User ImageZerrüt stood from her nap and stretched as she yawned wide. The sun was starting to get low on the horizon which meant she needed to prepare to hunt. Not being in a pack meant she had to do everything for herself that included foraging and hunting which was best early morning or late afternoon.

The black and neon female had initially had difficulty blending in with her environment but she had found a way around it, sticking to shadows and bushes. Early autumn was the best time for her to hunt - winter being the worst. Yet she had survived another one alone and each day was getting easier.

She took off at a trot initially, stopping to smell different spots every now and then but as she got further away from her nesting area she caught two odors - one was another wolf, which she would deal with later, the other was a delicious rabbit which would be handled now. She slowed considerably as she silently located her prey. Crouching low she spotted it while in the cover of a bush.

The plump creature was standing erect, sniffing the air. It's hole was not in sight which was optimal - it couldn't just dive away. Zerrüt was so close it would be hard to miss. Pupils dilated as she honed in on her target and prepared to pounce.

Kuruk knew the female was near, that she was hunting, in fact he'd been trailing her for a while now after seeing her make a ruthless kill the last time she ate and he'd been intrigued enough to notice her more than other females he'd met so far, of course it helped to know she was most likely to become fertile soon, he could tell by her scent. He watched and waiting while she found and chose her prey.

He licked his maw, hardly able to contain his hopes for a ruthless female like himself. Born into a pack as a Gamma, Kuruk was looking for more and had slipped away when he was barely an adolescent and he had done very well for himself. He hunted so well that, if he didn't make sure to keep himself in shape, he'd be fat. But Kuruk-Baikal NEVER wasted a morsel, he would eat everything of his kill and leave nothing but bones and inedible parts for the foxes, ravens and other such scavengers.

He watched as she selected her prey, from where he was he could almost see her quivering with eagerness for her kill and this pleased him greatly, it seemed she took pleasure in the kill for surely she wasn't starving, a little on the thinner side but still, a decent weight. He waited until she was about to pounce then he darted forwards, fast as a snake striking it's prey and snapped the rabbit's neck in one swift maneuver. He stood proudly, tail erect and spat the rabbit out at his own feet, not saying a word but daring her to approach him with his eyes.

Zerrüt was startled by the sudden movement. She had been a fraction of a second from pouncing before this stranger swept in. The scent she had caught earlier from a strange wolf emanated from this opportunistic thief. Mentally she kicked herself - she shouldn't have ignored his scent and gone after the rabbit, now she looked a fool and was out dinner.

His arrogance at dropping the rabbit and staring at her with his head held high added insult to injury. She snarled at the green wolf and stepped forward, hackles raise as she moved to circle him. There was something in her that kept her from attacking. Usually she would have tried to take the rabbit but he smelled so very... male. What was it that was making her hesitate?

Uncharacteristically as she moved closer and became surrounded by his scent she lost some of her anger. She seemed more wary, curious and annoyed as she looked him over. Confusion too, definitely, she wasn't used to recovering from such insult so soon. He didn't seem like he was going to speak as she moved so she opted to go first, "Who are you, vy did you do zat?" There was still a growl in her throat that was complemented by her strange accent.

Kuruk stared hard at the female and curled a lip, showing hard white teeth, when she moved forwards. His posture every bot that of one demanding respect. His ear twitched in interest at her when she spoke, smiling just a little at her change in posture. "You speak strangely female" he stated, pulling himself up straighter "Do what? make a kill? why would any wolf kill" he sneered, as if she was being stupid by asking why he had killed the rabbit. "you can stop your growling too" he demanded, except he was slightly hoping that she wouldn't. Things had just gotten a little more interesting because her body was reacting to him, meaning that she was nearer to being fertile that he'd thought.

She growled again both in spite of him and her own strangely body reactions. "I speak fine, and you stole my kill out of spite, vy vould you do zat? Vat is your motiff?" She saw his ear twitch and change in demeanor, was he expecting this reaction from her? How could he expect something from her that she didn't even expect from herself? This conflict and confusion made her even more annoyed as she continued to circle him.

Kuruk gave a humorless chuckle "I kill to eat, i stole nothing because you hadn't killed it yet, until something is in your jaws, you cannot claim it as yours without support from others" he said coldly "I can tell from your scent that you have no pack and so cannot claim a thing" he sneered, ignoring her mention of how she spoke.

He watched as she circled him, amused at her attitude to him. He was holding himself like an Alpha would, despite having no pack behind him. It was interesting that she challenged him. He liked a challenge, especially from a female in heat.

She sneered as he spoke, "You haff no pack yourself, you cannot speak of such zings." She stopped off to his side, standing as though she was ready for him to attack even though she began to suspect more and more he didn't seem interested in fighting her or taking anything other than her dinner. She found the way he spoke strange - never answering anything directly, standing with a confidence that belied his lone nature.

Zerrüt stared into his eyes now that she had stopped moving. He was positively giddy, which just caused her to puff up more with indignance, "You haff bozzered me for a reason. Vhat do you vant?"

Kuruk smirked "No but i am the one with the kill at my paws, which means i can claim it" he said, keeping his head and tail high, standing proudly. "As i said, unless you have made the kill, you cannot claim a thing" He yawned, as if he were getting bored. He smiled and put a paw on top of the rabbit, tearing a chunk out and chewing carefully, as if in thought.

"What i want? ... well, you intrigue me" he put simply, taking another bite of the rabbit before tossing it towards her.

Zerrüt was just starting to get fed up with the arrogance of this male, though she still couldn't bring herself to leave. Something about his scent made her curious and caused her to hold her position. She cocked her head slightly at his word choice. She... intrigued him? Was she having the same effect on him that he was having on her? She watched the rabbit land at paws then looked up at him for a moment.

Shrugging, she actually laid down to eat some of the rabbit. She certainly wasn't the type to turn down a free kill... even if it should have been hers. Zerrüt kept one eye on this male swallowing before she spoke, voice insinuating that she didn't really care, "So, vhat do you call yourselff?"

Kuruk genuinely smiled, ever so slightly, in fact it was so small and so brief that you'd think it hadn't been there at all. He yawned, showing hos white and strong his teeth were if she carried on challenging. He might want her, but he wasn't going to tolerate being treated as anything but an Alpha.

He watched as she ate the rabbit, noting that she never took her gaze off him. *Clever girl, i wouldn't turn my back on myself either* he thought, sitting down but still holding himself well. "i am The Baikal" he said not giving his birth name, if he was going to start the pack, he would start now, with this female and the plan began forming in his mind. He remembered then, an old tale his mother had told the pack once, about a pack of wolves that were poison to touch, it was a story you told naughty pups, 'Go to sleep or the Baikal will get you' ... the Baikal having been the alpha male of the pack, the originator of the poison, the story told that any wolf that strayed from the pack, or misbehaved .. the Baikal would bite them, and the wolf would be under the control of the Baikal... eventually falling sick and dying.

Kuruk hoped that this female hadn't heard of the tale, or his plan would be ruined right there and then, he hoped that even IF she had a similar story, that at the very least the name would be different. Of course, the tale was a complete falsehood, just a scary story told to keep wayward ups in line and to prevent too much dispersion of a pack. If his mother hadn't completely made it up herself, then she'd heard the tale somewhere.
