Beep beep beep...whrrrrrr...

The clicks, whirs, and other assorted sounds of the machinery that kept Audrey Collins on life support while her body recovered from the mysterious and terrifying trauma had become white noise to everyone who spent time with her. At first it had probably been surreal and irritating but after two weeks it was just part of the atmosphere of the hospital.

Audrey hated hospitals.

Even when almost all of her friends, Hell even her parents had been in a coma, the bluenette had spent as little time as possible in the whitewashed halls of Destiny City Memorial Hospital. The smells, the sounds, all intolerable to the little girl who had visited her mommy one too many times in the sterile rooms. Now it was mommy's turn to visit her, as well as a slew of other visitors. One visitor had become part of the atmosphere itself as well in the form of Elzo Xanis, who had adamantly refused to leave his Audrey's side.

Aree was almost as regular and Jada Chamberlyn came by as often as possible. The room was bursting with flowers, with color, all the cheerfulness that were more for the bereaved than for the unmoving, petite form in the large hospital bed.

Once her heartbeat had spiked erratically when Tanz had gripped her and tried to funnel the energy of a senshi's life into Audrey. The EKG the next morning had everyone hopeful, jubilant, everyone but Aree Cadence. It had failed, and horribly.

But now there was hope.

Fingers were moving on the bed and had clenched into the sheets. Audrey Collins was waking up.

In the corner of the room, sitting in a chair far too itchy to even be considered as comfortable, Elzo had fallen into routine. Paper work, making phone calls, dealing with overseas management in broken languages he never used since he'd taken the classes for them. His office had moved from the hotel to hospital, and so long as the work was done, no one could complain. It however took it's toll on him. Each day he'd take a few moments to pause his work and just walk over. Kiss her hand, tell her he loved her, before returning to his work. If he let himself linger too long with her soft hand in his he knew his feeling and sorrow would wash over him, and he'd be unable to work at all. So it was just a brief moment, a soft kiss, and a little whisper.

Setting the book down, Elzo felt an odd need for the little moment again, that time he just had to remind her he was still there. Still by her side, still waiting. The first thing he noticed as he went over was softness of her sleep seemed to have changed. it was like something under her skin had shifted. Like muscles were moving across her delicate features. His brow furrowed. The second change was her hand. Once soft and limp was now tense, gripping bedsheets. "Audrey?" Her fingers moved. Lips moved if just a hair.

She was reacting.

"Audrey?" He wanted to think it was real. How many times had he dreamed of her waking up, only to find reality hadn't changed? But another twitch at her name. This was real. "Audrey! Audrey! Oh god baby please-" His shouting got the nurses's attention. She knew sometimes people would falsely assume that the patient was waking up but looking at the sudden changes on the monitor, she called for the doctor.

Elzo just sat, praying that this wasn't a dream.
Praying that she was coming back.

This time, for good.

The beeps were steadier and there was a backing up in the ventilator as Audrey tried to breathe on her own. It was that choking sensation that finally had eyes shooting wide open before almost immediately drooping again from the fact that one, they'd not been open in quite some time and were unused to the light and two, she was still so very tired.

Almost instantly the nurse was there with an involuntary smile and a patient instruction. "Audrey, squeeze my hand if you can hear me." The fingers had been untangled from the sheets and taken into the nurse's, gripping now solidly for a squeeze. "Good girl. You've been asleep for a bit and we put a tube down your throat to help you breathe while you slept. We're going to check up on you and take it out. Lay still for a few minutes sweetie." It would have been miraculous, had everyone not been rooting for her.

Audrey Collins was young, healthy, and from the looks of all the gifts and the people drifting in and out every day, had everything to live for. Tears welled and dripped down the corners of her face as the tube was pulled and water administered through a straw to wet her throat. Eyes, narrowed with morphine and a dull gold from sleep, looked around the room and latched on to Elzo.

"Elzo?" It was a whisper because she couldn't manage any more, but she had to know. She had to be sure that this wasn't just a dream. Had she really survived? Was she alive?

Or was this just another limbo trick?

He was there. He was there as the nurses came and went, doctors were called, and he was there as he saw the honey brown eyes open for the first time in what seemed like forever. He had promised himself he wouldn't cry. But he wanted to. Oh how he wanted to. She was walking up. She was responding. This wasn't some dream, this was reality. He had to hold back. He wanted to just pick her up, hold her, kiss her, shower her in all the adoration and love he had. She was returning to them. She was returning to him.

