It had been only a few days since the day that had changed her life - she was quite certain that she would remember it forever, that day, and the pain...

Good lord, the pain she'd felt that night.

She'd been given a crash course, in one rare moment that she had gotten her captain to stay still from his search, as well as enough rest to be coherent. Energy, starseeds, the whole works.

This was her first night on her own. Scheelite was combing the town for the missing agents, only a crystal call away should she need him - but the fact remained that she was alone, on her own, and it was the first time.

Energy gathering in itself wasn't difficult, per-se. But as with many things, the devils was in the details. Choosing the right target, the right location. She'd lured off a drunk in a nearby alley, which had been easy enough - now she had him pinned, and her face was pulled into a frown of concentration as a small orb was forming into her hand.

Like that... Steady... Steady....

"You're leaving your back completely open," said a voice in disgust.

Standing only a few feet behind Fluorite was a large tomcat. He'd seen better days, was no doubt the first opinion others had of him. One ear torn, one eye missing - those was the obvious things. But people who knew how to look would also notice that his coat was glossy and well groomed, and he had the sleekness of a well fed yet well exercised cat. He also possessed an orange coat with black stripes - the markings of a tiger, an expensive breed of housecat. Not the stray his scars made him seem.

There was also, of course, the fact that he was talking which made it obvious he wasn't your run-of-the-mill kitty.

"You must be prety new to this, huh," he said. It wasn't a question. Though if it turned out he was wrong, he would be less than impressed. "What if I were a senshi? You crouching there with your back to the alley entrance. Open target! Sheesh."

Masahiro rolled his one eye. In a graceful arc, he leapt from the ground to the lid of a nearby trashcan. It afforded him a better view of the victim and Fluorite's actions.

"Well, carry on," he said, waving one paw. Might as well see what else she was doing wrong.

She almost dropped the orb when Masahiro first spoke, and bit back her own startled cuss. s**t.

Wait... what was that ? Soon enough he jumped in her field of vision. A cat.... ? No, none of those cats that she'd been warned about. He had something familiar about him which had nothing to do with true recognition.

It was hard to explain, but Fluorite felt that he was safe.

She finished her orb before looking up, tucking the fragile thing into her sash before propping the man on her shoulder. Hide the body, she'd been told, to not draw attention to herself. Cover your tracks. He'll wake up soon enough...

"Well, now that we've stated the obvious, shall we move on to introductions ?" Her voice was kept low as to not draw attention. No s**t she was new, and hopefully kittykat had more to offer than vitriol about it.

She had to admit he had a point, which... only made it worse. "So I should face the opening ?" She stabilised the unconcious man as she moved deeper inside the alley. "Back to the wall ?"

Yep, new.
PostPosted: Tue Mar 22, 2011 6:00 pm

"Y'know, if you want introductions, you could introduce yourself first," Masahiro pointed out, one ear flattening. Rude, but he supposed she had just been startled after all. At least she'd managed to keep hold of the energy she'd leeched. For that, he let her have his name. "Masahiro. Hiro, if that's easier for you."

It beat what could happen if it didn't give out his name. Mister Kitty, Fluffy, Stripey, Tigger... There was no end to the amount of horrible 'cat' names he could be given if he didn't provide his own first. And then the Generals and above got upset if he scratched up their Lieutenants for the insult. Hmph.

He wondered just what the new recruits were being taught these days if they didn't even know to keep their backs to walls when distracted with energy gathering. "Yes," he agreed, expression no doubt revealing his thoughts. "Unlike battle or starseed retrieval, gathering energy takes time and a lot of focus," at least at this base level. "You don't want to be attacked while all your attention is on the victim, right?"

He paused. A pointed stare said she'd better not disgree on that.

"So you want to be facing the most likely direction of an attack - in this case, where the alley meets the street. If someone does arrive, you'll see movement from the corner of your eye and you've got a better chance of acting before you get hit."

His head titled to one side. "Though some senshi do tend to announce themselves first... but I wouldn't risk my life on it if I were you."

