Mary-Annabella, the new girl on the block, was done with class. Heck, class was over. And that final class of the day had been biology of some sort. The teacher had wandered away, something about getting a cup of coffee and maybe catching up on the local game, for some reason or another leaving her there to clean up. After all, she was new. New had to pay dues or something like that.

And Mary-Annabella didn't mind at all. In fact, she was getting ready to roll up her sleeves and get that bottle of bleach and bleaching the place up. But there was no real way to do that without breaking into the cleaning supplies... the teacher and janitor had the keys. She sat there at the teacher's desk, feet propped up on the wooden surface, tossing wads of paper ( used and unwanted, these were hers if you must know) into the waste bin. " And she shoots~....And misses! Ten points deducted....Trying for another shot....Its in~ Twenty points!! Yaaaay~ "

Mai walked down the halls of the school, a slight jingle to her step as she twirled the keys. The teacher had told her to help the new girl out. It wasn't something she really wanted to do, but what else was there? It would be just as boring at home, so might as well see what was up with the new girl.

She opened the classroom door slowly, scanning the room for the student mentioned. She wondered why the teacher didn't just go back himself but teachers did what they wanted to do. Mai spotted the girl over at the teacher's desk, sitting quite comfortably and shooting trash into a waste bin. "Having fun there?" She smiled, walking into the room nonchalantly jingling the keys. "I believe you need these." She sat them on the desk, smiling at the girl.

The jingling of keys was heard. It was hard to miss, really. You heard one set of keys, you heard them all. But it meant being bored was over. Happy squee.... Ten points...aw... Minus ten.

Mary-Annabella glanced over, throwing a piece of trash into the bin, and tilted her head to the side as this new girl entered. Well, not new. New for her anyways. The rhetorical question went unanswered at least verbally. She glanced around and gave this person the ' what do you think?' look. Mary-Annabella was bored. She was at least keeping herself entertained. And she lost at her own game...shown by rather a fine amount of paper outside the bin. "Oh! Yay! So he didn't forget about me! "

She spun about on the chair to stand up, snatched the keys then vaulted over the desk to get started bleaching the place. Every lab deserves a good bleaching! Though, she did pause just after her jump, holding her hand out to this girl who so kindly helped her on the quest to get the keys. "Thanks! I'm Mary-Annabella. Does he always delegate to students what should be his job? "

"Looks like you're making more work for yourself." Her eyebrows quirked curiously as the girl began to clean. Mai took the girl's hand with a half-hearted shake. "It's nice to meet you. I'm Eyota, but you can call me Mai." She covered her nose slightly, eyes beginning to water. "Let's get some windows open. I don't want to suffocate on the fumes put off by that stuff."

She stuck her head out the window, gasping for the fresh, bleach fume free air that poured in. "Now..." She looked back at the girl, a small frown settled on her lips. "The teacher left you to do this alone?" That wasn't something the teacher would do... Unless she was supposed to be the one to help. She sighed, rubbing a hand to her temples, "Would you like some help? It'll be that much faster."

" Not really. I have it on a poster board so all I need to do it lift the can off, and pour the paper into the bin. " And the last ball of paper was tossed into the bin before Mar-Bella showed this Mai exactly what she meant. She shook the girl's hand as well.... And nodded at the exchange of names. " I'm Mary-Annabella. G'luck figuring out how to shorten it. " What was rather amusing was, at least to Mara'Bella, that the bleach was opened, but she hadn't even began to dilute the chemical in water yet and already windows were opening!

Better safe than sorry. She laughed softly and shrugged, accepting this. " I wasn't going to use it pure, silly. Everyone knows to dilute bleach in a good deal of water first. My, you've got a sensitive nose. Awesome~ And I mean that! That's pretty wicked."

