For once, Ren had not been dreaming of blackness.

This was an unusual thing; as of late, all of his dreams had been blackened nightmares that seemed to go on the entire night. No matter how hard Ren ran, he could not seem to escape them. Usually he awoke several times a night, if only to make sure that his friends were still in the room with him, that they were all right, that nothing had happened to them while he had been trapped by the shadows. It comforted him to know that they were there with him, and usually when he went back to sleep after checking on them, his dreams would go back to "normal."

This time, when Ren awoke, it was abrupt, but not unpleasant. He was not drenched in sweat or shaking, and he was not feeling nauseated. Instead, surprised, he blinked a bit in the early (early; it was not even light yet) morning, vaguely confused. He felt warmer than usual, and, glancing down, there was something in the bed with him.

Or rather, someone. Jove's head was resting on his stomach, eyes closed as he lay there, as still as...well, a ghost. Since the boil did not need to breathe, he scarcely did, and Ren watched him for a moment, sound asleep. Reaching out, he gently patted his soft hair, fluffing his ears before putting his arm back around him, wriggling a bit to get more comfortable. Then, glancing at the clock (so early!), Ren let his eyes flutter shut and promptly fell back asleep.

It had been a long day yesterday. She'd had classes, some homework, visiting with her closest friends. Somewhere in there a phone call to home had been made. And then, the tiresome job of the day: cleaning her room. No she was not a slob. No her room hadn't been that bad (at least at the beginning of the day). In fact, she was quite proud at how nice her room normally looked. Unless minipet world war five had taken place.

At some point while she'd been out with the others, the horde had escaped. Or more likely had been released. This of course meant that Callix had not one but seven mimics to torment him. No wait. Five actually. Jill and Frank had been too busy fighting with one another to pay attention to the batling. Even Austin ended up getting in on it. LW suspected his tail had been chewed on one too many times. So when she had gotten back to her room, expecting to go stay in Gabrian's room, she had walked in on chaos.

Austin had two mimics pinned under his front paws. Frank and Jill were chasing each other and trying to rip each others tails off, effectively catching clothes and pillows in the way. Callix had Billy Bob attached to his tail while the other last two mimics darted around below the shrieking batling. It had taken a good hour to get everyone calmed down and with a groan the she-wolf had spent a while cleaning the mess. They had even ripped one of her pillows, JACKDAMNIT!

By the time her room was cleaned and had order restored, LW had passed out on the pillow she'd been sitting on. And then, only about three hours later, it had all started again. How in the hell the horde kept getting out, she didn't know. But they had been in tantrum mode because she had scolded all of them.

"That's it!" LW danced away from the terrors and walked towards her door. Something latched on to the end of her pajama shorts and the she-wolf glanced down to see BB. Of course it was him. "Oh no you don't!" She pulled him off as he snapped at her fingers before she proceeded to throw (sort of gently) the mimic and slip out her door, slamming it shut. For a brief moment, she just leaned against it, trying to will herself to move. Man she was tired and...

"Ren's room." That was safe, right? LW moved quickly and silently down the halls, stumbling once or twice until she reached her best friends room. Hopefully the hour wasn't too horrible. It was light out at least. Probably early morning (not Jack awful though). Slipping into his room quietly, she started to head for the pillows...and froze. Blinking, LW had to pause and stare. Something...was off. Violet gaze narrowing, she took a good look at the bed. There were golden ears and strands of hair draped across a familiar face. He really was cute when he slept like that (which no, she wasn't going to tell him). That was normal. Her eyes traced down his body and stopped near his stomach. There. That wasn't normal. What...who...it was not a scent she knew.

And...it was cute. Really really cute. And no, it was too much to ask her to keep quiet. She had to say something. "KITTEN! What is th-" she'd taken a step and her foot hit something fuzzy. The rest of her sentence was squeaked loudly as she fell to the floor, landing next to Rhys. Her tail swished once. Twice. And she just gave up, laying on the floor. MINIPETS!

Jove had been sleeping ever so soundly, snuggled against Ren's warm body in his white nightshirt, little hands cradling his head. That night he hadn't heard a single mimic-related noise, just the reassuring breathing of his living friend, and it seemed more restful than any sleep he had gotten since arriving at the academy.

