Sine he had moved his den closer to the rest of the pack Achilles had found opportunity to not only spend time watching and keeping up with the majority of the pack - but spend time with Pen as well. For the most part the good parts of the move outweighed the bad and Achilles couldn't say that he regretted the move.
Spending time with Pen was the main focus this very minute in fact and he was enjoying a relatively peaceful walk with the Queen about the inner areas of the Pack, sure it might not be quiet a nice as spending time alone where they could converse without the need to watch what was said for fear of ho might hear it...but there was something alluring about watching a Queen be well..a Queen. Pen wasn't seeing to anything in particular at the moment but Achilles could still observe the differences in her as she walked amidst her subjects.

It was these types of moments that Pen cherished greatly. When she could spend time with Achilles, when there weren't any duties that needed her immediate attention, though that could change in an instant. In the middle of the pack territory it was different than had they gone for a walk alone out by the border, here she still needed to maintain her full power over everyone including Achilles. But during the times when they were truly alone, if a Queen could ever be truly alone, she often treated him more as her equal.
The chill in the air made the walk seem more pleasant as there was no sun relentlessly beating down upon their backs but it was also just cool enough that if they wanted to stay warm they would need to keep moving. A good majority of the pack was busy with various errands, though some were around the dens and they had stopped here and there to chat with those wolves before moving on. Achilles was good about not butting in or stepping out of his place when they did so. Glancing over at him the Queen gazed upon her splotchy mate. "Everything seems to be running smoothly, shall we venture a bit further away from the dens?" With everything in order she could leave the main area and not be immediately tracked down to tend to something important - or at least she hoped so.

Achilles was indeed good about not butting in when his comment would for the most part be ignored - but that didn't mean the wolf wouldn't voice any opinions he had later, when he and Pen were in private - Achilles was pretty well aware of when to voice his concerns so that they would have the most impact. So he listened and observed and made mental notes about just what he thought about everything that was said. If the sisters could hear some of his mental thought they'd throw atrocious hissy fits...which really just made his inner dialogue all the more amusing to the mottled wolf.
When Pen suggested that they venture further from the dens Achilles gave her a subservient response "If that is what my Queen desires"...Though his eye carried just a hint of amusement as he said so, today it seemed Achilles was choosing to be amused by playing the role of obedient slave rather then being chafed and irritated by it.

Well if Achilles wanted to play along like a subservient male then she would play the role of the dominant female. "You Queen also desires a great tribute to her, something to show your loyalty to her and the Sisters." She told him in a somewhat commanding voice, though it was clear by the glint in her eyes and the smile that eventually crossed her maw as they ventured further from the dens that she had been joking. They continued to walk along for a while, not venturing too far from the dens but far enough where they could have a bit of privacy. "I think you enjoy playing a slave a little too much." She teased him, though had to admit that he could play subservient when needed. Orithia was exhausted from her fight with Enyo, it had taken much of her strength to overcome her much larger and powerful sister, and while she had won based solely upon Enyo tripped and falling, it was still a victory. She was fairly certain that her sister would not try anything like that for quite some time, though she hoped it would never come to that. When she had left Enyo laying in the forest Orithia had walked tall and proud, but now her head was low, the limp was worse and her adrenaline from the fight had faded out. Blood coated her leg under the wound to her shoulder, which was still bleeding now, though less severe than before. It needed to get looked at that was for sure, but she didn't want the entire pack suddenly jumping to her aid.
So she had taken a longer way home, trying to avoid the places where she knew some of the Sisters would be this time of day. The dens weren't far off now but Orithia had to stop and rest. Lowering herself down on the ground she did her best not to move her injured leg too much and let out a heavy sigh.

