Kinang, rather guiltily, snuck away from her sister late at night. It had been awhile since she had met Kuiba - but she had seen him, at a distance, the other day and waved. So she was going out tonight to see if she could "accidentally" run into him. Without Pinakip in tow.
Kinang headed toward the nearby watering hole, the most likely place she would run into anyone if anyone happened to be out and about. And if Kuiba wasn't around maybe she could ask around, and see if anyone had seen him. She'd just have to make sure she was back before the dawn chorus woke her sister up.

Kuiba had left his family's company, in a rather foul mood. They were on a job and his family had been less than pleased at his input. So what if he had tried to steal a piece of evidence? It wasn't like they were actually going to solve anything anyway! Feh. They shouldn't have left out such a nice bracelet in his view. Wasn't his fault it looked like it might suit Kinang - who he had seen briefly the other day and had shyly waved back, before bolting after his family in hopes they had not seen - and they hadn't. He wasn't keen on introducing Kinang to his family. She was too nice to be forced into their company.
Kuiba was lying by the edge of the watering hole, pleased at the silence around him. There was the sound of bugs, and scuttering at a distance, but few people would attack a hyena - especially when he had no food that they would want to take.
He pawed at the bracelet at his feet, but seeing it in the moonlight, it had turned an ugly puce colour and it just wouldn't suit the pretty Kinang at all. He pushed it into the water, listening to it 'plop' satisfactory. He'd have to find something far more beautiful for Kinang, he thought, feeling his cheeks heat in embarrassment at the thought. He didn't know why he wanted to impress her, but he did.

Kinang's heart sped up as she approached the watering hole and saw a familiar shape lounging at the edge across from her. She decided to play it cool, and maybe pretend she was just going to get a drink. Yes, she could just act like they happened to be meeting there. Accidentally.
Then again, he was right across from her. It would be weird if she didn't talk to him, and she'd have to be blind not to see him. He wasn't hiding or anything. She had to decide quickly, though; she was almost at the edge of the pool
Finally, she settled for calling out, "Hi, there, Kuiba!" just before she lowered her head to drink.

Kuiba glanced up at the sound of someone approaching, tensing in case it was a lion or some other cat who wanted to steal his watering hole. He perked up significantly, a goofy grin splitting his face when he spotted that it was Kinang. She didn't seem to notice him at first, but as she approached the watering hole she called out to him.
"Good eve'nin', Kinang," Kuiba called back, and scuttled to his feet, hunching his shoulders almost shyly. He had wanted the girl to show up, but he hadn't really been expecting her to. "Ah, how is yer sister and yerself?" He asked in an attempt to be polite. He didn't care about her sister, but he did want to know how Kinang was.

"Oh, um, Pina's good. I mean, I think I finally convinced her that maybe we could settle down near some other hyenas instead of just wandering around all the time. Although she is still pretty set on converting the meerkats."
Kinang started to move around the watering hole toward Kuiba. "I've been . . .okay. Mainly taking care of Pina, the usual. Um. How have you been? Are your aunt and your dad treating you okay?"

Kuiba nodded his head, bouncing it almost painfully in an effort to show her that he was listening - and he was surprised to realise he actually was. When did he start caring? Well, he supposed it had to be when he realised how nice and pretty she was. She deserved to have someone listen to her, not just rant at her like her crazy sister. "That's good," he mumbled, though he was pleased to hear that she might have convinced her sister to settle. If she settled, then he'd be able to find Kinang easier! "Meerkats still bein' stubborn 'gainst her ways?" He asked, making a joke.
He shifted as she moved closer to her, pleased that she was crossing the distance between them. "Me? Can't be complainin'. Been mostly avoidin' my aunt and da," he admitted. Which led to them being suspicious of his actions, which led to his aunt being more paranoid and insisting that he'd stolen things and well, it didn't turn out too well usually, but Kinang didn't need to know that. "Tryin' to stay outta their way, jus' ta cut down on the fightin'."

"Oh, yes, the meerkats just do not want to listen to her. At all. She's just as stubborn as they are, though."
Kinang settled down a few feet from Kuiba, to what she judged would be a normal distance for a female talking to a male that she was not interested in would be.
She sniffed irritatedly at the mention of his family. From what he told her of them, she didn't think much of them. "I still can't believe your dad lets your aunt treat you as badly as she does. He should stand up for his son."

Kuiba cracked a lopsided grin. "Stubbornness can be a curse sometimes," he said with a faint laugh in his tone, but he didn't openly laugh at her sister - that'd be rude...at least, he thought that'd be rude - and he really didn't want to be rude to Kinang.
He was pleased when Kinang seemed less than pleased about his family, though he had to point out, "he never wanted me. Can't blame 'im for not bein' a dad, if he never want'd a son to star' with." He'd been a surprise for his dear ol' dad, and one he hadn't really expected either. "Even if 'e should still stick up to me aunt sometimes," he added, with distaste. His father always seemed to agree with his aunt, that Kuiba was no good. Feh, that wasn't how family was s'pose to be, was it?

