By now I am sure everyone has heard of the tragedy that has befallen Japan with an 8.9 earthquake and then a Tsunami that wiped out a whole village and even hit California state.

It has made me realize how fragile we are as humans no matter how far we have advanced.
My prayers will be going out to Japan.

I made this thread because Lyx is doing something for the relief of Japan and it made me notice that there are many Gaians helping or even suffering, so please consider this a thread not only a discussion but a place to seek comfort or post ideas for other ways of helping.

I'm off to the track now! One friend I've had since 1996 lives in Saitama prefecture, and her mother lives 100 miles inland in Iwate (where the coastal communities were devastated. My god-father is Canadian Japanese. My first boyfriend was Japanese.

I guess it's pretty personal.

See you soon!

At first I was angry with that girl. But now I've had time to think, and I can only think she is a very ignorant girl, and can't possible understand what has happened. If she really "got it" she wouldn't have said those things.
I think people reacting in a way that informs her that her actions are offensive, and provides her with better information about the Japanese, and their situation, may offer her a chance to improve her outlook. But there will always be some people who have been blinded with hate, early on, and don't have the faculties to get past that.

I have found an interesting site, it offers live tweets from all over Japan, and they pop up on a Google map. Many are in English.

Yeah it was. xd
For me it is not so much looking at the positives but accepting the fact that what happened was sad, unfortunate and a lesson that humans cannot stop mother nature, no matter how much we try to.
In saying that my outlook on this is, "Okay, something bad has happened but what can we do to make it better?" I think that is what makes a dark moment in the world have silver lining and thus adds a positive.
yay~

Would you post that link? I am curious!
I never watched the video because she is a disgrace. Maybe you are right Lyx and I agree with what you`ve said about her but I know I will get angry with her so I refuse to watch the video.
Someone told me she is Christian and I got so upset with the fact that there is another crazy Christian in the news.
In a lighter point of view: "Why is it always the crazy Christians?!"

Haha, a dirty secret revealed, I read PerezHilton. It's not the most credible news source, but here is a follow-up story for that UCLA girl. I suspected she came from such an environment, where parents teach hatred.

Akihabara:360 - This is the electronics district, lots of shopping, and more brightly lit than Times Square:

Before the Earthquake:

After the Earthquake (to conserve power):

About the girl - I just kind of want to laugh at her.
Then I feel sorry for her.
I know what it feels like to be an outcast for your words it has happened to me and it is a very frightening and lonely experience.
To make it worse she is being sent threats, her actions were inexcusable but the people who are retaliating against her are just making everything worse. As for her father, I think he was trying to get her into trouble, to me she strikes me as a playful and ignorant girl and I personally believe the blog idea was simply a joke. Even if it was without taste.

I hope she will be able to live in peace once more and they she does a lot of soul searching and finds forgiveness in herself and towards the Asian culture that she was so quick to poke fun at. I honestly wish her the best and that she grows from this experience. 3nodding

However the death threats should end. That is just as inexcusable.

Electronics district - That is just amazing. The huge night and day difference is unbelievable! I support them trying to conserve their power. I know it is an adjustment but really it also helps the Earth.

Between Google translate, and my limited understanding of Japanese, I am able to read some news, each day, from Japan. The saddest story was a mother of 2 young girls, who had always nagged her husband for a present, and told him he had no romance. When she went home, after the tsunami, she found a pile of things he had left by the door, before going out on a few business calls (he hasn't returned since) and found among them a pretty diamond ring that he had bought to surprise her on White Day. She is in a shelter now, with her two baby girls, and would rather have her husband with her.

Today's story was a man, who every morning would text his wife, and she would text him back: have a nice day. I'll see you tonight. He cannot find her, now, and has put a message on his mobile: "Good morning, where are you? I will be waiting." He has had people looking through shelters, and all over the place where they lived. Many people are displaced in Eastern Japan, now, some have been moved to shelters in other prefectures. It is getting harder and harder to find people, and so many remain missing.

No, neither spouse has been found. It was rare for anyone in the direct line of the flood to survive. The waves were too powerful.

One amazing story though, a dolphin was found 2Km inland, and the rescue workers wrapped it in wet towels to get it back to the ocean.