"Mmm" Achilles replied with a thoughtful look on his face "I shall have to think of something worthy of you" He stated as they walked away together, they had only just gotten out of earshot of the other when he said what he truly wanted to say "By the gods Wolf..I've already given you five daughters..what more could you want?" Though this remark too was tinged in amusement.
"Yes well...did you not see the look on some of they're faces? Half of them were in awe that you could keep me so well to heel the other half were just confused all to hell that I was behaving so superbly. Either way is good - keep them all on they're toes" He told her with a small chuckle.
He might have continued on but a subtle shift on the wind brought a scent which made his hackles rise and he paused to peer into the woods suspiciously, surely Pen had smelled it as well but he voiced his concern anyways "There is blood on the air, wolf blood"

Penthesilea smiled and then quickly turned her face neutral. "Well that is for you to figure out, my slave." Making sure to emphasize the slave part, even though she was fairly certain that this was the first time she had ever referred to him as that. Giving her head a nod. "Yes, I suppose it does keep them on her toes. And I must admit it is entertaining to watch you grovel at my paws like that. Perhaps you should do it more often."
And then she caught the scent of blood in the air, though Achilles was the one to actually say it. "We had best see whats happened." And with that she took off, following the scent of blood, a pit in her stomach forming as she did so.
Bloody hell, this was not how she wanted to spend her day. Orithia knew that she needed to get up, needed to keep moving. She had lost a good deal of blood and laying here considering a nap was a bad idea, if she fell asleep and no one found her, or worse Enyo found her, then she would certainly not be waking up again. Clenching her jaws against the pain Orithia pushed herself up off the ground, though a whine escaped her as she put weight on her injured leg. Damn, just when she had been healthy enough to keep up with training nearly every day Enyo had to go and tear apart her shoulder, now she would need to miss even more training to allow it to heal. Just keep walking, you're almost there, she told herself and started to slowly limp forward again.

Achilles sighed grimly and followed after Pen as she chased the blood smell, Achilles was no stranger to blood and carnage and this pack wasn't either if the stories he'd heard had some truth to them - but the scent of blood mean that they're peaceful walk was almost certainly over and depending on what they found at the end of the trail they could be over for a good while to come.
He was swift enough to keep up with Pen easily and he took a moment to recognize the dangerous pair that they made - even in this pack - perhaps more so because he was a hidden strength that was easily over looked. Such reflections and admirations however were brought to halt as a whine cut through the air, he pivoted in mid stride to angle towards the sound certain that Pen had mirrored his move. The whine had a familiar sound to it and as they drew closer Achilles bit back a curse - Orithia's scent was mingled in with all that blood, he sped up and burst through the foliage side by side with Pen to see Orithia wobbling about on three legs.
Achilles eyes narrowed but he didn't stay around to ask what had happened - he left Orithias care to Pen, having only come to a stop long enough to assess the situation Achilles bolted past his daughter and into the woods behind her - he knew a fight wound when he saw on and Achilles was determined to find the culprit. Following Orithia's trail was easy she had left blood spattered everywhere.
Enyo had laid upon the ground for several long minutes after her sister left, regaining her breath and her strength. When she felt as though she could stand she did so though her legs felt shaky. Orithia had walked away quite proud of herself Enyo recalled but as she followed her sisters path she found she had not done so for long.
Enyo came across places where her sister had stopped to rest, where the blood had pooled and her tracks were decidedly staggered and unsteady. It seemed the damage she had caused to her sister was quite substantial and while she knew she wouldn't be capable of finishing her off at the moment weak as she was that didn't stop her from having fleeting happy visions of Orithia bleeding to death on the way home.
Of course those visions came o an abrupt halt when her father came barreling out of the woods to bar her path with a decidedly angry look on his face. Enyo tried to hold her head up and demand he step aside - he was a slave after all and she ought to be able to command him about the same as any other slave - father or not...but her recent shaming and a slight waver in her own capabilies kept her from being able to do so.
She sighed in a weary fashion and let her head hang in defeat. "Hello..father"
Achilles..was not surprised. He was angry..but he wasn't surprised. A part of him wished Enyo would act upon that glint of stubbornness he saw lurking in her eyes so that he might give her a lesson about trying to boss him around...but she seemed thoroughly defeated already. "Daughter...you have some explaining to do..." He told her quietly "Come with me" He motioned with his muzzle down the path and waited for her to join him before walking back the way he had come.
Enyo cooperated up until she smelled her mother ahead and then she dug her heels in and cowered on the ground refusing to budge. Achilles was forced to take her by the ruff and drag her unwillingly the rest of the way before depositing her in a pile before her mother.

