I saw this movie called Pom Poko by Hayao Miyazaki the other night, and it was about these shape-shifting tanuki trying to stop ppl from ravaging their habitats and building new cities over them (which they felled at). The movie was basically about tanuki but they kept mentioning the foxes.
Then I got to thinking and remembered this game I played where this group of tanuki teams up with the main characters to battle the foxes.
My question is have these two species of mysterious animals always been rivals? The movie said that there r stories relating to the two.
Anyone have any examples of these stories???

Hm, well I remember when I was alot younger, reading story books where sometimes there would be the badger who would trick the fox, so maybe the concept came from children's books. (Or from feudal stories as well.)

I root for the tanuki, who is smothered beneath the fame of the kitsune! Though, perhaps in Japan, the two are fairly equal. I do not know...

Tanuki are the silly carefree drunken partiers of the Japanese folklore. Kitsune are seen as sneaky, cunning and sometimes treacherous...I like Kitsune more...but mostly its cuz I'm a fan of foxes. But I DO like tanuki too.

I'm actually more of a fan of a particular fox--the fennec (desert fox). I've heard that foxes are regarded as cursed by Japanese superstition.
