Well, this place was certainly different. Gazing up at what looked like it could be some sort of ancient building (though it probably wasn't, but pretending it was ancient made is all the more fun, right?), the Nebelung padded up to the entrance, a little less cautiously than he should have for a cat who had no idea where he was, or where he was going.

Oh well. Worrying about it wouldn't get him any answers, so why worry? Perhaps not a wise approach to life, but hey, it was for the sake of discovery.

With what-could-be-foolish assumption that this place was abandoned, Eli entered, looking around with curiosity. Nothing impressive so far, except maybe a few good bricks he could have fun jumping from. (Had to appreciate the little things.)

Eh. Maybe there some something cool further in!
Deciding he had to find out, Eli made his way towards. . Well, he wasn't sure where, but he was going to find out.

It had been quiet around the sanctuary lately. With Nao traveling and Elijah off doing his own thing, Kevin had been left to hold down the fort. Which was lonely, but it kept him busy with the daily tasks of gathering food, water and cleaning up a bit.

The sanctuary wasn't huge, but it was cozy and warm in certain places. Cats came and went and Kevin treated them just like everyone else--with open arms and hopes that they wouldn't pull anything on him for being generous. He was just lonely.

The sokoke was sitting in the middle of what he assumed to be a former confessional when his ears swiveled, perking a bit and his beads scraping the ground as he put them down. Blinking, he stretched out his legs in an odd puppy-sit position before beginning to get up, holding his beads by the cross and stepping over towards the crumbled hole in the wall to peek out. A traveler? maybe. He hoped so. Or maybe someone familiar. "Hello~?"

Eli stopped as he heard a voice behind him, craning his neck to look over his shoulders as his two front paws sat on top of a step-entrance to a door he was just dying to go through. Who knew what was behind it?

But now that there was an unfamiliar face who'd spotted him, his thoughts were interrupted. A moment or two passed before he even thought to respond, because he really had thought this place was empty and open for exploration. Huh.

Lifting his paws off of the step and twisting around so that he could face the stranger, Eli cocked his head to the side, making sure to, at least for the meantime, keep a distance. "Hi," he started. "Am I trespassing?"

Kevin spotted the larger cat and perked his ears again, one swiveling to try and see if there were others. Didn't sound like it. Though this cat could be a handful if he was aggressive, not that he looked like it at all.

His tail flicked and he stepped out into the open, beads still dragging but Kevin apparently didn't notice the noise he was making, "Trespassing?" He shook his head after thinking about it, smiling brightly. Company~ "This is a sanctuary for stray cats. Our leader isn't here, but--" He thought to himself again, musing, then continued, "You're welcome here if you wanna' stay."

Did he sound desperate? He had a feeling he did. Kevin couldn't bring himself to care, he was a social cat and he wasn't allowed to leave the place alone in fear of other cats raiding their food supply. "I'm Kevin!" He said after a moment, padding closer and finally picking the beads up off the floor, "What's your name?"

Eli's eyes flickered to the beads, momentarily curious as to what in the world they were, but before he had a chance to ask, he was distracted by the explanation of what this place was. It wasn't exactly the ancient ruin he'd been hoping it was, but instead of deciding they just weren't exciting enough to stick around for, Eli figured he should at least consider the offer. Having a place to stay was better than worrying about if he'd have a dry place to sleep that night.

"Kevin, huh? I'm Eli." He smiled, tilting his head to the opposite side, not even budging when Kevin got closer. He seemed friendly enough, so there was no need to scamper off from a threat.

"'Our' leader?" He echoed, glancing around, as if looking for anyone else who might be present. "So you've got other, uh. . ." How should he describe them? "Refugees here?" He couldn't see anyone, so he was curious as to where they were. It didn't even cross his mind that the other cat might be so eager to have him stay because he was lonely, which would have been a big clue.

"Eli~ I like it," he seemed a little straight forward, didn't he? he'd never really learned how to deal with other strays, he'd always met them through Nao who previously checked them out. Smiling, his tail swayed this way and that as the other spoke.

"Our leader, yeah. Well...my leader, this territory's leader," he explained, not even guessing he might be talking too much, "Your leader if you stay," odd invite, too. Way too desperate, Kevin.

"There are only five or six of us...and not all of them are permanent residents. We provide food and water and company and..whatever else territories do," he giggled a bit, tail fluffing, "Where are you from? I've never seen you before," of course not, Kevin didn't get out much. Maybe that's why he had so much energy all the time.

"So are you the only one here right now?" He asked, glancing around once again. That would certainly explain why it was so quiet around here. Unless all of the other cats-- aside from the leader, as he'd already been confirmed as away according to Kevin-- were just freakishly quiet. Or hiding. Whatever the case, the point was that it was quiet.

"I'm from the city," Eli went on to explain, pushing a pebble in front of him so that he made a muffled scratching sound against the ground. "I was exploring," he explained grinning a little bit as his own tail poofed up a little behind him.

"I guess I was sort of looking for some place to stay." Sort of, because he hadn't been looking for a home, per se, but, he could give this place a try. And Kevin seemed nice enough. Worst case scenario, he'd just leave, which wasn't that big of a hassle. "If this place is open, I guess I could stick around." He hesitated. "But you'll have to show me around. Never been around here before." As if it weren't obvious.

Kevin's eyes brightened when the other brought up staying. God he'd been so lonely, everyone was busy and no travelers had come by yet. "I can show you around," he said quickly, bundling up the beads to make them wrap around his neck, having to double wrap it to make it keep from dragging on the ground.

"No one else is around--they're all out doing stuff. Are you hungry?" He offered quickly, all too pleased to help the other out with food and housing and..company. Whatever he wanted. His tail swayed against the backs of his thighs and he motioned for the other to follow him, turning and padding towards the area he'd come from. Food, then get him some water, and they could go look around and find a place for the other feline to sleep.

