 Welchenos had made a very interesting discovery! He already knew that if you pawed at sand, it would move around. This was called "digging," and it was easier to dig in sand then it was on other kinds of ground.
He had also discovered if you dug a big enough hole and chased a crab into it, the crab would fall in. Sometimes the crab would get stuck, but sometimes it would crawl out. If it was stuck though, you had to put more sand in the hole so one side would be smoother and easier to get up.
Today's discovery was that if you accidentally put too much sand in the hole and covered the crab with sand, it could still get out. It just dug itself out, like the sand wasn't even there.
Naturally, Welchenos had to see if this worked with anything else. Maybe one of his sisters would be his test subject.
First though, he needed to dig a really big hole.

 Kishima had decided to go exploring a bit on his own. but it didn't take long for him to start to get bored though, since exploring by himself was only fun for so long. so he decided to find someone his age to play with or maybe find one of his siblings. lucky for him it didn't take him long to spot a white and pink cub. what confused him though was the other cub was digging in the sand and he couldn't help but sneak over. with a tilt of his head he sat down as close as possible while avoiding getting sand flung at him. "ummmm what are you doing?!"

"I'm digging a real deep hole," Welchenos said over his shoulder. "It's gotta be at least as deep as me so I can put my sister in it and see if she can dig her way out like the crabs do. It's important to know."
Welchenos was very focused on his digging, and forgot his manners. What was important right now was the hole, and the experiment. Although later he would need to go find one of his sisters.

Kishima was majorly confused but shrugged it off since the other cub said it was something important. "oh................" he frowned for a minute before a small grin was on his face. "can i help?!" tail whipping around, he figured he might as well help since it was important. "i can dig really good too!" to him if helping this cub meant gaining a friend, he wanted to do it. "my name is Kishima, what is your name?"

"Welchenos," he said shortly, spraying sand behind him. "You can help me dig, you start on the other side and we just have to make it really deep and really big."
Welchenos was making quite a little heap of sand behind him. Crabs were skittering out of his way, back and forth, desperate to evade his sand piles.

"cool!" diving right into the digging with out a second thought. he ignored the crabs that skittered about to run away from them. " do you always do this to your sister?" he was curious if his new found friend did this often to him family. "and are you sure she wont care?" still digging, he just couldn't resist asking questions.

"Well, no," Welchenos hadn't actually ASKED his sister if he could bury her in the sand but he was sure she would be willing to do it for his investigation and all. "I don't think she'll care, it's just sand. And it's for the greater good. I mean, we should know if lions can dig their way out of sand like crabs can. It could be important."
Welchenos just hoped they could get the hole deep enough before someone came along and asked what they were doing with it. Grownups never seemed to think his investigations were worth while.

"i guess your right." he didn't bother to question his new friend anymore about the fact they were digging this hole to see if his sister could dig out. he now moved to a different spot at the hole so he could dig even more. after a few moments, he had to stop to take a breather. "this is hard work......" in taking a deep breath, he eyed his friend. "how much deeper do we need it?"

Welchenos eyed the piles of sand around the hole. "I dunno yet. It does look pretty deep already."
He paced around the edge of their hole, his tail curled around a leg. "Well the sand piles are almost as tall as us so the hole should be about as deep as us. Maybe I'll just jump in and see."
Welchenos slide into their hole and sat down. The sides came up to his nose.
"You know, I bet we don't even need my sister. You can just bury me in and see if I can crawl out, and then my sister can't get me into trouble."

(@_@ sorry i took so long my muse was dead. btw XD i love these two, they so amusing together)
Kishima wrinkled his muzzle in thought as he debated on going through with what his new friend requested. "hmmm....." he then glanced around to see if anyone was near before looking down at Welchenos from the edge of the hole. " well...........i guess theres no reason we can't." now grinning, he purposely patted softly at the top of Welchenos' head. "stay like that and i will fill it but i will try not to bury you head."

"No," said Welchenos, "you have to bury my head. The crabs go in all the way, so I have to get buried all the way, too. I can hold my breath while you bury and as soon as I'm in all the way I'll start digging out. But if I don't make it out after about a minute, you dig my head free, ok?"
Welchenos hunkered down and took a deep breath in.

Kishima didn't exactly want to bury his head but since welchenos was persistent about it, he gave a nod. "alright.....but only a minute under." he then started to dump the sand onto of Welcheno's and could only hope their little experiment didn't go wrong. the last thing he wanted was to lose a friend when he just got to meet him and so he was care not to pack the sand down and at so that it would be easier to dig him out when needed.

Welchenos took a deep breath before his nose and mouth got covered in sand and counted off until he felt his ears covered. Then he started wiggling around to try and get out of the sand. He couldn't really dig, because he couldn't really move his legs, but he did succeed in knocking some of the sand off the top of his head and wiggling up enough that his face stuck out above the sand.
"Lions cannot dig themselves out of the sand because the sand gets in the way," Welchenos said decisively. "It's too slidey and all you can really do is wiggle."

Kishima gave a sigh of relief when Welchenos came to the surface but had to laugh when he couldn't manage to get out of the hole. "yep and now we know better." grinning, he purposely laid down and batted at Welchenos' head. "shall i dig you up or leave you?" snickering, he had no plans to leave him in the hole but he had to have some fun with it.

Welchenos scrunched his nose at Kishima, and continued wiggling. "I guess dig me out unless we can think of another experiment to do with a lion buried up to his neck in sand. Nothing comes to mind, I'll be honest."
Also, the sand was kind of itchy along his tummy, but he wasn't going to complain about that. What kind of scientist complained about their experiment conditions?
