Quiet. Peaceful blissful blessed quiet. It wouldn't last. It never did. Some mewling whining filly would come along in need of help, or some stallion would decide he needed a friend and would try to talk him into submission. Never failed. Grudgingly he had to admit it was the mares who bothered him far more often. Mares. Nothing but trouble. He should know. His daughter was one. Dau.... that girl. That mare. That foal. That basket he rescued. He was NOT Lian's father. Was not. No way, no how, no sir. He simply took care of her after that freaky mutant girl abandoned her. Seriously, if he ever got his hooves on that little coward! To abandon a basket like that, to leave her child behind. Of course he had no choice to raise Lian then. Never before had he had an issue with his own body or felt himself limited. But keeping after that child without wings was just about impossible.
.... He wondered where she was now. No. He raised her, he did his share. If she didn't want to visit and check in, fine. He had no reason to worry further. After all it wasn't like he cared or anything. Because he didn't. Absolutely not. He was as cold as the snow he walked through. Cold. Hard as the ice frozen loam. He loved no one, cared about no one. He was Pachu'a. He was free, he was alone, and the woods were peacefully, blissfully quiet.
It wouldn't last.

Arden was tending a small garden he'd planted in the middle of the wood. The herb garden looked well, properly watered and the herbs were growing on schedule. They would be most potent in a month, the optimum time to pick them and dry them. Spring fevers were coming soon, he needed to be ready to help those that came to him. Luckily, he wasn't be bothered much by Voodoo. He'd been gone for awhile, at least gone enough that he didn't want to be seen. A small favour here and there for once a month...That was it. But the rumours were growing stronger about him coming back, and it was slightly terrifying. What kind of shackles would he be put under now, what hell would his life become? Shaking his head, he continued to tend his herbs. He just needed to think about positive things while tending them, it did them better to have positive energy about them. He didn't want his anger or discomfort being transferred into their pliable roots. He had seen it happen before, the roots could suck up the atmosphere as well as moisture. His voice was low as he chanted to the Great Spirit, asking for a bountiful harvest to save those who came for help.

Pachu'a walked until the woods gave way to a.... garden? He blinked in surprise. Was there always a garden here? He mentally cursed himself for an idiot. Clearly it was not new. Gardens took time and work both. But the herbs... he recognized several of them. Would he be able to work out a deal with their tender? Was there something that he could offer in exchange for being able to harvest herbs at need? For some one who was rarely injured, who traveled and lived alone, it was remarkable, really, how often he needed curative herbs.

Arden heard soft footsteps behind him, and turning his head he glanced at the newcomer. Giving a brief nod of his head, he tended some more herbs, pulling a few weeds with his teeth. "My garden is looking lovely this year. Going to be a bountiful harvest. Along with the other 5 elsewhere, at least one crop should be left unravaged." He nodded his head as he pulled more weeds.
He'd already gathered some mushrooms this morning, and some thistles. Tomorrow, he needed to find some certain moss. But today, he would focus on this and his visitor.

He had almost stepped forward to help with the weeding, until the other spoke. His ears flattened back at the chatter. Why did every soq feel the need to tell Pachu'a their life stories? He didn't need to be talked at. his tail flicked in irritation.

Arden's saw the other's displeasure in his words, and went back to his quiet weeding. If he wanted, the stallion would talk to him and if not, he would leave. Arden could not persuade him either way.
Humming, he pulled up some more weeds here and there, pushing the dirt back to the roots.

Pachu'a watched. This fellow seemed to understand and didn't press him to talk. That was something. He watched Arden a moment then moved around so that he could be easily seen. He nodded to the weeds and flicked an ear. Did the other want help?

Arden saw the subtle movement and nodded gently as he hummed. He could always use help with weeding. He wasn't exactly use to company, he'd lead a solitary life for so long. It was nice to find someone who could stand nearby and not talk, he could still commune with nature and be social.

Pachu'a stepped over and began quietly pulling weeds. Occasionally he'd move some dirt with a hoof if he found exposed roots belonging to an herb.

Arden bowed his head after planting a few seeds, offering a blessing to the Great Spirit. These little seeds were going to be mighty plants, plants that with the Great Spirit's help would grow to save someone. They would do something useful in this world, help the bodies tainted with disease.

Pachu'a found himself relaxing as he worked. It was quite pleasant here, with this other for company. It was rare that he enjoyed the company of another. Almost exactly as rare as it was to find another Soq who could stay silent.
It was just... pleasant. Peaceful. Serene, almost. He found himself wishing that Lian was there to enjoy it with him. He shook his head a bit to chase away the thought. She would just talk. And besides, why did he keep thinking of her? She clearly didn't need him. Not at all. She hadn't come to visit once, not once. Not like he cared. Why would he care? He didn't care about anyone. Others talked. Lian talked. This, this was nice. Peaceful. Nice.

Arden watched the other male interestedly. He seemed to be tainted by society, something that he had often seen happen. Letting others get close, it was a mistake. A mistake to give in to the culture of society and accept it's corrupting force. A mistake to have given in to Voodoo.
But a mistake worth making? He pulled at the weeds again as he thought about it. Would he have done it again? With all his heart, no matter the pain. But if only there had been another way....

Pachu'a glanced at the other Soq again, to make sure that he was not needed, then went back to weeding, feeling better then he had in some time. He worked a while more then moved, to try and catch the other's attention subtly. He nodded hid head towards the water and flicked an ear in question.

Arden kept pulling weeds, the motion and familiarity soothing him and easing his mind. There had been no other way, he knew that now just as he knew it then. It was a choice he had to make. Even if he despised what he had to do, even if he had given in to the corruption...It was worth it.
Coming out of his thoughts, he saw the other stallion motion to him. Nodding his head gently, he indicated that the plants did need watering. This other stallion was quiet. He wondered what demons were torturing him?
Arden knew the look of someone haunted, and this stallion was.

Pachu'a nodded and looked about for a bucket. He had passed a stream not too far off. If he could find a way to carry the water back, that would be ideal.
