Angela bustled about the examination room setting things up. The vertical blinds were currently semi closed for privacy, but the daylight was still lighting up the room. The floor was carpeted in pale green, and the examination table itself was covered in a darker green padded vinyl. A gray counter with a sink and several glass jars full of various things like cotton balls and tongue depressors was across from a worn wooden desk with the teacher's laptop on top of it.
As she assembled her tray of things she'd need, Angela thought about the child in question. It sure seemed as though there had been a lot of vaccinations lately! But meeting new children was always fun, and her newest patient was no exception.
Her name is Mariel, and she has mink genes, if I am remembering correctly, the teacher thought as she set the vaccine vial next to a pair of gloves and a needle on the metal tray.
She went to get the iodine swab and a band-aid to add as well, as she continued ruminating on the upcoming appointment. Slightly shy, so I'll have to try and make this as unscary as possible, Angela thought, a contemplative expression on her face. Her watch beeped, and she jumped a little, then looked at it. It was almost time for Mariel and her guardian's arrival.

Mariel walked beside her mother down the sterile lab hallways. normally she bounced into the D-Corp building because usually this building meant class. She liked class and she was constantly hoping that one day their visit would be for her dragon egg! But today was different, she didnt exactly hang back but she wasnt bouncy, today was vaccination day. She didnt know what that meant but it didnt sound like fun. Luna had said they were going to poke her and then be done, but she didnt know how she liked that arrangement. She continued to walk beside her mother wide eyed and taking in all information in case she had to run back to the car. To add to her discomfort her mother had put her in clothes today, not super restricticve clothing but she was wearing pants...UGH, she still had on her bikini top but she didnt like how the pants didnt let her legs breathe. Today was just not a good day.
Mariel stared as her mother opened the door they were looking for and ushered her in. Mariel stared wide eyed at the lady who was already there and immediately began to take stock of her surroundings. She kept glancing at the lady waiting for any sudden moves but there was so much STUFF! It was distracting. "Hi" she managed to peep out as she scooted closer to her mother who was sitting in a provided chair totally calm.

Angela noticed Mariel's shyness and smiled gently at her. "Hello, both of you. My name is Angela. You must be Mariel," she greeted the child and her mother. "What a cute girl!" she added, for it was the truth.
"You're here for a vaccination today, right?" Angela asked, noticing how Mariel was peering around curiously at the room. "Are there any questions you have?"
Angela liked to answer any questions either of them might have. She found that knowing what was going on usually made it less scary or worrisome for people. And while they were under a bit of time limit, there wasn't any need to rush.

Mariels ears both faced the lady, Angela, full on even as her head turned and her eyes drank in the strange room. She finally thought she had taken as much as she could and so she turned to face the new woman head on. She crept a little closer to the lady because in reality Mariel was being eaten alive by her curiosity but her shyness was still her biggest Barrier.
"Yeah, I'm here for my vaccinations. Whats that? and that? and why do I need vaccinations?" Mariel pointed to the tongue depressors and the tray of things for the vaccination itself. She eyed the sharp needle warily, it was shiny but pointy so she couldn't decide if it was a threat or not. She set both big violet eyes on Angela in anticipation of an answer, if she was gonna get pricked well then she decided that she would ask all the questions that came to ming to make this trip worth it.

Angela smiled, delighted by the questions. She really did like to teach.
"Those are tongue depressors. They help me look at the back of someone's throat when they come in with a cold," she explained, taking one out and letting Mariel look at it if she wanted. "They are like really big popsicle sticks," she added.
"And those," she continued, "are for giving you your shots." Angela went on to explain what each of the items were and what they would be used for. Iodine and gloves to keep germs away from the site, the vial and the needle for the injection itself, and a bandage for later, if necessary.
Once Mariel was satisfied with the answer, Angela tackled the last question. "As for why you need them, it's so you don't get sick later. I don't mean a regular cold, mind. There are some diseases that are really bad, and these shots keep you from getting them. Scientists are working to make new vaccines all the time to prevent more and more diseases," she finished, sounding energetic about the subject.
"Any other questions?" she asked, tilting her head slightly.

Mariel took the tongue depressor and sniffed at it before sticking it in her mouth. it was just like a Popsicle stick. She spent the rest of Angelas explanations sucking on the wooden stick and emitting the proper oohs and aahs as she learned about all the things on the tray and why they were needed. It was all pretty interesting, if a bit scary and then of course there was the whole explanation of why she needed her vaccines.
"There are other diseases besides the flu?!" mariel asked half shocked and surprised. It had never crossed her mind that there was anything but the seasonal nuisance. "What kind of diseases? do they make your nose run too? Cause i dont like that part." Mariel hated it when her nose was runny, the boogers would just get all over her face fur and it was just not fun to clean up or deal with. She held out her arm all of a sudden eager to get this shot. "Can I have my shot now. I dont want a disease, not if it makes my nose run!"

"There are lots of diseases other than the flu," Angela replied, "but most of them are either taken care of by keeping clean or by getting the proper shots for them," she explained. There was a lot more to it than that, of course, but there was no point in giving information overload. There were classes just for that, after all.
She chuckled a bit at the sudden eagerness Mariel showed, and nodded. "Well, if you're ready for your shot, climb up on the seat here, please?" Angela asked, patting the edge of the examination table.
As Mariel took her place, Angela put on the gloves and prepped the needle with a practiced, confident air before picking up the iodine swab. Mariel had fur, but it was very short, silky fur, so the iodine should still do it's job.
"Before I start, does Mariel have any allergic reactions to iodine?" she asked, already thinking of where the alcohol pads were just in case she needed a back up.