He really shouldn't be this eager to be around a stranger, but Kevin had always been told to be friendly...so he was.

"I could eat," Eli replied. Wouldn't he be crazy to turn down an offer for free food? Even if he wasn't hungry (though he was), free food was free food. Looking around this place could wait until his stomach was full. It wasn't like the buildings were going to just up and walk away, so food could certainly come first.

Prancing over to to join Kevin at his side (because as of right then, it was the best day ever-- food and an adventure to come), Eli eyed the beads around the other cat's neck.

"So. . What are those?" With introductions out of the way, it was entirely acceptable to ask. The ornament certainly wasn't caught around his neck, considering he'd just seen Kevin intentionally wrap it up around his neck, which only made him all the more curious as to what they could possibly be.

Kevin supposed that no one would really turn down free food. But he wasn't really thinking about that right now anyway. The other cat seemed nice, and he was younger like himself as well. Eli was bigger than Kevin but--that didn't really bug him for some reason. He wasn't really thinking about possible attacks or whatever anyway, that would have already picked up if Eli had the intention to be aggressive.

Looking over when the other questioned the beards, he perked his ears and looked down at them curiously, reaching up to pull them off of his neck, offering it over to the man with a smile. "It's a rosary," he offered, pointing at the cross, "Prayer beads. The church I used to live in left them out one night so I decided to take them," not that they didn't have a bunch anyway, he didn't want to be viewed s a thief--though then again, most stray cats were.

"They're pretty, but they're starting to lose their shine," he mused, shrugging.

Eli took them, holding them up to study them closely to his face. "Rosaries?" He echoed, obviously never having heard the word before. He'd never had the opportunity to. His previous owners had never been religious, so the term had never been brought up around him before. Consequently, "prayer beads" meant nothing to him, either.

"Oh. They're cool, I guess," he replied, not really wanting to state that he had no idea what they were other than a pretty necklace. Holding them back towards Kevin, he fluffed his tail behind him, waddling ahead a bit.

"How come you don't live in your church anymore?" Was it okay to ask? He didn't know, but he'd ask anyway.

Chuckling at the other's reaction to them, he took the rosary back and wrapped it back around his neck. Playing with the cross, he looked down at it, ears perked as they walked.

"I'm still welcome at the church, I go there every once in a while, but when I went to explore I found this place. So I started living here," he loved the humans--his situation was kind of strange, he supposed--but other cats gave him better company. When he really needed food or a shelter he'd go back to the church, but that didn't happen often.

"Plus not all of the humans that go visit the church like me. So it makes it easier for them, too," as to why he was catering to humans most wouldn't understand, "Where did you come from?" He asked right back, bright eyes lifting back up to Eli. He'd never seen him before, and he didn't smell familiar if his eyes had failed him, so..he was curious.

That made sense, he supposed. Even a "church" had no concept to Eli, but he figured he wouldn't understand even if he asked more questions, deciding instead to just nod like he understood. "Oh, okay."

Pausing, Eli seemed a little reluctant to answer. "The city," he repeated, batting at a pebble before he continued with a soft sigh. "My humans were going to give me away a while back. So I left instead." He shrugged, like it was no big deal.

"It's not that they didn't care. They just couldn't afford me anymore," he stated, though he very much, in reality, thought they didn't care enough. If they had, they wouldn't have been so irresponsible with their stupid money. "Things happen, you know?"
PostPosted: Sat Mar 12, 2011 11:33 am

"Oh," his ears folded back a bit, pressing against his scalp as he watched the man's expressions. If it was one thing Kevin could do, he could read expressions and other cats pretty well, despite his energetic and rather..unintelligent? demeanor. He didn't know how to survive on the streets well, but he could figure out other cats. Maybe he should work on other skills.

"Well you're welcome to stay here," he murmured, flicking his tail and bringing him into another small building, this one had a roof--or, at least, half of a roof. And this other 'building' might actually just be a sectioned off piece of the church, even Kevin wasn't sure.

"There," he pointed to some small chests and drawers that had been left behind, he assumed it to be where they used to keep the supplies for communion or..something, because it worked well as a food storage thing. Trotting up to it, he pulled open a drawer and began to dig, "What do you like to eat? We mostly have stuff we can gather. There are berries and dried fish and some fruit..we have some cans of catfood if you can get the top off, I donno where the dry food went.." He mused, crawling up onto the edge of the drawer instead of trying to peek over it, "I donno what that is," he laughed, digging into the back of the drawer. Simple things.

"There's another drawer of food from the humans over there if you wanna look. It's all taken from the market."

"I might as well," Eli grumbled with a sigh. Where else could he go, anyway? People didn't generally take in cats. Kittens maybe, but not cats. Even if they tried, Eli's view of people had become generally pretty sour. He'd just end up leaving in a few days anyway. Staying here, with other cats, seemed like a pretty sweet deal. Especially if they were as generous as this Kevin fellow.

He shook his head, refocusing his thoughts now that Kevin was listing off the various different foods that he was welcome to. All of them sounded good to someone who'd been living off of whatever edible sources they could come across as a new an unexperienced stray.

Stomach letting off a rather embarrassing growl (well, it would be embarrassing to someone else, he assumed, but Eli couldn't say as he was particularly affected be it-- he was hungry), he hopped over to join the smaller cat at his side again.

"I don't care what you give me, as long as I can eat it," he laughed, before reaching for the easiest piece of dried fish he could get to. "You should eat with me. To celebrate!" Celebrate what? Making a new friend, or something, it didn't matter, he just didn't want to eat alone.
