The sun was barely over the horizon, so the park of Camphoreon City remained in shadow thanks to the buildings and trees surrounding it. Normally this park would be bustling with tourists and city dwellers alike, playing and relaxing in the greenery, but the darkness deterred all but the most persistent of people. One of which was a purple-haired woman accompanied by an Espeon.
Nyla was one of the few people that was a regular of the park during the early morning, but not anytime else. Her patrols lasted from sunrise to sunset, and sometimes even beyond that. That left the time before the day started the only time she can enjoy nature. And she would rather enjoy nature before heading to work and spending hours in the loud and rambunctious city than diving into the chaos directly.
So here she was, jogging with her most trusted Pokemon beside her. Nyla was wearing earbuds that played an upbeat song while she ran. She was focused on the paved path in front of her but she did let her eyes wander from time to time.

It was very early to be up, but he'd slept very badly. The motel he'd finally settled on had been a dump, and the couple in the room next to him had kept him awake for hours. He'd felt as though he'd barely closed his eyes when the fire alarm went off; apparently some drunken idiot had set it off for fun. He'd been able to get half his money for the room back, which was something, but it didn't change the fact that he was tired and cranky.
With noting better to do, he had left the scummy district behind and wandered back to the more pleasant area around the park. He'd bought himself a coffee and a pastry; now having finished the pastry and half of the coffee he was feeling both a little less tired and a little less grumpy. At least it was looking to be a nice day, and at least he was alone save for Tortie.
With his staff swung casually over one shoulder and his coffee held in his free hand, Aulus wandered along feeling fairly good about life, all things considered...
Oh great.
As he took in the jogging figure his mood soured instantly, and he came to a halt to treat them to a glare. He was not prepared for other people to exist in the world after the night he'd had. He hoped the woman would see him glaring and decide to take a different route.

The first thing Nyla noticed about the man in front of her was his staff. Her mind immediately turned away from the music and the jogging and put itself on alert. What sort of person walked around with a bo staff? Granted, it wasn't illegal to do so and it didn't mean that he was using it to beat people up. He could be going to some sort of martial arts class. A very early one.
But then he glared and her, and Nyla gave him a quizzical look in return. Did she do something wrong? Was there something on her face maybe? She tried to tell herself that he was the sort of person that wanted to be left alone and dislike being around other human beings. But she couldn't help herself and jogged right up to the man.
"Is there a problem mister?" She asked, pausing in her run. Daybreak the Espeon stood by her side, looking at the odd colored Absol with caution.

Well great, that hadn't exactly been the intended effect. Rather than answering right away, Aulus took a long slow sip of coffee. "It's too early," he said eventually, in the tones of one who finds the world to be an excessively tiresome place. "I spent the night in a horrible hotel, was kept awake by the 'happy couple' in the next room, and was woken up far too early when somebody set off the fire alarm. This coffee was overpriced, and the boy serving it kept wiping his nose on his sleeve. This whole city is full of sycophants, snobby young executives, and hopeless people whiling their sad little lives away in a job they hate... Which problem would you like to hear more about?" There, if that didn't make her want to hurry to move along he didn't know what would.
Tortie had stopped a short distance behind her trainer, and was now studying the espeon beside the other trainer. She could take it to pieces. She wondered if she'd be allowed. In the meantime, she gave the psychic type a disdainful look and sat back on her haunches.

"Oh." Was all Nyla could say at first. She didn't expect an answer like that. "Um, well if you're going to stay in area longer I can point you to some better hotels... At least ones that aren't going to make your day miserable. I can't help with your hopeless people though. Those are everywhere..."
She gave him a smile even though the man wasn't smiling himself. It wouldn't do if both of them were unhappy after all.
"Have I'm introduced myself? My name is Nyla, and this is Daybreak."
She indicated the Espeon standing next to her. Daybreak glanced up at her trainer and then resumed watching the Absol.

"A right little ray of sunshine you are," Aulus snorted, clearly referring to the smiling woman rather than the solar-named psychic type. "You can call me Aulus," he went on, "and my Absol is Tortie. As for nicer places, it would be nice if I could afford them; you'll have to recommend a job to me before anywhere decent to stay." Hell, maybe the woman would have a decent suggestion; you never knew your luck. Actually that was a lie, he did know his luck, and it never dropped good opportunities in his lap.
"What're you doing up so early anyway?" the red-eyed man quizzed as he took another sip of his coffee. "You don't seem to be in a rush to get anywhere, which is odd for people around here; haven't you got a depressing job to dash off to?"
As the humans spoke, Tortie gave a lazy yawn and lay down on the path. As it seemed they were going to be here for a while, she supposed he might as well be comfortable.

"Ah. Well." Nyla tilted her head as if she was reconsidering something but continued on anyway. "There's a motel a couple blocks south from the central Pokemart, called the Whimsimotel. It has a stupid name but it's clean and cheap. But if you don't have a job then it would get pricey..."
Her smile flickered when Aulus mentioned her 'depressing' job. "My own job isn't depressing, though it's tiresome. Especially since I get to stay in the city all day without a breath of fresh air. That's why I'm out here so early. I get a quick jog and a bit of greenery in before I head to work."
She almost laughed when another thought came to her. "If you're looking for a job the police force here is always recruiting. Hehe."

Hu, now that was kind of interesting. An active job, out and about with Tortie... But he doubted the police would take too kindly to his attitude or his temper, and anyway, he didn't want to be the guy enforcing all of the petty laws of society that he personally despised. Still, his options were pretty limited at the moment, so he couldn't afford to totally veto the idea.
"I'm not really sure my face fits a police uniform," Aulus said after a few moments of thoughtful silence, wearing only a very small scowl this time. "I'm perfectly aware that I look like trouble... Still, I'll think about it." He'd have to be pretty desperate, but it sounded better than most other work he could get around here. Anyway, maybe if he really got stuck he could get onto some kind of training thing where they fed you and gave you a place to sleep... If that was how such things went, he honestly knew nothing at all about how the police went about recruiting and training.
"You find it a satisfying job then," he added, still frowning slightly, "I guess it must be a lot better than some office job, but don't you get tired of dealing with petty idiots day after day?" He knew he would; litter-bugs and weekend drunks, plus of course all the actual serious stuff. He supposed he'd be good at that though; he could certainly take pretty well all comers hand to hand, and they probably taught you to shoot at some point during training... Worth thinking about; the idea of Officer Aulus might seem pretty laughable at the moment, but it would probably sound a good deal better when it was that or slink home in disgrace.
