Out on the training fields, a number of first years stood in a single file line next to a broom. Their teacher was pacing back and forth, talking animatedly, but only a few of the students were paying him any mind. Serge Moss, like so many others, was not.

"Who does he think he is?" Serge hissed to his friend. "We've been out here for almost an hour, and we haven't even got to touch them yet!" Indeed, the class period was almost over, and the energetic, yet dim witted teacher had only lectured. This wasn't even a lecture class, and the students were restless and eager.

Serge, who was extremely excited going into this particular class period, was antsy, and he was pretty sure that, with all the teacher's babbling, they'd never be able to fly the brooms. "I serious," He whispered, eying the teacher has he passed nearby. "If we don't get to fly, I'm gonna..." He let the threat hang, both unsure of what he was going to do, but sure enough he was going to do it.

Kennedy had his hands in his pocket trying desperately to cling to something the teacher was saying. However, the man may have well have been the teacher from peanuts just yammering away as he was. Kennedy glanced at his best friend. "I think... he thinks he is the teacher." HE rolled his eyes and glanced at his watch. "Five more minutes until free period... i doubt we are flying today."

He glanced to Serge. "Calm down..." He smirked. "Don't worry...we will fly." Kennedy had a smirk that said trust me i have an idea. It was one he would get just before... he got into trouble. But usually it was fun while they were getting into trouble.

He thus tuned out the teacher and started scoping the yard. Hefound the perfect place. Five minutes passed. "Professor... Do you need help? We can carry some of the brooms to the storage locker if you want." He grinned. Another systematic smile he had mastered. it usually got him anything he wanted... Girls or guys... aside from serge...which was probably one of the reasons they were best friends.

The professor looked surprised. But he nodded none the less. "Come on" He scooped up four brooms and winked at Serge. "Why dont you grab a couple too..." He started off toward the storage closet while the teacher finished cleaning up.When he had made it to the closet he placed two behind the shed and put the other two inside. He twitched his head to motion Serge to place his in the closet and then go back to walk with the professor. As he was walking back he whispered. "All set... ten more minutes and we can fly..."

Serge rolled his eyes at his friend. Really. This was no time for jokes, this was suppose to be action! Adventure! FLYING! Serge kicked at the ground, sending dirt and a few tiny rocks to scatter in the grass. Even violence wasn't helping his impatience.

"This stinks." He mumbled, crossing his arms over his chest. He knew there was no chance Mr. Yammerpants was letting them fly today. Sighing, Serge turned his head in time to catch his friends words. It only served to confuse him, however, since he missed the ever-telling smirk. Serge only shook his head, pouting for the rest of the class.

Because his hopes were dashed, he really wasn't looking forward to the free period like he normally would. He didn't want to stuff his face, or play a game, he wanted to fly. However, anything was better than standing out here like an idiot, and Serge tried to be the first one out of the field.

"What is that idiot doing?" Serge was in a mood now. He hadn't gotten anything he wanted, and now Kennedy was being a teacher's pet. Of all the times... well, then he was just going to have to spend this free period alone, wouldn't he. It's his fault for being such a goody-two-shoes.

Serge frowned. Did he really expect him to help clean up. He wasn't in the mood, especially since he didn't get to touch the stupid sticks. Balling up his fists, he stomped the short was back and angrily grabbed an armful of brooms. "What are you doing." He glared at his friend, marching angrily behind him. Serge kept looking back at the teacher, glaring and mumbling under his breath all the while. No, Serge was not in the mood to be nice, not at all. Especially not to the loony who wouldn't even let them fly, even when he promised the period before!

Angry he had to work, and about the outcome of the day, he almost threw the broomsticks into the closet. Even though he knew how to properly care for them, he dropped them in bristles down. He smirked when he left, glad to know that the teacher would have to right them when he dropped off his load. It made him feel a bit better, even though it might make some of the brooms worse off in the future. Still angry, but feeling better, he fell into step with Kennedy as they left the training pitch with the teacher. Every few steps, Serge looked around for a rock to kick, but the field seemed to be clean of them.