Mariel still watched the needle with both eyes and ears pointed straight at it. She knew it would hurt but these diseases sounded alot worse than what she was getting and so she chose the lesser of two evils. Just as she started to brace herself Angela stopped and Mariel let out a breath she didnt know she had been holding. She wondered if that was normal, should she hold her breath when getting shots? She thought about it for a second.
Luna shook her head at the doctors question with a smile. "No, she not allergic to anyting I know of." She told her in her spanish accented voice. She was being highly amused by the whole process. She had assumed that Mariel would put up more of a fight than this but it seemed like everything was turning out ok. "You are berry good wit children." She complimented the doctor after a second thought.
Mariel puffed out her cheeks at her mother "I'm not a child, I'm a young lady." She stated before turning her attention back to Angela and remembering that she had a question. "Whats an allergy and why dont I have any? Should i get some?" Whatever those things were they had stopped Angela from giving her a shot so maybe they were better than medicines at keeping away disease.

Angela looked pleased and thanked Luna. She knew she loved children, but it was always nice to receive a compliment.
"Well, young lady, I think you wouldn't enjoy an allergy at all, and they certainly aren't something you should try to get," she turned to answer Mariel's question, a small scolding shake of her finger accompanying the last part, though it was obviously in good humor.
"An allergy is when your body thinks it has found a disease but has really made a mistake, and so it overreacts," Angela explained. "Like when the flowers give off pollen in spring, and so some people have runny noses, as if they had colds. Their bodies think the pollen is a germ. Some people have skin allergies to things like iodine and it makes them get a rash. Not fun at all, and they can get as bad as a real cold," she finished, nodding to emphasize her point.
"Well, shall we begin again? If you have any other questions, I will answer to the best of my ability," she said, but began to open the iodine swab. It looked like a really big cotton swab soaked in brown liquid, and smelled kind of like nail polish remover. She rubbed it in a circle on the outside of Mariel's shoulder for several seconds, letting the iodine soak into the girl's fur and to her skin.

After Angelas explanation Mariel decided the doctor was right. She definitely didn't want an allergy. She couldnt think of anymore question at the moment but found herself mulling over the idea that some bodies thought pollen was a germ. Silly bodies, pollen was like perfume...would they be allergic to perfume to then? Mariel snapped herself back to the situation at hand she would have time to think over these things later, right now she needed to make sure she didnt miss any of this disease preventing stuff. Incase a disease ever came and tried to say she didnt do it.
She wrinkled her nose as the smell of the swab came over her. It definitely didnt smell good. She remembered Angela explaining why she needed it...iodine right? but she suddenly under stood something "Well now I see why people are allergic to it." She wrinkled her nose and watched as it was rubbed all over her elbow. "The smell goes away right?" mariel was suddenly anxious, maybe she would take the disease over smelling like that forever.

(( Shoulder. ^.~ ))
Angela nodded as she watched the second hand of the clock, counting to 20. "It will go away once it gets washed," she said with a smile, sounding certain.
Then she picked up the needle and prepped it, filling it with a clear liquid to a very precise line and turning back to Mariel. She held the needle properly, and placed her other gloved hand on Mariel's upper arm, fingers spreading the skin so it is taut.
"I'd like you to relax your arm, let it go limp," she said, and answered the question she could already see coming. "When your arm is tensed up, that makes it hurt more." She waited until Mariel's arm was relaxed to her satisfaction, and then nodded encouragingly.
"And, here we go. Three, two, one," she counted down, putting the needle in on two quickly before Mariel had a chance to tense up in anticipation. It was an old trick she had learned. She pressed the plunger, and smoothly removed the needle. In all, the action only took a few short seconds.
"All done!" she said, visually checking to see if Mariel was having any adverse reactions such as light-headedness in reaction to being stuck.
"You did very well!" she congratulated the girl and smiled as she pressed a cotton ball against the site for several seconds.

((lol teacher is now anticipating Mariels questions xD I cant wait to have a real class with you xD))
Mariel tried her best to relax as she watched Angela preparing the needle and getting all the fluid into it but she was still antsy about the needle itself. She would have asked why but Angela did actually answer the question first. She was about to ask how Angela knew the question before she had asked it when the countdown began. mariel tried to relax, she breathed, she tried not to think about it but she found herself getting ready to tense when the countdown was over. But before anything could happen the shot was over!
"Thats it?! Thanks, I promise I wont catch any disease now, and if I do I'll bring it for you okay." Mariel thanked her teacher and wondered why that took so little time. She found herself staring at the place where she had just recieved a shot and though it still smelled of iodine she really didnt feel anything. "I think it hurts more when I wipeout" she thought out loud. She had definitely experienced more pain falling onto her surfboard than this had been. She saw her mother getting up and preparing their things and for a second wondered why before she remembered that the shot was really all they had come for. She smiled at Angela and found that she liked her after all. "I hope I see you again miss Angela."

(( that will be fun! ^_^ ))
Angela chuckled. "That's it!" she agreed.
She nodded at Mariel's judgement of the amount of pain. "I've never wiped out, but I imagine that would hurt much more," she said. She stripped off the gloves and disposed of them in the trash as Maria got down from the table.
"I hope to see you again, too, Mariel. Thank you for being such a good patient today," she said with a genuine smile, and a wave goodbye.
