“'M I gonna get t' play wif th' puppies t'day?” Megg looked down at Shade as he posed the question and smiled, nodding as she led her son down the street. The young woman had a doctor's appointment today, and was therefore dropping the impling boy off at Kai's house. Megg was hoping that her son would stay there for maybe an hour an a half – if all went well, she'd be back to pick him up by then. There was, however, one problem with this whole thing.
Shade had grown a lot since the last time they'd seen Kai – a lot more than any regular child would. This, of course, was because Shade wasn't LIKE a normal child, but Kai didn't know about that. Today, Megg was going to try to give the young man as much of an explanation as she could without revealing too much about the whole magic thing. Was she allowed to talk about that? She wasn't magic herself, so she wasn't entirely certain if she had to follow the same rules as Zak and Nigel (not that either of them followed the rules anyway). Hopefully, it would go well. Megg only prayed that Kai wouldn't freak out too much, or worse, not want to see her again. This would be more than trippy for most people, so how COULD she explain it without telling him about the magic? Honestly, she didn't know.
Megg was still pondering that fact when they arrived at the laundromat that Kai lived above. She remembered where the stairs were in the back from when she'd brought the young man home after their first meeting, and headed straight there, leading Shade up the stairs when she came across them. “I'm gonna need to talk to Kai for a bit before I leave, so you just keep quiet for me until we're done, alright?”
“'Kay Mama!” Shade grinned up at Megg as he held her hand, standing just a bit behind the brunette as they came up to the door. His mother smiled down at him again before turning her attention to Kai's door, raising a hand to knock at it.
Hopefully, this wasn't about to blow up in her face.

As soon as she knocked, what sounded like a pack of dogs (and what was a pack of dogs) began howling, yowling, barking, yipping, and generally making a s**t ton of noise on the other side of the door. Claws could be heard scrabbling against the already scratched up door, and finally one voice boomed out. "Bloody hell, knock it off, you savages! Back! Down! Go to your BEDS!" Kai commanded, shooing and shoving the dogs away from the door. Chief, by far the most obedient, immediately recoiled now that he had let their Alpha know that someone was at the door, and pulled Patch with him. Mistress barked once more, just to let him know that it was the lady from before, and Bo herded the rest of the puppies out of the way. Kai didn't understand dog, though, so when he opened the door and saw Megg, he was pleasantly surprised.
"Oh, hey there, stranger. What brings you arou- WOAH." He cut off mid-charming greeting, and stared down at Shade. At least, he THOUGHT it was Shade. The kid had...grown, since he'd last seen him. And he'd grown a lot. He had the same messy hair, same gold eyes, black fur, tail; everything screamed that he was Shade, and yet, he couldn't have been. Shade was an infant! A baby! It wasn't...it wasn't POSSIBLE that he could have..
"Holy hell, what are you FEEDING him?" He blurted out, unable to contain his shock.

Despite her nervousness, Megg couldn't help but smile a little as she heard the commotion on the other side of the door. Was it always like this when people came over? If so, she wondered if the young man had people over often, what with how much noise the dogs made. It was kind of funny.
And then the amusement left when Kai opened the door and caught sight of Shade. Before she could respond, the little boy at her side gasped before giving Kai a disapproving look. "You sai' a bad word, Kai! You don't say thing like tha'!"
"Shade...remember what I said about letting me talk to Kai first?" God, this was going badly. She hadn't even TRIED to explain anything yet, and it was already going badly. Things would only go downhill from here, and she knew it. ******** her life. "I, um...called you a few days ago about watching him today, remember? Did you forget?" She laughed nervously and ran a hand through her hair, attempting to lighten the mood - when her attempt failed, she cleared her throat and dropped her free hand back to her side. "It's, ah...well, it's complicated." How could she explain it to him? "He's just...well, he's a little different, that's all." Really? That was the best explanation that she could come up with? That he was 'a little different'? <********> that was weak! "It's...normal for kids like him."

