Though he wasn't particularly displeased that he now had bright pink hair (thanks to his Minipet Training class for that), what Ren was displeased about was the fact that he smelled like something burnt. His group had, to say the least, not done as well in their classwork as they should have done, and as a result Ren was now the proud wearer of neon pink hair and the absolutely lovely odor. Professor Malcom had said that it would last only a day or two, but that was quite a long time, especially when one wanted to kiss their ghoulfriend and only got a wrinkled nose and a an amused "You smell like burnt cookies."

Crossing the campus, Ren slung his backpack higher over his shoulder and stuck his hands in his pockets, studiously ignoring the very strange looks he was getting. He debated going to see LW or Gabrian, but both were still in class, so he decided to just go straight home instead.

That is, until he spotted a familiar head of fluffy teal colored hair and floppy ears. Ren felt a smile break out across his face and he ambled quietly towards Jove, intent on sneaking up behind him and surprising him.

As quiet as Ren was, there was no fooling the little ghost pup. He was on his way back to his room, homework assignments safely tucked in a messenger bag slung across his chest, when it hit him.

That scent... After minipet class, Jove thought he would never get that terrible scent out of his nostrils. The acrid burning odour of FEAR gone terribly wrong, it had wafted over to his table making him gasp and choke, and now it was once again wafting downwind towards him, getting stronger and stronger... It was like a terrible recurring nightmare.

If his sensitive ears hadn't picked up Ren's approach, the reeking scent was a dead giveaway. The ghostly pup clamped one hand over his mouth and nose as he whirled around, and threw out his other hand in a dramatic "Don't take another step closer!" motion. He was already very fond of his new friend, and wasn't put off in the least by his change of hair colour, but that stench...!

Ren should have known he couldn't sneak up on someone like Jove. The puppy did have an astoundingly good nose, after all. That, and the fact that Ren smelled like something had died in the kitchen probably didn't help that fact either. Jove had whirled around, one hand flung out as if to say "No, go away!" before taking a step back.

"What?" said Ren, pouting a bit as he walked closer. "Can't I say hello to a friend?"

Obviously not, by that look, though Ren knew exactly why Jove was attempting to keep him at bay. Except that particular motion only made him want to tease the younger boil a little bit more, so he danced closer, grinning widely. Boils like Jove just made playing with him - in a friendly way - all the more fun. Ren would never do anything cruel or taunting towards the younger boil, but a bit of silly little fun wouldn't hurt.

Especially since that look of horror on his face was immensely amusing.

"Come on, I don't smell THAT bad," Ren said innocently.

Jove shook his head frantically, no, Ren was definitely not allowed to casually saunter over smelling the way he did! He didn't smell bad, he smelled terrible! He waved his hand as if to reassert his desire, but with no luck.

His eyes widened as he realized Ren was not going to listen, no matter how much hand-waving he did. What was the gryphon thinking, grinning like a loon and drawing closer despite smelling so Jackdamned awful? The pup's face would have been a complete mask of horror if it wasn't covered by one hand.

He took another couple steps backwards as Ren continued to approach, and then finally turned on his heels and booked it in the opposite direction. Hopefully his friend wouldn't feel hurt over his reaction. But even so, it was his own fault!

Ren's lower lip jutted out in an overly exaggerated pout, arms drooping to his sides as his ears flicked backwards. "Oh, come on," he said, in a mock offended tone. "Don't give me that look. I don't smell that bad!"

In all honesty, Ren was sure he did, in fact, smell quite a bit worse than he originally had thought. Burnt anything was not exactly a pleasant odor, and Jove, being a puppy himself, most likely had an oversensitive nose for these things - hence the utterly horrified look the foxfire wisp was giving him as he shook his head, looking somewhat panicked. Ren shrugged.

"It's not my fault I - hey wait just a second there mister - !"

He had turned around and run! Jove had just spun around, and booked it across the campus. Ren blinked, momentarily surprised as he put a hand above his eyes, squinting after the younger boil. Man, he's fast. "But not fast enough~!"

With a quick flap of his wings, Ren pushed against the air, propelling himself forward as he darted after Jove, chasing after the puppy. "Running away is so not nice, Freckles!" he called, gaining ground as he got close and closer to the wisp.

Jove heard the exclamation of surprise from behind him, which clearly meant Ren wasn't too upset... And then he heard Ren call out to him again. From even closer behind him.

The pup glanced over his shoulder, one hand still firmly clamped over his nose, and his brows furrowed into a glare that clearly read "Stop chasing me! You smell bad!" But desperate times called for desperate measures, and his poor nose was telling him things were indeed desperate!