Yet the moment she said his name, his control broke. He had to be by her side. The nurse just smiled as she took the last bits of data and did a few more scans. But for Elzo the nurse was miles away. Audrey's hand was pulled into his and he took his time, kissing each finger. The palm of her hand. Her lips to far, he didn't think if he kissed her the doctors would have approved, much less let him. "I'm here." He had promised himself he would not cry. But hearing her voice again, seeing her eyes open, left returning to her- His vision went blurry.
"I'm right here."

She couldn't move. That was the worst part and the pain that tore through her midsection exactly where she remembered....something? slipping into her body were just what Audrey needed to convince herself she was really alive. Arms tried to reach up and throw themselves around Elzo but couldn't move and had her only crying out involuntarily in pain, then again in frustration; it was a rusty, hoarse sound and she gestured for the water.

Without releasing her hand, or even letting it go far from where he was holding it against his lips, Elzo held the water up again for her. He seemed unwilling to let anyone get closer to Audrey than himself, even when the doctors were absolutely necessary to make sure she was doing alright. "Wha...what happened to me?" Eyes widened as the teen realized something.

She had no idea why she was here. She knew that she was happy to be alive and she was nearly dead and in limbo. But why? Why did she hurt? Why was she here? What had happened? The pain was easy to recall when it was still throbbing and the fear, and then all the blood. But why and who and where?

"Where is everyone? I missed you." More than he would ever know. Fingers closed on Elzo's and tried to pull him closer, doctor's be damned. Audrey had just come back from the dead and she wanted to kiss him!

"Shusshhh" Elzo was so damn happy. Normally at this level of joy he'd be jumping and dancing but this joy was...gentler. Calmer. No matter how she would have stomped her foot or yelled in the past, Elzo had seen her in the last weeks at her weakest. She was the tiny fragile love of his life and he'd almost lost her to the unkown. It terrified him, and now as she cried out, he only wanted to be gentle. Ease any pains she had, and lingering hurt. "They don't know, you just..showed up. Bloody and wounded. Doctors are probably calling your folks right now, I-"

Bending over her, Elzo kissed her forehead, not tempting himself with her lips. To much passion, to much emotion.

"I've been here. Waiting. I wanted to be here for when you woke up." Another kiss to her hand. So small in his own. "I couldn't leave you here. I couldn't lose you." It would be a while before she'd be out, but he'd still be there. "God, I love you Audrey. You had me so scared. Did someone attack you? I just-"

"Just showed up? I don't...I don't remember any of that. Elzo." Eyes were a little wild now and her voice was cracking with panic. "I don't know what happened!" There was a little whimper as Audrey quieted herself and tried to push the blankets aside. "Help me. Please. I need to see. Maybe that will help." Her hand could barely lift on its own let alone drag at the blankets that felt like they weighed a hundred pounds on her now-gaunt frame.

Aree would have laughed at her to see her now. Audrey had always prided herself on the fact that she'd been able to keep a fairly pudge-free figure even through all of the junk she threw into her body. Now? Now she was little more than skin and bones for all that they had pumped her full of nutrients. The two generals had more in common now than ever.

Both had now died and come back. Her only miracle was that Queen Beryl had made no appearance in the limbo prison of her own mind. Thoughts whirled, wondered what she had missed, what about Elysion? But it all paled and quieted as the blankets were moved and she dragged the gown up over her hips to stare in horror first at her body, and then yanking it back down again with a light cry of pain, dissolving into sobs.

"I'm ugly. I'm sorry Elzo. I'm sorry."
PostPosted: Mon Mar 14, 2011 4:14 pm

The fact she showed panic got him on alert. Something was wrong and she was reacting badly. His need to care for her, to hold her, consumed him. The nurses all but ran as the heart rate monitor let out jarring beeps. But Elzo got to her first. Lips found her own and he gently guided her body back to it's resting position. "Don't move so fast, you'll hurt yourself like that" His kisses broke up his words as his free hand rested on her hip. "You've been asleep for over a week. And don't lie to me." A kiss to her nose. "You're not ugly. Never ugly. You're Audrey. My amazing Audrey. And if you're so worried with how you look, don't worry, I'll have Marlo make you your favorite dinner. Or once the doc says you can go we'll eat out. I'll even let you pick the place. You can invite anyone you want." He kept kissing her, brushing his hands on her's, their fingers entwined.

