User Image It had occurred to Lungaia, sometime in the night, that if she were to continue wandering about with Gaspard at her heels, she would need to find a more stable lifestyle.

She didn't need it, certainly. She was plenty pleased to live in isolation, to wander the wilderness and feed her dark hunger when it struck. She had never been in a pack in her life, and she had no particular need for one now.

But...Gaspard did. As socially inept as he was, as weak and useless as he was, he needed more stability than she could provide him. What if someone were to come upon him, while she was out hunting? What if he wandered away and got lost somewhere, unable to keep up with her pace?

As much as she despised it, she had taken responsibility for the wolf's life, and she could hardly abandon him now. She was a wolf of word, of honor, and she owed it to him to find a stable life for them both.

For them both. Hah. As though he were her child.

That was how she thought of him, really. Certainly her feelings for the rainbow-hued wolf were not romantic. Lungaia felt herself incapable of such softness. But a child, perhaps, weak and ignorant to the ways of the world, in need of protection.

Clearly, spending so much time caring for her brain-addled father had left a long-lasting effect upon her.

The dark-pelted wolf paused, sniffing the air, brow furrowed. Her ribbony shreds of ears lay back against her skull and she shifted upon her paws. She smelled wolf. That was a good sign. Perhaps she was making her way toward civilization, after all....

Things in the pack were...well they were far from perfect. Varia lived for perfection, she expected it to come from not only herself but others as well. So what if she pushed the Sister hard in their training? What kind of warriors would they be if they never trained or if she went easy on them all the time? Well simply put they would be dead warriors if real battle every reached them. A real battle is what Varia had been itching for for quite some time. Sparring matches with vastly untrained Sisters were just not doing it for her. And even that some what recent fight with Achilles had not quenched her lust for blood and victory.

Well if the sister weren't going to provide a fight for her then she would go looking for one. Of course there weren't many wolves around their part that weren't a part of it and she sadly could not go picking a fight with any of the member in YMCA, much as she would have loved to kick some of those males asses down there. So further from the border she would need to go.

Padding silently through the dense forest Varia's ears swiveled for any sounds of wolves, as most did not have the finesse of walking silently like she and several of the sisters could. And as luck would have it, it did not take long for her to run come across another wolf. Spotted the dark colored female through the trees Varia determined in a single glance that she was not part of Antianeira, and with the small number of females in YMCA she doubted the female belonged to that pack as well.

"You tread near dangerous grounds." Varia's voice called out to the other female. The thought of inviting the female into her pack didn't exactly cross her mind, there was enough weak new blood in there that adding another was not an option. However, if this female proved herself to be worthy of such an invitation then Varia may well extend an invitation.

A tattered ear flicked and the dark-furred wolf paused, eyes narrowing. Muscles shifted beneath her thick coat, and she ducked into a shadow, re-orienting herself toward the sound of a voice. She preferred to hunt under the cover of darkness, but if a fight were to approach her during the day, she would not walk away from it.

Lungaia never walked away from a fight.

"Is that so?"
She called, seeking out the voice. She caught a whiff, a hint of the other's scent, and locked upon it like a shark. She crouched, muscles tensed, and waited.

Other wolves, perhaps, were made uneasy or even fearful at the threat of a fight with a stranger. Lungaia looked forward to it with the relish of a child approaching their birthday.

Well, someone who doesn't balk at the first sign of danger. Varia was...well she wasn't impressed, for it was hard to impress her, but she was close to impressed. Though not running away from danger was only one thing, and Varia wondered if this female would be able to hold her own in a fight - a real one. Well...she would find out soon enough if all went well, and if not, well once less worthless lump of wolf that she would need to deal with. Varia was after all extremely annoyed with the lack of good warrior material in the pack, so letting another even near the territory was not going to happen.

Slipping out from her concealing spot in the forest Varia got her first good look at the other, as did Lungaia get a good look at Varia. Her eyes moved over the female critically, taking in the tattered ears and an overall decent looking muscular body. But looks could be deceiving, perhaps this one only had muscles from running away all the time.

With her inspection complete Varia sneered at the other female. "So are you a fighter or a runner?" She was toying with the female a bit, though she wanted to go straight for the fight sometimes Varia enjoyed playing with her prey first. See if she could make them twitch before moving to action. Though the twitches in her own muscle spoke of how badly she wished to fight and it took a lot of restraint to hold herself back.

She slipped into view, standing her ground with a calm, placid air. Her nose twitched as she inhaled the scent of the other, her tattered ears flicking forward in ribbony shreds just once before sweeping back flat to her skull where they preferred to stay. The other was lean and muscular, she noted. Powerful. Strong-willed.