Runningright besides Achilles Penthesilea was ready to confront whoever had dared trespassed upon her and injured one of her Sisters. But a sudden horror reached her mind as she realized the closer they got to the source of the blood the stronger Orithia's smell became. No! Putting on an extra burst of speed Penthesilea came crashing through the bushes with Achilles to see Orithia limping, the wound on her shoulder quite severe. Before she could say anything Achilles was on the move again, she let him go off in search of who did this, right now her main concern was Orithia. Quickly she moved over to daughter. "Easy now, rest and let me take a look at that." And when Orithia did so she looked upon the wound. It was fairly deep, but it was clean and should heal properly and completely, though she would be certain to give her daughter some herbs to make sure an infection didn't settle in.
"Who did this to you?" She questioned, there could potentially be a number of wolves who would want to attack Orithia and attempt to weaken the pack by killing the heir.
Oh this was not good, for a while Orithia was thinking the worst possible wolf to find her like this would be her sister, but the sudden arrival of not only her mother but father as well made her cringe. Then father left, probably off to look for whoever did this to her. Submitted to her mothers wishes and sat down so her wounds could be looked at. The question asked of her was one she did not want to answer, and just as she went to say something father reappeared dragging, quite literally, Enyo with him. Well now there was no avoiding the answer, she looked straight at Enyo and answered her mother. "I was officially challenge...by Enyo."
The sound of trashing caught her attention and Penthesilea turned her head to see Achilles bringing their second born daughter into the small clearing by the scruff of her neck. This didn't make any sense, well it did the signs had been there all along, but did Enyo truly attack her sister? Orithia's words seemed to confirm it and the way Enyo was standing there also spoke a great deal. Instantly anger flared in Penthesilea's eyes, and leaving Orithia's side she quickly padded over to where Enyo was. At full height, the fire of hate in her eyes the Queen was a very intimidating image to behold. "You dare challenge your sister, your blood sister?" She yelled, not caring if anyone saw her doing so, she was the Queen, she needed to punish wrongdoers. "I should throw you out of my pack for doing such a foolish thing. You could have killed her!"

Achilles paced away from Enyo as Pen approached - he'd brought her back and now by pack law it was up to her mother to deal with her. Turning his head he gave Orithia a considering look, she was an intelligent wolf - he'd always known that and small and quick in her training but for sheer strength he would have placed his bets on Enyo. Strenght was not always enough to win a battle however and he gave Orithia a reassuring look before turning his attention back to Pen as she screamed at Enyo.
He had seen this coming for quite some time but it still made his heart hurt - it was hard to side with either one in the long run. Enyo had been doing what this pack encouraged to some degree and Orithia had merely been the unfortunate being born first in this little drama. They were both his daughters and either way he saw nothing but a terrible outcome. Listening to Pen and Enyo only half heartedly he turned his thoughts inward.
Enyo cringed as her mother approached cowering on the ground as though she might flee of her own accord at any moment, refusing to look her mother in the eye...until she yelled at her. Enyos fear melted away and she looked at her mother with bitter angry eyes "I thought that was the whole point of a formal challenge" She pointed out in typical snide teenage fashion "It should have been me! I should have born first..she shouldn't have even survived this long..she's always sick, her growth is stunted..how is she going to keep the pack strong when you step down? Some other warrior will tear her apart and your line will end!"

"And yet she managed to defeat you just fine." Penthesilea pointed out quickly to her daughter, Orithia may be smaller and had been prone to sickness all along but that fact was that she had obviously survived the fight, not only that she had one it. But the way she went on about how she should have been born first and that any other challenger would tear Orithia apart was too much for Penthesilea to deal with. Raising her paw with lightning quick reflexes she struck Enyo across the nose. "Better my line end with Orithia's death than to have you, a stuck up little brat running the pack. You could never be Queen, you only seek power, you know nothing about the politics of running a pack."
Her eyes ticked over to Achilles for a moment but he seemed to be willing to let her handle this by herself and actually seemed somewhat distracted. "I shall have you banished from this pack - "She had went to say more but Orithia cut in.
Orithia's eyes widened as she watched her mother yell at Enyo. Really it had been wrong for Enyo to challenge her, but anyone could challenge the Queen or future Queen for their title if they so wished. When the Queen struck Enyo Orithia cringed and then heard the word banishment. This was when Orithia managed to get to her paws and quickly hobble over to the pair. "No mother!" And paused for a moment worried that she would be struck as well for interfering, but her mother simply stopped and looked at her. "I accepted the death challenge knowing the consequence of it. I could have killed her....I tried to...I had her in my jaws and I almost did. But I decided on a punishment worse than death for her, she must live with the shame of her defeat within this pack." Technically if her mother wished to overrule that decision she could but Orithia was hopeful that her mother would show Enyo some mercy much like she had done.