Then as softly as he could, he got himself on the bed next to her, the nurse tell him not to be damned. He wanted to hold her, love her. Show her nothing had changed. His heart had never changed.

It was an undeniable fact that she always needed someone to lean against. Vicky, Aree, and Elzo were the main three and when warm arms came around her and lips met softly the panic receded somewhat. Everything would present itself when Aree showed up, and if nobody called her Audrey would do it. Aree was, without fail, the one least likely to hold back information 'for your health'. Her voice was so soft as weak with emotion and the shock of waking up, Audrey's petite body curled into his larger one. She'd never really noticed before how much larger he was than her.

Now it was hard not to be grateful for it as her head rested against his shoulder and her eyes looked up into his with the utmost love. "I love you Elzo. You're really crazy but that's why I love you. You know where I'd go for dinner....Shufflepuck. Mmm, I can almost taste them." Except her stomach was cramped and rolling with nausea from pain and the fact that her body looked like a warzone.

Eyes were caught by the daisies and a smile tugged at her lips before getting wider and wider seeing all the bunches of them on every surface, lingering and holding at the pile of work and what looked like a week's worth of clothing.

"Elzo....did you go home? At all?!" She had forgotten how hard it had been to get him out of the hospital when Marlo was asleep. Eyes came back to his and she held his gaze with some of that stern adorability that had originally caught at his heart. "Don't lie to me. I will kick your butt." While lying prone and unable to even push blankets off of her.

Fierce Linarite, brought low. Somehow. Morbidity was shaken off as she looked up for an answer. He wasn't getting out of this one!

As she glared, he chuckled, wiggling as close as he could. "Nope. I never did." Playfully he poked her forehead. "Dummy, I had to every few days, but, no mostly I was here. Marlo brought me my work and I packed sets of clothes. They have showers and all the stuff here for residents I just wanted to stay here." Eyes closed as fingers started running down tangled blue hair, fussing gently. "You scared me. I thought I lost you."

There was truth in his voice, the way he was more gentle with her, the simple way he was looking at her. He'd been worried but never so badly before, never worried like that before. He'd just never had reason too and now that he did- "You're my everything. I love you Audrey." A sigh and blue eyes opened. "When you get to come home, I promise. A dozen rolls. Maybe more. We'll go to the beach, just the two of us." propping up with an elbow he smirked. "Think your doctor will let me feed you some rolls later? Not sure how they want to get you going, but don't worry, once you're given the clear and can eat I'm sure you'll be normal in no time.Who knows, maybe the rolls will have some magic in you to help you heal. Dunno if my kisses or talking did." There it was, that soft smile. "Did you dream?"

Dreams. Had that Limbo place been only a dream? Everything was so jumbled in Audrey's mind and she rubbed at her temples while trying to think. It would be so lovely to just go home and be in the big blue bed, curled up in one of his shirts and her shorts with nothing to do on a lazy afternoon but play WoW. Annoy Zink. Make sure Jada didn't spend her way into bankruptcy at nineteen.

Anything but be here in this hospital with sun coming through the blinds yet not warming a single thing. "The beach sounds wonderful. I would have been really upset to have died without ever going to the beach with you." Some of the panic returned and with it came a sense of horrible guilt. She'd known somewhere in her mind that one day this would happen. "I'm so sorry Elzo. So sorry baby." Her forehead pressed lightly against his.

He didn't deserve this. Didn't deserve to live in a hospital room watching a vegetable. Granted it was the king of all hospital rooms and she wasn't asleep anymore but....what was she doing? There was no way she was idly attacked by a normal human! Fingers touched her temples one more time and pressed against them.

Banish the fear. Banish the pain. Be normal Collins!

"I dreamed but it was crap because you weren't there. I was all alone in a gray world and there was no one." Tanz had been there, briefly. So briefly the bluenette wasn't entirely sure she hadn't just made that up. There'd been nothing but a brief moment and Audrey couldn't have known it was borne of magical influence.

"Sometimes I wonder if I'm still dreaming. You're too good to be true, Elzo Xanis."

