Guardian:Sayuri Nitta. Ex-Maiko who came to Gaia when an attempt was made on her life. Is human, 21 years of age and has no magical ablities whatsoever. Caring, generous and artistic, Sayuri has become an adoptive mother to many 'children' since she started her new life in Gaia, and is always up for the challenge of another child to her fold.

Sister: Catta. Not her real sister but another 'foundling' that Sayuri took in. Catta is a ring-tailed lemur pooka baby and little is known about her background as well. Sayuri hopes they will get along!

The Fennec is a small fox found in the desert of Northern Africa (excluding the coast) which have distinctive oversized ears. Although some authorities classify this as the only species of the genus Fennecus*, it is shown here in the genus Vulpes. Description The Fennec is the smallest canid, only weighing up to 1.5 kg. The fox is 20 cm tall at the shoulder, with a body length of up to 40 cm. The tail is an additional 25 cm or so, and the ears can be 15 cm long. The animals are often a sandy color to blend in with their desert surroundings.
The large ears serve to help dissipate heat. The coat can repel sunlight during the day and conserve heat at night. The soles of the feet are protected from the hot sand by thick fur.
Habits The Fennec is nocturnal. During the night, it will hunt for rodents, insects (such as locusts), lizards, and birds and eggs. The Fennec gets most of its water from food, but will sometimes eat berries and leaves as an additional source of water.
Fennecs live in large dens (extending up to 10 meters), often with several foxes.
Reproduction In the spring, after about 50 days of gestation, a female fennec will give birth to a litter of 2-5 young. The young will rely on their mother's milk for about a month.
Population The fennec is rare and is not often seen. It is often hunted by humans, even though the fox does not cause any harm to human interests.

7th Aug: Diary entry; It was early this Sunday morning when I got the phonecall saying that, to my complete surprise my application to adopt one of the special children that karma was charged with finding homes for had been accepted! After I'd put the phone down, pinched myself a few times to make sure that I wasnt in fact dreaming I got ready to go and see karma to pick my child up.
When I got there finally, I was taken into a quiet area and this little bundle of big eyed, and almost satellite size ears (although I'd never say that to the poor baby, she really does look adorable!) was handed to me, wrapped into a lilac blanket, her bushy tail peeking out from it. I tickled her nose, and she bit my onto my finger. She has two tiny, needle sharp canines that have emerged already and they hurt! When I got her home I logged onto the 'net on my little laptop. I knew that as a fox she was unlikely to eat vegetables, and for now she would probably happily take milk (and she did when I tried her with a bottle), but I also wanted to make sure I would feed her right when she started on solids. Apparently they eat eggs so I'll try her with one for dinner tonight. I have named her Aini; supposedly Fennec is arabic for fox, and Aini is a pretty Arabic name.

Sayuri yawned, rubbing red and tired eyes. She rolled over in her bed, peering at the neon colours on the alarm clock on her bedside table; 'Damn..' she mumbled, finally registering that it was just past 3am. Had she been dreaming? No, she tilted her head, hearing the whining noise that was coming from Aini's room. The fox baby hadnt slept through the night yet, which given that Fennec foxes were nocturnal wasnt suprising but Sayuri was trying to get her to sleep at least partway through the night whilst she was younger. She padded into the little room, peering into the large baby basket at the yowling baby who blinked luminous looking eyes at Sayuri, waving a tiny paw as the whines petered away. Aini had gotten what she wanted after all, Sayuri was here and she nestled her muzzle into Sayuri's neck when she was picked up. Sayuri stumbled back to her bed, the fennec babe curled onto her pillow when Sayuri laid back down again, and after a desultory lick to Sayuri's head, Aini wrapped herself up in her furry tail and slept again. Sayuri sighed, and it turned into a yawn that made her jaw click; either she would have to change her sleeping habits or Aini would have to change hers...was her half-lucid thoughts as she slid into dreams again.

