The moon was bright in the night sky, casting a ghostly glow over the entire forest. Everything was cast in black and gray, all colors fading until they were practically nonexistent, undetectable to the untrained eye. Nothing moved. An eerie silence hummed through the air. To some it was comforting, to others oppressing, to many it went unnoticed, as they were deep within the realms of slumber.
A few lonesome stars twinkled through the canopy, spreading a forlorn light across the ether. It was these that the mare observed, standing under a gnarled oak, her pink coat bleached to gray by the mysterious darkness. Her mind was too excited to sleep, unable to succumb to the restful state most were in. So she had chosen to stand outside the cave she called home, eyes fixed upon the Heavens, inhaling the sweet night air.
She felt calm, at ease. There was no apprehension. Darkness enfolded her like a blanket tucked over a foal, keeping her safe. Her silvery bulk blended into the landscape.

"Oh dear... I can't believe this." She sighed to herself, shaking her head at her predicament. "I can't believe I got lost again. I feel so foolish." She added, a bit of color coming to her cheeks. Ever since finally escaping the forest when she was lost as a foal, she vowed not to get lost again. But now that she had garnered the strength to enter the forest again after all these years, the mare did it again.
The same fears that she experienced the first time started to well in her mind. Getting attacked by a kalona, injuring her leg, almost drowning. The part-uni shuddered at the thought. But her experience wasn't completely miserable, she guesses. She did run into some helpful soquili along the path, even a cute foal. True, he later ended up breaking her heart when they met again when they were older, but it was a life experience to learn from.
So now, Kihaku was carefully roaming through the trees, ears scanning her surroundings for any sounds. By this time, it had gotten dark and she couldn't rely on her eyes too much, besides for objects up close. Right now, her first priority, was to find shelter of some kind. Slowly, the mare kept down the path, but as she walked, she was sure she spotted a dark figure up ahead. The only sign of it being a soquili was from the glow the moon casted over it. She paused, unaware of the breed of horse the other was. With lack of bat-like wings, she was certain it wasn't a kalona... or at least, a full-bred one. Cautiously, she started to move toward the figure she saw, hoping it was someone who can help, rather than hinder.

The mare's mind drifted, eyes roving from one blazing star to another. At first, thoughts buzzed through her mind. An old encounter here, a particular phrase someone once said to her, a question that had been nagging at her for a while. But at least the calm night air was good for those thinkers, those who refuse to slip into blissful unconsciousness.
It gave a stark clarity to all her musings, allowing her mind to plough on from one pondering to another quickly. But slowly, as all things eventually do, she began to ran out of thoughts. Her brain slowed till she was doing nothing more than tracing patterns through the darkness, her mind high up in the starry sky.
One constellation blinked back the shape of a bear, and another held the figure of a sword. All different, yet combining in so many different ways. She was calm, she was at peace, she was... what was that rustling?
Perking her ears up, the pale mare drew herself back to earth. At first, she could not see anything, but her eyes were adapted to the poor light and it did not take long before she had pinpointed the source of the movement. A large shape was making its way towards her, seemingly hesitantly. Most of it was bleached a similar shade of gray to her own self, but its hindquarters were obscured by something much darker. She couldn't be sure, but... it seemed to have an equine outline.
"Hello?" She called, her voice exposing nothing but curiosity and good will.

She continued to slowly approach the other, waiting for any sign that the other would notice her and do something about it. Then, the other called out to her, which caused her ears to perk. Well, surely, the tone didn't seem threatening. That was a good sign... hopefully.
"Hello." Kihaku called back softly, yet loud enough for the other could hear her. The mare continued to move closer, trusting that she wasn't making a mistake and walking straight into a trap of some kind.

The shape continued to approach closer. Sakura stood still, not wanting to spook it just in case. Then a soft voice called back her greeting, so quite that the mare could barely pick it up despite the mysterious silence that surrounded her.
Pricking her ears up curiously, Sakura turned fully to face the approaching mare (she could tell it was a mare from the tone of her voice). Slowly, the shape became more distinct. Though all the colors were bleached out in the darkness of the night, the clear equine appearance was stark. A horn, like Sakura's own, adorned the mare's forehead. The tail was woven into a tight braid, and she appeared to be wearing trousers.
"I'm Sakura." Her voice was warm and inviting, "Couldn't sleep yourself?" She curiously asked why the mare was out at such a late time.

Getting even closer to the form she first spotted in the distance, a wave of relief hit her when she saw the other soquili had a horn with a uni's tail, and a lack of wings. It wasn't a kalona, her biggest worried whenever she travels into the forest.
After a few more steps, Kihaku got to where she felt it was a good distance between the two of them. Smiling at the mare, she bowed her head in greeting. "It is nice to meet you Sakura, I'm Kihaku." She introduced herself softly, tail giving a small flick behind her. At the question on if she couldn't sleep, she let out a small, awkward giggle. "Well, not quite. I'm afraid I have gotten myself lost among the trees." She explained. She didn't feel the need to tell the mare that this wasn't the first time she had gotten lost, besides that, she would have found herself getting embarrassed by the confession of her clumsiness.