He wished he could have just picked her up off the bed, wrap her in the sheets, and kidnap her to their apartment. Which to him that was now what his home was. It wasn't 'his' place. It wasn't 'his' apartment. It was their home. Their apartment. Without her there it had felt empty, dead, hollow. She filled his world, his life with that spark of life and a love he'd never known before her. Her return was his his signal, his prayers, answered. He could go home now. He could go home to wait, because now he knew she'd return. Poking her temple he grinned. "I'll head home tonight and pack then. We spend a few days at the beach, celebrate your recovery. I'll make good on all those promises." There was a terrible glint in his eye. "I'll even try to play Warcraft with you and sign up to get you that mount thingy."

Scooting around he started kissing anypart of her he could find. Fingers, arms, neck, face, anywhere and everywhere he could see and reach. "You're not alone Audrey. I'm here, I'm always here, okay? That gray world isn't our world, this is." A final kiss, tender and soft. "You're my world Aud, and if this is a dream, Let's not wake up." He sighed, relaxing next to her. "I don't think I could bear the thought of waking up alone. Waking up without you next to me."

A smile stretched across her face, pale and wan though it was. "Our world? I like that. This is our world and you're not allowed to leave it. I promise I won't if you won't. You jump I jump." The Titanic quote had her screwing up her face and making a gack noise. "Did I really just say that? Ughhh! Did they give me a lobotomy?" Humor was always good, right?

"Can't you ever keep your damn hands to yourself?" It was a little more gruff than Jason probably would have meant under different circumstances but his little baby girl had died, come back, and then stayed just out of their reach for a little over two weeks. The minute she wakes up and Elzo was all over her with his fish lips and monkey hands. It was unfair but Jason Collins had his Daddy Eyes out and trained straight and hard on the Xanis boy.

Shelley didn't even comment as weeping, she threw arms around her daughter and wept against the girl's shoulder. "Oh my little baby I am so happy you are okay! You made us worry so much, don't you ever do that again or I don't care how old you are, I'm going to lock you in your bedroom forever!" Audrey wrapped an arm around her mother as her own tears welled up and she lost composure again, sniffling and crying into her mama's soft shoulder.

Jason, without untraining Daddy Eyes from Elzo, reached down and took Audrey's hand so that he could stroke her hair while she cried. It was one of those perfect family moments, and one that she had been waiting for for years now. How ironic that it was only now when everything was falling apart that she could get something that she'd been searching for.

Everything was so goddamn upside-down.
PostPosted: Mon Mar 28, 2011 9:48 pm

He laughed. She was back. On she could make such lines work. "I will never leave you. No now, not ever. I'm be by your side for eternity." He was smiling in the goofy way, but even under it he was being honest. Hey, he'd hung around her this long hadn't he? Before Elzo could wiggle his way closer, the voice of Audrey's father rang out and reluctantly, Elzo moved from his spot, allowing her parents to smother her.
Watching them cuddle and coo and smother their daughter felt all his stress fade with a sigh. He could relax. She was back, this time for good. Nodding to her father, Elzo figured this was family time. He and Audrey had time later. They had forever after all didn't they?

Packing his things, he smiled getting ready to go home and freshen up. He wanted figured him smelling like hospital kinda sucked. And she did always like his shampoo. It would just be short trip. He fully intended to still sleep by her side, especially now that she was awake.
"I'll be back a little later. Rest up okay Audrey?" She would want some time with her family. "Mr. and Mrs. Collins, always a pleasure."

There was enough presence of mind left as she was being smothered against Shelley that Audrey lifted her head in alarm at the sound of Elzo leaving. Leaving? He couldn't leave? Didn't he just say...woah. Panic. Though amber eyes had gone wide with alarm the teen forced herself to settle back into bed and pat her mother lightly to keep her from rushing in again.

It did hurt to be smothered and crushed, she'd just been willing to momentarily endure it. "Elzo wait!" She looked at him for a long moment before dropping her eyes to the blankets, fingers tangling. Everyone was waiting for what she obviously was trying to summon the courage up to say. But what Audrey wanted to say was for his ears only.

Not her parents.

"Elzo uhm...I...I want my box off of the mantle okay?" There was only one she could mean. Looking back up, Audrey's eyes were incredibly serious and the meaning in them was clear as crystal for the man she loved. "I think I have a question to answer, don't I?" Hopefully. Please God he still wanted to marry her after all of this.

She'd realized now more than ever that life was short. She wasn't going to wait anymore to make hers as happy as possible.