But as peaceful as he had been, the loud squeak in the room was enough to wake him with a start. Fluffy ears perked up as he sat bolt upright, glancing around the room with big, worried eyes. The pup looked well and thoroughly sleep-tousled, with his fluffy hair sticking out in unbrushed tufts all over, and the confusion that hit him was overwhelming on several counts.

One, he was not in his own bedroom. The walls were warm and colourful where his own were blue and muted, and there was a bit more clutter and a lot less dog toys. It took a minute to remember he had spent the sleeping portion of the prior evening in his friend's room. Close on that realization was the second source of confusion. The squeak, and the scent. There was no fooling his nose, the dog-like scent that had always been a part of Ren's room had gotten stronger. Whatever it was, the faint smell was clearly from something that frequented the room often.

That was when he noticed the body sprawled on the floor. THAT was it.

The ghost pup ducked down, cowering behind Ren's body with nervous eyes and ears tucked back. Maybe... Maybe the stranger wouldn't see him.

It was not the yell that woke up Ren, but the loud crash as something tumbled onto his floor. He jerked awake, blinking, pushing messy strands of golden hair from his face, legs tangled in the bedding.

"Wha...." he said groggily, one arm still around Jove, although the puppy was pressed down against the bed, ears flattened against sleep mussed hair. Jove's luminous eyes were wide, and he looked...scared? Ren brushed a hand over his head.

"What's the matter?" he asked gently, and glanced around the room, trying to figure out what exactly had crashed. Everything looked relatively normal, except...Ren peered over the side of the bed. Sure enough, there was a familiar redheaded wolf lying there, right next to an equally familiar lepus, who was looking rather disgruntled that his sleep had been interrupted. Rhys let out a snort and hopped a few feet away, back to his bed.

Ren blinked again. "LW?" he said curiously, moving over to look down at her prone body. "LW, darling, good morning. But whatever are you doing on the floor?"

It was still relatively early, but at least the sun was up now. Ren glanced back at Jove, still curled up and looking very anxious under the covers. He put a reassuring hand on the puppy's back, patting him affectionately.

"Don't worry," he said, and gave his friend a smile. "It's a friend. Nothing to worry about, little one."

She rolled her eyes at Rhys. He shouldn't have been sleeping in the way. It wasn't her fault...Alright maybe it was. She wasn't exactly running on all cylinders right now. So maybe she had stepped too close to the lepus' bed? Oh Jack she didn't know! What she DID know was that she had managed to wake both of the beds occupants.

"No, some other wolf." The she-wolf retorted back. Groaning, she sat up and rubbed at her head. "Morning. And I didn't make it to the bed. That's why I'm on the floor." Her gaze flickered to the pillow pile. "And the pillows were too far."

The earthy and forest scent hit her nose again and violet eyes locked on the small body clinging to her best friend. It was that curiosity of hers that started to take over as she stared. Fluffy ears were flattened on top of his head. And there was a very very faint yet distinct canine scent mingled in with the others. Well now. What was this?

Tilting her head in a purely canine manner, she regarded the small one. Her tail thumped softly against the ground and an urge to jump on the bed and sniff at the unknown boil kept growing. But...something held her back. Barely. It was in his body language. He was scared. That of course, struck at something else in her. The wolf. Oh candlejack! He was a puppy, wasn't he? Instinct. His fear was prodding at her instinct as a wolf (and female wolf at that!) to protect and take care of the puppy. Violet eyes softened and she smiled at the pup.

To Ren, "I need a break." She said with a tired sigh. "From the psycho's that reside in my room."

The pup's ears stayed pressed back for a minute or so, his wide eyes darting between his friend and the strange ghoul with the wild, wolfy scent. Ell Doubleyew? LW? They seemed to be conversing easily, and Ren didn't seem startled... Besides, that scent had been in the room to begin with. They definitely were friends.

The pup's tail stopped bristling in fright, and although he was still using Ren as a protective barricade, slowly his ears perked back up into an attentive expression.

Then it hit him. Here he was cowering in Ren's bed, hiding behind the gryphon like a real scaredy cat. Jove quickly realized how vulnerable and small that made him look. So he sat up straight, puffed up his scrawny little chest, and feigned a confident expression. Best not act like a child, he thought, snorting at Ren as if to say "I wasn't worried, not even for a second."