He veered towards the campus dorms, in what initially looked like an attempt to run home and lock himself in his room. Instead of taking the curving path to the cemetery gate he cut straight across the field and hurdled the low graveyard fence in one fluid motion. Maybe that would slow Ren down a little, he hoped... But he didn't hope too hard, Ren was much bigger and taller, and had his wings to help him out.

"I will not stop chasing you," Ren said, in answer to the glare that Jove tossed over his shoulder at him. He grinned at the boil, shrugging in a nonchalant gesture that quite obviously meant sorry, no can do. He was not deterred in the slightest from his goal now; if anything, Jove's horrified reaction was only setting to spur him on even more. Sorry, little puppy.

Except he hadn't expected Jove to be able to run so fast. Even Ren was surprised by the sheer speed of the wisp as he veered sideways, towards the cemetery. In one quick, smooth motion he had leapt over the low fence, darting into the graveyard. Ren blinked, then grinned in amusement. I knew these wings would come in handy...

Pressing his foot into against the ground, Ren's wings extended farther out, and he flapped them once, twice, before they caught against the air, allowing him to push himself upwards, over the gate, and landing nimbly on the ground below. He could see Jove a few yards away, weaving through the rows of headstones, and he took off after him, dusting the ground with tan colored down feathers.

"Why did you run in here?" Ren asked as he drew nearer, almost close enough to grab the boil. He glanced around musingly. "Don't think I've ever even been over to this side before..."

Although it had started as a rather friendly game of chase, Ren had gotten real close in a hurry, and Jove found himself suddenly overwhelmed with a panicked sensation. It turned serious for the pup in a hurry. He couldn't bear it, the thought of being caught, and... and something, always that terrible something that lingered just out of sight and threatened to destroy him. The little ghost only knew he had to run for his life, despite having already lost it.

He sped up, his body reacting to his fright completely of it's own accord, and instead of dashing into the dorm he jumped onto a nearby tombstone and used it as a stepping stone to launch himself towards the building in the center of the little cemetery. He grabbed the eaves with both hands, and pulled himself up onto the mausoleum's roof with deceptive strength for one as small and scrawny as himself. The entire hop and leap was executed as smoothly as he had hurdled the fence, and he barely lost any speed at all as he dashed across the roof.

Ren was starting to think he was weirding Jove out by this chase.Though he knew that it was just a friendly, silly game of tag between the two of them, something had shifted on the other boil's face that made Ren frown as he followed after the little wisp. He threaded through the rows upon rows of headstones, his tail whipping behind him. For a few moments he had thought he had lost Jove, but then he saw the ghost by the mausoleum, hoisting himself up onto the rooftop before darting across.

Steeling himself, Ren's wings extended to their full length and he pushed against the air, propelling himself upwards. He landed on the rooftop with a soft thump, stumbling slightly as his feet slipped on the stone. A few steps forward and Ren's fingers closed around the back of Jove's shirt. "Hey, hold on there - "

In one quick movement Ren had swept the little puppy up into his arms, leaping off the side of the mausoleum to land gently on the grass below. He set Jove down gently, but didn't let go, peering at him with a vaguely upset expression, lips pulled downwards in a faint frown. "What's wrong?" he asked. "I'm just kidding, Jove, you know that, right? I'm not gonna do anything to you."

Jove's non-existant heart leapt up into his throat as he felt the tug and he thrashed violently against Ren's grasp until it became clear he wasn't getting away. Right now the smell was nothing compared to the fear coursing through him. A frightened growl rose in his throat and his ears lay flat, but even in his panic-driven state he couldn't quite manage to bare his teeth at his friend. He was not a wild dog, just a terrified pup.

After a few seconds of being held the panic loosened it's hold over the little ghost, and he started to tremble all over. He glanced up at Ren with a shell-shocked expression, confused and frightened and for once completely laid bare without all his scowls and snorts to draw attention away from his weaknesses. What was wrong? Nothing, and yet everything if he had thought the gryphon was someone he had to fear even for a moment.

Ren had not expected the growl that Jove let out, nor the way his ears flattened back against his head in fear. Though what he was afraid of, Ren was not sure at all. There was nothing around them that could be considered frightening - except for the mausoleum and the graveyard, of course, but as a ghost Ren had not thought the other boil would be that afraid of something like that. He blinked, taken aback by the sudden change in Jove's attitude.

"What's wrong?" he asked again, but his question trailed off slightly when Jove started to shake. Ren's eyes widened, and for a moment he stood there, stumped into a stupor until finally he reached out, taking Jove's arm.

"Hey," he said gently as he pulled him towards him, wrapping his arms around the other in a careful, loose hug. Ren knew he still smelled quite bad, but at the same time, he did not want Jove to feel afraid. That wide-eyed, panicked expression was too similar to the ones Ren had used to wear when he was younger.

