If there was one person that she thought would take her news well, Kali was sure that it would be one Howell Jenkins, wizard extraordinaire, lady charmer, heart eater; and much better known as Howl. After everything that happened, she did crave a happy reaction to her child's existence. She herself was becoming used to the idea, and, dare she say it...excited. And she hoped Howl would be too. Certainly, she couldn't think of anyone else who would be happy for her. Maybe Adalia, though she hadn't spoken to the girl to some time. But, really, there was nobody else.
Perhaps her reasons were a bit selfish - she was aware of this as she dialed the young (Or, not so young?) wizard's number and waited for someone to pick it up. Thankfully, it was Howl, and she smiled into the receiver.
"It's your lucky day, Howl. I've got a tub of ice cream with our names on it, and a secret to tell you. Just you." Perfect, she thought, twirling the cord around her fingers as she leaned against the wall; draw him in with ice cream, and hopefully entice him with the idea of a secret that was only for his ears. And, for now, it was. So she wasn't lying. "Do you think you can come over...?" She asked, hoping that the answer would be yes.

Now very few people knew that Howl, wizard though he was, was easily bribed. By two things, really. Romance, and ice cream. There was also something else, however, that convinced him. Kali had a secret? What was it? Was she secretly gay? Was she no longer interested in Lance? Was she finally going to make him god father of the child she didn't seem to know existed within her womb? He decided it would probably be the latter--though he wouldn't give up hope that Kali had lost interest in Lance.
"A secret just for me?" the teenager asked, intriged. "And ice cream? I'll be there in five minutes."
True to his word, Howl was there--four minutes and forty five seconds later. He knocked on the door. "Kali?" he asked, opening the door. "What's the secret?"

"You don't want the ice cream first?" Kali was already poking at it with a spoon, sitting cross-legged on the couch with the tub in her lap. A second spoon was stabbed unceremoniously into the ice cream's surface, and she seemed to be being purposely mysterious.
"How did you manage to get all the way from Barton so fast? Have you learned a new trick so quickly? Come in already, won't you? And take off your shoes. I just vacuumed." Yes, she was being purposely mysterious, and tight lipped as to what her secret was.

"I want the secret first," Howl said, crossing his arms. He studied her and smirked. "But I think I can guess your secret," he said equally as myserious. "Why don't you tell me now, and we can have ice cream in celebration?"
"Summoned a passing wind," Howl said. "Nothing new. It's an old trick. I've used it often enough. I can teach it to you, after you tell me what the secret is." He bent down to take off his shoes. "Why won't you tell me now?" he asked, walking over to the couch and plopping down beside the red headed mage.
"Are you about to declare your everlasting love for me, Kali? Because I don't know if my stomach could take it."

"Guessing." Kali said, pointing her spoon at Howl. "No far. Don't be foul, Howl." She didn't have to tell him to sit, since he went over on his own, and she quite happily offered him a spoon. "If it's simple, I'd love to learn it, but I'm supposed to be resting, so I've been commanded." She didn't seem to mind as she dug a nice scoop from within the tub, licking it off the spoon.
"I think your stomach should be fairly safe." She said as she played with her food, and her spoon. "Hopefully, mine will be too. I'm going to get horribly fat. I don't want stretch marks." She pouted as she lifted her shirt and looked at her still-flat stomach. Well. Not as flat as before, but she certainly wasn't bulbous. Yet. "Not from ice cream, though." She smiled at Howl, trying desperately not to squeal with girlish, excited glee.
"I'm going to have a baby, Howl. Lance's baby. I'm pregnant! Isn't that wonderful??!"

Howl took the spoon and stared at her for a moment. "Oh, I know," he agreed immediately to her statement that she was about to become horribly fat. He didn't seem to realize that it could have been taken as being rude. "Oh, the spell's simple," he agreed. "I taught it to Sophie before the djinn stole the castle, you know." Sophie had been supposed to rest too, but it hadn't happened that way.
He just hoped he wouldn't need to turn Kali into a cat to save her life.
He resisted the urge to roll his eyes and plastered a smile on his face. "Congratulations!" he said, hoping to sound almost as excited as Kali did. Kali was having a baby? Well, he had known that months ago. Kali was having a baby! His eyes glinted with much more genuine excitement. "I'm godfather." No question about it. Howl simply was.

It took a surprising amount of self restraint not to heft the tub and deposit it securely on Howl's head. He knew she was going to be fat. Whatever! The least he could have done was assure her that she wasn't going to become a bulbous monster. But, she supposed she would have to get a girl for that. Or whine to Lance until he said it. Regardless, she smiled as Howl did, managing to snuggle into him and hold the ice cream at the same time.
"Of course you are. You're my best friend!" She smiled, hugging him and balancing the ice cream in her lap. "Now! Ice cream." She pulled away and pointed at the tub, smiling. "Shall we eat the whole thing?" She didn't doubt Howl's ability to do so.

Howl returned the hug, grinning. She had agreed! She had made him godfather after all! "You're my best friend, too," he said. He lowered his voice, as if to tell her a secret. "And Kali?" he said, "No matter how big the baby makes you, you'll always be the most beautiful mage I've ever met."
The wizard stared at the tub briefly, measuring its size with his eyes. Eat an entire tub of ice cream? He needed to gain a few pounds anyway, or Sophie would begin to rant about how thin he was. (His father had gone on that very rant only that morning). He smirked. "Let's do it."

