessons or doing this senshi thing." He at least had the presence of mind not to say that he was sitting on his own roof. Or maybe Vin just did not think of bringing it up. "Was there earlier tonight." Duh.

A pause.

"Sucks I won't get to fly, though, I guess. But the jumping is almost the same."
PostPosted: Fri May 13, 2011 6:54 pm

"Don't worry about the flying bit too much, it's not all it's cracked up to be," answered Kurma. And then, as if on cue, he touched down on the roof -- tapping the toes of his boots against the shingles experimentally, then settling down on it all the way in a lopsided lotus position. "Then again, I just don't get a good chance to walk around very often."

He shrugged. Who knew.

"Anyway," he continued, swiveling his head around to face the senshi a bit more directly, "you're a lucky kid, you know, to have all those places. This planet, your house... on top of those two, you got one you haven't been to since the last time you woke up, I take it. Vindemiatrix is your place too." He flashed a small grin. "How else do you think you got that name?"

Vindemiatrix put on a more serious face and he nodded, taking Kurma's thoughts on flying to heart. This guy looked like he knew everything about flying, so he should know best.

He stepped closer to the man, tilting his head to one side slightly. "Wait, haven't been there since the last time I woke up?" the Senshi of Wine repeated, rubbing one eye with a finger. He took a long moment to consider Kurma's next question, then shook his head. "Got the name 'cause a talking cat told me that was my name? And what do you mean Vindemiatrix is a place, too? It's a star out in Virgo, I know." Vin had used the internet, duh. Gears turned in his mind for another minute. "Wait, you mean the star is like ... mine?" He was not quite sure what that meant yet; hopefully Kurma would explain.
PostPosted: Wed Jun 01, 2011 3:35 pm

"Yes, it's a star beyond this system... or at least it is last I checked," mused Kurma, tossing his ball in his hands a couple of times. "You'd know better than I would. And... yes, it is your star. The star Vindemiatrix shares a close bond with you, and that is what allows you to be a senshi."

The man leaned backward, folding his hands behind his head and ultimately ended up lying down on the rooftop next to the senshi, his half-lidded gaze pointed at the night sky above them. "It's also your old home... before you lived here on Earth, you lived there. You should try stopping by there again sometime."

Vin blinked. He squinted. Then he grinned and laughed. "What?" he blurted. "That's what happened then? That's why I have..." unable to find the right words, the boy gestured to the costume he wore. "This?"

The series of expressions that followed on the Senshi of Wine's face ultimately settled on cautious acceptance. Perhaps it was a good thing that he was in an altered state of consciousness while he was taking all of this in, although it had seemed rather like an altered state of consciousness in general since he had first been given magic powers by a cat. So why not space travel to a star that belonged to him, too.

"How do I get to my star? It's really far away, isn't it?" He shifted his weight to one foot and crossed his arms. With a scuffing sound, one foot slid on the grit on the roof, and he caught his balance, then rested his gloved hands on the opposite elbows again, features not slipping when he did. "Do I have to trade you a glass of wine to tell me?"
