Welcome!

Our small city of Baston offers much by the way of opportunity. Would you make your living as muscle-for-hire, a thief, an assassin, or an adventurerer? Would you want to live for the moment and make your fortune now, or would you rather go and see what all the mystery at the corner of the kingdom is?

Before we jump into our little adventure, of course, there is always a history lesson. It is currently considered the only plausible story behind the mysterious Grey Area:

The Story of the Grey Area

Once upon a time, the Surveyors’ Guild reported a strange area in the northeast corner of the kingdom. Everything was completely dead and grey there. The current King’s Father, Mercutio, heard about this and was immediately suspicious. Addlethorpe, the neighboring kingdom, had been growing more and more aggressive lately. Still, what kingdom could cause such a thing? Besides, the Grey Area was partially on their territory. Protective of his small kingdom, Mercutio shut off all trade lines that went through that part of the territory. No one was permitted to travel through there.
However, the public wouldn’t handle total ignorance of the Grey Area. Mercutio and the heir to the throne, Benedict, travelled to the Grey Area themselves. This also ties in the Strongman’s Guild. They were recruited to guard Benedict and the Father Mercutio along the way, but the guards were sent away at the corner of the Grey Area. It was recorded that they were in the Grey Area for approximately three hours. When they returned, Mercutio was insane and Benedict, although having a healthy mental state, appeared quite shaken up. They said that the Grey Area was incredibly dangerous and, once again, no one was to travel through there. A small fence was put up around it, and no one ever travelled to the small place again.
Along with his madness, Mercutio also had a ‘special’ condition. He would lock himself in his chambers for once a month, and beyond that, no one really knew. Benedict vanished from society almost entirely, no longer attending meetings or doing other princely duties. When asked, Mercutio said that Benedict had travelled to a far land and would not be returning soon. He had no contact with Benedict. This was the story, and no one terribly accepted it (it was known that Benedict hated travelling) but no one argued otherwise.
When Mercutio died of his madness, Benedict’s brother stepped into power. For the first year, he ignored the Grey Area entirely, but soon, the current King was forced to deal with it. The prince of Addlethorpe will soon be visiting to hold a meeting on what to do about the terrible area…

Mercutio----> Benedict (first-born, rightful Heir) & the Current King (put in power because of Benedict's alleged disappearance)

The Story of the Magician’s Guild

Once upon a time, before the Grey Area existed, the kingdom was at terrible war with Addlethorpe. The small kingdom was barely surviving, staving off just enough of the soldiers so that their kingdom wouldn’t be overrun. It was soon clear, though, that the tiny kingdom of Baston wouldn’t survive long without some intervention.
One woman, by the name of Adelaide, came forward and said that she had a means of winning every battle the kingdom would encounter. Magic. Not really believed by anyone, she was allowed to perform her magic. Shockingly, they won the battle. The King immediately appointed her to the highest position that she could have been in: The Royal Advisor.
Baston thrived wonderfully for a while. Adelaide performed her magic, the King could focus on the economy, and it was rumored a sweet romance was blossoming between the two. Then Addlethorpe, after building up its defenses, waged war on Baston again. The King asked Adelaide to help. Adelaide, after trying multiple times, said it was impossible, they must have stronger magic on their side as well. There was nothing she could do.
Angry and stressed from the public pressure, the King immediately fired Adelaide and took control of the battle himself. They lost badly, and the King had to give up some land in order to keep the peace with Addlethorpe. Adelaide was soon regarded as a public enemy and, soon, and order went out for her to be captured.
A small, secret organization began to develop and it was called the ‘Magician’s Guild’. It often partnered with the Thieves’ Guild, as anyone found in the Guild was sentenced to death. They were a small, elite group of magicians. Because of magic being outlawed in Baston, they usually did petty magic in order to become a little richer. They also focused on protecting their leader, Adelaide.
One day, on a small trading caravan robbing mission, the Magician’s Guild and the Thieves’ Guild were ambushed by the Strongman’s Guild. They were quickly captured, including Adelaide. The Thieves’ Guild and Magician’s Guild was sentenced to death, excluding Adelaide. The Thieves’ Guild, as they typically do, managed to escape before they were executed. Only a few of the Magician’s Guild managed to escape, while most were stuck in their windowless cells, bound for execution.
Perhaps the king was feeling merciful, perhaps he remembered the love they had shared a few years before, but the king sentenced Adelaide for exile instead of execution. Adelaide, incredibly angry, announced that as long as she lived the kingdom’s destruction would be her only goal in life and the king would be powerless to stop it. Adelaide then left the kingdom, never to be seen again.