Stunned, confused, and feeling more than a little out of the loop, Kai stared down at the child who had accused him of saying a bad word. Who was also, it would seem, Shade. Shade, the infant, who had spontaneously grown into a toddler. ...It...really wasn't making any more sense, no matter how many times he said it in his head.
"I..uh..Yes?" He did remember talking to Megg about babysitting a short while ago. "But, uh...I...may have forgotten up until this point?" He was so confused. So very, very confused. But, he could see that this was becoming increasingly awkward; which was something he didn't want. Weird super-growing child or not, he liked Megg. She was sweet, and cute, and didn't mind his dogs.
He didn't often find that combination. In fact, he hadn't really EVER found that combination.
"Er...Why..don't you come in? If you have time, I mean. I know you mentioned an appointment, but-" He pushed the door further open, gesturing with his hand for the dogs to back up. They did, herding the puppies after them also. He scratched the back of his head, looking down at Shade. He supposed there wasn't much wrong with Shade growing so quickly. It was just...different. And surprising. But it was still Shade, and if growing quickly was the most shocking thing he ever did, Megg was pretty much set for an easy parenthood.

Well, he was taking this better than Megg thought he would have, admittedly. Kai was clearly weirded out, but at least he wasn't, well, flipping his lid. Though, she wasn't sure if the stunned silence was much better...maybe this whole thing had broken him? Oh God, she hoped not. The first person she'd gotten to hang around who wasn't magic-related in YEARS, and now she'd gone and freaked him out.
Actually, Shade was technically the one who was freaking him out, but that wasn't his fault - it was the circumstances of his creation that caused him to grow the way that he did, and he certainly couldn't help that. Maybe there was a way for Megg to make this situation less awkward though? "Oh, well...I guess I should've called you before showing up then." She couldn't think of one. "Sorry. My bad."
The brunette was surprised, but relieved, when Kai invited her inside. She'd been half-expecting for him to tell her that he was suddenly busy, but again, he was taking this pretty well. Maybe there was still hope after all. "Y-Yeah, I have a bit of time..." She gave him a small smile before slipping in past him, tucking some hair behind her ear as she turned to look at him again. "So, how've you be-"
"C'n I play with th' puppies??? Can I??" Shade's excited question cut off the one that Megg had been about to pose, and the little boy looked back and forth between the dogs and Kai. It wasn't often that he got to play with pets of any kind, since they weren't allowed to have any at the mansion - he hoped that Kai would say yes. Wide, golden eyes were clearly pleading at him.
It was rather adorable, really.

Kai was one of the few occupants of Tallenpoint that was not, in fact, privy to the knowledge of Magic's existance. He'd seen a few odd people here and there, but had simply assumed that they'd been victim of an odd birth disorder. Now, he was beginning to realize that perhaps there was more to it than met the eye. And, as he thought about it, he began to realize what a flimsy excuse that had been in the first place. When had he come up with that? When he was drunk? What Kai didn't know was that he was simply one of the many victims of the Tallenpoint Council's mind working. He had been convinced, subconsciously, that there was nothing weird about the city. And so, he had believed it. Right up until now.
Of course, even he, in his stunned state, was able to see the excitement in Shade's eyes. After a moment, he grinned at him, and chuckled. "Yes, you can." He said, gesturing over at his pack. "Just be gentle, okay?" The last comment was directed at both Shade, and the dogs. Chief's tail thudded against the floor in response, and Kai was sure that even with Shade's sudden growth spurt, the dogs would be fine. So, he turned his attention to Megg once more, eyes clearly asking for an explanation. He didn't want this swept under the rug with small talk, and quirked one eyebrow up over the other to make this clear, gesturing to Shade.
"So, steiroids? Or, what?"

"'Kay!" Megg watched as her son scurried over to the pack and couldn't help but smile at his excitement. Her attention was quickly drawn away from him however as Kai posed his question. Normally, she might have been amused by the way he'd worded it - however, this whole thing had left her feeling rather awkward. She knew that the young man wanted an explanation, but what could she tell him? He'd probably think that she was crazy if she told him the truth, but she didn't want to lie to him either.
The brunette would have had to tell him at some point, and it would be better to do it now than to try to explain later on down the line. Besides, it wasn't like she'd get in trouble for telling him – perhaps the council kept tabs on Nigel, but as far as she knew, they didn't much care about her. Probably because she was a normie, more than likely. “Well...alright, obviously...Shade's not my biological son...” In case that hadn't been obvious already. “He was...given to me, and...he wasn't made through...ah...regular means.” Maybe she should just come out with it. This was strange enough as it was, and this wasn't making it any less so. “Shade was made with...magic.” There. She'd said it. Now Kai would just have to decide whether or not he thought she was crazy. “Nigel was the one who made him, actually – it was a spell they messed up on, and...well...that's why he grows so...fast.”
She sounded like a loon, but really, how was she supposed to explain this? There wasn't really any easy way to explain magic to someone who didn't know that it existed.

