School was hard... So many subjects, so many students, so much noise and bustle and reaching hands. Jove had already gotten in trouble for disrupting class several times in his first week, and by the time Spiderday rolled around he was ready to chill out. As much as he liked the peace and relative quiet of his dorm room, with his slowly growing mushrooms and soft places to flop and read, there was a thing in his closet that was starting to scare him. Until his foxfire Fruitloup stopped bringing the mimics out to play, he needed some relaxation time elsewhere.

He wandered to the edge of the school property, and then trotted off beyond, melting into his natural form as he ran. The wisp had almost forgot how much easier it was to dance along on little paws, ethereal fur blown by the wind... Over a bridge he went, his tail curled up over his back happily as he turned and trotted along the river. This was so much quieter than the school grounds. Nothing but the gurgle of dark waters, and chirps of venomous insects...

Hands stuffed in his pockets, Aedan strode away from the dorms, brows drawn in irritation, and muttering under his breath. As usual, he just couldn't seem to keep his fear under control. Today, he'd scorched the wall above his desk, frustrated with a homework assignment. It didn't even matter that no one else had seen him do it--it was embarrassing. It wasn't like most of the other students had extreme skills with their fears yet, but most of them seemed to at least be capable of not ruining their own belongings with them!

He was unable to see it, but in his agitation, his horn glowed faintly, a reminder that strong emotions were usually what prompted his randomly catching objects on fire. His parents had sent him here so he'd learn to control this--was he wasting his time, since apparently he still wasn't able to do so? Kicking a small rock in his path, he grimaced. Failure to live up to his own expectations (let alone his parents)was never something he relished.

Jove heard the clatter of the rock from behind him, and froze on the spot. Was it a monster? A scary thing? He looked over his shoulder with wide puppy eyes... and saw nothing. His ears swivelled around like furry satellites, but all he could hear was a very normal voice muttering something unintelligible from his vantage point. All he could smell on the air was water, pine sap, and... charcoal. Was it a charcoal monster?

The little ghost turned around and trotted into the bushes where he could safely watch the path along the river. If it was a charcoal monster, with any luck it would just keep on walking, and then Jove could continue his stroll in the other direction.

What he didn't realize was that it was really a terrible hiding spot. From a foot off the ground the bushes looked thick and full, but from five feet up... The leaves were patchy and he would be quite visible.

Hearing a rustling in the bushes, Aedan turned his head, spotting the small puppy almost immediately. Halting, he tilted his head to the side, expression lightening slightly. After a moment, when it didn't move, he shrugged, and walked a few paces farther, before hesitating again, looking over his shoulder to see if it seemed wild (i.e. fled immediately), or whether it might be someone's pet.

If nothing else, the puppy was a welcome, if momentary, distraction from his frustrations.

The ghost sneakily watched as sneakered feet approached. Charcoal monsters didn't wear sneakers, did they? Surely not. It actually looked like something a highschool student might wear, was it possible this one was just taking a walk, muttering under their breath as they went? He didn't recognize the voice though, or the sharp scent, if it was another first year they surely hadn't been in any classes together yet.

The footsteps paused right in front of the bush, and Jove held his breath metaphorically. He stared intently at the shoes until they moved on. But when they paused a second time, that was when the ghost looked up, and immediately realized his error.

His little eyes went wide, and he glanced up at the entire canopy of the bush with an expression of betrayal. The student would have been able to see him the first time he stopped walking... At least he didn't seem very threatening. With an expression of embarrassed defeat, Jove trotted out from the bushes and sat down on the path behind the other student.

Seeing the puppy dart out from the bush, and plonk down in the path, Aedan couldn't help but smile...slightly. It looked so...indignant, as if fate had betrayed it, sitting there staring at him.

"Guess you're not having a great day either, huh?" he said after a moment, turning more directly to face the puppy, and crouching down. "At least you probably didn't burn the wall of your room, I'll bet." He murmured, sighing in irritation as he remembered the black streaks on his wall. Holding out a hand towards the puppy, Aedan watched it, curious as to how close it'd venture, now that it realized he'd spotted it.

Jove's head tilted sideways, giving the other boil a curious look as he crouched down. It seemed like this one was a nice enough student, not teasing or making sudden movements, or trying to eat him. No, he wasn't having that good of a day himself. But he couldn't even imagine burning down a wall in his cozy little dorm!

He gave a yawn with a little squeaky whine at the end, and cautiously moved his head forward to give the boil's outstretched hand a sniff. He didn't want to get too close though, in case this charcoal monster still had a hankering for burning things.