The Setting

Addlethorpe

The kingdom opposite to where this story takes place, Addlethorpe is a major trading point with Baston and they are close allies. However, there is always a strict patrol going along the border of Baston and Addlethorpe, except on the small boundary that lays in the Grey Area. It is a bigger kingdom than Baston, however, it is a little bit more lawless than Baston. It’s certainly richer than Baston and should it ever decide to attack, Baston would have a hard time keeping its small kingdom intact. It focuses more on business, has several trade routes across the country, and more or less lets the citizens govern themselves.

Baston
Our small kingdom, where we all live. It started out as a small village and recently only grew as a kingdom after the discovery of rare minerals in the last 300 years. Many people moved there, and more and more buildings were built. It has been recorded that the Strongman’s Guild was established first, then the Thieves’, then the Surveyors’. The Baston royals have always been jealous of the wealth of Addlethorpe, and have been focusing on its economy more and more. Of course, it’s always been said that the King is famous for being ignorant of the important things, like the Grey Area in the North….

Basic Geography of Baston:
The kingdom of Bastion has a vast ocean to the South and a high mountain range to the West. To the northwestern, a small desert manages its way into the kingdom's boundaries. The Northeastern is mainly dominated by the ever-growing Grey Area. The Grey Area is as it says: the sky is grey, the ground is grey, and nothing lives there. Anyone who enters will leave forever changed, either by a bout of temporary insanity or their entire being changed. It is on both Addlethorpe's side and Baston's side, and there is no guarding of the boundary there. However, to the east of the main city a small forest that is rich in resources. Several trade routes wind through it, but the boundary is strictly patrolled. Only trade caravans and those with a special permit is allowed to enter.

Guilds

Strongman's Guild

Here are your bodyguards and your soldiers-for-hire. They have a very high reputation, even having their meeting place in the palace itself. Being in the Strongman’s guild gives you a certain amount of credibility (although most men only usually use the title to impress the ladies at the tavern). Your wealth from this depends on your client: a personal bodyguard from the king gives you an enormous amount of wealth, while being a nameless soldier gives you no gratitude and little money. They are usually bodyguards, soldiers, or they can escort through the territory if one is afraid of travelling alone.

Current Events:

With the kingdom of Addlethorpe's prince visiting, the king wants every able member to be out, protecting the illustrious at the event. They will all be paid generously and be remembered by the higher nobles, but they are warned it will be dangerous. This will be discussed at the coming meeting.

The Strongman's Guild will currently be meeting at the Armory in the Palace.

Current Leader: Audric Sutton
Other Members:

Thieves' Guild

No one mentions this guild, really, because anyone found in it will be sentenced to death by the King himself. It needs to be said, though that most of the people in this guild are clever enough to avoid death. These are the thieves, the ne’er-do-wells, and, yes, the hired assassins. Because of their lawlessness, it’s rather hard to institute rules or even a ‘leader’. Their rates are quite high and they get paid well, but is it worth it? For quite a few, the glitter of gold certainly is. They are usually thieves, swindlers, or assassins.

Current Events: With the new event coming up, there's a rush of new people coming into town. People to rob, people to swindle...you get the picture. However, there is a bigger fish to fry: Addlethorpe's prince is coming, too. Addlethorpe is a very rich kingdom. Therefore, a kidnapping will be discussed at the coming meeting.

The Thieves' Guild will be meeting at the Tavern.

Current Leader: Vincent Xerxillia
Other Members: Mary Farington, Nera Ranger

Surveyor's Guild

With the strange beasts and creatures on the horizon, the need for adventurers and surveyors grew. This hardy group often goes out to explore and adventure through the forest, mountains, deserts, and yes, sea. Some are there to report back at the kingdom for monsters and such, while some are there just to collect treasure and sell. Depending on what path they choose, the surveyor’s guild can either be extremely profitable or not so profitable, but you gain friends in high places. They are usually adventurers, mapmakers, or traders.