As it was, she was half-tempted to resort to pretty nicknames - but that certainly wouldn't be starting on the right foot, and the fact that he actually answered her managed to ease down her defencives tendencies. Lightly.

"Fluorite." She offered her own name in return. She'd yet to meet enough agents to earn creative nicknames, though she figured it was only a matter of time before someone thought calling her Midget or anything of the sort was the most creative thing known to mankind.

Maybe they should have given her platform shoes...

As it was, Fluorite was padding deeper in the alley carefully, avoiding broken glass - she didn't want to check if her foot wraps would block that - she had a feeling that it wouldn't do much good, and her feet got sore enough after an evening of energy-stealing as is.

She let the man down on the ground as silently and carefully as she could - for all that this lieutenant lacked in... well, common sense, she seemed to make up with stealth, at least.

"Right." Thankfully for her, she agreed with Hiro on that point - a chance at reaction would be at her advantage. She continued to listen to him as green eyes scanned the area. There were beer bottles, which... well, if someone found him it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to think he passed out from the alchool. A few trash bags later and the man was as hidden from street view as could be - though she had sent careful glances over her shoulder all the while, even with Hiro's presence.

At least she'd learned something ?

"Definitively not... I'd rather see them coming." Not that she knew much about senshi. Fluorite wasn't especially strong, but she was quick and agile. She just had no idea how to apply these qualities to a battle setting. "Im sorry, I won't do that again. Thank you, Hiro."

Hiro noted down Fluorite's name as he continued to inspect her. Under his watchful gaze, she moved the body, arranging things so that the scene appeared natural. Even the man himself might assume he'd only been drunk when he awoke surrounded by empty bottles. A very nice method of covering her tracks, indeed.

He preened as Fluorite thanked him - literally, licking a paw and smoothing it over his scarred eye. "You're welcome," he said. Appreciative humans were always preferred. Even if they couldn't quite measure up to corrupt senshi, in Hiro's books, manners and good sense could raise a corrupt human's value to being fairly close.

"It's not your fault," he added. "Shouldn't you have a Captain teaching you the ropes? A soldier's mistakes reflect only poor training or leadership."

A proper feudal lord would never send untrained troops out into the field. Hiro couldn't approve of whoever had let Fluorite out on her so quickly. The girl was going to get herself hurt because someone else had been slacking off. That didn't reflect well on the Negaverse, and therefore on Hiro, a member of the Negaverse.

Fluorite honestly did believe that even if she had a captain - even if she had a teacher - she could still learn from everyone else within the negaverse. If she only learned one thing from each individual she met, then she could put it all together and find where she meant to stand, what she was meant to do. The thing that would make her, well... her.

Because right now, the girl had no real idea.

"I was shown the ropes." Schee had probably told her the back thing. She'd zoned out once or twice. "I've just... never really did anything like this before." It wasn't an excuse, it was a fact.

She doubled hair-pulling counted as battle experience.

For now, though... She paused, pulling the orbs out of her sash to examine them. There were a few there already - the man wasn't her first victim of the night. "I should probably turn these in soon... They have an... aura of their own, don't they ? So im more likely to be found the more of them I have ?" The whole aura thing was complicated, but she thought she could feel it, faintly, muddled feelings nearly overtaken by her own energy, as well as Hiro's.
PostPosted: Wed Mar 23, 2011 5:57 pm

One ear flattened as Fluorite admitted this was her first time gathering energy. "S'a bad system," the cat said flatly, addressing no one in particular. "Alone for your first energy retrieval. Someone should've demonstrated or watched your back."

Was the Destiny City branch of the Negaverse trying to lose new recruits? With the information he'd overheard about the recent kidnapping of officers by a particular senshi group, Hiro would have thought the place would be on high alert.

Fluorite did have good results to show for her solo adventure, however. Hiro's eye widened as he took in the small group of orbs already gathered.

"Maa, you're doing pretty well on your own, aren't you?" he said. It might be worth sticking with this one for the night, see her in action. She could be promising (and Hiro could get some more information on the process of gathering energy - it wasn't something corrupted senshi tended to do, after all).