Ren lifted an eyebrow. "Oh, okay," he answered her, somewhat flippantly. "I guess I thought you were some strange redheaded friend of mine by the name of LW. GUESS I MADE A MISTAKE."

He tossed the shewolf a playful wink to show that he was merely teasing her, and then glanced back at Jove before speaking again. "You could have just stepped around Rhys, you know," he told LW conversationally. "It helps if you avoid tripping over things when you're trying to make it to the bed."

Now he was just being obnoxious, of course, and Ren couldn't help but laugh, shaking his head. "The mimics getting to you again, or was it Callix and Austin this time?" he asked her, gaze flickering back to the puppy behind him. Jove's expression shifted and he moved out a bit, sitting up straighter, a vaguely disgusted expression on his face as he looked at Ren.

"Hey, don't give me that," Ren said mildly, amused by the puppy's sudden "confidence." "I was just trying to make sure you weren't scared by this one - " He gestured to LW. " - here. Who, by the way, happens to be my best friend."

Sitting up a bit further, Ren shifted positions, cross-legged on the bed now. "LW," he said to the shewolf, and indicated the boil beside him. "This is Jove. He's a new friend of mine. And Jove," he added, patting the other on the head. "Jove, this is Little Wolf, or LW. She's my best friend. She's kinda like you." Ren's gaze shifted to the shewolf. "I think he's a foxfire," he said, as a way of explanation. "I know he's a puppy of some sort, but I haven't yet figured out exactly what kind yet."
PostPosted: Sat Mar 05, 2011 4:33 pm

The pup amused her. He'd been pretty scared before but now he seemed ready to act confident and show they them he wasn't, in fact, a scared little puppy. The she-wolf smiled at him before rolling her eyes at the gryphon. "Har har. Maybe your lepus shouldn't lay in the way." She sniffed and tilted her chin up at him. "Or I need several hours more sleep." This was said a little softer and again, her eyes traveled to the pillow pile.

"Try the horde plus Callix and Austin." LW stretched her arms above her head until she felt a nice pop. "I still have yet to figure out how they all got out." She glanced back and forth between Ren and the puppy as her bestie spoke and the small one stayed silent. Did this mean that no, he didn't talk? Or couldn't talk? Well, body language was easy enough to read. At least to her it was. It was how she communicated in wolf form some of the time. And this one had some spark to him. An adorable spark.

"This one is pleased to meet you, Jove." The look she gave the puppy was nothing but pure warmth and her relaxed (for the moment) body posture was meant to convoy she meant him no harm. The gryphon though...the look she sent him said he was fair game.

"Foxfire, huh?" She tilted her head and sniffed at the air. "Wouldn't be able to confirm that unless I could get close enough for a better smell." Stretching again, she got to her feet, slowly, tail flicking behind her. Yes she was tired. But she blamed Ren. That playful look and the fact he was teasing her as much as she teased him had pulled until the devilish side of her took over. "That, sadly, will have to wait." This was murmured as she moved towards the bed. One could claim it might have been closer to a prowl. Violet eyes looked to the pup once and she gave him that warm look. "Forgive me, pup." Winking at him, her eyes flashed playfully as she turned to face Ren. Then she tackled him, clinging in case they tumbled off the bed. Which wouldn't be too much of a shock.

"Your best friend thinks you are obnoxious! And I blame you for my horde, kitten." She may have started out wanting to win this little 'match', but she was too tired and Ren was warm and she gave up pretty easily. "I think my tail got gnawed on a few times too."

Jove batted away his friend's hand, there would be no more head patting now that there was a ghoul wolf in the room! At least she didn't seem inclined to baby him the way his friend was. And what did he mean about being being like her? He could smell the wolfiness, and from the way she walked and the way she expressed herself, it was clear she had some canine link. His tail gave a half-wag in greeting. And, of course, he sniffed the air heartily to get used to her scent.

Wait, what? Did he hear something about mimics? At that the pup's ears folded right back to where they had been in the first place, despite his attempts to stay aloof. She had a whole horde of mimics? He frowned and tugged on one of Ren's wings, as though asking "please say this isn't true?" Okay, so he was very much worried now, there would be no playing confident this time around.