Current Events:
Most traders are considering taking the next couple of days off, because the trading routes will be clogged with people. However, a lot of the surveyors are taking advantage of this event and leaving on an expedition to the Grey Area and gain some knowledge of this strange place. It will be their first expedition. Of course, if exploring the 'Grey Area' isn't really the type of thing you'd like to do, one can always take advantage of the people in town and start trading, and other things surveyors do.

The Surveyors' Guild will be meeting in the small outpost outside of town.

CURRENT PLOT LINES

Grey Area:
There is a worrying 'dead' space in the Northeastern of the territory. Everything is dead there, but people are getting curious about it. Those who have travelled there have reported the following:
1. Some who go there 'change' complete forms. (Ex. The King's Father, in the history, visited there and changed from human to werewolf.)
2. Some who go there suffer from bouts of temporary insanity.
3. Any items brought in or out of the Grey Area turns to ash.

Prince Visitation:
Due to the aforementioned Grey Area, Adderthorpe is visiting, most important of all, his prince. There will be a small reception before and after the actual meeting, and the Thieves' Guild has their eye on him. The Strongman's Guild have already been recruited for protection, and of course, the topic of the meeting is of great interest to the Surveyor's Guild.

Benedict:

Benedict, the rightful heir to the throne, visited the Grey Area to his father. It is documented that he did return, however, he was never seen by the public again. There were many rumors that he was killed by his brother for kingship, he went mad alongside his father, but the most common rumor was that he was no longer human. Many people were curious about him, and he would be the only person living who experienced the Grey Area firsthand...

Strongman's Guild Profiles:
Leader: Username: XThe_Lily_Of_The_ValleyX
Name: Audric Sutton
Age: 31
Appearance:Audric
Personality: Audric speaks in a very quiet voice, is generally very laid-back. This can often come out as arrogance. He has a bad habit of drawing out his sword and threatening a fight before one is really needed because he’s protective of his kingdom and worries quite a bit for the well-being of ‘his’ kingdom. His heart’s in the right place, but he can occasionally go overboard.
Guild: Captain of the Strongman’s Guild
History: Audric was born one step below a noble, that is, the son of a knight. He was nearly destined for the role of the Strongman Guild leader, being the highest in rank than quite a few of the members. When he began his training at the tender age of seven, he realized just how big a world was out there. It had always held a curiosity for him. He initially wanted to become a bodyguard or a soldier: something that took him outside.
That was when he met a pretty young girl named Alice Lovelace in his late teens. They had fallen in love, but not only was she low class but she was also accused of petty theft, something that Audric’s strict father wouldn’t allow. Alice was a bright young explorer in the Surveyor’s Guild who had a meager living drawing up maps. However, she had admitted to Audric that what she really wanted to be was a treasure hunter. That life, even if he had to give up his life as he knew it in the medieval town of Barton, sounded very tempting.
Audric had prepared his bags and left Barton for good. He and Alice, although not legally married, had taken up the façade of being so, travelled from town to town. They had traversed through the desert, through the forest, through the sea, and through every corner of the kingdom…except for the Grey Area. Alice and he had discovered treasure, but nothing big enough to make them legendary. Alice became convinced that the Grey Area harbored ea treasure that would be worth millions. Audric was not so sure. Every child born and raised in Barton had heard frightening tales of the Grey Area.
However, Alice’s persistence eventually broke him and they traveled to the Grey Area. As soon as they reached the border, Audric refused to enter. Alice threatened to leave him if Audric didn’t follow her into the Grey Area: adventure, she promised. She needed him for protection, she said. Although Audric didn’t want to lose Alice and certainly didn’t want her to get hurt, he refused to go into the Grey Area and begged Alice not to go.
Alice finally conceded and they took up camp for the night. When Audric woke the next morning, Alice was gone, her stuff was missing, and she left a note saying she had went into the Grey Area. Audric, petrified, ran to the corner of the Grey Area and screamed her name, searching for her and ran the entire length of the area. Finally, he summoned up his courage and ran into the Grey Area. He felt his senses and his mind began to leave him. Worried of what exposure to the Grey Area would do, he left and never saw Alice again.
With guilt, he returned back to Barton and his father and then resumed his training. The Surveyor’s Guild no longer held the allure but it held very bad memories for him. No longer the ambitious young man he once was, he took up a low position in the Strongman’s Guild and began to work his way up slowly. The king noticed him and was pleased with the detachment and diligence Audric gave to his missions. After working solely with the king for a short time, Audric was put into a high position in the Strongman’s Guild. It was only a short matter of time before the Thieves’ Guild killed the tyrannical captain of the Strongman’s Guild and then the quiet Audric was put in charge.

