Okay so, the other day a customer left a formal complaint with the company I work at that he wasn't thanked for his transaction. (It wasn't me who served him, by the way).
Now, it seems downright odd to me to thank a customer for his/her transaction.
Thanks are normally given for services provided. In this case, the company is the one providing the service. We provide the items, and pack them into bags for transport.
So what's your point of view? Do you think that customers should be thanked for their transactions? Is it normal where you come from?

I think both the customer and the employee should thank each other, since they both need each other.

I see what you mean but, You are doing them a service because you are providing a product. They are doing you a service by keeping you in business by deliberately buying it. No reason to not thank each other for doing business. As for the OP situation, if somebody didn't say thank you to me, I definitely wouldn't get upset. Some people just don't.

I guess, it just would seem downright weird to me to be thanked for buying something D: Not to me, because I know exactly where 70% of that money is probably going xd $1.25 for a pint of water when you can buy a gallon for $1.60.

If I made a company, I'd make the customers thank me. Which would require a really good company what would be difficult to compete against otherwise....

I don't think it's NECESSARY--just polite. I don't thank the customers at McDonald's, but I'm also not the one taking orders. I just run people's food out to them sometimes if they're parked. But they're not doing anything for me, so I don't see a reason to thank them. I just tell them to have a nice day.
I'd be upset if an employee was actually RUDE to me, but just because they didn't thank me? I wouldn't care at all XP

"Thank you for choosing this company and providing us some money" or "Thank you for providing me wares and/or some kind of service" Both are ways of showing appreciation and may as well be shortened down to a simple "thank you". If both parties smile as well, there may be some encouragement for future transactions as well. Unless (of course), I'm being naïve here.

To be completely honest it depends how much of an asshat the customer was. If they are grumping and groaning I'm not gonna say thanks to them unless I'm being subtly sarcastic. However, it's generally just a polite thing to do. But on that you shouldn't get marked down or complain about it if people don't.

Um... didn't Apple kinda already do this? And, at my work, its all customer service. You start with a hello, and end with a thank you. Why? Because they are the reason you have a job. Without customers, the store would not make any money. Without any money, it would close, and we would all be on the street with no job. So, I thank them for providing me with work. ...Also, because every customer I help helps me waste more time, bringing me closer to the time I get to leave work. So, thank you for that, too.

It's most definitely nothing to waste paper or energy writing a complaint over, but saying thank you is acceptable. If a cashier says thanks, I say thanks, too. Otherwise, I just tell them to have a good day/evening, but I don't too much care for that kind of politeness, I only do it not to seem rude.

I say thank you because it's polite.
However back in the days of bagging groceries I was repeatedly told to thank the customers due to the fact that they wouldn't notice the 20 foot tall sign, and as the last person they deal with in the store it's up to me to leave them with the most positive image possible.
I never said it once. Not even once.
I wasn't a bagger long.

What Gakre said. Also there's the 'thank you for contributing to my paycheck,without your patronage I wouldn't have a job' The customer-provider relationship is a symbiotic one.
People that treat employees as servants or subhuman, get shoddy (if any) service, the 'extra special' sauce on their food, etc. Businesses that treat customers for granted generally don't stay in business very long if there is any semblance of a free market economy.
When I worked for my family business (wholesale/retail) I was supposed to thank customers. I did, not just because it meant better and more business, but I was honestly grateful for having a roof over my head. Not every one has that.
