Ever since Lerath had finished growing and moved with his rider to their own private weyr, the pair were scarcely seen. V’al’s attention was focused almost solely on training Lerath, and except when their paths crossed at wing practice, he had little interest in his weyrmates. Lerath, of course, was always sociable and curious, but flight restrictions had left with adolescence, and he yearned ever toward the horizon. Thus, V’al appearance in the dining hall yesterday morning when he came looking for a party to join or form for a transplant expedition was somewhat unusual. After a bit of searching, he met and ate with Xan and F’ren, making the plans to head out the following day. Xan was a bit older than him, but he didn’t mind having a more experienced rider along for the journey – and Opeth’s non-flighty attitude could be useful. F’ren was more his age, but he seemed self-disciplined sort, and Lerath had nothing ill to say about his Toulonth.

It was the next day then, that V’al met them in the weyrbowl. He and Lerath arrived geared, and when they all seemed ready the ecstatic blue (who was so endlessly curious about what this would be like!) launched eagerly into the air, and after circling a few times for altitude, blinked Between.

F'ren wasn't too sure about those he'd been partnered up for this jump, things had been bad for him the last time and that had been with a couple of people he'd known rather well. Soto say F'ren was slightly nervous was an understatement but Toulonth was there with him always since the last jump, and her constant support was something F'ren cherished. He prepared as best he could, he even thought he recognised the bluerider and his Dragon but he couldn't put his finger on it. His memory wasn't the greatest anyway but he'd prepared, drawing down what Optheli had suggested before.

The time had come and F'ren checked and rechecked the leathers and where they were to be jumping to, time and time again that morning. When he thought they were finally ready he hugged Toulonth before mounting and they took off, blinking Between themselves and hopefully this time, they'd get it right.

"Well, time to go then!" Xan swung herself into place on Opeth's back and strapped herself down, her usual easy-going grin swapped for an indescribably excited one. They were timing! They were off to save the world! Heck yea!

"I don't want to go to the past. It won't be any better than the present. I expect the Thread will be falling. We'll probably get lost, too, and everyone will laugh at us. That or they'll get lost and die and we'll be blamed. Stupid hatchlings."

"Hush it, you," Xan chided as she did her final checks, "they'll be fine, and we'll be fine, so buck up and try to enjoy this!"

"I will not enjoy it," Opeth insisted as he leapt into the air, "I would rather be sleeping, or swimming."

"Maybe you can swim for a bit when we're there," Xan offered, calling to mind the jump they needed to make. "Read?"

"I suppose. I still think this is a bad idea."

"Of course you do!" the black-haired woman beamed, and pulled down her goggles. This was going to be amazing! "Let's go!"

"Did we make it?"

"Of course we made it," Opeth huffed, angling his wings to swoop gently towards a convenient clearing, "I am disappointed that you doubted me."

"You were the one who said we wouldn't get here," Xan retorted, another massive grin spreading across her face as she looked around. "Wow. So this is the past, hu?" As the drew closer to the ground, the rider raised her goggles to get a clearer view around. "Awesome," she said aloud, that enormous grin still plastered across her features.

"It looks just like the Southern Continent in our time," Opeth retorted sulkily as he landed. "I was right too," he added with a hint of smugness, "those idiots got lost."

Xan's mood plummeted, the grin vanishing from her face in less time than it takes to between. "Oh shards!" Opeth was right; where were they? "Shells, I hope they're alright," the blue rider muttered, peering up at the sky in the hopes that the pair of them would suddenly appear... But she couldn't just sit here. The others might turn up any second, or they might never make it at all. She didn't want to think about that. "It looks like the Thread passed over not long ago," Xan observed in dull tones, unstrapping herself from the flying harness and hopping to the ground, "I guess I should grab some of these grubs while they're still active." The others would be alright, right? They'd make it in the end.

Xan couldn't say exactly how much time had passed since they'd arrived, but it had been long enough for her to fill several pots will wriggling grubs. Giving a weary sigh and wiping sweat from her brow. Where were they?

"Lost between. Killed by Thread. Caught by oldtimers." Opeth's morbid predictions came in lazy tones; he was enjoying the warmth of the sun on his hide, and fairly peacefully resigned to the fate of the others. If they were alive they'd make it in the end, if not there was nothing he could do about it. "Where's your usual laid back attitude?" he asked of his rider with a yawn. "It's usually you telling me to 'chill' and let things work out."

"This is different," Xan snapped, "this is people's lives." She, as the most experienced rider on this mission, ought to have done something.

"There is only so far you can hold their hands," Opeth responded, more gently this time. "Don't blame yourself if they are lost, but don't congratulate yourself if they make it."

"Believe me," Xan muttered as she fetched another pot and stooped to gather more grubs, "I won't."

((Interlude Journal Entry))

Just then, far over head there came a distant pop of displaced air and a pair of immense wings so dark they were near black appeared. Lerath circled from above and, spotting Opeth’s form far below, gave a bugle of greeting and began to glide in. His voice was more urgent than his gentle descent and he broadcasted to Xan as well as his blue. I’m here with V’al. We are both injured but I am worse off and will probably land poorly, but don’t worry as it is not dire. I do not see Toulonth and hers, is she here?