Name: Vincent Xerxillia

Age: 22

Appearance: Vincent

Personality: Vincent is a very easy-going peson, calm and collective when he needs to be. He gets along with others easy, and likes to help anyone he can. Underneath his outer personality, he hides a demon, a ruthless killer, someone who isn't bothered by killing for sport.

Guild: Theives (Leader)

History: What a messed up world we live in... Vincent often found himself mulling over those words. Usually it brought him back to his past.
Growing up on a simple farm taught Vincent many things, such as things are only earned through hard work, humility, and the grace of an honest job. Yet, when he was twelve, and it was all taken from him, he dropped the last of his values. Honesty wasn't needed in this world, not when so much was turned around, so much was backwards, and so much was just plain wrong. The powerful and rich did not deserve it, and those who did were left in the gutter.
As he learned to live on his own, Vincent turned to stealing to get himself by. Though he did so, he never took from those that needed it, and only targeted those who could do without what he took. This went on for many years, until the day he was careless... Being caught by a guard was a terrible thing, and then man did not even want to turn Vincent in. He was going to kill him in the alley, right then and there. That's when another young man saved him, knocking the guard out cold.
Years passed, and Vincent and his new-found friend worked together, eventually bringing others around them together. A small band of theives formed under Vincent, which would eventually turn into the greatest adventure for their lives.
Two more years passed, and the small band was eventually brought forward to the Theives guild in the city. The guild had heard of them, and their work. The small band, consisting of six people, were all accepted into the guild, and in came to fruitation that Vincent himself was singled out by the leader at the time to become the next leader. Though some were sceptical at first, Vincent proved himself time and again in his jobs, and even with his relationships. Finally, as the last leader of the guild passed, Vincent took the lead, and rules with an iron fist, alongside a kind heart.

Appearance: Mary
Personality: Mary’s very gruff, blunt, and strict. She doesn’t harbor any loyalty towards anyone who doesn’t pay any money, and would therefore sell anyone out, even to the King. However, she isn’t stupid, and knows that many people who would be worth financially selling out (aka, everyone in the Thieves’ Guild), could turn around and stab her in the back. So those in the Thieves’ Guild were safe. However, she has been known to know several unsavory things about some people, and wouldn’t think twice about speaking to the Thieves’ Guild. One would have to search very hard to find a heart within Mary.
Guild: The Thieves’, of course.
History: Mary was born being a thief and knew therefore that she had only one goal in life: to make money. She became the owner of an inn very young in life, inherited by her parents. Her parents in the Surveyor’s Guild and Thieves’ Guild, respectively, and when she was sixteen on the dot her parents offered her a choice: lead a respectable but rather frustrating life as a surveyor or lead the dangerous and exciting life as a thief. It took Mary approximately fourteen seconds to respond in the latter. In the Thieves’ Guild, it was quite apparent she wouldn’t become an assassin, so thief was a rather nice option. She’s been in this position ever since and has since become a trusted members of the Thieves’ Guild
Magic?: No.
Other: She owns the tavern where the Thieves’ Guild usually meets.

Name: Nera Ranger
Age: 21
Appearance: 6', thin face, high cheek bones, clear complexion, small boned, long red hair, small grass green eyes,
Personality: Trickster, funny, sweet
Guild: Thieves Guild
History: My mother and father were both magicians. They were the healers of the thieves guild till my mother died giving birth to me. My father was left to healing the sick and injured and to raising me. He taught me everything about healing. He taught me how to make salves from healing plants and poisons from the deadly. He taught me how to harness the power within me to heal bones and mend cuts. The older I got though the more I wanted to learn how to make the cuts and break the bones, so I practiced in secret, for father disagreed with use our power for that. On the eve of my 19th birthday my father caught me practicing offensive magic. And we argued yelling at one another liked we had never yelled before. The next morning my loving father was gone. Nothing but a note was left on the table. It told me he told me he loved me and that his time to leave me had come. Two years later I am offering use of my magic to help kidnap a Prince
Magic?: Yes

