Cleaning. Always cleaning. It seemed to be his whole life these days, so much so that he could hardly remember a time when daily life hadn't included mopping or scrubbing or hoovering or something. The fact that he had been at HQ less than a week just went to show how much patience Aulus had for chores. Perhaps he'd bee spoiled, he considered as he scrubbed at a stubborn bloodstain on the floor of one of the battle arenas. He probably had been: there had always been Milly and Sara at home to sweep and wash and cook back home. The most he'd ever had to do was clean his own room.

He remembered a time when, aged fourteen or so, he'd tripped over his sister's Meowth and fallen through the glass coffee table. The scar from that embarrassing incident was no more than a small pale line on his right forearm now but there had been plenty of blood at the time, all over the white carpet. He'd been sure when he returned home after an unreasonable number of hours in hospital that the massive stain would never come out, but the next day it had only taken Sara an hour to have it looking as good as new. Damn he wished he had Sara in a pokeball and could let her out to deal with this bloody (bitter pun intended) cleaning job. He missed her big goofy grin, and her wild wiry grey hair. He'd never been very nice to her, but neither she nor Milly had ever had a bad word for him. That had probably just been part of their contract though.

Sighing heavily, Aulus pushed himself to his feet and stretched out his cramped muscles. His knees were sore. His hands were sore. His back ached. He couldn't put up with this for much longer, and yet he had no choice. What had he got himself into?

Tortie, who had been dozing on the other side of the arena, cracked open an eye at the weary exhalation. She honestly wasn't too thrilled with life at the moment either - she had begun to enjoy life on the road and found the inside of this building dreary by comparison - but at least she wasn't being forced to scrub at one little patch of ground for hours on end. Opening the other eye and getting to her paws, the Absol stretched luxuriantly before padding over to her trainer in order to nudge him affectionately. She still didn't really know why he'd brought them here, but he assured her things would get better, and she trusted him well enough to return that assurance when he seemed to forget. He wouldn't be scrubbing forever.

Lucas had been feeling much better - thank Arceus. Problems with cognition were minimal and fleeting if at all present, and he was having a much easier time concentrating. He was plagued with random bouts of vertigo, but randomly passing out in transit was a thing of the past. These motions toward recovery allowed him to spend much more time out of bed and much more thought on recent events. One such event around which his mind seemed to hover was the matter of Liselle, the petite little honey and pink Eevee he had a tendency to coddle. Pairing her off against Lance's red Gyarados had reminded him something gravely important: Team Rocket was a criminal organization, and to coddle a pokemon was to render them useless.

It was this realization that found the man proceeding through the halls and into the pokemon gym with a small blue stone seated in his palm, reflecting in the lighter blue of his eyes. Liselle followed at his heel with a certain anxiety in her demeanor; she instinctively recognized the Water Stone and was quite aware of what its presence in her human's hand implied.

Lucas was roused from his musings when he finally noticed the human form that also occupied the room. "Oh, sorry, thought it was empty," he hurriedly apologized with a backpedaling step-- Oh, wait, this was that guy. Aulus. "Oh. Uh. Hey." Well, this was awkward.

Aulus froze in the motion of scratching the back of Tortie's neck when the door opened, and spun around to see...

Oh.

Just great.

A scowl spread across the trainee's face as he regarded the other man... and his eevee. Daww - Aulus' expression softened slightly - wasn't she sweet? Gah! No! Wait! Keep scowling! On command the disagreeable expression returned to his face, and he shrugged his broad shoulders.

"Hello yourself," he replied in tones that would have struggled to be any more underwhelmed. "Come on in if you're going to, and feel free to ignore me; I'm just a lowly redshirt cleaning up somebody else's mess. Again." That really was a cute eevee... What was that in Lucas' hand? Well, it wasn't a gun, so he supposed he couldn't complain.

Humph, Tortie glowered up at the older human, this one again. She did not like this one. For the time being she more or less ignored the e eevee by his side, preferring to concentrate the full force of her dislike on Lucas; if given the order, she was perfectly ready to sink her teeth into his crotch.