He was no longer angry at Kennedy, however, having taken a lot of his anger out on the brooms, and so when he leaned in as though to tell a secret, Serge had no qualms in leaning as well. "What do you mean?" He asked, raising an eyebrow as he looked over his friend's face. It seemed confidant enough, and Serge was inclined to believe him. "How are you going to manage that?" A playful grin settled onto his face. He wanted to fly, but seeing Kennedy work at undoing a magical lock all by himself would have been an alright alternative as well.

While he didn't have a watch of his own, Serge figured he could estimate the time well enough. A small laugh escaped his lips and he stretched his arms over his head. "You're on." He said. If he'd won, there would be a nice increase in his winning box, a drawer in his room stuffed with candy of all kinds. If he lost, well, flying was better than candy anyway.

Kennedy stuffed his hands in his pockets and waited while the teacher locked the brooms into the storage locker. He simply waited while his friend looked at him like he had a few too many heads.

Walking by serge and behind the teacher he stayed quiet until they parted ways with the teacher at the castle steps. Kennedy turned with a smile to watch Serge. "You know i wouldn't get your hopes up for just anything." However cool he looked when walking slowly and moving like a snake, he threw it to the wind and took off across the lawn. He ran behind the shed to bring out the two brooms he had stashed.

"Well?" He held up two of the best brooms the school had. He was very proud of himself. "Ready to fly Serge?" He didn't think he needed to really ask but for the sake of gaining some of his cool back he had to ask it. Giving that all knowing grin he tossed one of the brooms to Serge. "On the count of Three?"

"You've been known too." Serge countered as they ditched the teacher. He still wasn't sure what Kennedy had up his sleeves, but following him was a win-win situation, so he was content being a follower.

Serge laughed when his friend took off across the grounds, rushing like an idiot into battle. Shrugging, Serge followed in his footsteps, catching up to his friend rather quickly thanks to his years in sports. He was his team's best soccer player before he quit. (Actually he had been kicked from the team for getting into fights with his teammates, but that's not really important.) Serge stopped in front of the shed, waiting for Kennedy to start waving around his wand uselessly. (They had tried before, and there was no known spell to open locks. If there was, well, there's be a lot less doors they couldn't get into.) But his hand didn't even reach for it, and instead he looped around to the back. Confused and a but put off, Serge followed after him only to see two wonderful, beautiful- alright, they were kind of crappy, but the school didn't carry up to date supplies, but they were the best- brooms.

"Yes!" He almost shouted, pumping a fist in the air. Brooms: Secure! Sure, now he was out a load of candy, but it was going to be totally worth it. Serge walked closer to Kennedy, he could almost see himself in the air already. "You know it." He replied with a grin, catching the broom with ease. This was it, the moment he had been waiting for, the moment he would fly. He could feel magic, either real or imagined, coursing through his veins as the broomstick sat immobile in his hands.

"Yeah..." He whispered, awe flooding his voice. He wasn't even off the ground and already he felt like he could rule the world. Adrenaline pumping, Serge settled himself into position on the broom and began counting. "One..." All he needed to do was push off, it was really quite simple. But this time, instead of one of those dorky kid brooms that only went two feet off the ground, he was going to be able to fly one a real one. "Two..." The numbers seemed to echo in his mind, as though they were saying it repeatedly. His hands clenched the handle, tightening in anticipation. Would he be able to get off the ground? Would it feel like he thought it would? Would it be as easy as the kid brooms he'd ridden before. "Three!"

It took a moment for him to realize what happened. At first, he thought he hadn't done anything at all, and he was still on the ground, but he felt his knees bend and push off. He felt the magic of the broom take hold, and the ground suddenly dropped below him. Wind rushed past his ears and his hair got in his eyes and blew about wildly and the air seemed a bit colder, but probably because he was moving. He wasn't sure how to stop going up, or how to change direction, did you just will it, and it happened? Why did he leave his stomach down below? His breath caught in his throat and he thought for sure he was going to drown, but he wasn't underwater and the air was clear.

His eyes opened wide as he stopped moving, and sweet oxygen rushed into his lungs so fast he choked. He looked down, and already he was so far up! Well, about three stories off the ground, but it was high for a first time flyer! He could see the roof of the broom shed, and he wondered momentarily at how they kept it so clean.