V’al gave Lerath solemn advice to shush and concentrate on the landing. Lerath’s right foreleg was badly marked with threadscore up to his shoulder and his foot had a packed blanket roped to it like an oversized mitten. V’al had turned his shirt into a makeshift sling for his right arm, which had been lightly scored as well. His hand was an ugly mess, but he had no trouble making it move with the help of numbweed. The sling was merely to keep the tender wound out of the way for now. Their landing, as Lerath predicted, was somewhat botched as the blue refused to put any weight on his injured foot and he stumbled, dropping awkwardly on his rear to keep from pitching forward and throwing his rider.

Journal

F'ren and Toulonth emerged from between low, landing almost as soon as they appeared. "We are here, F'ren is hurt!!" Toulonth broadcasted as F'ren slid from the saddle to stand shakily by her side. "Is everyone here? are they all safe?" he asked her, his good arm slung over her neck, that she held low, her eyes whirling slightly grey in her worry for him as well as her own cuts and gouges paining her.... they shared their pain and didn't need to talk about it to each other.

"Oh Thread burnit all!" Opeth had passed the messages along to her, and she felt another stab of guilt. Should've taken better care of them, she'd been so blasé, but other people had paid for it. She was the most experienced. She should've done better by them.

"The have both landed alright," observed Opeth, who had roused himself from his sleep, "more or less alright anyway. No need to worry." Despite his words, the blue dragon's eyes were distinctly yellow. Maybe Xan was right, they should have made sure the younger ones were prepared. "Mine is coming," said Opeth unnecessarily, for the black haired women could be seen rushing towards them, "how badly are you hurt? Should we leave the mission and return to our Time?" If it was bad enough, he and Xan might have to leave them and return with a healer... But they had both flown in, and both more or less managed to land, but then again trips through time were so taxing... They would tell him how they were soon enough. Stupid hatchlings, how had they managed to get themselves lost and hurt themselves and their riders?

"Opeth, I swear, if you say one word to them!" Xan didn't attach an actual threat, her tones were enough to quell any urge her lifemate might have felt to grumble at the pair. "It could just as easily have been us," she added as she arrived beside Lerath, "we've more experience with between in general, yea, but not with Timing. It could've been us." That was a sobering thought, but it did ease a little of her guilt over the whole mess. She didn't really know more than they did; comparing standard betweening and Timing was like comparing flying to flying against the Thread.

One handed, V’al was going to have some difficulty getting down on his own, but Lerath was too concerned with Toulonth arriving now to crouch and let him slide down. The blue keened at the green as she suddenly appeared and landed a short distance away. His eyes whirled in sympathy and concern at the ichor crusting on her wings.

Hey, let Xan help me so she can check on her, okay? V’al reminded him a tone softer than normal. Lerath rumbled embarrassment and dropped his shoulder, belatedly passing on Opeth’s question. “We’re threadscored,” he called as Xan approached, and threw his leg over Lerath’s neck. “It’s ugly but we’re stable. Could stay, but – help me down real quick –“ He slid down with Xan’s assistance and winced at the jolt of landing. “-but go help F’ren. Go!” He waved her off and moved to help Lerath sit and then lie down without hurting his limb.

Toulonth had, in fact, been one of the first greens Lerath had given chase to, and he arched his neck to watch her as he settled on the ground. What is wrong with F’ren, and are you okay?

“Shush so we can help. Now rest,” V’al said in some exasperation. After helping His settle, he headed as swift a pace he could manage toward Toulonth and F’ren. In his absence, Lerath grunted worridly and asked Opeth, You and yours came alright, yes?
PostPosted: Thu Mar 10, 2011 11:00 am

F'ren winced as he and Toulonth moved towards where the other two riders and their dragons were, each breath made his chest hurt, mostly off to one side so he was pretty sure that he'd broken at least one rib, the (very badly made) makeshift sling he'd made using some cloth scraps and spare leather straps didn't do much to prevent the pain from shooting through his shoulder. "I'm.....I'm ok... Toulonth... she needs some more numbweed, i used all mine on her" he said to V'al that was coming towards him.

"I ....i let Mine fall, we came out of Between in thick trees, i couldn't stop falling, i couldn't catch him....... " Broadcast the Green to all parties, it was easier for her to talk for F'ren, who's pain she felt, knowing they were both trying to conceal their pain from each other. "Mine i'm going to lay here and spread my wings out, sit beside me" she said gently to him, crooning a little each time he winced.

F'ren was white, his face drained of all color both from pain and from his failure again. He closed his eyes against the bitter disappointment he felt at letting Toulonth down yet again, she'd relied on him to give her the right image but for the second time he had failed to do so. He was seriously debating another trip, sure now that he'd get it wrong for a third time.

