`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

"Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!"

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought --
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.

And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

"And, has thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!'
He chortled in his joy.

`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

Do you think that Dodgson may have had a meaning behind the jibberish?

Was the Jabberwocky meant to symbolize something?

Does the Jabberwocky have a special symbolism to you?

You missed out the last stanza!

Well its not really jibberish; it all means something and tells a story.

Humpty's explanations of the words;

'Twas brillig' = It was 4pm.

'and the slithy toves' = A Tove is a badger like creature.

'did grye and gimble in the wabe' = Gyre means to go around like a gyroscope. Wabe is the grass plot around a sun-dial.

'All mimsy where the borogoves' = Borogove is a type of bird.

'And the mome raths outgrabe' = A Mome Rath is a green pig. Outgrabe is a kind of shriek isn't it?

[Though Dodgson himself wrote some other meanings for them too. I can find them if you want.]

Add more if you like~

Now the rest of it is easier to understand anyway; it seems a father is telling his son about the Jabberwock creature, this guy decides to go look for it and slay it for some reason. [I wonder if the Jabberwock had a say in this matter?] and succeeds. And his father is very pleased about this.

Other unusual words;

Bandersnatch; A very fast creature.

Frabjous; great word, probably a mixture of joyous and fabulous.

Callooh Callay; My utmost favourite word in the book. Its obviously some form of 'hooray'.

Again I haven't written them all here; feel free to add the others.

'O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!' is such an awesome line. Hehe.

I love this poem; its my favourite. It makes a lot of sense to me... hmmm. There is sense in nonsense. I also love the Jabberwock; the original picture and design is just amazing and that's always how I imagine it looking. Such an amazing dragon-like creature.

Apparently Tulgey Wood may be located on the island where the Snarks and Boojums are.

Deepest apologies! I thought I had copied the entire thing.

And I love the word crossovers he makes too.

In my opinion the Jabberwock is any large obstacle we must face. The father describes the things that will scare us and trip us up and frighten us from facing these obstacles. I've had dreams where tough decisions or problems took the form of a Jabberwock with horrible teeth and claws and it was faster than me.

Its possible that the reason this poem was recited to Alice is to make her realize that she could indeed face the scary world and learn the things she needed to learn, no matter how confusing and nonsense they sounded in the beginning.

Your thoughts on this theory?

That theory does make sense. I mean if the poem was meant to have any deeper meaning this truely could be it. Hehe. I'm so awesome with my answers arn't I? 'Its about a guy who slays a dragon, whoosh!' ^_^; Give me a while and I could probably find another meaning for it too.... but I kinda like the story... it reminds me of the old-fashioned hero and dragon stories.

Though the poem isn't recited to Alice; she reads it herself in the mirror. But yeah I can understand where you're coming from.

I wonder though... the Jabberwock... how do we know its really... evil? There's the father's word of course but... people would always find dragon-like creatures scary. Yes it did seem to attack the son; but he was looking for it... and he did have a sword... maybe the Jabberwock was defending itself? Or am I just being silly? Guess I don't like to think dragons are all evil.

apologies again. I am constantly mixing up the different versions of AiW that I have seen and heard. I know originally she reads it, and later The tweedles try to explain it to her. In other versions it is recited by various characters (depending on which one).

I don't like to think about Dragons being evil either. The Jabberwock always looked to me like he was unhappy or had a toothache =P
I wish more would have been said on the Jabberwock - what an interesting creature he is. Too bad he is only mentioned in a poem instead of Alice actually encountering him (I assume he is the only one since he is referred to as THE Jabberwock)

That's okay! I was just stating things because I like to type a lot. Hehe.

I'm wondering how long ago that was meant to of happened? If the Jabberwock was truely the only one [which is confusing anyway] that means Tulgey Wood no longer has a Jabberwock. I wonder if there are Snarks and Boojums there too? Then again it could just be a story~

What a horrible idea for there not to be a Jabberwock in Tugley wood anymore!