The energy level or aura of a cat was tiny compared to even a Lieutenant. One of the few advantages of feline form was a natural aura suppressant, allowing the cats to be mistaken for ordinary for by both sides, if they didn't spy the stars on their foreheads. The downside was that those cats who could take human form were blazing beacons when they shifted to it.

"It does seem to be amplifying your own energy level." Hiro tilted his head to one side, considering. His readings might be off considering she'd already had so much gathered by the time he arrived. "Nothing too serious, not like a General or a corrupted senshi, but more noticable, yes."

He wondered if Fluorite had to return to the Negaverse to personally turn over the energy, or if she could simply send it there from where she was. Hiro sat at attention, watching closely.

"Ah.. ?" Fluorite frowned, a look of confusion sliding onto her features, until she realized her wording. "Oh, no, this isn't my first time energy-gathering. Just my first time doing it alone." The purple-haired girl looked a little sheepish. "Sorry, I guess im just... nervous. I forget words sometimes."

She was nervous. Beside Laurelite, this was her first time meeting an agent that wasn't her captain. Scheelite had high faith in her, and well... Fluorite's faith in herself wasn't that high. Yet. She wanted to make a good impression on the rest of the organization, no matter who they were. She hadn't exactly started really well with Hiro to begin with, she felt.

Hiro seemed impressed with her loot, though, and it did give her some confidence. "Once you get the hang of it, it's not so hard..." Oh, hell no, she wasn't talking about her first few attempts. Disaster was the right word in that case. "The hardest part is really... luring them somewhere where no one will see you, and keeping your focus once you get started." At least the hardest part for her.

"Hm..." The girl, for her part, pondered for a moment. "I should probably get one more, just to be safe. Then i'd be pretty good on my quota already."

Looked like Hiro would get to see the lieutenant in action after all.
PostPosted: Wed Mar 23, 2011 7:16 pm

Hiro was mildly relieved. At least they weren't throwing the recruits straight into the deep end and waiting to see who drowned and who used someone else's corpses for a raft. The look he gave Fluorite was tolerant and amused. First time nerves, how cute. If he wasn't so much smaller than Fluorite he would have given her a pat on the head. (As it was, he was the one danger of headpats.)

"Well, if you've got your traps and luring downpat, that's half your job done." The other half, as mentioned before, was anticipating and protecting against enemy strikes while draining the target.

Both ears pricked up as Fluorite mentioned getting just one more orb before calling it a night. Hiro leapt off his trashcan, landing by the Lieutenant. With a flick of his tail, he said, "I'll tag along. Let you know if I see any openings in your technique."

It wasn't a question. Like any cat, it would be an impossible task to tell Hiro where to go, or not go. The feline mind of course thought that anyone and everyone should be delighted and honoured to have his company. So this kitty was going with Fluorite, and that was that.

It was really too bad that Hiro couldn't take human form at all, because Fluorite was definitively proper head patting height.

It was only time before the pocket-sized agent jokes started flying, she knew of it.

At least, Fluorite didn't seem to mind her feline tag-along, or if she did, nothing showed of it. Rather, the girl started scaling the side of the building, using dumpsters and window ledges. It was slow and careful, definitively marks of someone who hadn't done this for very long, but also showcasting that she was very used to moving and being active, in contrast with most of her generation.

She figured the cat wouldn't have much trouble following her.

Fluorite scaled the side of the building like a cat burglar. Hiro approved. After a few moments of watching her movements, he decided the only things he could critique there were things that would improve with time. If the girl asked, he'd just suggest she practice the climbing more often. Maybe timed drills or something...

Realising that Fluorite was almost at the top, Hiro broke off his musing and followed. He used the same path she had, several of the leaps easier for a cat, some of them harder since he couldn't reach so high and then pull himself up. Still, he made it up in good time.

The night air ruffled his fur as he sat on the edge of the roof. One teal eye turned to Fluorite. "Where to?" he asked.

Fluorite had stopped on top of the roof, stretching her arms a little while pondering her next move. Proper warm-ups before and after effort where important, soccer had at least told her that much. She'd suffered her fair share of cramps and sprains in the younger years.