Suddenly he was laughing, and he couldn't focus enough to stop it. He was flying! Actually flying! And even though the broom was just sitting in mid-air, he had done it, and it was thrilling and wonderful and great and there was no way it could get better than this!

"This is awesome!" He laughed, looking around for his friend. Surely they hadn't drifted too far apart in their takeoff.

Kenny had an opposite reaction. His stomach almost got lost when he kicked off on the count of three. The broom's magic wrapped around him and carried him speeding like a bullet after his friend.

Kennedy pulled his broom to a stop not far off from Serge. Careful tostay righted he smirked at Serge. He was looking like a two year old... but it was worth it... even if he disliked the candy that would be his prize. Kennedy had never liked candy but because serge did, he put on a happy face and took it as a bribe. He could just use it to get girls later on.

Holding the broom with two hands he smiled and glanced at Serge. He looked sturdy and confident on the broom. Lucky him. Carefully controlling the broom he moved up closer to serge. "See aren't i the best friend a guy could ever have?" Laughing he glanced around. He could feel his body shaking. He prayed that Serge wouldn't be able to tell.

His mind fought for something to say. "Uh... how bout... a race... to the forest and back.... winner gets Half the amount of candy i just won from you..." He gave a confident smirk. "Come on... on the count of three again?"

Kennedy wasn't too far off, they had somehow managed to stick close to one another in takeoff. Serge angled his broom, trying to edge it closer to his friend. It wouldn't have been good to be caught just as they were getting started. With a wild grin, Serge laughed at his friend, who appeared to be struggling to stay on.

"Having some trouble, eh?" He laughed again, this was just the best! He was sure his hair was a mess, tossed about so from the wind. Kennedy fared little better. "I don't know how you do it." He said, taking a hand off the broom handle to wave it in emphasis. Of course, there was no real emphasis in such a comment, but he wanted to show off, though he wasn't yet ready to take away both hands.

This was amazing, he could scarcely believe it. Just being in the air, even if he wasn't doing much but sitting, it was exhilarating! He couldn't even begin to imagine riding a good broom. "Seriously," he said, dipping the broom down so he descended a short ways. "You're awesome. Amazing." He grinned up at his friend. "Pick one." Taking it slow wasn't something he normally did, but nothing really felt slow in the air. Serge did some sort of zig-zag, going up and down around his friend, so he didn't loose track.

"A race?" He said, settling himself beside his friend once more. Serge looked to the forest, it was a ways away, but not too far. They'd have to go over the wall, since the training field was boxed in, but it wouldn't be too hard. "Yeah, that sounds good." Serge rose his broom a bit higher, so he wouldn't have to raise it much more. "Let's start the countdown, then." He said, pointing the broom in the right position and adjusting his feet against the braces. He could barely wait.

"One..."

Kennedy laughed trying to pull off a more confident air. He smirked. "Never... i could out ride you anyday." He pulled up on his broom and the broom raised in the air slightly before it went back to being level with serge.

Kennedy had already figured how he would get over the wall. His mind always four steps ahead of itself. He leveled himself to be next to Serge again.

"one"

Kenny smirked and to prove that he could take one hand off the brook he raised two fingers and wiggled them. "Two."

Serge grinned, Kennedy was so funny! That's no way to win a race. Serge waited till both of his hands were back on the broomstick before he took his turn. "Three!"

It was almost weird how easy this seemed, how well the broom responded to his touch, how he already seemed to know how to fly, you'd think he was an air sign, or something meaningful and useless like that. Still, he was a beginner on a broom, and instead of traveling up in the air to jump the wall, it seemed to slow and sink as he got near it.

He frowned, but wasn't sure what was wrong. He didn't know enough about them to realize whats wrong, and he attempted shaking the handle before it began to look like he would loose. (After all, going slower than fast on a broom is still pretty fast.) One of his attempts seemed to work and, after a useless dip, he was back on track, rising and gaining speed.

