Chapter One.

Screams filled the air of Konohagakure no Sato, in a dread silenced village, a lone shinobi stood on the Hokage Mountain overlooking the madness. In his mind there was no hope to continue living in a waste land such as this. He thought of his friends, well the few that were left anyways, and he thought of the love of his life that had ended up being murdered by an Iwa-nin looking the assassinate the Hokage.

"Kashi," the man muttered as his heart filled with a longing sadness that just wouldn't go away. The shinobi fell to his knees as he tried to drown out the sounds of terror in the background. Tears poured down the same tracks that have been there since his love had died.

"Kashi...I need your h-help, I d-don't know w-wh-what to do anym-more."

As he sobbed, a shinobi had approached him from behind, and a hand reached for his shoulder.

"Hokage-sama," the voice said, "all of us have something important for you waiting be act headquarters. "

The one named Hokage wiped at his tears and turned toward the other shinobi.

"Sakura." The Hokage turned to face his long time friend with a warm, but sad expression.

"Naruto, we all want to give you this...you have been working on it ever since the very first of our friends started to die. I, we, want to use your jutsu to save them and Kakashi-sen-" her voice hitched on the last name knowing Naruto's emotions. Naruto had finally won happiness and the knowledge of love and then it was just ripped away from him a moment later.

"What? You want to use that jutsu knowing that the others and yourself won't survive!" Naruto exclaimed.

"If it's to get back the one's we love, then yes." She argued thinking about her old crush Sasuke and her deceased husband Lee.

"Okay then."

*****Scene Change!*****

"Now, if you guys are ready? We have worked on this for the past three days and I think we're ready, no, I know we can do this." As soon as it was ready and double checked, everyone got into their positions and started the hand seals. Ten long minutes later, a soft glow had surrounded Naruto until it glowed brighter and in a light that would make his father proud, he vanished from the spot.

A young hero had gone on to save his and others loved ones from a cruel fate. None of them wished this tragedy on anyone, and they sure didn't want to go through it once again. The group that lay, now, on the floor wished their Hokage luck.

"Goodbye and luck, Namikaze Uzumaki Naruto," whispered a young woman before she too collapsed in a heap on the floor next to her friends.

Chapter Two.

Jigyaku no Jutsu= Time Reversal Jutsu
Hiraishin no Jutsu

"You are a failure, and fate has chosen that you will lose this match." Neji announced to a Naruto that didn't have the knowledge and skills that of the future, but it was going to change. This Naruto was about to stand and tell the Byakugan user to shove it, when a blinding white hot pain suddenly grabbed at his core. What was happening to him? Why did he feel that he could be ripped apart any second? Meanwhile, seeing a fallen Naruto, Neji made his choice and chose to attack a weak Naruto. Every person of the Rookie Nine held their breath wondering if Naruto was going to be okay, and hoping he came out of this alive.

Suddenly, a bright, red flash engulfed Naruto, and the next second he was replaced with a certain Fourth Hokage look alike. Everyone who had been in the Third Great Shinobi World War, would think this man would be his copy or clone, but the thing about this man was that his appearance was that of a 19 year old. All the older generation of shinobi were immediately on guard of the young blonde that still had his face hidden.

During this and by the time people had gotten a good look at the stranger, they noticed that Neji still charged forward hell bent on taking down the blonde. Neji didn't even stand a chance. His Gentle Fist completely missed as he went to strike, the blonde had disappeared! A hand snaked out and grabbed Neji's hand proceeded to take him down and soon Neji's arm was behind his back in a tight bind. The man hit the one blind spot in the Byakugan and knocked him unconscious. The stranger then laid Neji carefully on the ground.

'Neji...you were a good friend. I have missed you.' thought the man as he stroked Neji's long brown hair. Getting up from his crouch, the man looked up and the people, few fainted while other couldn't believe their eyes. He looked just like Minato, but there were whisker marks on his face just like their favorite prankster. The man took a step and the next second was surrounded by Maito Gai, Iruka, Asuma, Kurenai and even a few ANBU members, all but, the one man that the blonde truely wanted to see.