And violent. Thirsty, for blood, and for life. Lungaia could feel it radiating from her, that unquenchable desire -- a desire she too felt. Though perhaps Varia -- driven always to perfection -- exhibited her desires differently. Lungaia simply relished the joy of a fight, a habit drilled into her from a life among cold-blooded killers.

"Come see for yourself," she replied, coolly, to the other's taunt. Her muscles tensed, reflexively, ready for the fight, but she would not make the first move. No -- she would not attack a strange wolf on strange ground, not one so well-groomed as this. She clearly belonged to a pack, and the last thing Lungaia needed was a pack bearing down on her for attacking a member while trespassing on their grounds.

But self-defense, well...who could fault a wolf for that?

"If you insist." Varia sneered at the other. Oh yes, she would enjoy this very much. Peeling her lips back into a snarl Varia moved forward a couple of steps. "Last chance to run away before you get hurt." She waited about half a second after saying that before lunging forward. Teeth and claws that had been wanting to tear into flesh for some time were at the ready. Teeth snapped towards Lungaia's closest shoulder, hoping to tear that damn thing right open.

As for her claws, well her right paw went for the face. To be more specific the eyes. A blind opponent was a dead opponent. And on the slight chance one survived the flight but lost the eye then they had a severe handicap to deal with and sooner or later their life would end - preferably by someone else instead of old age. Meanwhile her left paw went for the side of the neck, a deep enough wound there and you're a goner. Not the epic warriors death one should have but as far as Varia knew this wolf was far from a warrior.

Of course that opinion could change based upon the outcome of this fight.

She attacked with warning, she had the time to think. How noble.

She moved quickly, smoothly, like a cobra -- moving so fast it was hard to tell if she had moved at all. She slid sideways, sidestepping both the slash at her eye and the lunge for her shoulder. She turned her head, taking advantage of Varia's extended paws to aim a bite at the tender under-flesh of her elbow, where it connected to the body.

The movement happened so quickly -- sidestep, duck, snap, sidle -- that the paw aimed for her throat slid down her shoulder instead and she found herself whirling around to stand alongside the other wolf, thrusting her hips into the other wolf's side, seeking to unseat her from her paws.

Well now, this would be better than she had first expected. This wolf had some potential after all, or so it appeared, and so Varia was almost impressed once again. Then again, things could change in a heartbeat, so she didn't keep her hopes up. The fact that Lungaia was fast didn't mean much if she couldn't hold her own in a fight. All would be revealed soon enough.

Catching movement from the corner of her eye Varia had only a spilt second to move her leg. Even so she felt teeth dig into her flesh as she pulled it away. A minor scratch. She had fought through much worse countless times. Pulling her leg all the way back now Varia let out a growl as her opponent ended up beside her. Dodging and quick movements could only save her for so long, a true fighter used their teeth and claws as well.

The hip check was a bit pathetic, Varia was solid muscle and knew practically every move out there so a simple weight pushing maneuver like that wasn't going to cut it. Legs were rigid as the other pushed but really there wasn't much she needed to do to counter the movement. "Perhaps you can try harder" She let out in a growl and then quickly ducked her head, snapping at the others forelegs. The back leg that was closest to Lungaia she kicked out with, in an attempt to either break her leg or simply throw her off balance. Really she herself should have been putting move of an effort into the fight but he was only getting warmed up and part of her wanted to see just what this wolf could do before ripping her to shreds.

"Try harder?" She scoffed, her eyes glimmering in amusement.

She wasted no breath on saying anymore, however, as there was hardly time to deflect the next attack. She expected the kick, and lifted her leg in time for the blow to, once more, barely brush her fur as she withdrew the limb from the line of danger. She whirled her haunches around, coiling her forequarters, and as Varia's head lowered to go for Lungaia's foreleg, she lunged, snapping at the other wolf's exposed neck.

It had been a long, long while since Lungaia had truly fought and formidable opponent. She hunted, sure -- hunted to terrify, and sometimes to kill. But rarely did she meet an equal, and so often she had to hold back, rein in her desire to destroy.

Though the movements were a bit slow Varia could certainly see that this wolf was no stranger to fighting. It had just been some time since a real challenge had been presented, and Varia was certainly a challenge. Her kick has just barely missed, and though Lungaia moved quickly Varia's teeth still aimed for the retracted forelegs, but she had to shift her weight to avoid the bite aimed for her neck. The slight scrape of teeth rubbing against her skin could be felt, though it wasn't enough to do any real damage to her flesh, and a few tufts of hair would be lost but all in all she had avoided the hit.

As she shifted her weight, pushing it towards her opponent Varia knew that it would be a shame to kill her opponent. A skilled fighter was something they very much needed in her pack and the black and white wolf was exactly that. "That's more like it." Varia said with satisfaction now that the other seemed to be trying more. Redirecting her teeth Varia now aimed them for the joint where shoulder met neck. She also sent her front claws towards the legs, that would undoubtedly be placed within biting range if the shewolf wished to maintain her balance. However, Varia knew that all too soon she would need to call the fight to an end if only to attempt to recruit this most worthy opponent into the fold of the Sisters.