Unfortunately that was when LW had timed her pounce, Jove's ears had barely swivelled around to hear her apology before the leap sent him squealing and diving under the covers. By the time things settled there was only the tip of a poofy tail was visible, peeking out from under the sheets next to the vaguely child-sized lump of bedding.
PostPosted: Sat Mar 05, 2011 5:25 pm

Ren was feeling pretty good, surprisingly. Though he had stayed up late eating cookies with Jove, LW was here, and so was the boil. It made him feel stupidly pleasant to know that he had people that wanted to see him, wanted to come and see him. "My lepus happens to sleep where he sleeps," he said dryly to LW, sliding a sideways glance in her direction and giving her a pointed look. "You of all people should know this, darling wolf."

A small tug on his wing made Ren twist around to glance at Jove. The puppy had a small, worried frown on his face, blinking large teal eyes up at him. "What's wrong?" Ren asked, brows drawing together in confusion. He looked over at LW, then back at Jove, tilting his head as he smoothed his hand down one fluffy ear. He couldn't interpret the worry, and for a moment Ren just looked at him, attempting to discern - oh.

"The mimics?" Ren asked, raising his eyebrows. "Oh, don't worry, Freckles, they're in LW's room. They won't come he - aaaacckkk!"

He had not, to say the least, expected LW to fling herself at him, though he probably should have. With a half strangled screech Ren found himself, quite suddenly, with a shewolf partially in his lap, LW's arms around his waist as he lay half off the bed. Ren let out a shout of laughter, squeezing the shewolf in a tight hug.

"What was that for?" he protested, his head hanging upside down. "I am not obnoxious!"

It took a bit of struggling, but he managed to push himself partially up, enough that he could see a small, Jove-sized lump underneath his covers. Ren shoved himself upwards further, tugging on the little bit of tail he could see, and then flopped on top of the lump, giggling like a little kid.

"LW's just saying hi, little oneeee woahhhhh!"

Ren's balance, slightly disrupted, since he was attempting to not fall off the bed, lost itself completely as he shifted positions. With a mildly panicky squawk, Ren, along with the blanket wrapped Jove, and the clinging LW, tumbled off the side of the bed. He found himself with a mouthful of fluff from Jove's tail, a little puppy on his stomach (still wrapped in a quilt) and a wriggling shewolf.

"Erm," said Ren. "I'm kinda squashed here."

The she-wolf gave an overly dramatic sigh. "Alright! I know that. I just...didn't see him." LW couldn't even win at this either! Sometimes, she wondered why she bothered to even try and argue or challenge the boils in the first place. They always won. It so wasn't fair!

Her tail mimicked the pups when he gave her a half a wag. She gave him a more impressive one since her tail was bigger. But it was still the same gesture. LW really didn't want him to feel uncomfortable around her! He was too cute for that. And she had been behaving and not pouncing the pup to cuddle with him. Ren though. Ren she could do that with.

"Because you asked for it." She snickered. "And yes you are!" Her eyes closed briefly as she inhaled his scent, surprised they hadn't fallen off the bed. And the other scent. Canine. Definitely canine of some sort. Not wolf though. And because she felt like being just as obnoxious as her best friend, she didn't plan on moving unless he shoved her away. His movements made her open her eyes again and glanced over where Jove was. Whoops. "Sorry pup. Wasn't my intention to frigh-" Her sentence was cut off as they DID fall of the bed this time. Another squeak escaped and she clung as the three fell to the floor. For a second time in the she-wolf's case.

Her face was smashed into feathers, thankfully not floor. That would have just added on to how this morning had gone. LW hoped Jove was alright. And yes, she was wriggling because her arms were pinned under the gryphon. But better yet...

"OH MY JACK!" LW gasped, trying to get in air. "Did...did...REN!" Oh she was dying. The tear inducing, can't get in any air, hearty type of laughter. "DID YOU JUST SQUAWK?!"
PostPosted: Sat Mar 05, 2011 6:28 pm

Jove's eyes went wide and he yipped loudly as his tail was tugged, and the next thing he knew, he had been pulled right off the bed by the older pair's struggling. The poor puppy didn't know what to think, the older wolf had seemed okay, and he had grown used to Ren's childish snuggling and teasing, but this was complete chaos!

