It had been a long day already, but it was far from over. Garret had gotten lost a time or two (or three or seven...) and had had to backtrack a few times. Once, he'd gone down a zipline only to find that he'd made a wrong turn and had then had to detour back via four different trees! But he'd refused to ask for directions! He was to be a warrior, a protector of this land! Warriors didn't get lost!!
The young hedgehog paused outside of the rut tree home. This was where he'd been directed, as there was the marking that that old squirrel lady had mentioned. Puffing his chest, Garret strode forward, ready to sign up for the large and terrible Fangroot army. The youngster was convinced that the Rooters would sign him up instantly and probably even give him command of a troop! After all, he was a great warrior (in his own mind, at the very least) and would be recognized as such by others who were also great warriors!
The inside of the PaW HQ was far from what Garret had envisioned. In fact, it was nothing like it! Where were the great warriors of legend sitting around sharpening huge swords and battleaxes? All he saw were a few youngsters. Had he made another wrong turn?

In the center of it all was a ferret, pale of fur and on the verge of adulthood, the fellow cut a dashing figure in an adventurer's vest, striking paint across his eyes. He'd been told, in advance, of Garret's wanderings through the treeline, and had figured that if the hedgehog managed to get to the proper rut house, he deserved to be spoken to.
After all, there had been a large influx of new orphans, lately, from the orhpanage in Mossflower. Usually, youths were not one of Fangroot's largest imports, considering the deadly terrain and frequent parent and infant mortality deaths within the tribe.
Ending a conversation with a lightly-colored raccoon, his own face marked with paint, the ferret approached, a grin on his face.
"Not many spikers 'round these parts! I hear you're new," He thrust out a paw, "Baneberry Redfang, Commander of Fangroot's PaW." A pause, as he looked the younger critter up and down. "Y'here to join up with the upcomin' force, then? We don't take kindly to snoops."

Garret straightened shoulders that had slumped when he hadn't found the army he thought he was looking for as a ferret headed his way. The hedgehog started to take the offered paw, but paused when Bane introduced himself as Commander. Didn't you salute commanders? Torn, he grabbed the offered paw and shook while raising the other in a salute. There, problem solved!
"Snoop? I ain't no snoop. Granny squirrel tol' me abou' a group of fighters. I'ma here to join!" The hedgehog stated firmly, the stick he'd managed to pick up to fight off foes along the way still gripped in one paw. It looked almost as if it'd fall apart the instant it made contact with something hard.

"Hmm," Bane's green eyes flicked over the younger male, taking in his stance and the tone of his words. A salute! That had gone a long way toward pleasing the ferret, and he settled back, folding his arms across his chest before speaking.
"Alrigh', not a snoop, then. 'N I can tell y'aren't a coward." Wrinkling his nose, he glanced back toward the others in the HQ. "Are ya loyal, then? Once yer in, yer in, 'n we'll defend ya to the death, but ya gotta do the same fer the others, y'see."
Gesturing for Garret to follow him, he began to walk to one of the back rooms of the home, continuing to speak. "I, myself, have fought raptors 'n wildcats, full grown! Y'gotta be willin' to fight, fight, fight, but know that Fangroot takes care of its own."
Pausing, in what was clearly the "war room," he turned to face the hedgehog. "Y'see this stripe on my face?" A wild, toothy grin, "It means I'm never alone."

Garret stood firmly under Bane's gaze, his own brighter green eyes watching the ferret. He relaxed a bit as Bane started to speak. No, he was no coward! He started to open his mouth to say so, but Bane had moved on to asking him a question. Loyal? He nodded. Warriors helped others, right? That's what he would do!
The young hedgehog followed Bane as he headed towards one of the back rooms. His jaw dropped open and eyes went wide in amazement. "Really?! WOW! Did they cry when you won??" Because, of course Bane won.
He looked up at the ferret's face, at the stripe. He's seen it on some of the others too. So all the warriors had them? How cool!! "Do I gets one too?"
