Here's a quick background on me:
I play lead in a try-outs only ranked 3rd in the state of New Jersey High School Jazz Ensemble, we go everywhere: Paris, London, Japan, etc. I play lead in marching band, one that gets invited to play all over the world, and has been state championships countless times. I am third chair (missed second by one point, first by 1.5) in the honors wind ensemble. I have the best range in the school, as a junior. Now while that sounds all fancy there is one thing I ABSOLUTELY SUCK AT......

I CANT COUNT OR UNDERSTAND RHYTHMS, EVEN IF IT KILLS ME. I screw up quarter notes, just to give you an idea. Unless I hear the piece before hand, or remember what a set of notes sounds like from a former piece, I can't understand the rhythms. And in the rare case I do, I play it at around 200bpm, earning myself the name "Speedy Gonzales" from my band director.

Now Band Nerd Guild, be honest, what are you really bad at in band.....

dont be shy fess up............

I couldn't count to save my life. I'm good at listening, and coming in when I'm supposed to, but if i'm playing alone, i always mess up. xd

And i can't memorize music, either. It took me half of marching season to memorize the entire show. gonk

I have trouble memorizing. I memorize better by ear.

I used to have trouble transposing concert pitch to clari pitch. Like, I knew Concert F scale started on G and had 1 sharp, but if you asked me to play a G scale Bb pitch, I couldn't figure out how many sharps there were. I had to make up a rhyme to memorize it: No cats, a frog gut, Two flat bugs dead, three flat european angels and four flattened apple ends.

Can you make me a rhyme to help me memorize the F# and C# scales I have to know tomorrow? (I'm a trumpet player, I hated transposing for the longest time lol)

I am really bad a scales and all the technical stuff. I can do rythms, dinamics, counting, but I am clueless about scales. I had all the damn sharps and flats. It's had to memorize all the fingering for the clarinet. I mean, I know them, i just can't know them in time to play an eighth note scale.
Plus, I am clueless about pefect thirds, fifth and all that crap. xp

I'm about to cry. 6 sharps and 7 sharps, and then 6 flats and 7 flats, plus their relative minors. We have to know all 12 scales, most double octaves.......kill me....

Expressing more emotion through solos...I play oboe, so it happens a lot. xd I do well with the slower, more expressive stuff, but a lot of the time in the faster pieces I just don't know what to do with it. Like Armenian Dances last year- I think I'd be a lot better with it now, but I had no idea what to do with all the solos in it last year. It's a fun piece, but a lot of that stuff was stuff that I couldn't really lose myself in in comparison to other stuff that I play.

Oh, and double tonguing and vibrato will be the death of me.

Playing in unison, there's a reason why I'm the only 1st Flute in my band, and it's not because I'm the best (far from it most likely). D:

Hmm...Well to start off with, in High School, I was in orchestra band and I was the only mallet percussionist which was really awesome since I got awesome parts and got to switch from instrument to instrument every few measures which was a fun challenge. In jazz band I was the pianist and in marching band I played bass guitar mallet percussion on the field, then bass drum and snare in the stands. I made it to county band for mallet percussion and timpani my Junior and Senior year, then County Chorus for alto my Junior and Senior year. I was told I could have made into the Distract Band for mallet percussion if I actually had the guts to try out, so I really regret not trying now... My High School choir tried-out and made it into the choir that sang for Jamestown's 400th anniversary in Virginia. They basically had the best high school choirs from each state unite and sing for the President, Queen of England, and other really prestigious people so that was fun. Our marching band got to play in a parade at Disney and our Choir got to sing there... Our marching band won ACC's for our class this year, of the coarse the year after I graduated sadly ): But I'm still extremely proud of them all! XP
Sadly, the community college I go to doesn't have any music programs! D: But when I transfer to a bigger college I'll be trying out for the bands and choir once again! My college needs to have music, since music therapy will be my major. razz

My biggest problem with music is actually that I put way to much emotion into it! I play the music how I think it should be played, not the composer. razz So sometimes I add dynamics that aren't supposed to be there, I change the tempo, add extra notes, trills, take away some notes and make it more simpler or defined... I really change a song a lot.

My strong point though is sight reading and playing by ear. Once I know how a song is supposed to sound, I can figure it out fairly quickly. If you give me a piece of music and give me a few minutes to look it over and play it in my head, I can play it. (:

I can play really well considering that I started learning saxophone in 6th grade [which meant learning everything that the other kids learned within a two year time span, was condensed into about two months.], as well as everyone else, actually. I'm in 9th grade now, and I think the only troubles I really have are dynamics and articulation. And apparently, I don't play loud enough. sweatdrop I had a listening interview thingy, where we play band music and all the scales in front of her, and she kept having to tell me to be LOUDER. Like, WAY LOUDER. I walked out of that 10'x6' room with a terrible headache that day. =P I'm really good at playing by ear though. Sometimes, I'll be listening to the alto part for a song [cause they get pretty cool parts in pieces now. >.>], and I'll end up going home and figuring them out by memorization. It's sorta cool, I guess.

Oh, and another thing: I can't play by myself in front of others to save my life. I get horribly nervous. xp

I have better intonation on the piccolo than I do on the flute. neutral I'm also terrible (but improving) at sight reading, and can't solo well (in concert band or jazz band). I'm also struggling with transposition (although that's been improving since last year) and I really don't know much about music theory...

Counting will be the death of me. On violin and trumpet I can count and keep up with no problems. On flute, piccolo or chimes I can do one or the other. If I'm counting, don't expect me to play at tempo or get more than half the notes right xp

Sight reading will also be the death of me. I can manage, if I have to, but if I can hear the piece at least once through I can play it with mostly no problems.

Thankfully I am out of school and in a very large marching band that mostly plays 'Louie, Louie' and other 60's-80s pop songs which are surprisingly easy normally.
