Pomona was excited. She was practically dancing in place, coin fringe jingling with each bounce. Earlier that morning she had called Sydney to tell her that they were going on a picnic. She also informed her fellow redhead that she had no choice but to come – as if the other teen would pass up food – and to bring sunscreen and water. She had warned her friend to dress for “the hottest summer day ever,” but refused to explain what she meant. Not that Pomona thought she had been very mysterious. After all, she had told her friend to meet her in Senshi form.

Glancing at the basket in her hand, Pomona lifted the lid to double-check the contents. Everything was there, but in her excitement she couldn’t help but feel like she had forgotten something.

When she had received the call from Rosa, she had no clue what she was in for. Nonetheless, Sydney obeyed her warning and donned a thin tank top and shorts—which sort of disappeared when she transformed, but oh well. She had tried! Sinon figured she could yank off her chaps, anyways. She would still have her shorts afterwards.

Underestimating her friend’s words, she brought a half-used tube of sunscreen and a single bottle of water. “Pomona!” she yelled, waving and grinning at her fellow redhead. Sinon’s eyes gravitated towards the basket and her beam stretched even more. “I hope you packed dessert in there.” She laughed, curiously searching Pomona’s hands. “Where’s your phone?”

“ Phone? Oh, here.” Pomona waved dug in her basket and pulled out her Senshi phone, waving it with a grin.

“ Of course I’ve got dessert. Whether or not you’ll still be capable of tasting it by the time you get to it, well, that’s another story.”

Laughing, Pomona slid her phone open and threw Sinon a mischevious look.

“ So… The Shire.” Pomona paused dramatically, letting Sinon recall the literary land of the Halflings. Seeing as how Pomona’s mother was obsessed with The Lord of the Rings, Sinon should very well know what she was talking about. “ What if I told you we were going to have our picnic in The Shire?”

“Nice.” She stared at Pomona, her eyebrows furrowed and eyes wide as she silently sent her the message I C WUT U DID THAR. “You have my very suspicious, but I shall continue with this proposition of yours. I want dessert. If there was one thing Sinon did not like to pass up, it was sweets.

As the senshi of peppers paused, Sinon curiously raised her head to the sky as she dredged up her memories of The Lord of the Rings. Books were not her favorite things. With some effort, she imagined acres of grassy land filled with rivers and marshes, along with other geographical assortments. Whimsically, she threw in a couple Hobbits to entertain herself. “I would expect little Hobbits to be scurrying around when we arrive, then,” she answered with the utmost of seriousness.

“ There’ll be at least a couple of tall hobbits when we get there.” Literally. One “hobbit” being rather taller then the other.

“ Right, off we go!”

Sliding her phone open, Pomona dialed in the magic numbers, and after a split second pause, the magic tugged on them, pulling, sucking, and-

“ Bam! Ohh, nice.”

They had not landed in the middle of some narrow path like Pomona had on her first trip. Instead they were on low stone bridge, the gentle hills in front of them riddled with hobbit-like homes and abundance of overgrown plants. The main road skirted the edge of the hills, curving behind them and up a slightly rockier hill that was crowned with several lumps suspciously-shaped ivy.

“ Hey, so this place does have - had - cities! Er, towns.”

Clapping her hands in happily – there was just something about being here that felt right – Pomona turned to Sinon.

“ Welcome to Planet Pomona, hothouse and home of space hobbits.” Except that there didn’t seem to be anyone other then them there. “ Well, at least two tall, temporary space hobbits.”

Glancing up at the high, domed lattice of glass and metal that seemed to encase the whole planet, Pomona tugged at her uniform’s collar. “ Literal hothouse too, apparently. That’d be why the request for hot weather clothes. Er… I’m assuming we can power down without any consequences?”

Pomona was somewhat fuzzy on that fact, hence why she’d had Sinon meet her in Senshi form. She wasn’t sure how all this magical, interplanetary travel stuff worked beyond how to “phone home.”

“ So, where do you want to go? Since you’re my guest, I’ll let you choose. Just be careful with the plants; some of those suckers have thorns.”

Hobbits. Sinon gave Pomona a blank stare. “You’re not joking?” For a split second, she felt a pang of disappointment at the idea of a tall hobbit. Hobbits were supposed to be small, after all. She shook it off. Hobbits were hobbits, regardless of height.