For a few moments, Kai didn't exactly know how to respond. He rubbed his head and mulled it over, listening to the sounds of the Pack playing with Shade. Patch was growling, but not meanly. He growled as if Shade was a member of the litter, and he wouldn't actually hurt the little guy. It took a few moments, but finally he looked up at Megg, letting his hand fall away from his head.
"....alright, then..."
What the hell else was he supposed to say? 'Get your freaky demon baby away from me'? 'Burn the witch!'? Kai was many things, but an a*****e was not one of them. So, the girl was a bit weird. He'd known that since he'd met her, and it hadn't deterred him before. And it wasn't like Shade had sprouted demonic horns and started spinning his head 'round backwards. He was just growing a bit fast. It wasn't a big deal. And it wasn't a problem. It just...took some time to get used to, that's all. He hadn't had that time, yet, but he knew he would get it eventually.
"You should probably get to your appointment." He tacked on, looking over at the clock. "You can pick Shade up whenever you're done. It's...not a problem." He offered what he hoped was a reassuring smile, shifting slightly in his chair.

Admittedly, Megg was more than a little bit nervous about this. She wasn't particularly expecting for Kai to take it so well. She doubted that he'd ever (consciously) encountered magic before, and any normal person would think that she was completely crazy. The fact that he stayed silent for so long only made her all the more anxious.
In the end, his response was...simple. Clearly still confused, but...simple. He wasn't yelling, or calling her a freak, he was just...taking it as it was. He was obviously going to need to get used to this, but his reaction was still far better than what she'd been expecting. It was hard to tell who was more in shock now - him, or her.
When he spoke again, reminding her of her appointment, Megg snapped out of her thoughts and nodded slightly. She gave Kai and smile in return before standing up, a grateful expression in her eyes. "Alright...thank you." And she didn't just mean for watching Shade. It was then that the brunette promised herself that she'd make it up to him...somehow. For now, she really needed to get going. "Shade? I'm going now?" The little boy looked over from where he'd been playing with the pups, and quickly scampered over after untangling himself from the squirming pile. Megg knelt down to give him a quick hug and a kiss on the head before smiling at the child. "You be good for Kai today, okay? I'll be back to get you later."
"'Kay Momma. Love you." Shade snuggled up to her for a moment before letting go of her. "I'll be goo'; promise!" He looked so positively angelic as he said so that you'd think that he never got into trouble. His mother chuckled and ruffled his hair before looking back to Kai as she stood.
"I won't be too late...thanks again." This time, her smile was far more relaxed. Perhaps this would work itself out after all. "I'll see you later." And with that, she left.
Shade waved at his mother until she'd disappeared out the door before shifting his gaze up towards Kai. Though he'd known the young man for a while now, this was probably the first time that the little boy had ever been left alone with him - or anyone who wasn't his mother or Auntie Kali, really. Uncle Nigel and Uncle Zak weren't exactly allowed to babysit either, so this was a fairly new experience for him. After a moment of thinking about it, Shade looked up, his tail flicking back and forth behind him. "You wanna play?"

Kai looked over as Shade spoke, crouching down in front of him after a moment and grinning. "I dunno, do you wanna play?" He chuckled at the young boym keeping his balance as Patch bounded over and headbutted his knee. He wanted to play, it seemed, and he was impatient for one of these people to pay attention to him! How could they be standing there and ignoring him, anyways? It was ridiculous. They were ridiculous. It needed to be remedied by petting him!
Kai laughed and scooped Patch up in one hand, holding the wriggling puppy across his knees. "I know someone wants to play. Why don't we head outside with the dogs, then?" He offered. He was sure both Shade and the dogs would ike that. Kids liked to be outside..Right?

Normally, Shade wasn't incredibly fond of playing outside. He was far more interested in playing video games, and tended to take after his mother somewhat in that department. However, they didn't have pets at the mansion, and thus the dogs were what currently held his attention, rather than the gameboy that was shoved into the front pocket of his overalls.
The little boy grinned at Patch, then at Kai as the young man suggested that they go outside. "'Kay!" Being able to play with the dogs was like a treat for him - he only got to do it whenever he and his mother came to visit Kai. Shade didn't understand why they couldn't get a pet back at the mansion - Uncle Zak and Uncle Nigel sucked for not allowing stuff like that. Pets were fun, and Shade could only imagine how much fun he and Faust could have with a pet! "C'n we play fetch with 'em? C'n we??" he asked, already scurrying over towards the door.