Even though the mare was naturally social, she felt even closer to this stranger in those few seconds than she had with many even after hours of conversation. It was as though different rules governed the midnight world. The grayed out hues and monochrome trees were in one respect eerie, and yet had an intense calming effect that broke through the usual barriers of society. There was no worry of the stranger's reaction, no pondering over where to take the conversation. Their existence transcended all of this in those dark moments underneath the blanket of stars.
"Kihaku." She replied softly, gently. Her voice was several tones quieter than usual. It seemed... not right to speak too loudly. The sanctity of the peace had to be preserved. In fact, her voice was barely more than a whisper. Raising her head towards the sky, she watched the occasional spark flicker between the leaves of the canopies, the only stars that she could see from here. It saddened her slightly that they were so hard to see, for they were truly beautiful. She would have to stargaze more, once her father returned and she was free to leave the forest.
"Ah, yes. The trees can do that to one's orientation." Tearing her eyes away from the diamond-dotted sky, she huffed gently. A fine mist formed in front of her muzzle as her warm breath mixed with the slightly frigid night air. "Would you like a place to shelter for the night? It is too late to go wandering through the shadows now, but I would be happy to guide you back to the path come sunrise, or to the edge of the forest, or wherever it is you wish to go here." Her offer was genuine, given freely by a loving heart.

Kihaku felt really comfortable around this mare, enough so that she moved a little closer to her. That was not to say that she was distrustful of any other soquili, but with any other first meeting, there is always that small level of unsettledness. But with Sakura, it was pretty much non-existent. It made her rather happy, and she wished things could always be like this.
She sighed softly, quite relaxed despite being lost in the forest while it was dark. Slowly, she lifted her head to glance at the heavens above her. Though most of the skies were concealed, it was stll nice to see the scattered twinkling of the stars and the dancing of the leaves from the wind. With a flick of her braided tail, she returned her gaze to Sakura and smiled warmly at her offer. "That would be lovely, thank you."

Sakura's head bobbed up and down amiably, "Oh, no need to thank me. I'm just glad I can help." Taking a last, deep breath of the chilly air, she turned around to face the direction of her home. Her lithe body twisted around easily, her hooves barely whispering against the ground. The mare was used to travelling quietly, she liked it that way. Nature could just ignore her and continue on, letting her observe its beauty.
"It's just this way, not too far at all from here." Her leonine tail curled up to gesture in the direction she was facing, before it flicked in a beckoning motion to show that they should set off. Sakura led on, careful not to make too much noise. If nothing else, to preserve the sanctity of the peaceful atmosphere. Her light bones and cloven hooves, a result of her mixed heritage, let her glide smoothly across the forest floor.
As she moved, her head nodded up and down to the pace of her gait. Her wings were slightly outstretched, brushing against the foliage all around, helping her to navigate through all the obstacles along the way. Behind her, her tail swished as a counter-balance to her stride.
"What brings one such as yourself here at this time of night?" She whispered, her tone inquisitive.

"Oh, but I do need to thank you. You graciously offered me your home so I don't have to stay out in the darkness by myself. Such a generous action must be repaid, even if it is with a simple sign of gratitude such as a 'thank you'." Kihaku explained, as Sakura turned to show the way. She couldn't help but be amazed at how light and graceful the other mare was as she lead the way to her home.
Slowly, she followed after, gazing around her and through the trees, but always turning to keep an eye on her 'guide'. At the question of what brought her into the forest at night, she tilted her head slightly. "You mean besides having gotten lost? Well, I had originally come into the forest to find some berries, but when I had gotten lost, time seemed to have passed rather fast."Phail Ninja [It's fine, my muse has been really fickle about replying to my RPs for a while]

Sakura let a gentle stream of air blow through her nostrils by way of showing her amusement. "Ah yes, those elusive berries. I've had quite a few people stumble upon my home while searching for them. I guess that's my fault for living so close to the berry bushes, not that I mind at all." Her eyes twinkled with joy as her mind flittered through the various faces of berry-pickers she'd met. No, she didn't mind at all. The company was pleasant, travelling the forest alone could get mightily tiresome on occasion.
Up ahead she could see a pale glow, illuminating the foliage with a grey sheen. Sakura set her course for it, taking a quick look around before stepping in to the gentle moonlight. She raised her head up to the sky, where there was a thin gap in the branches and inhaled deeply. Ah, the sweet night air was lovely here.
The two mares stood in a small clearing, a stream gently tumbling down one side of it, pooling into a still pond at its midway point. It ran off down into the trees, becoming lost from sight in the dense forest. A large, rocky cliff-face blocked off the other side, covered in a dense growth of ferns and ivy.
"Welcome to my home." Sakura gestured towards the cliff-face, using her wing to sweep aside the wall of ferns. Hidden behind them was a spacious cave: the place she had grown up in.