"Who are you and what have you done with Naruto? Anwser!" growled out Asuma . Now that they were all closer, they all took in a good look at the stranger in their home. He wore black shinobi sandles and pants, while his shirt was partly bound to his chest in a protective manner. There was burn tape that surrounded his arms and a jounin vest that hung from his shoulders. His blonde hair was tussled on top of his head, not as unruly as his younger counterpart that used to be him.

All this while the stranger looked on, drowning in all the familiar faces before him, most of which had died in his time. Tears began to form at the corners of his eyes as he looked into the faces of all his old friends, up in the stands and on the ground. He had heard the question, but now that he had made it safely back through time, he was just too tired to comprehend anything anymore than the few minutes that he arrived.

"Q-questions....later...I..friend..my.home.." Those words were all he could manage before he collapsed head first towards the ground, but not before Iruka had caught him. Iruka didn't know why he lifted the blonde stranger into his arms, but he had a feeling that this one wasn't dangerous in the way they seemed to believe.

SCENE CHANGE

Numerous eyes looked down at the man trying to figure out if he was a danger, and don't get them wrong they had taken necessary precautions to withhold the Minato look alike. They had tied his arms to the bed that he resided in, making sure the stranger would answer their much needed questions.

"What are we supposed to do with him Sarutobi-sama?" asked Kurenai.

"Well, first we just have to wait for him to wake of course, then we'll ask him questions as to where young Naruto went, and why he is here in the first place." replied Hiruzen. The old Hokage wasn't very fond of people appearing out of no where that could be a potential threat, and his all but blood grandson was no where to be found. All jounins had been out all night and day searching for their blonde idiot.

All of the current sensei's heads turned towards their leader. "Why does he look so much like the Fourth, but also resemble Naruto in the same sense?" one of them asked. That was one question that was on all of their minds.

"I don't know, and as far as I can tell, I have never seen this young man before." Sarutobi said a little dejected at having one big problem after another.

The Sand and all the other neighboring villages had all left, seeing as this predicament had come into play. The Sand wasn't happy and Sarutobi apologized many times, saying that the could probably have another final round a couple months from now. That saying, Gaara was eager, but even he could tell that this was not the time for himself and they weren't going to get anything by continuing the stay in the Hokage's hospitality.

FLASHBACK NO JUTSU!

"I apologize for the timing that has occurred, it seems that we will have to delay the final round of the Chunin exams. As you saw at the arena, it seems as a great deal of confussion was caused." The Hokage said with regret laced in his voice. Other the other hand, the Kazekage in disguise was livid, Orochimaru didn't want to wait! It was time for the old man to finally die, and now that he was close enough, his plan wasn't fool proof because of all the elite ninja that surrounded him at the moment. Orochimaru vowed to come back the next chance he got to destroy the old coot.

"I also think that we should wait, and I hope you find out what has become of the little blonde one. With this extra time, our shinobi will be even more powerful next time they meet. It will be a great battle." The Kazekage bowed, and turned towards the door.

"Come along, Gaara, Konkuro, Temari."

Gaara stood a little towards the back of the room, and in a second he walked a little ways towards the door. "I hope to see Naruto Uzumaki again." With a vague response, Gaara was on his way, way back to his 'home' with his brother and sister not far behind.

The Hokage gave a great sigh and settled down into his seat and hoped for a better confrontation next time. Sarutobi sat there, in his chair, truly grateful.

FLASHBACK~ KAI!

Eyes fluttered. Where was he? Naruto tried to open his eyes, but not sure if he really wanted to. Maybe it was better this way. The blonde wouldn't wake up, he would be stuck in a beautiful dream or hellish nightmare, destined to dream about his life. A life that he wished he could have lived over, one he wished to change.

