It was lunch. He had snuck over to the slytherin table to sit with von and Vi. It was a perfect day... he had just received an excellent grade on a charms paper... and a passing grade on a transfiguration paper... so it was an awesome day. Honestly nothing could bring him off this high.

And then the brown barn owl he associated with mail from his mother swooped into the Great Hall. In its beak the was a bright red envelope. It was dropped ungratefully into his lap and then the owl flitted away. Marc stared at the red envelope. He glanced at his two best friends and then he went to move the letter into his pocket. But as he moved it, it came alive.

"MARCELLUS IVORY ADAIR!!!"

Marc literally jumped three feet. He glanced at Vi and von and then looked back to the spitting letter.

"We gave you explicit instructions. And YOU have disobeyed them all. "

Marc flinched and glanced over at the Griffindor table.

"As the duke of Adair... i request that you begin accomplishing these goals or you shall be punished." Marc noted that the letter didn't state what punishment.

"However, your mother sends her love." Adair's voice then died out and the letter tore itself to shreds.

Marc stared. Students were laughing. He excused himself glaring pointedly at Clarissa giving her a "This is all your fault look." He expected her to show up out in the hall to meet him.

Clarissa sat at her table, happily munching on soup and Yorkshire pudding. Sure, it was something she wouldn't usually eat, as it would be dubbed 'peasant food' and cast aside in her home, but it was good. She watched as students filed in, looking over the new arrivals. Clarissa smiled as owls of all shapes and sizes flew in, signaling the arrival of mail. She smiled when she saw the eagle owl that her family owned, which was carrying a small box containing homemade sweets from her mother.

Suddenly a screech filled the great hall. Someone had gotten a howler! How wonderfully terrible for them! She stopped all she was doing to hear who had gotten it. ''MARCELLUS IVORY ADAIR!!!" Oh, this was just too funny. She listened to the letter, and began laughing hysterically as it ripped itself to shreds, getting odd looks from her fellow Gryffindors. She looked at Marc in a 'It's your fault, don't blame me, but that's hilarious.' way, still laughing. He was the one who was late, and there was no way she was going to sit with the Hufflepuffs.

She walked over, sitting on the opposite side of the table, facing him. "That was great! What'd you do, fail potions?'' she said to him, getting some laughs from the Slytherins. She smirked, "What a wonderful place to open your howler.". Clarissa was still giggling a bit, and looked around at the Slytherins. Some of them were glaring at her, for her house, and some were just looking smug. She couldn't help feeling just a bit bad for him, getting the first howler of the year, and at the Slytherin table no less.

Marc frowned at her showing he wasn't pleased. "Last time i checked i was supposed to be the funny one." He grinned. "The best part... is it was completely about...you." He glanced at his friends. For a hufflepuff he had some pretty powerful friends.

Marc stood. For once his boyish demeanor was gone. He was just humiliated... and Adair didn't even know it... He assumed his mother had turned the letter into a howler. If it hadn't been his father's voice coming out of the letter he probably would have burst into tears and made an even bigger fool of himself.

Marc stood up. "Why not come take a walk with me." It wasn't a question. "Or we can talk right here in front of all these people."

Clarissa frowned. Was he trying to be funny? Or just trying to look like an idiot? He had already been humiliated in front of the entire great hall, she wouldv'e shut up by now if she were him. Her voice hushed to a whisper. "Absolutely not. Let's go." she stood up abruptly, quickly mouthing 'watch my things' to a friend. She dragged him out of the Great Hall and down a a hallway to a currently unused classroom. ''So what's this about it being my fault?'' she glared at him, flicking her wand at the door, casting a muffling charm to discourage any evavesdroppers. Clarissa sat on a desk, thinking about her bag. ''If I get robbed, you're paying for it.'' she quickly told him.

He was dragged. And then she had he nerve to tell him it was his money going to be used... her friends would probably take her stuff.

Marc crossed his arms leaning against a table. "Just that... Its your fault... All of this..." He shrugged. "My father told me before i left that i was to send him a letter every week telling how his business plan is running." Raising an eyebrow he spoke. "Guess what... he means you... Since i haven't been giving him the news he wants to hear... He has decided to take matter into his hands... He has enough sway i bet he could get your parents to yank you out of school and my dad would have no problem dragging my arse home for some match making parties."

He paused and frowned. "So currently ... Its your fault... However... I want to not get another howler... So... This is how it has to work... we need to make nice... Hate my parents... i don't care... but when we see each other... we are going to say... how do you do... and its great to see you... " He glared at her... "Got it..." He was running on the anger that resulted from being humiliated. He knew he was taking it out on her.. but he couldn't make himself care at the moment. "Adair also insists on us doing something together at least once a week... He suggested taking walks and doing boyfriend girlfriend stuff..." Marc frowned. "I say doing homework together counts... Once a week... We can meet up in the library and do our homework across from each other."