Kinang refrained from criticizing Kuiba's father any more; it wasn't as if she had any room to talk. Her father was a pup abandoning nutter who thought he was a god, or possibly a pup abandoning con man who had used her mother and then abandoned her. She wasn't quite sure which would be the better option, although she supposed it was nice that Kuiba at least knew who his dad was, and what he looked like. The only description their mother had ever given them of their father was that he looked "regal."
"At least he's acknowledged you, though." Kinang shifted a bit uncomfortably. She wanted to invite Kuiba to visit her when she and Pinakip eventually settled down, but she didn't know how to say it.
Finally, she settled on, "I'm not sure how long we'll be hanging around here once she's done with the meerkats, but it would be nice to keep seeing you."

Kuiba bobbed his head in response to her statement. Not that he would have let his father not acknowledge him, but eh, at least he hadn't had to fight too hard for the old man to realise that he was his son and to put up with him. Kuiba was probably lucky that his dear ol' dad was trusting enough to believe him - whereas he's sure his aunt wouldn't.
He did look surprised at her next comment, and quickly stamped down that soaring hope in his chest. She probably just meant as a friend, he realised sourly but he figured it was as close as he was gonna get, at least, while he didn't have someone to sway her affection - like the piece of jewellery he was trying to find but nothing seemed to match her perfectly enough. He cleared his throat awkwardly, trying to figure out what to say. He wasn't an eloquent male, after all.
"I'd like ta keep seein' you too," he mumbled, shifting on his feet, before barrelling on to distract her from his admission. "I bet I can help'ya to find a den...if ya wan'....you dun hafta...I mean, ya pro'aly wanna find one with yer sis. Nevermind."
Smooth....so smooth, he thought sarcastically, staring at his paws.

"Well, I mean, I don't know how long we'd actually be sharing, cause she's been talking about this stripey male she met and I think she might be thinking about having pups with him, I don't know. But the point is that if she had cubs I think the den would be full up, so I probably could use help finding another one. You know. Once she's settled in. If you wanted to. And if it wasn't a bother. Something a bit roomy."
Kinang tried not to respond too quickly to Kuiba, hoping she didn't seem too eager for him to help her find a den. She didn't want to sound like a hussy. Not that she was or anything. But it would be nice to see a bit more of Kuiba.

Kuiba looked rather stunned at her comments, pleased that she'd made them but utterly surprised that she had. Well, he supposed it made sense, especially if her sister was thinking of having pups with some male - might make things a bit awkward.
"I bet yah'd be a great Auntie," he blurted out, before shifting on his paws. "Uh, and yah, if yah need help findin' a den, then I'd be happ'ah to help yah find somethin'." He gave her a lopsided, slightly crooked grin, which was gone as quickly as it appeared, before he continue to shift on his paws, as if he wasn't sure what he was supposed to do now.
Suddenly he blanched. She...wanted a roomy den...did that mean she wanted pups too? She'd move out of her sister's place because the den got crowded, but she'd specifically said a roomy den, as if she planned to fill it soon. What if..."Yah got any ideas 'bout what kindah den yah want?" He asked, trying to see if she'd admit to wantin a den in a family area.

"Oh, eh, something, um . . . big. You know. For if I ever get a family." Kinang rushed past this to go on. "And, this might sound silly, but a sandy floor. I don't like rocky ones, they're so hard to sleep on and then you can't get comfortable but with a sandy floor you can just kind of make yourself a spot that you can fill up and as long as you shake when you wake up to get the sand off it's very comfortable. Aside from that, you know. A roof. Sides. Not too far away from water. Someplace nice."
Kinang ran out of things to say. A den was just a place to her. What filled it was more important.

Kuiba listened to her talk, fascinated by her words and also just enjoying the sound of her voice. She had a nice sounding voice, he thought, faintly embarrassed by his sweet thoughts but he pushed the thought away quickly.
"Betcha we can find all tha'," Kuiba said confidently, with a slightly crooked grin. He was pleased that she'd said 'if' she got a family. That meant it wasn't a sure thing yet, and that meant she didn't have some fella lining up to fill her den with her. That pleased Kuiba and he shifted on his feet, surprised by his own joy. He opened his mouth to talk but realised he had nothing else to say and closed it awkwardly. Oh great, now he ran out of things to say - he probably looked like an idiot too.
After a moment's pause, he blurted out the first thing that came to mind. "Mebbie I can fin' a den near yers." Oh, that was a smart thing to say, he scolded himself, slightly horrified. "I mean, fer when me aunt and da' aren't chasin' people."

"I'd enjoy the company," Kinang said, relieved that her babbling on about her dream den hadn't made things awkward. It wasn't like she was intent on filling it up right now, just . . . sometime in the near future. Hopefully. Not that Kuiba would be interested in that kind of thing, she guessed, but there was a chance. He might. You know, if he didn't have anyone else. Although he probably did, all the nice handsome males had a lady waiting in the wings, so it wouldn't do to push him. "And I guess it would be nice for you to have a home to go back to instead of just having to deal with your dad and aunt all of the time. A place of your own, I mean."