Naruto took a deep breath, and smelled something odd. Antiseptic and antibiotics. Had he gotten hurt and gone into a coma or something? Blue orbs opened slowly and cautiously, aware of people in the room where he lay in a hospital bed. 'I've been here too many times not to be used to the smell and feel of a hospital.' Naruto thought. He listened to the noise around him, and sensed shinobi's watching his every move. If they wanted to really interrogate him, they should have strapped his down or something more heavy duty. He wasn't a Hokage for nothing.

Chapter One:: Revised and Rewritten

A grieving Hokage must always put his village's happiness first before his own. It was his way, he felt pain even when there no need for him to. After all these years, didn't he deserve to be happy too? Well, he had been, at least for a little while. Love and the lover himself had been ripped from Naruto's hands in an instant, and now Sasuke was the only one he could talk normally with.

As it was, Naruto turned swiftly in battle catching an enemy shinobi on the side of the neck. He died instantly. Being the Hokage also meant he was merciless in battle while making commands to fellow shinobi. On each side of him fought ANBU, his own personal guard, and now he signaled them to search the remaining area of Konohagakure. This small part of the village by the Hokage Tower was the only thing left. Everything else had been destroyed. Though Naruto was never a downer nor did he usually give up, life had often come to have no meaning after Kakashi died.

Being the late shinobi he was, Naruto had given the copy-nin false information about a meeting to allow Kakashi to arrive on time for once. It had worked, but at a price. When Kakashi had actually arrived a few minutes earlier than scheduled time, he was also caught in an ambush meant for the Hokage and his fellow advisers. He died by taking a kunai to the chest and being mauled to death by the enemy summons. The noble Kakashi had died protecting Naruto, his lover, his Hokage. Along with Kakashi; Anko, the Nara Clan Head and his son Shikamaru had also perished during the attack. Naruto had not only lost a lover but also his strongest strategist that had the war plans on his shoulders.

The blonde only suffered minor injuries.

As for the enemy shinobi, they didn't even have a chance. Naruto didn't hesitate to rip them to shreds, he'd been covered in not only the shinobi's blood but Kakashi's as well.

"Teme." When all the other ANBU had left, one leader took their place to guard. Sasuke had made ANBU captain after a couple of years under a chakra suppression seal and two extra years being a regular Jounin. Sasuke had always been by his friends side since the day he was returned home. The raven haired man didn't answer the jibe, he would have normally jumped at the chance of normalcy. They were on business terms and in the middle of battle so little things like memorable actions would have to wait. Naruto bowed his head and then his head snapped up in one quick motion, "We can't go on like this for much longer. This has to stop."

Sasuke stayed silent, he knew this also. Konoha was dying and everything they did seemed to fail them in the end. They weren't giving up, but they needed to do something different from what they were currently. An eyebrow rose just slightly as if to ask, "What now dope?" , they needed a plan and Hokage be damned if he just sit here. Even if they just needed to survive to the next day, Naruto was going to be the one to survive. To rebuild Konoha after this war, Sasuke was going to make sure of it. Sasuke wasn't about to let Naruto, his Hokage, die if it was the last thing he ever accomplished in this life.

"You're not going to like this, but I fear it is the only way now though." Sasuke's eyes snapped up the meet Naruto's at the announcement, they narrowed in suspicion. "What are you going to do Naruto? You're planning something stupid, I can tell." The Hokage rolled his eyes but didn't protest. He was right of course, it was stupid and foolish and utterly risky, but that was exactly the reason he was going to do it.

"I'm not going to tell you yet."

Sasuke growled and looked away from his Hokage. "You are still a fool Naruto."

"Tch, funny enough coming from you."

Every once in a while when Naruto was tired and irritable did he mention Sasuke's defection from Konoha, it was careless of him. Sasuke regretted it deeply, but after time they both let it fall to the back of their minds. Most of the other had as well. He'd proved himself repeatedly though out the years.

