Officially is called the "Earth hour"
And as I think you already know, It is organized by many conservation organizations and supposed to be the largest campaign that takes place every year in order to generate a deep thought about our planet, the damage we do with global warming.
In addition to saving energy and notice the small change that occurs when we turn off the lights.

So, I do invite everyone, to do so and help our planet to be a better place for everyone smile

When? March 26th from 8.30 to 9.30 PM local time

How many Are going to go? 1.3 thousand, Officially baby!

i'm of two minds about earth hour. i really want to like it and support it but it honestly feels very heavily of "lolol lets all put in our tiny bit of effort and we'll feel justified in all the rest of the damage we do" that alot of mainstream suburbanites do. i feel it teeters too close to buying those ridiculous pink ribbons that dont do jack. it's good that it raises awareness and gets people to use less, but is that one hour really going to do that much? especially if most people dont do it to begin with, and of the people that do actually participate, how many of them do anything else during the year to reduce their consumption of goods or re-use things that still have life in them?

I feel the same as you Strega Mama. It's nice to draw awareness, but how many participants actually turn things off with more regularity as a result of the annual Earth Hour? It's much more beneficial to make a commitment to unplug/power down every single day when you're not using things rather than stop using everything for a single hour once a year.

I understand your points of view and wondered the same thing when I done it by the first time...Was really disappointing that only two houses actually turn off the light in my block, but lets remember that is a voluntary event ( Though, personally, I think that should be a legal thing in the future). but at the same time, is chain effect...

If people decides to continue the good preservation and money saving methods is up to them. But someone has to begin with the example.

I'll do it! It's nice here so we can play outside for an hour. We're usually outside at that time anyway, so the lights are off.

Strega Mama
i'm of two minds about earth hour. i really want to like it and support it but it honestly feels very heavily of "lolol lets all put in our tiny bit of effort and we'll feel justified in all the rest of the damage we do" that alot of mainstream suburbanites do.

For Earth Day a few years back:

I worked for a smaller company that was bought by a bigger company. A company that had meetings for meetings and Feel Good™ Committees. (One such itty bitty committee was the Green Committee which they talked about "GHG's" for an hour.) So, for Earth Day, they made everyone write on this shared Excel sheet what they were going to do for Earth Day. Oh boy, what bull there was. A lot who lived within walking distance of their office were going to give up driving and one woman wrote "I'm going to use Tupperware instead of plastic baggies". I refused to write what something in and got called into the office for not being a Team Player™ *. dramallama

(* This was instigated by me opening the document and shockingly, and loudly, reading "what the Hell? YOU SHOULD USE TUPPERWARE ALL THE TIME. ARRFGHJKHGJKGHFKJG *meltdown.*)

If it wasn't for this thread, I would of totally forgotten myself. Like Remembrance Day (Veterans Day for the Americans) - every hour is Earth Hour.

At this house: business as usual. My mother in law watched TV, turned on the dishwasher and had lights on. She even told me that it's Earth Hour. I think some people are like, in the house and say "oh, it's raining out" and go about their business because it doesn't affect them at all. It drives me mad. Mad.

I really think people should be shamed into doing it. Really. Shame on you for not reducing your power consumption for a measly hour.

Lol: Earth Hour Barely Noticed:
The Toronto Star had some fun checking out who had the lights on and there were some real surprises. The President of Earth Day Canada left his lights blazing, as did the Provincial Minister of Energy, former Mayor David Miller and the headquarters of Ontario Power Generation, on a Saturday night yet.