Liselle's ears raised and perked forward when she noted the gentleness in Aulus's expression, though they quickly flattened back down when the scowl reappeared. She retreated into her human's shadow, peering out with a nervous olive gaze.

"Hm." He did indeed enter. It was important that he complete what he had come to do before another mission came up, before the little 'vee was thrust into danger once more. But ignoring the other man wasn't a part of Lucas's plans, "Actually, I'd like to have a word with you, if I could." Red uniform or not. Rank superiority had never held much importance to the man anyway.

Hu? Aulus' scowl morphed into one of bemusement as the older man continued to speak. Lucas was being... kind of polite to him. Not psychotic at all. Weird. What was with this new angle?... What did he want? The trainee's scowl changed again as his thought process ran on, shifting to one of suspicion. "Alright," he said after a few moments of silence, "I'm listening."

Maybe that bump on the head had magically shaken the crazy out of him, or maybe that was just wishful thinking. Probably was actually, the man had still seemed to think that the smallest infraction against Claire was a shooting offence while he'd been concussed. Humph. Whatever; he'd hear him out because Claire liked the madman and he... Well he supposed he still felt he owed Claire for bringing him here, even if life was a long string of chores at the moment. Wasn't because he liked her, he didn't mind her, but he certainly didn't like her.

With a quiet sight, he tucked his hands into his pockets and glanced around the room as he tried to find the proper words. He leveled an earnest and straightforward gaze on the other Rocket. "What I said in Ambergris was uncalled for. I apologize." Didn't mean that he particularly liked Aulus, but he had certainly been out of line in threatening the man's well-being for no good reason. "I was a bit stressed out, and it was sort of... the straw that broke the Camerupt's back, I guess." And 'stressed' was putting it lightly. It had taken a mission and concussion to finally drag him away from the suicidal thoughts, as little intent as he had to act on them. It had been an unpleasant period of time altogether.

"...Oh. Well. Fine. Apology accepted." Damn! He could have milked that for... well, for something, he certainly shouldn't just have let it go like that. On the other hand maybe it had been smarter; Lucas outranked him for one, and for another it might be bright not to have the man loathe him should he get that stressed again.

"Not going to be killing me for being in the same vague vicinity as Claire then?" Aulus added. "Just checking my understanding here; got to admit your sudden change of tune has caught my by surprise a bit." Just a little. Maybe the man wasn't totally insane, he knew what it was like to have a temper... but he just snarled and sometimes beat people up when he was angry, he didn't go around making death threats against anyone who approached a given woman.

He wavered slightly, moving to lean against a nearby piece of a equipment - a hurdle or something, it looked like - until the brief dizziness passed.

"No, I guess I can allow that," he said with a laugh and a grin. "Honestly I probably couldn't get away with killing you for any offense but treason. For one, higher-ups kind of frown on that sort of thing, criminals or no. For another, Claire seems to think of you as a friend," for some reason, "and I'm not about to take a friend from her just because of what I think is proper."

"Well that's... reassuring," Aulus said eventually, confused frown back in place. Claire thought of him as a friend? Really? Hu... Well that was nice, he supposed, especially if it contributed to keeping Lucas off his back. It still came as a surprise though, nice surprise or not: he'd just thought that they were getting along with one another because she'd recruited him, or maybe because she was still grateful that he'd rescued Zeus from drowning in his own version of heaven...

It was nice that she liked him. It was. Didn't mean he had to like or trust her in return or anything, which was good because he didn't. She had a nice butt, he was grateful that she'd brought him here, and that was as far as it went. Well, she had cute pokemon too, but that went for an awful lot of people, especially around here. He couldn't wait to get his hands on something that had come out of the labs.

"Well... that's my piece." He toyed with the idea of explaining why he was as concerned as he was, but that wasn't really his place. Not unless Claire said something first, which he couldn't imagine. Instead he turned to the Eevee that continued to cling to his foot, leaning down to her level.

"All right, Lis," he said, addressing the pokemon in full. "You did well against the Gyarados, but I don't want to see you getting hurt again. You understand that?"