Kali flushed happily as Howl lowered his voice, hugging him once more and planting a kiss on each of his cheeks. "You're wonderful, and I love you like the brother I never had. Now. About that ice cream." Her eyes glinted, and she giggled. "Let's."
She only too happily dug in, but paused after a few bites as a thought occurred to her.
"I know it's too soon to tell, but I can't help but wonder what it will be..." She said, cocking her head to the side and sucking on her spoon. "I think the worst part will be the waiting...what is it like? You did this before. With Sophie." Sure, an evil Djinn had been after them, but she was sure that Howl could relate some relatively normal experiences to let her know what to expect...Right?

Howl beamed. Really, he felt the same way. Except that Kali was like a sister he actually liked. Megan had never understood him--but then, he had never really bothered to let her. "I love you too," he said. He took a bite of ice cream and swallowed.
Howl paused, and with a hastily muttered spell, he grinned. "It's a boy," the wizard said with finality. He went silent for a moment, before frowning slightly. He had done this before, hadn't he? With Morgan. He remembered Morgan, but the memories surrounding that were still fuzzy. "Dangerous," he said at last. "Making a pregnant, red headed witch--or mage, angry is extremely dangerous."
He thought about her question, this time more seriously. "It's hard at first," he decided. "Name deciding, buying things for the baby... It's worth it, though. Definitely worth it... I miss Morgan, Kali." He sighed and leaned his head on her shoulder.

Kali watched Howl, amazed, as he said that it was a boy. In his silence, she turned her gaze to her stomach, and wondered what he would be like. Her baby boy...
She snapped out of it as Howl spoke again and chuckled. "Red heads do," She noted, smiling at Howl. "Have terrible tempers." She shook her head, and frowned at her friend as his mood shifted visibly. She opened her arms as he leaned on her shoulder, and kissed his forehead. "I know you do...but he'll be here soon, I'm sure of it." She said, hoping to reassure him, even a small bit. "In the meantime...have you proposed to Sophie yet?"

"Everyone says he'll be here soon," Howl muttered. "But what kind of soon? Next year? Tomorrow? The day after? Months from now? Darcy once got upset with me for asking about him, you know? When she invited me to the caves. I think they live there... She said my life here wasn't so bad. I wasn't saying it was--" He gave her a gentle, gentle squeeze, being mindful of the newly forming human being within the mage. "Even if she does bring Morgan though, he'll be going to another family.
"Does the proposal five years ago count?" the wizard wanted to know. "If so, yes. ...No. I'm terribly nervous, Kali. I prepared myself and everything... I knew exactly what I wanted to say, and then I saw her and I blanked completely." He sighed. "Whenever I propose, the wedding's in May. May first. You and Lance are coming."

"I'm sorry, Howl...I can't say anything other than soon without lying to you. But someday, when your son does get here, things will be better. Even if he's with another family." She sighed, unable to imagine giving a child up to someone else for them to raise. Perhaps it was her own issues with her own parents, but.... She shook her head. No need to dwell on that. "At least, then, you'll know he's safe." She squeezed his shoulders a bit, and giggled as he asked his next question.
"No, Howl, five years ago does not count in the slightest." She sat up and looked at Howl with a surprisingly cheery smile. "You've no reason to be nervous, Howl! Sophie loves you, and she always has. She's not going to say no to you, I know it. You just have to ask her." She encouraged him, hoping that he would, and soon. May wasn't far away. He had to propose before they could have the wedding!
"Are you sure you're not counting your chickens before they've hatched? Not that I don't want to go. A May wedding would be lovely, it's just that...well, you need to propose before you have a wedding. Oh, it will be so CUTE!" She was excited just thinking about it, and she giggled. "Howl, you have to do it soon. I think I might die if you don't."

"I suppose..." Was all Howl had to say to Kali's logic. Morgan would be safe, he figured. Even Darcy wasn't stupid enough to put the toddler somewhere he'd be unhappy and hurt. For surely she knew that if that happened, Howl would kill her.
"It should," Howl complained. Five years ago should have counted, because he had proposed. Once. "I don't know, Kali.. I just have a feeling. What if she's really fallen for Prince Justin, like half the fanfictions about us say?" He smirked and shook his head. "I was more nervous the first time," he admitted.
"The wedding has to be in May," the wizard said with a frown. May was important. He'd first met Sophie in May. He took a bite of ice cream in attempt to show he was ignoring her, and swallowed. "There's soon again. Alright, I'll propose soon." Slightly concerned that Kali would die if he didn't propose, and even more so that he knew the baby couldn't possibly be born by May and so survive, he said, "I'll propose this week."

"Good. This week sounds good." She snuggled down in the couch, snatching a blanket off of the back of it to cuddle into as well. "Well. Depressing and not as surprising as they should have been topics aside, we have a whole tub of ice cream to devour. What say you we pop a movie in, or something, and get to that?" She asked, cocking her head to the side to look at him.