She watched her punch in a series of numbers. As soon as Pomona pressed the last button, Sinon could feel the familiar pull of magic. It reminded her of the last time she visited her own planet. Unpleasant and awkward memories instantly came to mind. Sinon frowned and pushed the uncomfortable images out of her mind.

Upon arrival, Sinon stumbled forward a few steps before she managed to regain her balance. Rather than take in the natural scenery, Sinon pulled at her chaps. Pomona was not kidding when she said to dress like it was the hottest day. She managed to tug off the leggings. “You know, I didn’t think space hobbits existed, since hobbits sort of came from a book . . . made from a human . . . not from space,” admitted Sinon.

“Not sure. Can humans survive here?” She shrugged as she stood up, tossing her chaps to the side. Sinon was confident they would magically reappear on her next henshin, just like how her fuku liked to mysteriously mend itself for the next battle. “I don’t know. What kind of places do you have here?” To be honest, she was tempted to stupidly frolic around and see where that took her, and it was evident in her excited, wandering gaze.

“ I think Tolkien was a Pomonian.” Pomona said sagely, as if imparting great wisdom instead of making a blatantly absurd claim.

Pomona was almost comfortable in her fuku. Almost. She suspected that if given time to acclimate, she could become accustomed to the heat. As it was, a cold drink was sounding good, so that meant finding a place to sit.

“ I say we poke into one of those hobbit holes to eat. I think they’ll be cooler then the town.” Not that Pomona had ever been in a hobbit hole or in the town, she’d just read that it was cooler in the ground.

“ Places? Hm, I haven’t seen much. I get the feeling this is more of a rural, farming sort of planet; no big cities and such. There are lots of plants though; some with thorns and some with peppers. I want to find some peppers to bring back if I can.”

Pomona walked up the road to the nearest hill-house, making her way to a gate in a wall of overgrown shrubbery. Gently nudging the sagging wooden gate open, Pomona waved her friend over.

“ Well, let’s see what we have, shall we?”

The “garden” looked like it had been a patio once upon a time. The tiles covering the area were cracking and had weeds growing up between them, but there were still several chairs and a couple of tables grouped together to indicate a sort of social area. Pomona was tempted to grab a chair, but she wasn’t sure if they’d hold her weight. Shaking her head, she continued to the big, round door, and after jiggling the doorknob a few times, she finally got it to swing open.

It was kinda disappointing, really. Pomona wasn’t sure what she had been expecting, but it wasn’t this. It looked like the occupants of the house had moved out and it had been abandoned ever since. There was very little furniture, and no personal effects to be seen.

“ Humph! Where’s all the stuff?”

Shrugging, she moved into the nearest room – it had big windows, but was still not as sticky-hot as outdoors – and put the basket down, pulling out the blanket and spreading it out over the worn stone floor.

“ Good enough I guess. I’ve got sandwiches, potato salad, brownies, and soda. There’s also some cheese, but I’d save that for if we manage to find some peppers.”

“Oh really now?” responded Sinon, quirking a curious brow at her friend’s bold theory. There was, after all, no concrete evidence that Tolkien indeed hailed from Pomona, despite the suspicious fact that this was pretty damn similar to The Hobbit.

She was now in shorts and her fuku top, but it was still uncomfortably warm. Sinon grimaced, lightly pulling on her clothes as she grimaced at Pomona. “If only your planet wasn’t so freaking hot.” She shook her head disappointingly, but a joking grin tugged at her lips. At least she didn’t feel like she was being baked alive in gigantic oven—that would suck balls. A couple hours on planet Pomona wouldn’t kill her. Hopefully.

“You really think it’s cooler in these holes?” She threw the other girl an incredulous look before ambling a few steps towards the nearest burrow and leaning forward to curiously stare at the abandoned abode. “An agricultural planet, huh? That’s interesting, but I’m sure there’s at least, like, one city somewhere here, right? Maybe? Yes? No? Maybe so?” Sinon dutifully leapt after her friend, joining Pomona in a few quick jumps. She reached out for Pomona’s shoulders and casually propped her chin on top of Pomona’s head. “We shall.”

