 Recently, Welchenos had started to venture from his parents' den and out into the pride lands all on his own.
The most interesting place he had discovered, by far, was the beach. His mom had tried to explain how it was sacred, and he guessed he thought it was sacred too, whatever that meant, but what was really great about it was all the stuff. There were birds and more birds and teeny little crabs that walked all funny and shells and all kinds of other stuff.
He had just discovered if he shut his mouth and didn't breathe in his nose he could stick his head into the tide pools and open his eyes and see what was going on in the pools as well. That was how he stood now - rump in the air, head in the water, and trying to stay under long enough to count all the tiny little crabs that scurried away from the furry-faced intruder.

 Even though everyday was a new day, the bright red lion marred with the yellow markings did the same routine pretty much every day. He would not sleep in a den, but rather outside, under a tree. He was close enough to the water to hear waves and to feel the saltiness of the sea without actually getting drenched by the water. It was the sounds, the smells and the site that had unlocked some his memories of who he was many years ago, and he appreciated it dearly.
Today’s journey from his sleeping spot to the beach was a little different. Instead of being a quiet afternoon of just the waves crashing against the shore, the golden eyes of the crimson males had caught sight of a small pink and white cub playing in a tide pool. A smile broke upon his maw as he walked towards the little child. He wished he could’ve remembered if he played in the water when he was a cub, but those were still memories that would probably be locked away forever.
He stood besides the cub, watching as his head stayed under the water, every now and then a small bubble or two would surface. Down below the water surface, small scurrying crabs could be seen.
His mouth slowly lowered to the water, just enough to keep his nose above the surface. “What’re you doing?” was his intended question to ask, but it was muffled by the water; he wasn’t sure how well the question would be understood.

Welchenos heard a "blurble blurble blurble" by his ear, and turned to see a warmly colored lion standing by him outside of the pool. He pulled his head out of the water and gave his ears a good shake to clear them out.
"Hi! I'm Welchenos! I'm counting crabs!"
With that he took a deep breath in and stuck his head back into the water. Unfortunately, the crabs had all run around and he couldn't remember which ones he had counted now that they had moved. He pulled his head back out of the water.
"The crabs move too fast. And they won't stay still when I want to look at them. One of them tried to pinch me when I chased it on the sand the other day but I just wanted to take a look at it, it didn't have to be so mean."

With his maw out of the water, Quidytch chuckled at the smaller cub’s response. “Counting crabs, huh?” He mused, watching as the kid duck his head back in the water. The bright red lion had the worst luck with the small clawed creatures. One day, he had managed to surround one only having his nose clawed by one of its pinchers. After that, Qui vowed to stay away from those monsters. He brought a paw up to his nose, as if remembering the pinch like it happened just yesterday.
“Well, it’s nice to meet you Welchenos. My name is Quidytch,” he introduced as another chuckle rose from his maw. “Yes, they do move quickly, don’t theyY you got to be careful with the crabs though. Those pinchers can sting,” his nose twitched at this. “When I was younger, I learned my lesson the hard way.”
“Where are your parents?” His golden eyes looked around, expecting to see the smaller cubs family around.

Welchenos' ears drooped slightly. Caught in the act.
"We-e-ell, they aren't really out here, by the beach. Mom doesn't go to the beach very much and I dunno where Dad is and I dunno where Tycho, Adonis, Eros, Persephone, Helios, Deimos, or Oceanus are either. Mom doesn't like it when we get near the water though, so they don't always come to the beach unless Mom or Dad or around."
He looked around, as if scared of being spotted.
"You won't tell, will you?"

Quidytch listened as the young cub spoke, and rambled off a bunch of names. Must be siblings, the lion mused. The red male thought for a moment, before speaking to the cub. “There is good reason your mother doesn’t like you going near the ocean,” he said, hid golden eyes gazing out to the waves slowly washing ashore. “Sometimes the water will grab you, and pull you out to sea. And since you are so small, it’d be hard for you to break away from its grip.” He had never personally seen another lion get dragged out to sea, but he had seen smaller creatures do so.
“But I won’t tell…as long as you promise you will be careful near it. You don’t want to scare your mother now,” he grinned. Those were the good old days when he could scare his parents. In his mind, that was the sole job of a cub. His mentality on that would probably change if he ever had kids himself, but since he was not a father, his mind remained the same.
Welchenos’ mother would probably hate him if she had overheard this.

"I won't scare her. I don't even go into the water except up to my knees when she isn't around because I know she'd get real upset and then I'd probably be in trouble. Except the little pools. I go in them because they aren't all wavy like the ocean is but the ocean doesn't have as many little crabs and stuff in it so the little pools are a lot easier to explore."
Welchenos started circling the pool.
"If I could think of a way to make them stay still I could count them and find out how many there are, but the only time they ever stay still is if you sneak up on them and scare them, but it's hard to scare them in the water and it isn't very nice to scare them. Do you know how to make them stop moving?"
