This is actually something I'd been thinking of doing on my own, for quite some time - but if we're going to have the Guild, why not use it, eh? The idea arose elsewhere, earlier, so I thought I might bring it up in here.
All I'm talking about is hosting Design contests, in the zOMG! Forum, under the z!magine banner - similar to the 'Design-a-Fluff' contest, mentioned in the post above. It would, most likely, be a series of contests, each with its own theme ('Design-a-Fluff', 'Design-an-Instance', 'Design-a-BB Boss', etc.), and we would probably offer a few moderate prizes (my pockets don't run too deep ) - Most Viable Design (for the one we feel would make the best addition to the game), Most Outlandish Design (to encourage people to think way outside the box), Honourable Mention (for the ones we love, but we don't know why), and probably a People's Choice (because you know how Gaians love polls). Crew members for the Guild would all be welcomed to help judge, and absolutely anyone would be welcomed to compete (though, Crew members oughtn't judge while competing, for obvious reasons).
What I'm looking for from you all is opinions. Good idea? Bad idea? Would you be comfortable with z!magine running something like this, or is it too silly? What do you think would be reasonable for prizes? How often should we run them? Any suggestions for themes? What I have is a very raw idea of what I'd like to happen - and, as this Guild is wont to do, I'd like your help in refining that a bit. I'm just looking for feedback, be it good or bad, to help give me some idea as to how (or whether) I should move forward with this...

Hm... I need more time to mull this over and come up with a good response. Perhaps Monday.

Thard_Verad Hm... I need more time to mull this over and come up with a good response. Perhaps Monday. Well, that doesn't sound like instantaneous hatred - I suppose I'll take it. xp
Don't worry, though; this isn't anything I'm really in a hurry about, I was just curious to see what everyone else thought...

I tentatively like the idea (as in, I like it, but I haven't thought out a nice response for the specifics of why and all).
(should the contests be called, rather than "Design a(n) X", "z!magine a(n) X"?)

Atrash the Squidmonger (should the contests be called, rather than "Design a(n) X", "z!magine a(n) X"?) I do love wordplay. whee
The 'Design-a-' moniker is just a holdover from when I originally had the idea, back when I was working with z!Spot (whose name doesn't work nearly as well for that). After I left z!Spot, I briefly considered doing it on my own, but I always find that contests feel more complete with a group 'sponsor'...

On the surface, I don't think the notion of hosting a design (or z!magine) contest is a bad idea. Correct me if I'm mistaken, but is the guild's founding principle not "To foster ideas for the betterment of zOMG!"? A creativity contest would certainly fit within that ideal.
Of course, the devil's in the details, as they say. For starters, I don't think we'd ever get as large a turnout as an official, dev-sanctioned contest would. Plus, our capacity to grant prizes is limited by our pocketbooks. It may be that nothing short of a Sweetheart Ring will get any attention at all.
I wouldn't host these too often, although if a rich benefactor were to help out, we could perhaps do one a month.
Other things to design: - Rings - Buddies - Badges - NPCs - Recipes

Perhaps this is fortuitous? sweatdrop
It seems the zOMG! Awareness Week plans for 2011 actually include a couple of design contests. I'll have to get a hold of those in charge of the z!A, anyhow, to get us included as a 'zOMG! Guild', and I'll find out what they think of the possibility of collaborating on the contests.
Likewise, I should find out what you all think about collaborating on this; opinions, anyone?