Somehow, Sinon was unsurprised by the shabby appearance of the home. Her own planet was rather desolate and the cities just as rundown, if not worse. Briefly, she entertained the thought that most of the other senshi planets were just as abandoned and she vaguely had to wonder why. She tried not to ponder the idea too much.

Finally releasing her hold on Pomona, Sinon walked around the hobbit hole. She shrugged. “I don’t know, but whoever lived here must’ve hightailed it a long time ago.” She followed Pomona into the room and plopped right next to the basket, broadly beaming. Eagerly, Sinon rubbed her hands together. “Finally—what I’ve been waiting for the entire time!”

She leaned over and flipped open the basket, ogling the food Pomona had packed. Immediately her gaze went towards the soda and brownies, but Sinon held back her temptation. Dessert and sugar had to be saved for last. “Peppers?” The redhead crinkled her freckled nose as she took out a sandwich. “I think I’ll pass on that. I like my sweets much better.”

“ More cheese for me then. I’m determined to survive eating a Pomona pepper.” It was almost embarrassing to admit that one of her planet’s peppers had bested her. Almost. Her planet was known for peppers – or so she assumed, being the Senshi of Peppers – so she figured that lessened the sting.

“ Help yourself!” Pomona said, pulling containers from the basket and fixing herself a plate. The potato salad seemed almost cool in the mouth, which she found quite refreshing. After she’d finished off her first mouthful, she finally asked the questions that had been burning in her mind.

“ So what’s your planet like? Is it abandoned too? Has it got lots of cities? What’s the climate like? Did you remember anything?”

The questions were rattled off at fast, only to abruptly stop as Pomona looked at her friend with wide, expectant eyes, eagerly awaiting answers. Planet Sinon was an unknown, a mystery, and Pomona simply had to know more. She could be patient about some things, but not when it came to learning. Her thirst for knowledge was seemingly unquenchable, and given half a chance she’d be happy to sit here and grill her friend for every minute detail.

“That’s fine. I can survive with just one slice of cheese on my sandwich. I won’t die…probably, hopefully, maybe.” Sinon leaned over, her arm reaching into the basket for a sandwich. She frowned and stared at her friend with pitying eyes. “A Pomona pepper. I can only imagine how hot that’ll be. I sense great danger and trouble for you in the near future.” She held her frown and gently shook her head. “I knew thee well. Good luck.” With that, Sinon took a hearty bite out of her food.

“Mai puranet?” she repeated between mouthfuls of sandwich goodness. She swallowed and paused, recollecting her memories of planet Sinon. “Yeah, it’s abandoned. I have a feeling most planets are abandoned too, but maybe that’s just me.” The trip had been a while ago. Most of the intricate details were fuzzy and long gone, but the gist of the journey still remained etched in her mind. “I don’t know how many cities it has, but after a bit of walking I came across one. The architecture is pretty cool! It’s sorta futuristic. The buildings are more circular and curvier, with lots of spindly roads on the ground and in the air.” She tried to draw out a picture of the city she saw with her finger as a pencil and the floor as a canvas, but it was no use. “Let me take you there sometime.”

" I tried eating a Pomona pepper before and it was hot. I think the cheese will help." This merited some thought though. Three glasses of milk had only taken the edge off of the last pepper she had tried. Maybe cheese wouldn't be enough.

" ...well, that or I'll take some home and de-seed them." No need to embarass herself again.

As Sinon described her planet, Pomona's mind began to swim with images. It sounded like a place she wanted to see. Planet Pomona was nice, don't get her wrong - very domestic and homey - but not very spacey. She wanted to see clean, towering buildings and hovercars and stuff.

" Futuristic is good! You better take me, because I'll bug you until the day you do." And she would. She would. " Any signs of advanced technology?"

An idea struck her, one that made her face glow with glee.

" Your planet sounds like a good place to play laser tag." She made a gun with her hand and imitated a gun, making 'pew-pew' noises. " A fitting setting."

“Hot. Ya. If you think it’s hot than my tongue will definitely be on fire, without a doubt. There’s no way I’m gonna eat a Pomona pepper. You can’t even pay me.” Sinon found herself wincing at the thought of herself so much as nibbling on the bright red vegetable. She sensed potential death by pepper and she shuddered. “To be on the safe side you should de-seed them, or just eat them at home where you have a large supply of milk and cheese at your disposal.” The soldier of lies could not handle spice.