"Ack, numbweed, right!" Having almost reached F'ren, Xan screeched to a halt and sprinted back over to Opeth to retrieve her stock of the stuff. Slipping on a pair of fine leather gloves (the stuff you were supposed to use to protect yourself when applying numbweed brought her out in a rash), the black-haired woman hastened back over to Toulonth and set about rubbing it gently into her injuries. "I'll come to you next Lerath, if you need anymore? Then F'ren, and V'al I'll do what I can for you." Part of her reason for seeing to the dragons first was the fact that they were the ones that needed to be sharp for the jump home (they could take an image for Opeth if needs be), and partially because she knew that no rider would allow themselves to be seen to while their lifemate was still in pain. Shards. Why had this happened to them? They didn't deserve it.

"Yes," Opeth addressed his reply to both other dragons with a sigh as his rider scurried about with the numbweed, "we arrived without trouble a short while ago. It seems the Thread passed over here a short while ago; Mine already has a good amount of grubs potted up. Once you two and your riders are a little patched up I expect we can head straight off, unless it is decided that Mine should find more grubs, and some herbs. It might not look too good on us three to return with light pots and heavy injuries... You two and Yours will be alright though?" He didn't want to worry, he wanted to not care a wherry-feather about any of them but apparently that wasn't possible. Stupid compassion.

V’al grimaced slightly at F’ren’s mention of numbweed. “We’ve used all of ours.” Not able to do much else, he helped steady the greenrider and helped him sit down against his dragon’s side while Xan went for another pot of numbweed. When she returned, he shook his head at the offer. He’d been liberal with his pot, and neither he nor Lerath needed anymore of the weed so long as they didn’t jostle to bump their injuries too hard. “Try not to move too much. I’m going to see if I can rig a better sling out of some things I’d brought, try and get that arm off your side there,” he said firmly and started back toward Lerath. He was glad Toulonth had had least landed close by; not being able to run back and forth like Xan was irritating.

In a past life that had seemed so long before coming to the weyr, V’al had been a leatherworking apprentice. Today, thinking they might arrive at night and have to wait for daylight to begin their mystweed hunt, he’d packed a few strips of leather and some tools so he would be able to while away a few marks in etching designs into future belts. Now though, the belts and buckles were going to serve a better purpose.

Lerath rumbled in displeasure at their green companion’s tale and obvious distress. We came out underwater, and when I swam up there was threadfall at the surface. Mine tried to pull it off me so I could think enough to blink us Between. The distraught confusion of that moment bled into his voice, but after a quiet moment his voice calmed again. I think if Toulonth and her F’ren are not very hurt we should get some weeds. I am tired and want to wait a bit anyway, and going home will be much easier. We know what it looks like at least, but what does yours think Toulonth?

F'ren appreciated the fact Xan went to Toulonth first, knowing he would do the same for her Dragon if it had been the other way around. Dragons being hurt, pained F'ren, he didn't like to see them in needless pain, he could tell that others were hurt, he wanted to get up and help them but his shoulder, combined with the effort it took to shield his pain from Toulonth as much as he could made him tired, the long walk they'd had to find clear air too had been tiring and Toulonth would likely need to hunt soon, she was slightly paler than she should be.

He winced as V'al came to his side, to help him sit beside Touolonth but he was grateful of it, unbalanced as he was with one arm in it's makeshift sling. "Thanks V'al was it?" he chuckled with only a little humor then winced as pain shot through his chest as V'al told him to stay still "Not got much choice in that matter V'al, my legs have gone soft" he mumbled to the other rider, now that he got a chance to sit, he could rest for a while.

"Mine needs rest, and my wings ache ... maybe we could.... stay here a little, in the sun and heal for a bit first?" suggested Toulonth, crooning to Hers, who was hiding his pain from her, just as she hid hers from him. She gave Lerath a little draconic murr of sympathy when he talked about Thread and his hurt, and His getting hurt, she could understand him on that. "Mine would say the weeds are important, we came here for them, if we go back with none... he would think he had failed. We should stay and get more grubs and these weeds." she said, streching her wing out better for Xan to rub the numbweed onto the tears and gouges. "But we shouldn't stay too long, Mine has no more Numbweed and there might be Thread again" she added quietly.

"Right," Xan nodded as Opeth passed the conversation on to her, biting her lip uncertainly as she inspected the pair of young riders. If anything happened to them, if they took any permanent damage from this... "Let me look at you now then F'ren," she said softly, kneeling down beside the green rider and gently applying some numbweed to his wounds. "Once I've got you all patched up a bit I'll gather up as much weed as I can, then we can head home," the bluerider went on, talking more to reassure herself than for any other reason. "It'll be fine, and when we get back the healers will sort you all out properly."

"If they are not so weary and hurt that they fail to make the jump," Opeth put in privately to his rider. "I think they should all take coordinates from us, that would give them the best chance given you and I are not hurt. I would not be surprised if one or both of them don't make it though."

Xan closed her eyes briefly and tried to ignore her dragon's words. Just for once couldn't he try being reassuring? Probably not, it just wasn't in his nature; optimism was her job. She wasn't doing very well at it just now.