Clarissa frowned. Of course it was his damn father. This was just stupid. She laughed darkly. "So let me get this straight... Your father expects me to like you just because of some damn document saying that I have to marry you when I'm eighteen? God, he's dimmer than my father!" she yelled, not meaning to offend him, but doing so anyway. "Obviously he hasn't talked to or about me for more than a minute or so." she laughed, thinking of all the 'friends' her parents had tried to get her to like, who inevitably ended up running away screaming. "Fine. What's your schedule? We're bound to have at least one similar class." she frowned, fishing around in her pockets, finally handing him a slip of parchment with her schedule and the class number on it. "I have about twenty so I don't forget my classes." she quickly explained. "Don't expect me to help you, either. There's a reason my parents haven't seen my marks yet, and all of my books are in German. That reminds me, do you speak anything other than English or French? If you do, we could speak about this in public without anyone knowing." Clarissa frowned. She thought about the letter she had received from her uncle, and how he had said how horrible this was, and how if he could take her to Germany with him and never look back, he would, and that he would find a loophole as soon as possible, and he loved her and would see her soon, and in the meantime she shouldn't worry about it. She missed her uncle, and was glad she could see him over Christmas break.

Marc watched her rant. "Last time i checked... he was a brilliant man... a real head for numbers... and yet... he has never had good people skills." Marc shrugged. Let his father take his own offense. He rolled his eyes. "He didn't even speak to mah mother... before he sold me off." Marc shook his head.

Marcellus looked over her schedule and frowned. "The only thing we have together is our free period on... Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays... and History of Magic..." He glanced up... "I haven't seen you in that class."

He litterally crossed his eyes at her. "Nay..." He shrugged. "I was trying to learn German about a year ago when my father threatoned to ship me off to an all boy's school. But then my mother came to my rescue and well... I decided it wasn't important... However... ye could teach me." He smiled a genuine smile.

"As 've said... I don't hate you... I hate our situation... but not you."

"Nice guy." she said sarcastically. She felt a little bad for his mother, having her son sold with no one asking her her opinion... At least her mother knew... She frowned. "I usually skip History of Magic, the only way I pass is by doing all the essays." she said, laughing. History of Magic put her to sleep, literally, so she saw no point in wasting her time.

"How much do you remember? I can teach you, but I'm not going to re-teach you the entire language." she shook her head. No way she was going to spend her year teaching some kid she hardly knew German. She frowned neutrally. She wasn't the best teacher, but it would be a hell of alot easier to talk in another language rather than hiding in empty classrooms all the time. "Don't expect me to go easy on you, either. And I don't hate you, but that doesn't mean I don't dislike you."

"I can help you! While i dislike it... im seriously good at That class. "

"Ich remember....uh ... genug" He smiled at himself. "I can understand it better then i can speak it... My vocab is very limited." He smiled. "Well its good to know my Zukünftige Frau doesn't hate me..."

Carefully he stuck out his hand. "Ok...lets shake on it... We be civil... until someone can find a way out of this mess."

Clarissa shook her head. "It's not like I'm not good at it... It just puts me to sleep. Literally." she smirked.

"Great, at least you remember a little. It'll come back to you when you start studying it again. Also, I wouldn't mention it to your father... I'm not wasting my time teaching you something that'll get you pulled out of Hogwarts."

Clarissa reluctantly shook his hand, frowning a little. "Fine." she thought about what he had said earlier. "Also, your father obviously expects us to be boyfriend and girlfriend, which is stupid, but I can act like it to keep up appearences. Are you going home for winter break? I can definately train you to act convincingly by then." she said. It was stupid to think they would instantly love each other, but she was too busy calculating how they were going to pull this off to think about it. "I don't need you getting another howler, it might mention me if you do, and if people hear that they'll start pushing me for answers as to why I was included in it. I'm not a very good liar, I just can't do it. Yes, I can act, but lying just kills me." she was trying to justify her helping him.

Marc smiled. "So there is a heart there after all?" He pulled his hand back. "Fine... I will brush up on my German... And you can teach me how to be a good boyfriend. Deal."

He frowned. "Yes...im going home... although i don't know if they are going to stay in their country home..." He shrugged. "But for the summer they are going to push us together any chance they can get.... So...How about...Fridays...instead of homework...you can give me lessons on being a good boyfriend..." He crossed his eyes at her. "Anyway... i think you should get back to your stuff... wouldn't want to have to pay for anything."

"Acting lessons." Clarissa said, "My parents will probably hold a banquet or something for winter, usually I get stuck with wealthy boys in the hopes that I'll like one of them, but this year I'll get stuck with you. It doesn't matter what home you're at, they'll just make my uncle apparate you in. But my parents are morons, it'll be easy to trick them" her eyes glinted. Obviously she tricked them alot, and enjoyed doing so. "And I'll only be in town for three days, after that I head to Germany with my aunt and uncle. So no worries. And I told my friends to watch my stuff, it's fine." she smiled. Things were actually going better than she had hoped.

Marc frowned. He didn't like the idea he would just be pulled out of wherever the hell he was and dragged off to be with her. HE sighed and glanced at the door. "Fine...Acting lessons... Lets start now... if you are sure your stuff is safe...." His eyes glinted. "Although... I don't know how well you will do..."

"Oh, really? You're talking to a master. Can you cry on cue? I can" Clarissa said, smirking. "And my stuff is just fine, it has a lock on it anyway." she stood, "Alright, that'll be the first thing we work on. You might as well learn to cry on cue if you're going to be around my family, and there are very few people who can say no to someone on the verge of tears." she smiled, thinking of how she had tricked him so very easily at the party. "First you have to think of the absolute worst thing you can think of... For example, let's say I have a dog that I love dearly, which I don't, but for the purposes of teaching we will assume I do, I would think of the dog having to be put down. Get it?"

Marc laughed. Literally laughed completely. "Clare, love... " He smirked in a charming way."Boys don't cry... Girls get away with that teary eyes stuff... but boys...they don't" He raised an eyebrow. "So whats next..."