Achilles was torn, Enyo despite her boastful words did not have the skills necessary to survive well without the pack, oh sure she could fight other wolves just fine but she'd been coddled, spoiled and would be little more then a target of opportunity for any wolf who found her outside the pack.
But she must receive some sort of punishment, otherwise the two would heal only to fight again..and again until Enyo succeeded or Orithia grew tired of granting her mercy.
The sound of Pen's paw slapping Enyo down was loud in this small clearing - or perhaps it only seemed loud due to the circumstances. in any case it had sent Achilles mind running back into his past..where he found an idea and after some more careful thought he decided that yes...it might just work...
"Make her a guard..specifically Orithia's guard" He suggested after Orithia herself asked for Enyo's mercy. Pulling his eyes off of Enyo he looked to Pen "It is the ultimate punishment that she must protect something she wanted to destroy and she shall have to do this duty above and beyond any other guard. She's already shamed to fail in something else would be more then she could bear...and perhaps in time they will grow to appreciate one another."
"Not because of skill" Enyo defended herself - she would have won that fight if it hadn't been for that stupid stick..she just knew it but before she could say anything else her mother was shouting again and pain blossomed along her snout as her mother struck her - Enyo was shocked...her mother had never done anything like this to her before! Couldn't she see that she'd only done this for the betterment of the pack?...But no Enyo could see that she didn't, Orithia had always been her favorite and her mother couldn't see past that to the truth.
Having been rocked back by the blow Enyo licked some blood from her muzzle though she refused to do anything more to sooth the sting though her eyes squeezed shut in shame as her sister spoke, when her mother announced that she would be banished Enyo trembled slightly - she had heard stories of the packs beyond this one and she didn't like any of those stories..not one bit. But it didn't seem like the worst punishment to be dreamed up because then her father spoke up and Enyo's jaw dropped and she remained silent in shock.

Those words that Orithia spoke, they showed exactly why she was the better future leader of this pack and not Enyo. Orithia knew when and how to show mercy, yet instill that mercy with shame when appropriate. Her eyes ticked to Achilles, and for the moment she believed his idea was the most ridiculous thing she had ever heard, but then again her mind was still raging with anger so it was hard to think clearly at this very moment. She did the only thing she could do and paced a bit weighing the options carefully.
The Queen knew that Enyo had little skill to survive outside of the pack other than her skill in fighting, but fighting can only get one so far, but having her protect Orithia seemed like an even greater risk, yet it seemed like the perfect punishment now that she thought about it. Bringing her paws to a stop she was ready to make her verdict but first there was one thing that needed to be said. "Let me tell you something, daughter. Skills are not everything in a fight, you also need intelligence." And she paused to reach up with her paw and tap Enyo on the head, though this time gently. "It is this intelligence that you lack in a fight, you try to simply overpower your opponent, but you do not think. That is one of your greatest flaws. War can be won with words, not blood. We may be warriors but that does not mean the only way to get something is by shedding blood." Lowering herself down on her haunches she looked between Achilles and Orithia and then settled her gaze upon Enyo. "I should banish you. The law states that one who does not win the challenge but is granted their life must be removed from the pack. However, you sister has shown you mercy, a concept that you yourself know very little of, and I respect her judgment. As for your punishment, you will become your sisters personal guard, you will protect her with your life and if I ever see or hear anything that says otherwise I will personally rip you apart. Is that understood?"
Things just went a bit crazy. Did father truly just suggest that Enyo become her personal guard? Yes it would be the ultimate punishment but really, did he think she wouldn't try this again? Before she could question this though mother began pacing and Orithia sat quietly awaiting her reply. When it came she was both relieved and shocked. Mother had indeed extended Orithia's mercy and allowed her to stay within the pack, but as her personal guard. Her eyes widened a bit but she made no argument against it, her mothers word was final and no amount of begging or fighting out it would change that. Still the idea of having Enyo to order around was a bit amusing though she maintained a neutral face as she turned her attention to her sister awaiting her reaction.