Was he suppose to lean in to make it go faster? Like they did in horse races, or was he suppose to lean back so he didn't fall face forward into the dirt? Or was he just suppose to will it to go faster, like it was some kind of wish machine?

Serge shook his head as he passed over the wall. He was able to get enough distance from it that he had no fear of running into it, which wouldn't have been a good idea at all, and so took off past it with confidence and ease.

The forest was in his sights now, their tall, dark trees forming a line bordering the grounds. He wasn't even breaking any rules by racing to it... though, stealing the brooms might have been. Serge cast an eye over the ground as he flew, there didn't seem to be any teachers out, but he wasn't paying much attention, and he was going by too fast to get a good look at them. So far, no one really noticed him flying. He supposed he was too high, or that maybe they thought he was a bird, but it was most likely because people aren't always looking up...

He didn't know how fast he was going, or how high up he was, he didn't even know if he was winning the race. All he knew was he was in the air, and having a blast, and this would definitely go down in his books as one of the best days ever.

As he neared the forest, he slowed down a bit. He wasn't sure if he'd be able to make a turn while still going fast, and he managed it so he only had to circle one of the trees to get back on track. As he was leaving, heading off in the direction of the training grounds, he looked back over his shoulder. Just being near the trees seemed to make him cold... or was that because he was flying around with no jacket?

PostPosted: Tue Mar 15, 2011 5:06 pm

And then they were off. Both his hands clenched the neck of the broom. He swallowed a scream as the broom raced off in the direction of the forest. His eyes were closed tight. Peeking his eyes open he let out a sigh of relief as he noticed Serge was too engrossed in what they were doing to see him having troubles.

He cleared the wall. Relief rushed over him. His next obstacle? The forest was coming all too fast. He glanced all over. Where did they keep the breaks on the school brooms?! He turned. Leaning full force into the broom. It rounded the first few trees. He smiled. Hey he was getting the hang of it. Bending low over the broom he was gaining speed.

He was hot on the trail of Serge who had been able to sustain the lead the entire time. He grinned. Bending down more he reached out and gripped the neck of the broom tight. With great effort the broom moved faster. And then the most awesome moment of his life turned into the worst.

The broom went a** over tea kettle... And so did Kennedy. He fell right over the wall. The wind was rushing by his ears his hair had come undone and for a minute his vision had a nice golden frame. And then pain and black.

Kennedy tried to fight back the darkness. It was all consuming and his arm was throbbing. He opened his eyes and the light was so bright he could see nothing but light. Had he gone blind? Was it true that the blind only saw black... maybe it was opposite and they only saw a blinding white light.

However that last thought was nullified as his vision swam back to him. The wall and everything else around him. He felt sick. He remembered how high up he had been. And that meant he must have fallen that far. Kenny frowned and propped himself up on his right elbow. He sighed. He seemed to be in one piece... He moved his left arm and his vision swam back to black and then back to normal. Although, his stomach was doing odd little flips.

He eyed his left arm. It was definitely broken. "s**t."

Serge shrugged, forgetting about the creeping feeling as he righted himself in his seat, if you could call it that. Slowly, he pushed the broom forward, originally because it's a foolish idea indeed to head in one direction while looking in the other, but now because he seemed to be alone in the skies, save a cluster of birds far above.

"Ace?" He called, looking around in confusion. Where had he gone? Serge took the broom lower, concerned. Certainly he wasn't in the forest, he hadn't been anywhere close when Serge had made it there. Serge took one hand off his broom, curving it around his mouth. "Ace!?" He called once more. Really, this wasn't funny, not one bit. Serge flew back towards the wall where they had started. If he wasn't in this area, then he had to be back there.

He sat in the air for a while by himself, frowning and looking about. Eventually, as he neared the wall, he saw a black mark at the bottom and, worried, Serge headed down. "Ace!" He shouted, noticing the dark gold color that spilled about the figure's head. Serge sent the broom into as steep a dive as he could manage and descended as fast as he thought safe, circling around Kennedy until he reached the floor.

"Hey, man, are you alright!?" Serge stumbled off the broom the moment his feet hit the ground. He rushed to his friend, but was unsure what to do once he got there, only really able to stare and move his mouth, though no words came out. Kennedy's arm looked super bad, all gross and bent weird.