Liselle ducked her head in a hesitant nod. She wasn't fond of fighting, but she was even less fond of endangering her human with her own weakness.

"Okay. Here we go." He held out the blue, teardrop-shaped stone, and the Eevee touched her nose to it. The shimmering display that resulted left in its wake a Vaporeon, smaller than average just as the Eevee had been and marked with pink.

"...Nice." As the transformation ended, Aulus gave a very small nod of approval. "She's a nice specimen... Is she out of the labs, or what?" He still didn't like this guy, didn't really fancy talking to him, but he fancied talking to him marginally more than he fancied going back to scrubbing the floor right away. Anyway, if it turned out the newly evolved vaporeon was from the labs, he might be able to find out how you went about getting hold of such pokemon. Probably something you had to earn, had to be a grunt to even be considered for, but it was worth asking all the same he supposed.

At mention of the labs, the newly-evolved Vaporeon gave a fearful cry and dipped back into Lucas's shadow, curling away from Aulus with her head low. "It's okay, Lissy," the man muttered, stroking her head gently. "He's just asking a question. You don't have to worry." He turned back to Aulus, "L-A-B-S is a taboo word with this one. That's where she came from, though, yes. She's an escapee. Wound up in Claire's room through the air vents." And a good thing, too. He couldn't imagine how she had been treated to be so fearful and timid and to react so strongly to the mere mention of the word.

"Oh," Aulus blinked in surprise, "well, I won't use the word then..." He had, Aulus realised abruptly, been an idiot. This was Team Rocket. Of course their labs weren't going to be kind places. Somehow he'd imagined them as a more clinical, high tech version of the breeders' facilities he'd seen. Idiot. Clenching his jaw, Aulus laid a hand on Tortie's shoulders; no way she was ever so much as seeing the inside of the labs if that was what they did to pokemon.

"So... What do they do to pokemon down there?" Aulus asked slowly after a moment. "I've gathered there's cloning to get special colours and markings but... Well, I should've bloody figured there would be more to it than that." He'd been too keen to sign up, way too keen. Maybe he should just have swallowed his pride and gone home... But once he got out of this red uniform life here was going to be exciting, and maybe he could make a difference to some pokemon's lives. Anything he got out of the labs would be treated right, that was for damn sure.
PostPosted: Thu Mar 10, 2011 2:01 pm

"The cloning, for one. A lot of the cloned specimens are sold as designer pokemon to the wealthy, from what I gather. Beyond that, well... They're science facilities. They experiment. Try and find ways to make pokemon more loyal and more deadly." He thought back to the darkly-colored Lugia that had been used against Lance and his team. "I'm not sure if you're familiar with the concept of shadow pokemon, but it seems we're researching a way to bring that back as well. Getting pretty damn close, too, from what I've seen."

He ran a hand from Liselle's head down her back, attracting the Vaporeon's attention. "I don't think it's all absolutely awful, though. Lis seems to have a naturally nervous disposition, though the, uhh... 'science facilities' probably didn't help with that. It's certainly not sunshine, though. Evil organization and all."

"Yea. Guess it should be kind of obvious from the motto..." If he wasn't careful, he was going to let Lucas know that this bothered him. He probably already had come to that. Well, fine, let the slightly less psychic psycho think he was a pokemon loving pansy, what did he care? "Shadow pokemon," he muttered after another short pause, "well if they think they're doing anything to Tortie they can think again; she doesn't need any help with loyalty or with strength."

Well, certainly not loyalty, but he couldn't dismiss the possibility that TR had the ability to augment a pokemon's power, and if they decided they wanted to mess around with Tortie what could he actually do to stop them? Nothing. Damn. Why had he rushed into this? He should have asked for more time... And yet even knowing the risks to himself and to Tortie, even knowing that some of the stuff they were doing was cruel, he couldn't say for sure that he would turn his back if he had the choice. He had a future here. He could make something of himself, and one way or another he'd keep all of the pokemon he acquired away from experiments. He just needed to be careful, that was all.
