After he sidled away from the big fight, Sakelo had wandered around checking out the lay of the land. It was obvious that a bunch of hyenas lived there, but he hadn't met any other than the first three. Something to be thankful for, if the the rest of the family behaved like the three he had met.
The queen, Bahari, had tracked him down a while later to have a chat. She hadn't really seemed interested in talking to him, though. She asked what he was doing there, told him to behave himself, and left. Well, okay. So he supposed he was 'in'. He didn't know if that was a good thing or a bad thing.
Sakelo supposed it was a good thing. At least it would give him more time to work on Zalika. He gave her the rest of the day to calm down, and showed up at her den as soon as the moon and risen, a flower clutched between his teeth. It matched the one in his hair.
"Hey Zally," he called into the den, his voice a bit muffled by the flower. "We're going on a date."

Zalika had been so MIFFED by the fact that her very own father had made her out to be some kind of terrible and awful freak of nature. Then again, she hadn't expected Bekeli to go on and on about how gorgeously stunning Zalika was -- that would just be weird. And honestly, he HAD brought her back a rather handsome male, one with pretty colors. He was pretty well-behaved, too, and that was something that Zalika could appreciate. After all, aside from providing their Queen with pups, a consort's duty was to make their Queen feel as beautiful and utterly amazing as they could.
She hadn't expected Sakelo to come after her, and when she heard his voice she leapt to her feet, frantically looking around for a moment. How did she look? With an almost inaudible whine hastily shook out her fur and her mane before taking a deep breath and stepping into the mouth of the den.
Of course by that time she'd perfectly schooled her face into an expression of annoyance, one that faltered only the slightest when he saw the flower clutched in his mouth. Aww.... how sweet~
"A date?"

Sakelo knew he was lookin' good. The romantic flower carried in his mouth, the snazzy flower in his mane, and his overall good looks ... well, he looked like a very swanky man. There was no way Zalika would be able to resist him. Oh, she might have an annoyed look on her face, but that was probably just for show. Zalika was just kind of spiky, like a luscious and beautiful ... cactus. Or cobra.
He laid the flower at her feet. "Yeah, a date." Did she not know what a date was? That seemed kind of weird. But then, he imagined she didn't have a whole lot of suitors living with such a wackadoo family. Admittedly, Sakelo himself hadn't been on a whole lot of dates, but he thought he was pretty pro nonetheless. "You know, we go out and have a good time. Get to know each other. Since I'm your consort and all." He raised his eyebrows at her.

"I know what a date is," she huffed. Actually, she didn't really. She'd never been on a date before. There weren't many males around that she could even consider going on a date with. In fact, the only male she'd met that she'd even remotely consider going on a date with (remotely as in she was the last female and he was the last male) would be that old fella she'd met a while back. He had been handsome and nice but he was old.
Sakelo was young and fruitful and handsome and gentle and .... Okay, Zalika, snap out of it.
"Is that flower for me?" she asked, lifting one dainty brow in question. "And where are we going exactly?"

"Of course it's for you," Sakelo said cheerfully. Zalika's bad temper bounced off him. She wasn't nearly as scary as she had been earlier that day. She wasn't screaming, for one thing.
Sakelo hadn't actually thought this out too well. He had figured there was a pretty good chance Zalika would reject him. But he wasn't about to tell Zalika that he was winging it. He shrugged. "We're just going on a nice walk in the moonlight ... for now. We'll talk and share our feelings and stuff."

Zalika nudged the flower with a paw, eye-balling the tooth-marked stem of the flower. She didn't really want to pick it up because it had his slobber all over it, but she didn't want to seem ungrateful and just leave it there to crunch up in the dirt. With a hearty sigh she daintily picked up the flower by the tippy top of the stem and placed it on a natural ledge that formed the side of the cave. Once finished she turned her attention back to Sakelo.
"Talk and share our feelings," she mumbled dubiously. That didn't sound so great. Maybe he would just tell her how beautiful she was. That would be much better, but she didn't want to seem like a prissy b***h (she'd heard herself mentioned as such) around Sakelo. No, she did not want to lose him to Kibibi.
She supposed she would have to be nice.
"I know a nice place to sit. It's near the lake."

Zalika didn't exactly sound enthusiastic about talking and sharing feelings. Sakelo brightened up a bit. Maybe she wasn't into that boring girly stuff. He thought chicks usually were just dying to talk about their feelings. Zalika obviously had better things in mind.
Ohhhhh, yeaaaahh.
"Near the lake sounds perfect," Sakelo said smoothly. He walked at her side and just a bit behind her, letting her lead him. She had fussed about him walking beside her. It would be good to butter her up.

