All right, I started talking about a video game I wanted to make in the General Discussion thread (pg 735) and felt a new thread would be better. Anyways, I might post the story I have so far, but it's getting lengthy and I'm technically at work right now so, yeah. If anyone is interested in helping with the art or throwing out their own ideas for gameplay that would be fun. The game is going to be for X-box and PC (but you'll probably have to have .NET installed), since I'm programming it with the XNA game library.

I'm having a bit of trouble right now trying to decide how to structure magick abilities. I could design it so that at certain levels of certain classes, you can use AP to 'learn' specific spells as they become available to that class. I like this idea because it allows me to completely customize the spell lists of each of the classes, however, I don't like it, because then all you need to learn all the spells is to completely level a class. I want certain spells to only be obtained through quests or story events. So, another way I could do it is have magick level abilities instead, such as 'LV 3 WHT Magic' or 'LV 4 GRN Magic', then each spell would just have to have a color and power level associated with it. That way, I could make it so you have to go on quests to find tomes of certain spells in order to learn them. However, how would I then customize the spell lists for each class? Like, what happens when I want the Knight to be able to learn the Cure spell, but not any other LV 1 WHT Magic spells?
OR, another idea that just popped into my head, what if instead the abilities were something like '1 LV 1 WHT Magick' or '3 LV 1 BLK Magick' Then, this would still limit some classes to only learning a small number of spells at a given level, while other classes might be able to learn more. Then, it would also allow the player to customize what spell they wanted to teach their Knight if, instead of learning Cure, they wanted to teach them Protect while at the same time, it doesn't give them access to all the LV 1 WHT Magick that a White Mage has access to. Yeah...I think I kind of like that...

I'm currently researching best practices for programming isometric views...They're pretty tricky...

Wow, that's tempting. If I were to use that, I wouldn't have to reinvent the wheel by developing my own menu, sprites, etc. I just worry that I won't be able to get a real complex game with it either; that I'll be limited by their system in some way. For instance: can you create a battle system on a grid with it, or does it limit you to some kind of 'good guys on one side, bad guys on the other' style game play?

Depending on your script skills, anything you want. There are tons of people out there who alter the battle system. I've tweaked it a little but I am a fan of classic turn based so I didn't do anything with that.

Turn based is all right, but I love grids. Having to battle across a terrain adds some interesting tactical flavour to a game. I'll have to look into RPG maker. It looks pretty cool.
Also, I can't make it for the PS3, because as far as I know the PS3 doesn't have an easy way to port home made games to it. Microsoft did a pretty good job at allowing people to just deploy their games to the console (If they're written in C# or C++). Plus, I don't have a PS3. (although, I might get one. Just for FF Versus XIII)
