There was only darkness, for a long while. Her head... her head was throbbing, and her stomach equaled in pain. She felt as if she were walking in the darkness, as if she were calling out. It seemed as if it were an eternity.
Her eyes opened wide, a bright pinkish-red light flashed from them before her cries became a reality. Finally able to see, she stopped, listening to the soundless breath that came from her. Silent now, she blinked slowly, clearing her vision. Her eyes still glowed faintly, and she tried to gather her thoughts. She remembered nothing, and it took her but a few moments to realize she was laying, half buried in rubble. It looked as if there had been a landslide... or an explosion. It was hard to tell which.

 The sun hanging in the sky overhead was heating everything it touched. The rocks, the grass, even his leather coverings. Had he been paying any attention to it he may have found the heat uncomfortable but there was no time to think about his comfort. He was too busy for that. He was looking for something. What that thing was exactly he wasn't entirely sure. It would make things better though and whatever it was he knew that he would know it when he saw it.
The search for this thing, whatever it may be, was what had brought him so far. He had come from the north-western region of the great plains and had now found himself in the south-east heading out of the grasslands altogether. It was here that he stopped staring at a pile of earth fragments that had come together to bury something. It was a something that stirred and cried out, a sound the resonated deeply within him.
Without prompting from him his body moved forward his steps quick, graceful and with purpose. Before he even registered what he was doing he was at the creature's side trying to push the debris off.

She sensed this other long before he had come to her. and by the time he had arrived, her eyes had closed again. In her mind, she felt as if she were somehow one with the male, as if she were comforting him, somehow, and for reasons she herself did not know yet.
She lay perfectly still as he shifted the rocks from her, the feeling was a good one, becoming free, however she was not damaged at all from the rubble, but more from the metal 'halo' embedded into her skull, and the tube coming from her stomach. Her eyes, still closed, she made soft snuffling sounds of appreciation as he continued to work her free.

It was slow work for he had to be careful not to push anything aside and just cause more earth to fall. At best it would bury what he'd just done. At worst it might harm the both of them. So he moved from one rock to the next nudging and shifting them away with either his muzzle or foreleg. The noises she made encouraged him to pick up the pace. He needed to free her.
He knew now, in his heart, that this creature was what he had been seeking all along. This poor creature. He was beginning to make out more of her form as the rubble was cast aside. He was deeply disturbed by what he was seeing. What had been done to her? Why had it been done? It made him angry. He frowned deeply before nosing her gently and returning to his work. He was close to having things cleared now.

The closer he came to freeing her, the more the pain started to set in. The searing white pain from the bolts in her head, from the tube inside of her. Flashes of white lights in her mind made her finally open her eyes. A bright red light shone from them as she started to get up, without letting him finish.
She moved as if she were hardly weighted down at all. Her hair flowed over her, pristine in color, as if it were water. The tube hanging from her belly made a soft metal sound as it clanked against the stone and in a moments time she was completely free. She stood there, completely still, unmoving in any way. He could hear her voice clearly as if she were speaking into his ear, though her lips hardly moved at all.
"You've come..."

The flash of red caught his attention first and caused him to pause in his work. When he noticed that she was in motion, however, he found that there would be no chance, and no reason, to finish. Taking a single swift step backwards he got out of the way of the remnants of the rubble that came cascading down away from her form.
From there he watched as she righted herself, unmoving, expressionless. It was almost shocking the grace that she moved with. And then, in an instant, she grew as still as the rock. He looked on steadily, unsure of what to do or expect but knowing all the while that something was meant to happen. When she spoke it was as though a fog had lifted around his mind and he responded instantaneously.
Without a word he moved toward the unusual female. He had searched so long for her, whoever she was, and clearly she had been waiting for him. "I had to." He answered slowly still unsure of what to expect.

Her actions and words seemed to lack any emotion, any sense of forethought before they were done. Her red, shining eyes, unblinking held his as he drew near. When he was close enough, she silently shifted and drew close before nuzzling into his neck.
The action seeming emotionless and empty, also seemed to hold a weight that on the other hand was indescribable. Finally he could hear her breathing now that she was close. Her body, despite the chill of her skin, seemed warm.

The touch from the mare sent a chill down his spine and gave him the sensation of something gripping his heart and throat. It was not something that Yazoo could explain in words or even in his own thoughts but he knew this was what was supposed to happen. As strange as it was he knew that this was where he was supposed to be, at this strange mare's side. It was almost instinctual, like a newborn creature knowing it's mother. If he was the newborn creature than this mare that called him to here was...
"Mother..." The word both seemed to fit perfectly yet not suit her at all. How strange. He bowed his head to rub against her and felt only the chilly metal on her head. This was right but that was wrong. He frowned. He needed to help her still. Freeing her from the rubble wasn't the end of it, he could tell.

She couldnt deny the comfort she felt from him in return, and for those moments she settled more into him. A faint sigh escaped her as she leaned more of her weight against him. It wasnt until then that she could finally feel the twinges of pain at her skull, her stomach. She could feel a sense of mortality through him. Normally such a thing wouldnt be tolerated, but it was as if a steel chain linked from her heart to his. In the accident, and in the time that had passed, she had forgotten a few things herself.
She didnt respond in words, but there was no mistake her own feelings on the situation as she used him for the moment as her pillar.

He planted his hooves more firmly on the ground to better support the mare's weight. He could see that things were wrong with the mare, he had noticed it from the start but now he could feel it as well. She needed him so there he was. Yazoo understood this better than he understood most things as though he had been born with the knowledge already within him. He would help this mare in anyway she needed. Even if, logically, it made no sense. After all, this had been their first meeting.
Still, his life was hers.
