The one place. Just the one place I could advoid the maddess that is Mr. Junkie Sheen and what does Gaia do? Sheen! Winning! Bring it!
Really, really? mad Because you know those Middle Easterners, Africans, and even Asians fighting for their freedom via social networking isn't important or "LULZ" worthy to talk about about. Nor is this: Case action lawsuit against the US Armed forces about sexual abuse on female soldiers Yeah those aren't hot topics at all but a successful crackhead that will probably either die very soon or turn an Iron man is. I hate this damn site, country, and peers so much sometimes.

At least the earthquake in Japan is getting attention. I mean, it's sad that it took a damn huge earthquake that killed a crap-ton of people to get people to stop focusing on the fact that Charlie Sheen is (quite literally) insane, but at least it is getting attention, and being taken (mostly) seriously.

Yeah I was CNN most of the night and although this person got flagged. I have to agree it does take a major Earthquake to literally shake people up and focus on what's important. The English wedding? Not important to anyone that doesn't pay English taxes and even then still not all that important considering they all just figureheads and don't have any real power. Charlie Sheen? Really not important. Just too bad this doesn't really change anything as next I dunno Lindsay Lonan might steal Justin Bebier's kidney or some other crap and the stupid media circus will go right back to normal. neutral

But that might just be me being annoyed because he's from Canada, meanwhile a lot of the good music to come from here doesn't get nearly as much attention.

You've just expressed the notion of using the internet as an escape. Understand that people are aware of these things, but do not bring it up as they are not topics of comfortable subjects.
It is a heck lighter and easier to socialize over jokes instead of controversial opinions. Why discuss such serious things online and waste effort instead of say, being proactive irl where you'll make more of an impact?

Because the internet can also be a tool for education and pro-activism? I don't think it has to be a one size fits all thing. People can have their "pornz" and still get educated. I don't see why that is such a hard concept.

Yes, and we have the lifestyle discussion + Extended forums to accommodate that. Don't know if they're popular though.
And there are other sites. Just on Gaia, people are here to waste time and entertain than be serious. Or so I would think so.

True enough but I don't see why "serious" topics can't be hot either.

Especially when you consider that Gaia is PG-13 site, aimed at preteens, and the original concept was to be an anime and roleplaying site. While it may have grown out from there, that is still its roots. It is a site for children. At most, you could only argue the morality of bringing to the attention of children a promiscuous crackhead, but the media has done a stunning job of that already. It is also a company. It needs to make money, and the best way is to grow in popularity in order to bring in more "customers". Following the fashionable hot topics is an easier draw than civil rights.

Ah, didn't think of the company bit. You would think that the avatars items, not the forums aspect of the site is where they'd tried to profit from more. But it is certainly worth noting, that the forums are what draws people to the site. Should Gaia present itself as a gathering place for news and porn at the same time, they'd fare very much like a political battleground... Full of distracted soldiers. A group consisting mainly of young adults and below. Who probably don't have the most profound reasons for supporting their causes. Which would turn everything into a neverending war as no one can rationally prove of disprove anything.
But that's just me speculating. And I'm a cynic.