To answer the question about why the teacher would just leave her to clean it by herself, Mara'bella laughed. "Well, apparently I got a little smart in the mouth and pointed out that the gas lines weren't hooked up properly. Not to mention, something about improper dress code, but these are really the only shirts I have. I asked for new ones that'd comply with the dress code but NOOOO... Mother unit said I looked fine. " She was saying this while dividing water and practically a capfull of bleach in the buckets marked ' Bleach water'. Rags were thrown into the warm water... and as an after thought those rubber gloves were grabbed and tossed towards Mai. " If your offering, I wouldn't mind the help. I have to help the janitor with repairs later today. Faster I get this done, faster I get to help her, and faster I get to go home to do homework. "

Mai thought for a moment. Her strength wasn't in remembering names, let alone thinking of a good nickname. Mary? Mary-Anne? Bella? Annabella? Well, it would be whatever the girl preferred. She drifted out of her thoughts, looking at the girl. "My grandpa always did say I had a nose like a fox." Though her grandpa did say coyote. She always thought he had the saying wrong. She pointed to her nose before picking up the gloves, eyes still watering. "The good thing is, I can smell a good batch of good cookies from a mile away!" She smiled at Mary-Annabella, taking a rage in hand, grateful that the new solution bothered her less.

She moved things off the lab table before carefully wiping it down. "Did everyone catch you and make you work? Even I didn't do so much on my first day." She concentrated on her work, "Unless, you like to help out." And homework, how fun...

'Now that's a nifty skill! Wish I could do that... Though I'd probably be the one on my back fixing the oven... " She said off-handedly, eying the cabinets, daring something to go wrong. "Mmm... cookies sound good too... " Momentarily distracted by the thought of fixing up an oven, Mara'bella blinked as she recalled something about cookies and coyotes. "Coyote huh? Isn't there a story about a coyote and blankets? "

With a small shrug, and a laugh, the tinkering girl grinned , "I have no idea. The janitor caught me toying with that water fountain just outside of the gym class that wouldn't work right... I got lucky and got a couple months worth of working it off instead of detention. " She set to clean the questionably clean glass beakers by soaking them in the hot bleach water for a bit. The test tubes were the first to go in. "So you can say yes. Everyone and almost their dog caught me and is demanding I work. No doubt you'll see me tomorrow changing lightbulbs in the gymnasium or rewiring that scoreboard. I swear... "

She giggled as she gathered more glassware to sterilize. If she's going to be forced to clean the place, it was going to be done properly, like her dad had taught her. IT. WOULD. BE. CLEAN! "Mara'bell. You can call me that. Its not a half bad nick name too! My Da always calls me that when he's home from the labs. "

"I think my grandpa used to tell me a story like that..." She trailed off for a moment, lost in thought. "But it was so long ago, I forgot." Mai would listen intently to her grandfather's wise words. He always told her what was write and wrong, how to live life the best she could, and to be generous. And he lead by example. She sighed as she reminisced.

Mai's hands rinsed the rag gently, allowing the warm bleach water to soak in without harming the beakers. She didn't want to have to pay for anything broken. "I don't think the janitor should punish you for trying to fix something by fixing other things." She laughed and added, "He's probably just too lazy to do it himself!"

With the first lab table looking s**c and span, she moved on to the next, caught off guard by a rapid succession of sneezes. Mai sneezed into her elbow, teary eyed once again. "It seems like you enjoy tinkering." She huffed out after her fit. "It seems like a very interesting hobby. Must be nice to be able to work with your hands, Mara'bell." She would have to make sure to remember that nickname.

Mara'bella gave Mai a beaming smile and a shrug of the shoulders. She could remember being told a story like that as well, but details escaped her. "But, hey! At least you were told the story. That's always a good start. Maybe scour the library in the children's section to find it? " she offered.

Already she was onto wiping down the cupboard doors. Handles would come last since she had to put the glasses away after their soak. And it would take a lot to break a beaker. Glass was fickle though... "They shouldn't, but he knows my father and already ran it by him and the school person thingy... At least I'm getting paid for it. " How much? She wasn't sure. And honestly, she didn't really care. As long as she got to just zone out and fix something, all would be good. And that also meant getting out of detention to fix something! YAAY! " To be honest, he doesn't know jack other than sweeping and mopping. "

The sneezes caught her attention. Mary-Annabella looked with mild concern at Mai and started rummaging through the cabinets, pulling out one of those face masks and a new tissue box, and held both of those out to her. "Bleach getting to you? Sorry... You don't have to stay and help you know? " With another shrug, she answered the question, " Yeah. I guess? I'm good at it. That and card games. "

"So... what do folks do around here for fun? " she asked, getting back to wiping the cabinets down.