Well, she would never admit it but Zalika had started thinking that she probably couldn't find herself a mate as well-behaved as Sakelo. Look at him, just walking along slightly behind her as any well-mannered Consort would. It was so refreshing. He was pretty smart, too, and had even brought her a flower.
Nobody else had brought her a flower.
As they drew close, Zalika exhaled softly. "I like how the moon looks when it shines over the water," she mumbled.

It was hard to stay all polite and meek, but it seemed to be paying off. He didn't hear one crotchety word out of Zalika all the way to the lake. That had to be some kind of record for the cranky young hyena.
Sakelo looked up at the moon. It did look pretty nice on the water. He was more interested in looking at Zalika, though. "It looks very nice," he said. "This is a great place to live. The rogue lands are very..." Hmmm, what would Zalika like to hear? "...scruffy."
Sakelo padded down to sit at the edge of the lake, hoping that there weren't any crocodiles here. That would definitely spoil the mood.

"Thankfully I've never had to experience it," she replied, hovering above the lake on the small hill that overlooked it. She carefully stepped over a small rock in order to make her way down the choppy little hill of the lakeside. "You don't have to be afraid of monsters in the water," she groused, always a grumpy b***h even when she was trying to be nice, "there aren't any in there. The lake is too small and the streams that feed into it too weak." She shrugged and took another step down the hill and promptly tripped, face-planting into the cool mud of the lakebed.
What a great and awesome night this was turning out to be.
Pulling herself upright, she spat out a mouthful of gross dirt and bit back a shriek of dismay. All in all this had been the worst day of her life and she really couldn't wait until it was over.
Stunned and covered in mud, Zalika slowly, slowly, slooooowly turned to look at Sakelo. Speechless, she just stared at him. If he knew what was good for him he wouldn't laugh. She'd fist-feed him mud if he even dared think about it.

Sakelo hung back just a little bit as they climbed down the hill. Even though Zalika was confident about the lake's lack of monsters, he had found that it paid to be cautious when in strange lands.
Although if Zalika was serious about making him her 'consort', maybe these lands wouldn't be strange to him for much longer ...
All of a sudden Zalika was flat on her face in the mud. Sakelo backed away as she stood, getting out of range in case she decided to go into a frenzy like she had earlier that day. For a few endless seconds he didn't know what to do, at all. Laugh? Run away? Stand here and be murdered?
Then Sakelo went into action, jumping into the mud himself with all four feet. "What an excellent idea, princess!" He yelled cheerfully, as it splashed up over his legs. "How fun!"

Fun? Fun?! How could he think this was FUN?! She'd just gotten a face full of mud, a mouth full of it as well, and Sakelo willingly jumped into the muck in the name of fun? Either he was crazy or he was trying to make her feel better about being such a klutz. Well, either way, since they were both filthy, well, she might as well let loose and make the most of it.
Cupping up a pawful of muck she slung it at his face. She hoped it would hit him right between the eyes, and she couldn't help but laugh as she lobbed it directly at his face. She'd never had a mudfight before, this could prove to be most entertaining.
Either that or she'd hurt him. Bad.

If he wasn't standing in mud, Sakelo might have been able to dodge the muck that Zalika threw directly at his face. Even if he had been able to doge, he wouldn't have. Sakelo knew the rules of playing games with girls, especially witchy ones.
He would have to let her win ... but she couldn't know he was letting her win.
Sakelo spluttered and staggered back as the mud hit him in the face. It was indeed a direct hit. He wiped the mud from his eyes with an already-muddy paw, succeeding only in smearing more mud all over himself. Okay, this was kind of disgusting, but at least they were right next to a lake. This crud wouldn't dry on them. He scooped up a pawful of mud himself and tossed it at Zalika, definitely NOT aiming it at her face.

The cold mud landed on her hip and she stared at it for a moment before a strange, strange thing happened. She slowly, slowly turned back around to face him. A long moment passed before a creaky smile awkwardly turned up the corners of her mouth. The smile almost looked painful and uncertain, but it was a smile.
And then, something even more shocking and surprising. A rusty and reedy laugh rumbled up from her chest. She was having a great time. She'd never had this much fun, really! In the darkness and under the pale light of the silvery-yellow moon, she didn't really have to worry about being seen. No, Zalika could enjoy herself.