Sinon stuck her tongue out. “Very well, if the queen insists.” She waved her arm with a flourish and mockingly bowed, though it wasn’t quite right since she was sitting down with a sandwich in her hand. “I’m not sure. I didn’t really dig around the buildings, but I don’t see why not. Looks pretty futuristic to me.” She shrugged and took a bite out of the sandwich.

“Lazah tag?” she repeated thoughtfully, her mouth filled with food. “Hmmm.” Sinon directed her eyes to the ceiling as she reviewed the proposition. “That sounds like a good idea, actually,” she agreed after swallowing. “I dunno if laser tag equipment will work there. You think it will?”

“ I don’t see why laser tag wouldn’t work; just needs batteries, yeah? Unless magic would interfere with it somehow.”

Kinda like Hogwarts, but bigger. And spacey-er.

“ Well, I’m going to go pick me some peppers real quick. You sit tight and enjoy the shade, I’ll be back in a sec.”

Pomona was pretty sure she had spotted some peppers on the way in, so she grabbed a Tupperware out of the basket and left the little hill-house. Sure enough, a couple feet from the weedy entrance to the house was a bush of red peppers. Pomona got on her knees and reached for the peppers, not noticing that one of the plants entagled with the pepper bush had thorns. She managed to get two peppers before her luck held out and a thorn pricked.

“ OW! For the love of- WHY do so many plants on my planet have blasted thorns?”

She glared at the plant before she resumed her pepper-picking, but it quickly became apparent that something was off. Her thorn-p***k wound had started to burn, and that burning sensation was steadily increasing in strength.

“ Cra-”

Grabbing her Tupperware, Pomona scurried back to her friend.

“ Evil plants with evil thorns! How to you wash pepper juice out of a cut?” By now Pomona was flapping her hand, hoping that the movement would cool it, but no such luck. “ Ooo, not cool! I hate to cut our picnic short, but I have to concede defeat to my planet again.”
PostPosted: Wed Sep 21, 2011 7:04 pm

“I hope it doesn’t. I wanna play laser tag on my planet. I could like, snipe you from above or below! And do dramatic jumping down from one road to another! Dude, it’d be so bamf.” Sinon nodded sagely before energetically waving her friend off as Pomona searched for some peppers. Judging from what the shorter redhead had told her and the fact that Pomona was a senshi of peppers, Sinon could only imagine how intense it would be to even nibble one. Not pleasant. While Pomona left the burrow in search of peppers, Sinon continued to silently munch on her sandwich, taking out large bites one by one until everything had disappeared into the hole called her stomach.

When the senshi of peppers returned, Sinon’s cheeks were puffed up like a squirrel holding nuts in its mouth. “Peppah juice? From plant?” she mumbled as she struggled to swallow. While she was puzzled by the revelation—thorns covered in pepper juice?—she couldn’t say she was that surprised either. This was a planet of peppers—technically it wasn’t but still—after all. Sinon rolled off the blanket and hurried to put all of the condiments and food back into the basket. “Don’t worry about it! We can always come back here next time. You can take back your peppers and…I dunno, make a super spicy sandwich with them.”

" I forgot that handling spicy peppers can be enough to irritate the skin. It's never bothered me before, but I never had a thorn-p***k for the peppers to irritate before either."

Her grandmother had peppers in her garden and Pomona knew that the gardener always wore gloves when picking them. Now she knew why.

" One day I will bring you back once I have learned the ways of my planet and defeated the evil thorny-weeds. Then we can have a nice, uninterrupted lunch."

She fumbled with her phone, taking it out as she shook a fist at the plants visible through the large window in the hill-house. Ever so briefly the vision blurred, showing what looked like more subdued plants, and Pomona knew, just knew that the thorny-weeds would have been considered a nuisance even in the past.

" I guess in the meantime we'll just have to play lots of laser tag."

Sucking on the burning cut - not the best idea, since know her mouth was starting to burn - Pomona hurriedly jabbed at her phone, and in a shimmer of lights they vanished.