Username: XThe_Lily_Of_The_Valley
Name: Sybil Claybrooke
Age: 24
Appearance: Sybil
Personality: Sybil’s a bit of a strange one and very absentminded. She often rambles to herself on strange topics and has a habit of wandering away by herself. Often she’ll rather work alone than with other people. However, when it comes down to it, she loves the Surveyor’s Guild very much and would risk her life to protect anyone in it. She forms ties rather easily, even to inanimate objects.
Guild: Surveyor’s Guild
History: Sybil was born very poor and the daughter of a peace-loving artist who taught Sybil creativity. Most of her father’s paintings were of landscapes, both reality and fantastical, and so he often took Sybil out of town to wander about Barton’s outskirts. Her mother and father both lived very long, almost until Sybil felt confident enough to go and learn a living on her own.
Sybil’s mother had known Adelaide for the short amount of time that Adelaide was in town, and had even housed her in secret for a short time. Sybil’s mother had joined the Magician’s Guild and was a wholehearted member, at least, until the Magician’s Guild was disbanded. Sybil’s mother was an outcast afterwards, called a witch and a traitor, but she agreed with magic. Sybil learned a few simple spells at a very early age, and if given time, she could recite them perfectly.
Although she doesn’t really tell anyone, Sybil was once part of the Thieves’ Guild for a very short time. For some bizarre reason, Sybil had a sick fascination with being an assassin. It lasted only until the end of her first job, when upon meeting the target she announced that he was too ‘nice’ to be killed. Her Thieves’ Guild career ended very soon after that.
The Surveyor’s Guild welcomed her with open arms, and Sybil became a member. She knows she will never be captain, she doesn’t want to be captain, and would be happy being a member forever.
Magic?: Very simple magic: minor healing/shield spell, a fire spell strong enough to start a campfire.

Name: Alexander "Axel" Silver
Age: 20
Appearance: [Link]
Personality: Confident, friendly, adventurous, curious, sneaky, quick, witty, and funny. Most of the traits that are needed in a good adventurer or theif. Though, he does have a few faults, as any average person would. He's loud, doesn't think before he acts, has a very large sweet tooth, could be considered 'stupid' or 'slow', and is EXTREMELY claustrophobic.
Guild: Surveyor's Guild
History: Alexander Silver, known by most as only "Axel", grew up as an only child. He was raised by his mother, who was constantly ill and couldn't hold a job to save their lives. Alexander's father was part of the Strongman Guild, before being killed on a job... Alexander also had an older sister, who mysteriously disappeared after joining the Theives Guild. This was all when Alexanderl was very young, so he doesn't remember those two family members very well. Anyway, when Alexander was a little older, he started working to support his mom and himself. Though, one winter, Alexander had lost his job, his mother was sick, and they didn't have enough money to buy medicine... So Alexander wound up stealing it. Though he was never caught. That night, when he came home, his mother had died of her illness. In dispair of having lost his whole family, Alexander burned down his home, mother's corpse, stolen medicine, everything he had ever known and done was burned with that house. He was 18 at that point, and from then on, changed his name to simply 'Axel'. He never gives away his full name to anyone, unless absolutely necessary. Around this time, Axel joined the Surveyor's Guild in an attempt to forget about the life he left behind, and to clean his sin-stained hands. Though how treasure hunting could do anything to clense him, I don't know. Axel has always had a very... Different... way of thinking.
Magic?: Nopity nope nope. At least... Not that I know of...
Other: Not really, I don't think... How 'bout I get back to you on that?

There we are, I tweaked the story a little and separated it into two sections so it's a bit clearer.
PostPosted: Mon Mar 21, 2011 7:52 pm

It is a bit clearer, but now I have another concern. Is the King's Father and Benedict two different people? Because how you worded it, it could be either or.

I'm thinking, maybe give everyone names? Or, if people will play these characters, give them indications of a name.
Like: "xxxx" or "-----" or "...."

Because, as of right now, I have no idea if there are three generations or two, or if the King's Father and Benedict are the same person. Okay?