Unsure of what to do, he looked around for someone to help, hands moving about as he unconsciously fretted how to help. He shifted his weight from foot to foot, mumbling nonsense under his breath.

PostPosted: Tue Mar 15, 2011 7:08 pm

Kennedy didn't know how long he had stayed there alone on the ground. It felt like hours, he was sure it was only a few moments. He was getting sick with fear as he laid there by himself. He checked all his other limbs. They worked. Bruised... but they didn't make his vision swim and thats all that mattered.

And then all at once Serge was there. He was fretting and making a fuss. Kenny just needed to get up. He needed to get to the nurse before he could do anything. "Serge!" He reached out with his right hand and grasped the boy's ankle and frowned. "Its ok... I promise... Its just my arm..." He let go and used his right arm to push himself up. "We have to take caution or you are gonna get in as much trouble... if not more... then i am... So... We need to..." He broke off and took a deep breath. He had moved his left again."We need to get the brooms back to the shed... just lean them against the side... the teacher will think we were careless and forgot to put them in... "

He ran his right hand through his hair... "Then i need to get to the hospital wing... I'm sure the nurse will have me fixed in no time..." He gave a confident smile but it faltered slightly as his arm started throbbing."Come on...Help me up...."

Serge jumped. He really shouldn't move like that! What if it got worse! He didn't really know how to react to broken limbs- well, on himself they were fine. He could judge the pain, he could figure things out, he was calm, cool, and collected. But Kennedy having one, he didn't know what to do! Was it his fault? Should he really have wanted to go flying that bad? What if it couldn't be fixed? What if they got in trouble and they had to suffer through the punishment with a broken arm? Kennedy had never really gotten hurt, at least, not this bad, and not when Serge was around, and it was different, and weird, and a bit scary.

He really didn't want to open his eyes to see a completely mangled corpse of his best friend! Well, his eyes weren't closed, and Kennedy wasn't really a corpse, but still! What if!

Serge took in a big breath. Right. Calm down. "Brooms. Shed. Got it." He nodded. This was all going to be very simple, hide the evidence, get help, simple and straightforward.

No matter what he did, he couldn't get rid of the worried frown on his face. It's going to be alright. He's not going to die. It was just an... incredibly long... fall. He was not going to die. It would be fine. He just couldn't get away from the thought that Kennedy was going to die, even though it was a rare occurrence anyone ever died from a broken arm, especially with magical medicine.

Serge stepped forward before grasping Kennedy's good arm with on hand, and yanking at his shoulder with the other. It was an awkward thing, getting him to stand, and it took more than one attempt to even get him part of the way up, mostly due to Serge's uncanny ability of mucking up delicate tasks that did not in any way involve sports.

PostPosted: Sun May 15, 2011 12:59 pm

Kennedy watched Serge fret. It must be hard for him. Kennedy had lived through many of serge's broken bones. Kenny had only ever once broken something and that was a finger... Well... now it could be said that he had broken something else. He laughed.

Holding out his right hand serge helped him to his feet, and then gracefully dropped him once more on his a**. Kennedy smirked and was helped once more to stand and this time he stayed up. Wobbly, but standing. He caught himself as his vision swam and his stomach flipped.

Kennedy looked at serge. "See good as new." He started toward his fallen broom. Carefully, very carefully, he scooped it up and started toward the broom shed. "Come on Serge...The longer you stand there looking worried... the more likely i won't be able to use my arm in the future.." That thought made his stomach swim again. He didn't want to be a cripple.

He was holding his arm to his chest. It hurt when he just let it hang there. He leaned his broom against the shed and looked back at serge. "Don't think this broken arm means i can't beat you at everything still."

Serge bit his lip. Should Kennedy really be up and carrying things like that? "Do you want me to get it?" He motioned multiple times at the broom, his jittery arms not really being able to do what he wished them to. He couldn't stop staring at Kennedy's arm. Even though it wasn't suddenly going to come to life with a mind of it's own like a really bad zombie movie, Serge couldn't really stop thinking about how horrible it was. And how this whole thing was his fault.