"Hmm..." The girl thought for a moment, thinking back to the story. "It would be interesting to find that book. Maybe we could go on a research mission." She replied with a smile to Mara'bella's offer. She took a little break to re-soak her rag.

Mai gratefully took the mask handed too her feeling a little pathetic in the process. She put it on with the bands snapping the back of her head. It was a little weird and constricting, but it was better than sneezing every few minutes. She continued with the next table, glad to be almost done. "I'm already in for the long haul, I can't back out now." She nodded to the girl as she cleaned. "It's great that you're getting paid!" Mai was a bit envious at this. She didn't have a job and surely couldn't fix things half as well as her new friend could. "The only thing I do after school, besides help new students clean, is helping to take care of one of the teacher's little "projects." She added the little air quotes to her explanation.

"As for what people do around here for fun," She paused, thinking "There's always the movies, the arcade, a bunch of normal teenager things. You could roam around until you find something you're interested in too." She nodded, moving to her last table.

" Oooh~ that sounds like a blast. " she commented while returning to the sink to rinse off the excess bleach off the glassware and hang them up to dry on the appropriate racks. "The library's pretty big here, isn't it? " She wasn't really a reading type, but adventures were always fun.

Mara'Bella gave the poor masked Mai a sympathetic smile. The masks weren't comfortable, but they did a good job of filtering out stuff that was floating in the air. "I appreciate the help. " The comment about getting paid was met with a humble shrug from the new girl. The money was nice, yes, but it wasn't really needed at this point in her life. She smiled and laughed, really enjoying the story being told about the teachers and poor Mai's lot in life here. "Projects? Really? Ha ha ha! My, you're a right old busy bee. They must be really lazy then. "

So there were normal things to do around here. That was good to know. She was afraid that there were some hip things to do in a city that were different from the suburbia lifestyle she was used to. " Nice. Sounds rather interesting, anyways. Mind throwing the stools on the table? Makes it easier for the janitor to clean the floors. " The cabinets were being wiped down. Yep... Almost done.

"Say~ Are you doing anything after this? Well, in an hour I mean. " Mara'bella asked the great helper and her possible new friend at the school. "Want to catch a movie or hit the Zoo? If you have time that is. "

Mai laughed along with the girl. “Believe me, I have plenty of other things to do then run around for the teacher.” She stretched her arms to the ceiling, grateful they were almost done. She placed the rag in the bleached water once more, eyes starting to well up. “Should we do the floor next?” She glanced down at the floor beneath her. It wasn’t too bad, but It’s not as if she welcomed the idea of dragging the broom and mop around. That just meant more bleach.

“After this I’m-“ She sneezed rather loudly, cutting off her sentence. With a free hand she rubbed the mask, thinking about chores she might have at home. “I’m free.” She nodded proudly, “I haven’t been to the zoo in ages! Maybe we should go there?” She smiled sweetly, “If that is your offer.” She leaned over the now clean table, watching the girl with a lazy expression.

For the sake of getting to the Zoo, Marabella just grinned at the silly question while draining the sink, rinsing out the rags, and running the cold water for a bit to prevent the bleach from doing who knows what to the steel sink. You never know. Someone might have poured something down there to cause a nasty reaction. This was High School. not a University.

At the suggestion that they clean the floors, she paused and shook her head, 'Naw. That's what the staff is for. They'll get it. Hell, they'll probably contaminate this entire place doing it...Bah... "

Catching the irritation in the other from all the chemicals, Marabella gave her a sympathetic smile and popped open another window for airflow. " Alright. That sounds awesome. lets go. . . !!! " Marabella, a bundle of energy right now, danced over, looped her arm with Mai and...headed for teh Zoo...which she had no direcction where it was. She probably went the wrong way once they were out of teh school, but hey! They would get there one way or another.

Mai was grateful to be heading out of that classroom. If being in school longer than she had to be wasn't enough, she had to clean along with it. Those chemicals never really sat well with her. She pulled the mask off once they were outside and took a deep breath to clear her lungs and senses. Now it was time for the Zoo.

But were they going the wrong way? From what Mai had remembered when she last visited, it was in the opposite direction. She craned her neck, looking behind her as if she could see the Zoo's sign or directions out of the blue to lead them to it. "Um, Mara'bella?" She stopped in her tracks. "Do you know where we're going?" She smiled, pointing a slender finger behind her. "I think it's that way."