The short lieutenant had quickly decided she didn't want to figure out what it was to have a cramp when you where a few stories up.

"We gotta go elsewhere." Fluorite started to explain, but then frowned a bit. Why was she explaining ? Masahiro probably had a good idea of her logic. Really, a talking cat was so... so.... odd. Not as odd as invading aliens and large monsters (youma, she mentally corrected herself).

Though did that meant Hiro was a cat from space ?

Strange. Very strange. Oh well.

"I mean... a pile of people all passed out in the same place is suspicious, right ?" It didn't take months of training to figure out at least that much, and she started to head toward the other side. There was another bar not too far away from here...

Through there was something the girl had clearly overestimated - she'd climbed up, no problem, she'd seen that in a movie once !

But what came up had to go down. They were very, very high up.

Oh, god damn...

She sat against the ledge. Don't look down. She repeated to herself as a mantra. She turned and pushed herself off, hanging only by her hands. Don't look down. There was a lower building right here, just a small drop.

But they were still way too up for her tastes.

Oh for the love of god don't look down....

Fluorite let go just as she kicked the side of the roof - her landing was a little shaky, but she went where she wanted.

Dear god why had she decided to go through the roofs ?!

Oh.

Right.

Trying to impress the cat.

"There's another bar down this street." She pointed out. "Just continue down these buildings..." A nice, easy line, with only small gaps even a non-powered person could manage. "Then we can drop in the alley in between the bar and the store, and wait."
PostPosted: Mon Mar 28, 2011 8:34 pm

Hiro let his eyes drift to half-mast and gave an approving rumble as Fluorite explained their move in location. For all that his first impression had been a girl without much of a clue, it seemed that Fluorite really did have her head together. Hiro could help her out with a few pointers, like not leaving her back unguarded, but he was quite pleased to discover the young woman was no stranger to logic and consequences.

Not to mention, a knack for picking locations and victims where her energy draining activities would cause the least amount of concern. No one would think twice to see a figure passed out behind a bar. Even the victims might pass it off as alcohol-induced, if they didn't get a good look at Fluorite before she began her work.

Destiny City's branch of the Negaverse was looking quite promising, he decided.

Or perhaps not, he winced, watching Fluorite's ungainly descent. "That was terrible," he said, leaping gracefully down to the next roof. "We are definitely working on that! Scaling up the building was fine, but you need to practice the down part. Preferrably before you twist an ankle doing that."

See, Hiro cared. In his own, strange, cat fashion. His focus on the flaws of others was solely for their own benefit. People should be happy he took the time to insult critique them.

Of course, he also gave praise when praise was due. "I like the way you think," he said, slinking forward along the roof. "A very sneaky plot. I approve."

He looked over his shoulder at Fluorite. "Come on, then. You're leading this operation."

"Ah..." Fluorite seemed to stumble on her own words, before she seemed to give up trying to justify her lack of skill all together.

The up part wasn't the problematic part... as long as she wasn't looking down.

To hear that he liked her plan, however, made her happy. To be honest, it wasn't tactical genius that backed the lieutenant's plan. No, she'd just seen something similar in a movie once. Sure, she'd been explained that she was all but anonymous like this - that no one, even people that knew her, even her own brother would look at Fluorite and ever see Ashley Desmond.

But why take unnecessary risks ? Especially since the police had guns and she had two little playing cards.

She still hadn't gathered what she was supposed to do with two playing cards. Play two-card pickup with senshi ? The two offending pieces of cardboard were tucked in her sash, right near the other energy orbs.

"Ah... Thank you. I just thought it seemed better not to be noticed." Fluorite started her way toward the direction she had pointed, her voice lows, her steps silent thanks to the lack of soles on her feetwraps. "I don't want to figure out if I can outrun a bullet... To say nothing about senshi."

She croutched once they had reached the end of the line, observing the alley - it was empty, and so she jumped on the dumpster and then down on the ground - where she pressed her back against the wall and looked toward the bar.

"This is the boring part." She whispered to her feline companion. The waiting game now. Fluorite never did stay still and wait very well.
