 Lucius cast a quick glance behind him, walking faster than really seemed warranted. Of course, he was rather quickly leaving behind yet another incredibly awkward family gathering, so perhaps the speed wasn't as unwarranted as it seemed. Watching his father be cruel to his mother, and then immediately backpedal as soon as she got upset was unpleasant enough-dealing with his sister was more than he could handle. Thus, he had decided to slide out when everyone else was distracted and put as much distance between himself and his family as he possibly could.

 Rysa loved her mother - she really did. But there were times when the Maykat drove her up a wall. Like now. How could she act so childishly?! Her mother had invited a bunch of friends over, and the group of them had made a mess of the house: cookie dough all over the kitchen, pillows strewn throughout the living room, make-up all over the bathroom. It was like they'd had a teenage slumber party. Rysa found herself scowling, and sighed. She was sure her mother would clean up most of it, but the mess always bothered her for the day or two until her mother got around to it. And so she was staying outside, away from the disaster zone at home, trying (and failing) to keep her mind off it. Failing so hard, in fact, that she wasn't paying much attention at all to where she was going.

Lucius definitely should have been paying better attention to where he was going. That became clear when he found himself impacting something rather soft but still solid enough to knock him over. He flailed a little, but ended up rather effectively buttplanted on the ground. As soon as his brain caught up with the rest of him, he looked up, only to realize that it was a very lovely lady that he had run into. "Oh my gosh, miss, I'm so sorry!" He gasped, "I wasn't paying attention to where I was going and-are you okay?"

"Ooof." Rysa also landed on the ground, just as startled as Lucius. She was too surprised to say anything at first, but when he tried to take the blame she quickly replied, "Oh no, it was my fault! I was lost in thought, I should have been watching where I was going." She took a good look at the boy she had bumped into, and was very glad her dark fur covered up the faint blush she felt spreading over her cheeks. Oh wow, he was cute. Why did she have to make a fool of herself in front of a cute boy?

Lucius shook his head. "I wasn't paying attention either," he confessed, looking horribly embarrassed. "So I guess it's everyone's fault?" He asked, standing up and holding out a paw to help her up. "A-are you alright?" He asked, trying not to blush. Oh darn it, he was going to make an even worse fool of himself if this kept up, if that was possible after running into her and knocking her over. "U-um, my name's Lucius," he said a bit belatedly.

She gratefully took his paw, using it to climb back to her feet. "Well, if we're both to blame, then nothing to worry about, right?" she asked, with a slightly-nervous laugh. "I'm Rysa," she replied, when he offered his name. "So what are you doing out here, all in a daze?"

Lucius nodded. "Yeah, exactly," he said, letting out a little relieved sigh as he pulled her up. Now that she was on his level and he could look into her eyes, his face flushed bright red and he glanced away, letting go of her hand. "Nice to meet you, Rysa." He said. He glanced back at her and let out a little nervous laugh at her question. "I was...actually trying to get away from my family..."

"Really?" she asked, surprise tinging her tone before she broke into a small laugh. "Truth to tell, I was too. I can't stand messes, and the house looks like a tornado hit thanks to my mom and her friends... so I'm taking a walk until she cleans up. What about you?"

"My family is just crazy," he said. He looked a bit embarrassed. "My dad and sister are Baddies, but my mom's a reg like me. One of those crazy Valentine's things, y'know?" He glanced behind him, in the direction that said mess of a family was. "They meet every once in a while and...well, you can imagine how well it goes."

"Wow," she replied with a laugh. "I think you've got me beat. At least my mom does take care of the cleaning, even if I have to be out of the way until she does." She smiled sympathetically. "Well, if we're both avoiding our families for the time being, we can do so together. That's always better, right?" She held out her paw, trying to act nonchalant, doing her best not to show the flutter of butterflies in her stomach. She had just met him, after all, even if he was really cute.

Lucius laughed. "Believe me when I say, I wish I didn't have you beat," he said, shaking his head. "I'd love to avoid my family with you. Um. If that sounded right." He said, even though he wanted to freak out. How was he going to keep his cool around her for much longer? He had never really been good around girls who weren't his mom. So this was almost a test of his ability to not make a total idiot of himself.

She laughed. "Yeah, it sounded fine." She stared at her outstretched paw for a moment, and when he didn't take it, somewhat self-consciously let it drop back to her side. She looked around, wondering where they should go. "Any idea where you'd like to head? I was just kind of wandering aimlessly before."

Lucius only notice her owe when it dropped back to her side. 'Oh, good job, moron!' He thought. It was much too late to take it now, clearly. "Um, there's a nice park that way..." He said, gesturing. "There's a little sandwich shop and an ice-cream stand there," he told her, feeling a little bit lame. "And the park itself is really pretty."

A smile lit up Rysa's face. "Oooh, I love ice cream! Lunch, dessert, and a walk in the park. It almost sounds like a date!" She managed to throw off the comment without thinking about it too much, leading to a lighthearted tone - a trick she'd learned to keep from getting flustered around cute boys. She started walking in the direction he'd gestured. "So do you go there often?"

Lucius blinked. "Yeah, I guess it does," he said, keeping his tone as casual as he could, and he smiled brightly as he put a bit more thought into it. 'So she doesn't seem revolted by the idea of a date with me. That's good,' he thought. He walked next to her. "Every once in a while," he said. "It's a really great place, but I don't think I've ever taken anyone there before."