Achilles could see that his suggestion wasn't at first - received with resounding joy, but then he hadn't expected it to be - Pen was far to angry to think it through logically but Achilles was sure his idea would work. Was it the perfect situation? No..but then there was no perfect solution to a problem such as this. So he remained silent as Pen paced and ignored the looks Orithia and Enyo gave him.
Pen ruled after his suggestion of course once she'd had time to think it through he had been sure that she would draw the same conclusions he had and she had. "You are both young" He told his daughters " And prone to the mistakes of youth, your mother will not be so lenient the next time" He warned.
Enyo flinched slightly as her mother raised her paw again - perhaps she had decided to simply kill her rather then take her fathers suggestion - which when she thought about it..death might have been more merciful then that, but no the tap was soft and mother seemed only to have a desire to instill some sort of wisdom. Enyo docked her ears slightly and listened, still far to shamed to think about rebelling any more as her mother continued to speak.
She was quite sure he mother would end up banishing her - and risked raising her glance to stare at her when she choose to take fathers suggestion. Her jaw worked as a million and one refuse rose to her mind but in the end the only thing that she did was lower her eyes and speak a quiet "Yes mother"

Her eyes ticked to Achilles for a moment, she didn't think she was being very lenient this time, yes she was letting her daughter keep her life and remain in the pack but even that was not very lenient. Next time...if there was a next time, then these girls would get to see first hand the damage that their mother could inflict, daughters or not she would not withhold the severest of punishments if it happened again. "Take her home, she is to remain in the den." Her gaze slowly turned back to Enyo and she stood, raising herself to full height, towering over her hunkered down daughter. "This is only the beginning of your punishment, I will see that you learn the true meaning of sisterhood and respect, lessons that you have clearly not taken to heart yet." Then she glanced at Achilles again. "And summon Yakut, she will need to tend to these wounds"
With her orders given Penthesilea turned to tend to her other daughter. Orithia had endured a fight for her life, wandered through a good chunk of the pack lands to get here and then sat through this entire ordeal without once complaining about her injuries. "Come, we will get you home." Moving beside her daughter she help her stand and allowed her to use herself as a balance point to keep her weight off of the injured leg.
Orithia oddly felt sorry for Enyo, having the carry this shame, being forced to serve and protect the one she has wished to kill and now she would also need to endure what would likely be countless hours of lessons about respect. Orithia had gotten plenty of lessons on respect in the past, they were a part of her diplomatic training to better prepare her for her future role and now it seemed Enyo would get those as well. Whether they were the same lessons or not she could not know. She chanced a glance over at her father and sister, and then looked at her mother, grateful for the help in getting back to the den. How badly she wanted to rest but Orithia knew before she could rest she would need to have her wound cleaned and looked at by Yakut and by then word would have likely spread throughout the pack of today's fight and the aftermath of it.

Achilles arched a brow slightly at Pen's domineering attitude and the way she issued orders at him like he was just another common slave, inwardly his own temper boiled...just a bit, but she was angry and worried he reminded himself so he merely shook his pelt and any irritation off with the debris while Pen helped Orithia back down the trail.
"Come along then Enyo..we'll take another path home" He told her because frankly the tension of traveling alongside Orithia and Pen at the moment was not something he wanted to deal with.Besides this way he could talk with Enyo a bit.
Enyo watched as her mother and sister left before rising her her feet and following after her father - her head and tail were low, her steps little more then sluggish no matter how much her father harried her along - and even then she knew that they would arrive back to the dens well before her limping sister.
None of this was fair - her entire life wasn't fair.If only Orithia had died as a pup - none of this would have happened...and now to make matter worse she would have to make sure Orithia lived long enough to actually take control of the pack..and she had to listen to her father who was currently nattering on about the importance of family and other such things. She knew that already...she did but you were supposed to put the betterment of the pack before your family right? Thats what she had done..she was sure of it.
In any case he was glad when they reached the dens and she could crawl inside to curl up in a ball and ignore everyone, she barely noticed when her father left to fetch Yakut and likely follow along to check up on her sister.