Sayuri sat back, wiping her forehead with the back of her hand and leaving a gritty trail of sand across it which had stuck to her perspiration. The 5' by 5' plastic trough/sand pit had been donated by a neighbour whose kids had outgrown it (it had been used as storage in said neighbours garage), and it had needed hosing down, and drying before fresh sand could be heaped into it. It was perfect now; she'd even found some large smooth stones and heaped them in a steady little hill in the centre. It would be ideal for Aini to play in, similar enough to her kinds habitat. Sayuri fetched the fennec babe who had just woken from a long nap, her ears pricking as she was hoisted up. Catta, the lemur pooka that Sayuri was also bringing up, attached herself to Sayuri's leg as she passed wherever the little creature had been hiding, chittering as she was carried along. Aini nuzzled into Sayuri's neck, washing the side of it with her warm little tongue before she was put down in the sand box. Catta scurried to the ground again, jumping in as well, her tail up high behind her as she scampered across the sand, chittering whenever her paws sank into the sand. Aini sniffed the sand gingerly, her ears flicking. Her tail wagged a little as she walked along the sand, and then when she came across the shade that the rock pile was lending in the afternoon sun, she showed a little more energy, scooping the sand into a hollow and curling into it, her thick tail covering her face. Sayuri chuckled, rolling her eyes at the laidback baby before giggling when Catta ventured too close and Aini pounced on her. They rolled around in the sand, Catta squeaking and trying to clamber on top of the rocks to get out of the fennec's way, and Aini uttering small yips as she played tug of war with Catta's tail. Catta squealed in fright, and Sayuri walke swiftly over, tapping Aini on the nose. 'No biting!' Aini whimpered and went back to the hollow, hiding under her tail. Catta scurried back to Sayuri and clambered up her again. 'There. Its ok. Aini didnt mean it.' Aini's ears flickered as if the fennec fox was thinking 'yes I did!'. Sayuri didnt notice, carrying Catta over to one of the gardens fruit trees and letting her climb around that. Sayuri went back to near the sand box and settled into a chair with a magazine, being mindful of both her charges, although Aini did little but stay curled up in a mood after being told off.

It was another fine day; not too warm but sunny with a light breeze. Catta had already been out playing for a while having had her fruit breakfast fairly swiftly but this morning Aini was playing the 'I'm a little madam' game and it had been a fight to get her to eat. Now breakfast was over, and Sayuri had cleaned up Aini and the kitchen of food debris and carried her into the garden, putting her on the grass whilst she prepared the play project she had thought up last night. On the patio stones she pinned down large sheets of white paper with stones at each corner, then going back inside brought out shallow trays and bottles of washable, non-toxic paint that she had gotten from a craft store and poured the paint into the trays. Catta had by now come down from the tree she was exploring, curiosity having gotten the better of her and peered into the trays. Aini had perked up as well, and when Sayuri placed the palm of her hand into a splash of yellow paint and pressed it firmly on the paper leaving a yellow hand-print, both Aini and Catta made noises of happiness and wanted to play. She lifted each of them in turn, dipping their paws in the paint and letting them loose on the paper to scamper about, leaving tiny colourful pawprints over the white expanse. Soon the paper was covered in prints, tail marks and even the occasional bottom print where Catta had decided to land in the paint and then sit down all over the paper! Eventually Aini was worn out, as fact Sayuri realised when the fennec snapped at Catta. The little fox baby was always cranky when she got tired, and so Sayuri took Aini inside for a quick bath before putting her down for a nap, and went back to take Catta in and clean the lemur pooka as well. That done she tidied up both paper and paints, finally sitting down herself with a frizzy Catta on her lap, and she relaxed with her copy of the 'Pride and Prejudice' book.

Journal entry:
Aini seems to be getting along pretty well. We've had some nipping incidents, I'm not sure if she is starting to teethe? Anyway, she's been mouthing myself and Catta sometimes. She gets a tap on the nose and a firm 'No' when she does it however as I dont want her thinking that biting is something she can do. She is beginning to travel a lot more, making lots of low vocal squeaking barks as she does so. As she seems to be alot more settled here now I have thought about taking her back to where I had adopted her from, to see if there are other children her age that she can meet and play with. Not that she doesnt play with Catta, but Catta is kind of different from her. Which reminds me..I also need to see if I can find out more about Catta from the satyr.