He thrashed around on Ren's stomach, once again giving the gryphon (along with LW) a good taste of his bony knees and elbows, oblivious to the laughter and general merriment that was occurring on the other side of his quilted entanglement. Like a ghostly little horseshoe crab he righted himself, and scurried under Ren's bed, blanket and all.

Once he was safely hidden under the bed, he was able to breathe a metaphorical sigh of relief.

Lying there with the other two mostly on top of him, his legs still half up on the bed, Ren let out a sigh, pushing his hair back away from his face. "I beg to differ, little Miss Wolf," he said to LW, in a mock outraged tone. "I am never obnoxious. Ridiculous, yes. Outrageous, certainly. However I prefer the term elitist snob to 'obnoxious.'"

He flashed her a teasing wink, and then gave her shoulder a friendly push. "Shush," he said, grinning. "I did not just squawk, it was just your imagination - oof!"

Jove was scrambling around like a scared puppy, his elbow digging into Ren's stomach. He got another mouthful of fur, a leg in his face, and then Jove had scrambled away, disappearing underneath Ren's bed. He pushed himself up, propping himself up on his elbows and casting an amused glance at LW.

"What're you doing under there, Freckles?" Ren asked, and shifted positions, moving to lie on his own stomach. He crawled over to the bed and lay there peering underneath it, his head resting on his hands. Jove's wide, luminous eyes were glowing in the darkness, the only indication that the boil was under there. Ren did not keep really anything under his bed; it was mostly a few pieces of clothing Rhys had decided to push under there. Ren's follylop, Usa, also made her nest under the bed - at the moment she was pressed against the far side of the wall, looking petrified.

"Did I scare you?" Ren reached a hand out to the puppy, glancing up at LW and smiling. "Come on out; I'm sorry we startled you."
PostPosted: Sat Mar 05, 2011 7:19 pm

LW just kept her face against his wing while she attempted to get control of her laugher. Not that it was going very well at all. At least until she heard the words 'elitist snob' come out of his mouth. oh he did not just say that. Those were not words she associated with him. That went to the other gryphons. "Ooooh, you are asking for it!" She chuckled into the soft feathers.

The friendly shove had her carefully moving about to roll off of the gryphon and the pup. Then a knee nailed her in the shoulder and she blinked in surprise as she fell to the side. Jove seemed to be having a mini panic attack with the first instinct being to flee and get to cover. Poor thing. Looked like their usual rambunctious behavior would take some getting used to. LW stuck her tongue out at Ren and flicked his nose. "That sooo was too a squawk, Turkey! You just wait until I tell Gabrian." A pause. "And Alessa." She wouldn't. But he didn't need to know this.

She watched as Ren moved to lay on his stomach and look under the bed. Oh it was too tempting. He glanced up and smiled at her, LW returning it with a sweet smile of her own. As soon as he looked back to Jove, the she-wolf shifted forms and the red wolf flopped on top of the gryphon, half laying on him. Big cheesy canine grin on her face she gave his cheek a big slobbery kiss before sticking her head over his shoulder. Her nose wrinkled as she sniffed at the pup, eyes bright. Definitely not a wolf. But there was some familiarity to it. Maybe Ren was right in his assumption.

"You have another form too, don't you?" She asked him. Her tail wagged in a playful manner, but she was quite content where she was, waiting for Jove to decide when he was ready to come out.

Jove flinched away reflexively, but after a second he took the hand so Ren could pull him out. Of course, Ren wouldn't let anything bad happen to him, the gryphon was just being rambunctious as usual and it was completely safe to crawl out and sit with them. The self talk was slowly working, the pup relaxing and even giving his tail a tentative wag.

At least he was relaxed until LW's canine head suddenly appeared over Ren's shoulder. Then he jerked his hand back with as much speed as he could manage, withdrawing shyly back into the blanket wrapped around him. Big eyes watched LW with a startled expression and then lit up with understanding. She really was a wolf! A living one, yes, and certainly not a dog, but they were kind of similar in a vague way.

He nodded slowly, hunched safely in the blanket that smelled like his friend and the cookies they had shared last night. It might take him a minute or two to calm down, but at least being in a safe, dark place was one of the better ways to do it.