"Hey, no need to fear," Ren murmured lightly, as he stood there, casually putting a hand atop the boil's head in what he hoped was a comforting gesture. "Nothing here but a buncha old bones. Oh, and me, of course. But other than that, we're okay. You're okay."

Being grabbed was by far the more frightening result for the pup, having sent him into a mindless panic, but being caught by Ren was better than the alternative. He might have gotten lost by the time he found a place to hide, and had to rely on his nose to lead him back to the school, or he might have just kept running until his legs gave out and he couldn't run any farther. At least this way he was safe. Scared, but safe.

Jove's little legs felt all wobbly as he came to his senses, and he slowly leaned into the hug until he was dead weight in Ren's arms. Not that he would ever weigh that much, with his child's body, and a ghostly body on top of that. His fluffy ears relaxed, although still laid back gently in his growing shame for having freaked out. But Ren was right, he was okay...

Except for that smell.

The biggest sign that Jove was once again more or less himself was clamping one free hand over his nose as he leaned against his friend. His displeased scowl was weak and unconvincing but it was there. However, he was still loathe to push away from the embrace, or even stand up under his own power.

Jove was shaking, his tiny body trembling as Ren held him gently in his arms. He still couldn't figure out what had set off the sheer terror, but whatever it was had been enough to cause the little puppy to try and run away from him. Jove had collapsed against him, and if he had been any bigger, Ren might have stumbled backwards. But he was small and relatively frail, a wispy bit of fluff that weighed next to nothing compared to the others. Not that this was a bad thing. Just...different.

Ren glanced down at Jove, his hand smoothing lightly over the boil's fluffy teal hair. He would have thought he was all right, were it not for the fact that A.) The puppy was still curled up against him, a few tremors shuddering through him every few seconds, and B.) He had, in fact, clamped one hand over his mouth and nose to prevent Ren's lovely burnt smell from permeating into his nose. This last fact Ren could not help smiling about, and he let out a sheepish laugh, reaching a hand up to rub the back of his neck.

"Sorry, er..." he said with a mild shrug. "Professor Malcom said it would go away in a day...or two...I haven't showered yet, so I haven't seen if just scrubbing really, really hard would get rid of it yet."

Ren stood there for a few more moments, just absently letting his fingers sift through Jove's soft, fluffy hair before patting him on the head affectionately.

"Feeling better?" he asked gently. "Can you stand all right?"
PostPosted: Tue Mar 01, 2011 8:12 pm

With his face covered, being close enough for comforting wasn't completely unbearable, and Jove could relax into the sensation of being petted. If he wasn't so distraught he might have shoved Ren away, preferring not to be seen in such a compromising position while still struggling to assert his independence. He wasn't sure what it was about being stroked on the head that brought on such feelings of safety and security, but he wasn't going to worry about other students seeing him cuddled right that instant.

Jove nodded, he could probably stand without Ren's help... But it wasn't until the gryphon's earlier comment hit him that the pup did stand on his own. And it wasn't just standing, his eyes widened and he gave his friend a forcible shove towards the ghost dorm. How could he smell like that, and then not even take a Jackdamned shower?! There was no way he was going to let Ren continue to walk around without so much as attempting to fix that horrible smell!

Although Jove was in no way capable of moving the gryphon if he didn't want to move, the pup tried his hardest anyway. Then, a horrible thought hit him, and he changed directions so he was attempting to push Ren towards the monster dorms. If he made Ren bathe in his room, his room would smell disgusting FOREVER!

"You know," Ren said conversationally as the two of them stood there, quiet in the late afternoon that was rapidly turning into evening. "I'm not sure what it is, but I always thought getting my head scratched made me feel better." His fingers fluffed a bit of Jove's pale teal hair, poking one of his floppy ears lightly. "Maybe it's an animal thing, but sometimes it just makes you feel a bit better, doesn't it?"

He was not entirely certain if what he said was true for the boil, but from the way Jove sank against him, Ren was inclined to think that it was. After all, if it made him uncomfortable, Jove would have said - theoretically speaking - that it was awkward, or pushed him away. Instead he was leaning against him, and it made Ren smile.

That is, until he felt the small hands of the wisp pushing against his stomach and then his back as Jove attempted to propel him back to the school. Ren lifted a brow. "Er," he said, tilting his head. "What, ah...are you doing?"

He obligingly moved his feet, first towards the ghost dorms, then veered sideways as Jove shifted, going in the direction of the monster dorms now. "Where are we going?" Ren asked cheerfully, letting the ghost boil move him. He stuck his hands in his pockets and ambled along, craning his head to look back at Jove. "My room? Is that where we're going?"
