Want to learn Japanese? Well here's the place to start! I am currently taking a japanese class, and have been enjoying it so much that I offered my services to Haku to help her set up this thread in the guild. Hope you guys like it. Just bear with me as I work on setting it up. ^ ^ Also, I realize that there are those of you out there who already know some japanese. Feel free to suggest I add things to this thread.
Remeber, I'm pretty much a beginner, so there is only so much I can put down. For you guild members that know japanese, feel free to add a bubble with some Japanese info that you'd like to share with the guild.Table of Contents 1. Hiragana and Katakana 2. Pronunciation Rules 3. Greetings and Polite Expressions 4. Numbers and Time*from the 4th post on, my entries will be entered in with the conversations. I will number them and try to label what page they are on, but you'll have to scroll through stuff to find them. Sorry! 5. Japanase Insult link (page one)

Hiragana Part One:a あ ------ i い ------ u う -------- e え-------- o お ka か --- ki き ----- ku く ------- ke け ----- ko こ sa さ --- shi し ---- su す ------ se せ ----- so そ ta た --- chi ち ---- tsu つ ------ te て ----- to と na な --- ni に ----- nu ぬ ------ ne ね ---- no の ha は --- hi ひ ---- fu/hu ふ --- he へ ---- ho ほ ma ま --- mi み ---- mu む ----- me め --- mo も ra ら ---- ri り ------ ru る ------- re れ ----- ro ろ ya や ---------------- yu ゆ ------------------ yo よ waわ --- o/wo を n ん Part Two:There are more sounds/letters that can be made in hiragana. The first one of these rules you should know about is that by adding two little marks (much like quotation marks) next to certain hiragana symbols, you get a whole new sound. Here are all the possible ones:
hiragana with a 'k' sound can be changed to a 'g' sound: ga が --- gi ぎ --- gu ぐ --- ge げ --- go ご
hiragana with a 's' sound can be changed to a 'z' sound: za ざ --- * ji じ --- zu ず --- ze ぜ --- zo ぞ *as you can see, there are some exceptions. the hiragana symbol shi, does not become zhi, it becomes ji. Oddities like this are just little things that you will have to memorize. You will see little things like this pop up in some of the other hiragana too. hiragana with a 't' sound can be changed to a 'd' sound: da だ --- (ji) ぢ --- (zu) づ --- de で --- do ど* as you may have noticed, just like shi, chi does not get changed to di, and tsu does not get changed to du. however, that is not why they appear in paranthesis. they are marked that way because the are not commonly used. Usually, when you want a ji or zu sound, you will use the shi or su hiragana. There are a few exceptions. I will not list them here.hiragana with a 'h' sound can be changed in two ways. In the first line, two dashes (a lot like quotation marks) are added after the hiragana symbol: ba ば --- bi び --- bu ぶ --- be べ --- bo ぼ To make a 'p' sound out of 'h' hiragana, add a small circle after the hiragana rather than the two slash marks: pa ぱ --- pi ぴ --- pu ぷ --- pe ぺ --- po ぽ The second of these methods is to add a slightly smaller yu, ya, or yo next to a normal sized hiragana. Here are all the possible combinations:
りゃ rya ---- りゅ ryu ---- りょ ryo Part Three:Katakana a ア ------ i イ ------ u ウ -------- e エ-------- o オ ka カ --- ki キ ----- ku ク ------- ke ケ ----- ko コ sa サ --- shi シ ---- su ス ------ se セ ----- so ソ ta タ --- chi チ ---- tsu ツ ------ te テ ----- to ト na ナ --- ni ニ ----- nu ヌ ------ ne ネ ---- no ノ ha ハ --- hi ヒ ---- fu/hu フ --- he へ ---- ho ホ ma マ --- mi ミ ---- mu ム ----- me メ --- mo モ ra ラ ---- ri り ------ ru ル ------- re レ ----- ro ロ ya ヤ ---------------- yu ユ ------------------ yo ヨ wa ワ --------------------- wo/o ヲ n ン *the pronunciation rules are the same for katakana as they are for hiragana.

Alright, now that we've got the hiragana out of the way, I'd like to explain some of the rules that you will have to keep in mind while using this thread.
Rules Japanese is a language very different than english. For instance, they do not have an "l" sound. Their "r"s are sort of a combination of r and l. In some cases, it sounds just like our "r", in other cases it can sound more like a weird sounding "l". For example, the japanese word for history is rekishi. The "r" sounds normal in this word. But, then there are words like my name, Lisa. They would spell it Risa (haha, I just had a flashback to Scooby-doo xd ), but they would get pretty close to pronouncing it with an "l" sound.

yay I am finally learnig proper Japanese just opne question there is an annoying teacher at school who doesn't know Japanese how do i call her a b***h?tell me in a PM please mrgreen
5. Edit 8/27: Someone PMed me and gave me this site. It has insults in all languages. www.insultmonger.com
This info is from a friend in my other guild who works with me on a thread just like this: carbonated.soda
swear words
くそ!(ku-so!) = is basically the equivallent of "s**t." not to be used lightly! しまった。(shi-ma-tta.) = can be used as "damnit" but mainly used for when you mess something up, etc. だまれ。(da-ma-re) = this means "shut up." there are many ways to say shut up, starting with the polite 静かにして下さい。(shi-zu-ka-ni-shi-te ku-da-sai), "please be quiet." when you say だまら(da-ma-re) it would generally sound degrading towards another.
dirty phrases/words ふぇらしろ。(fe-ra-shi-ro.) = hmm... something your boyfriend might tell you: "suck my d**k." へんたい。(he-n-tai) = can be used in reference to two things: porn, or a pervert.

___________________// ★fillmewithfaithinthefaceofthelight I may take you up on that. ^_^ Right now I just want to start it out slow. I get all my info from my japanese class, but we learn things in a weird order, so if you wanted to make a post with colors and write the kanji for numbers in the "numbers" post, that would be awesome!