"Tell me when Naruto. I just need to know that." For safety reasons, and the fact that Sasuke hated going into something unprepared.

Naruto sighed. "Tomorrow Sasuke, this plan will take place tomorrow morning. The importance of that mission relies on if we can make it till morning, things are getting worse each hour." No rest for his shinobi it seemed, no rest for anyone. At the moment, they were both crouched on the edge of a roof, a medium sized house, as to not draw so much attention. One by one, his ANBU reported back to him one way or another of whether survivors were among the ruins. Like the rest of Konoha, the one around them was collapsed and barely standing. The one they were on currently had kept sturdy during the war, save for broken windows and tiles missing from the roof.

"Tomorr- Dammit Naruto!"

"Sasuke. If I asked you to go somewhere with me, even if you might never make it back, would you?" Naruto's voice was barely above a whisper.

What was he getting at? Sasuke let his Sharingan look into blue azure eyes, there was no doubt, no hesitation in them. "Yes, of course I would Naruto." With that, he hoped that Naruto would stop worrying about something so trivial and with unheeded doubt. Naruto may not have told him about his plan but that didn't mean he didn't still trust him. Sasuke would trust whatever the blonde was planning, reckless and stupid he was no longer. He had thought they were over this a long time ago.

--------------------------------------------------------------

They had tried rebuilding Konoha once, it had only gotten knocked down again and so this time it had been rebuilt only to furnish what they need. Tents and make shift houses had become their homes, every one had learned to move at a moments notice less you wanted to be flattened. Naruto walked among them now, civilian and shinobi alike watched his coat float behind him. He gave water and food to those in desperate need of it. He considered himself one of them, their equal or leader when they needed him to be. They asked him the usual daily questions, but the subject never got too heavy. They knew the reality of their situation by now.

"Hokage-sama!" "Namikaze-sama!" "Hokage-sama!"

The civilians of Konohagakure called out to him, congratulated him, praised him.

He waved but only stopped to talk to a few, his real attention was on Sakura's medical tent this time. Sakura had taken over Tsunade's position of medical chief after she had perished a couple of years ago. He lifted the flap to see Sakura walked between the injured, calmly administrating medical treatment as needed. It was currently a calm time after so long, a much needed break from the war raging on. "How are they Sakura?"

She didn't look up from bandaging a shinobi's bicep and around the torso. "Fairly well considering. No life-threatening injuries today thankfully, though there are one or two that I fear won't last the night." Sakura tilted her head towards some patients on the right side, clearly the terminally ill. And so he sat with them, talked with them, and let them know that they were the reason the village and the will of fire still burned bright.

In the end, Sakura was sorry to be right and none of them made it through the night. Just a few more lost to the night.

--------------------------------------------

The next morning had the remaining members of the Rookie Nine in a bottom room of the Hokage Tower and after several months of planning, and with several dead friends along the way, they had finally made it to this point. Shikamaru, the not-so-lazy-anymore b*****d, stood at Naruto's shoulder as the rest gathered around them. Naruto took a deep breath and turned around, looking at each of them, memorizing as they looked now. In this war torn village, he vowed to never let his friends get this haunted again.

The Hokage closed his eyes and called to Kurama, 'Hey, you finally wake up Furball? Have a nice nap?' He got a loud rumble through his mind for the effort and a rush of comforting chakra to surround him. Kurama had slowly been gathering the necessary energy to pull off this great feat and so Naruto hadn't been able to feel his friends chakra for almost six months. It started out as a back up plan just in case Naruto needed the extra boost, but then this plan came to be and so total concentration became necessary. He turned to them. "Okay, listen up," he met their eyes as he spoke, "This isn't really goodbye but, uh, 'see you later'. We will fix this. We will save our Konoha, and lead the lives we should have had." His eyes closed. "I won't forget this, you, how you are right this moment... Thank you."