Lungaia could hear the blood pumping in her ears. Soon, it was the only thing she heard: the steady thump-thump-thump of her heart. The adrenaline surged through her body and red crept in at the corners of her vision, and the bloodlust set in full-force.

It was a dangerous game that Varia played -- dangerous, because Lungaia's heart was home to a terrible beast, a demon that welled up inside of her and consumed her from time to time. So much as she wished she could make it disappear, it followed her everywhere, lurked and waited for a chance at blood and violence.

She was not in control of her movements any longer. She moved as a creature posessed, darting and snapping like a snake. In hindsight, she would look back on this fight and remember this part only vaguely, as her brain had -- for the most part -- shut off completely.

She felt blows hit her, teeth sink into flesh or claws scrape the surface, but she did not register pain, and she didn't care about deflecting them. She could endure pain.

What she wanted to do was kill.

She struck! Teeth and claws, a dozen times over, moving with lightning speed as the demon in her heart pulled her puppet strings. She tasted blood.

Something changed in the other, and Varia was intrigued by it. She seemed to transform from a regular fighter into a blood lust driven killing machine. To be honest Varia liked it. This was what the pack needed, especially in times of war, they needed wolves that lusted to kill, lived to kill, not those who wished to live simple lives and raise their young. Now all she had to do was end this rage within the other in order to draw her into the cause. She knew well how rage could blind, she had killed dozens without so much as thinking back when the war was ripping apart the pack. It had taken much to break through to her to end her claws and teeth from tearing into more flesh.

She felt Lungaia's teeth and claws rip into her flesh, but the pain only fueled her own actions. Pain was something she trained to work through, had many times before. "Enough." She growled, though she hated to end the fight but she must, had to in order to further the packs power. "I have seen enough from you!" Varia rose her voice so that the other might hear her through the blood lust and attempted to take a few steps back.

Blood stained her splotched coat, but she stood firm. Wounds could heal, but what she needed now was to talk to this female, no longer as an enemy but as an equal and perhaps if she agreed to it, her Sister.

Somewhere, far away, someone was talking.

Her jaws snapped, but they caught empty air, and she hesitated. Stop? Enough? Why?

Deep in her thoughts, within her consciousness, the part of her that was civilized stirred awake and pushed aside the red-tinged fog that had overcome her senses. She was still on her paws, she realized. Her pelt was torn, but she wasn't mortally wounded. The other wolf was also alive, and she was talking to her, and looking at her in the most curious way...

...her tattered ears flicked and her brow furrowed. "...You fight well," she said, at length. She was a bit embarrassed to have lost herself the way she had. She hesitated, suddenly uneasy as to why the other had stopped...

It took a few moments for her opponent to break through the haze of bloodlust but when she did she returned to her former self. Whoever that former self was. They hadn't exactly shared names before going at it, but really that was a detail that didn't matter so much. In times of battle it was not necessary to know the name of an enemy before striking, that showed weakness. What good was knowing the name of the one you were to slaughter only moments later.

Giving her fur a bit of a shake Varia continued on, nodding slightly to the other. "As do you." Such a rare occurrence to run into a worthy opponent. Even her pack held far too few such warriors, which was sad to say considering they were a pack founded upon warriors. This was a wolf she could not let get away.

"Just where did you learn to fight like that?" Varia questioned the other. She was curious to find out if there was another pack such as hers training wolves to fight or if this particular female learned elsewhere. Either way she planned to recruit this female. "I have a use for well trained fighters such as yourself." She would judge this females reaction to this before fully laying out her offer. Not all wolves would join a pack, some were loners and likely doomed to fail because of that. It would be highly unfortunate if this particular wolf decided to waste such talent on nothing more than hunting for herself. Varia could offer her a greater cause, and perhaps finally start gaining the warriors they so desperately needed.

"Life," she responded, simply, and shrugged. "Survival."

Many wolves had been shaped and hardened by a difficult life. Most of these were feeble creatures, beaten down by circumstance. But a few took life head-on and fought back, and Lungaia was that sort of wolf.

Also, it helped that she had been the daughter of a sadistic murderer. But she wouldn't bring that up. Not now, and not ever.

Her eyes shone as she looked back into Varia's. "A use? Use for what?"

Lungaia had never been in a pack, although she knew a thing or two about them. In her experience though, wolves weren't generally recruited based on their bouts of insatiable bloodlust. Perhaps this patched female had something else in mind. A hit, perhaps? Lungaia could be a contract killer she supposed....depending on who she was killing.
