Sunset over the mountains. It was a stunning view, not that he'd admit that to anyone of course. Lonely, but in a good way. Maybe isolated was a better word. Secluded. It was obvious that this was a popular path, for just off to his left there was a bench set to look out over the land below. Letting out a slow, wearily contented sigh, Aulus moved over to it, sinking down gratefully and setting aside his staff. It had been a long day, he should have turned back hours ago in order to get down before dark, but he didn't regret it; when it became fully dark there would be amazing photographs to take. Besides, it would be good to spend a night up here in this secluded space with only the stars and Tortie for company...

Speaking of Tortie, where was she? Turning to look back the way he'd come, Aulus gave a sharp whistle. "Tortie? Where are you, come on!"

A little way down the path, Tortie raised her head and chirruped in response; she'd found a rock with an interesting smell and had been investigating it. Still, done now, and so when the second whistle came she happily trotted onward to join her trainer. It had been a good day today in her opinion; they'd seen and smelled all sorts of different things, it looked as though they would be staying outside for the night, and she hadn't been in her pokeball once. Sitting down beside the bench, Tortoiseshell gave a happy sigh of her own and licked her human's hand affectionately. She was beginning to really like this new region.

The beauty of sunset in the mountains was lost on Nyx. In fact, she hadn't even noticed that the sun was setting at all until she suddenly had trouble seeing what she was working on. "Maxwell, don't stand in my light." The scientist's head jerked up, her attention being drawn away from scraping dirt into tubes, and directed at her Aggron; Her Aggron was sitting patiently a few meters away, laden with packs and saddle bags, waiting for her master. "... Blast."

Nyx had meant to leave before sunset, so that she could get out of the mountains by nightfall, but there was no chance of that happening now. Flying out was not an option with as much gear as she was carrying. It seemed their only option was to hike down as far as they could and find a place to stop for the night.

It didn't take long before the scientist and her giant steel type pokemon found the path, and even less time before they came across a bench with a person sitting on it. Luckily, Nyx had the good sense to not wear her Team Rocket uniform on this trip, instead opting for hiking boots, jeans, and a red dress-like jacket. The woman who approached Aulus was very short, tan, and owned a large mess of fluffy white hair, barely held in check by a red scarf. "Ah. Hello."

Thanks to the heavy steps of her pokemon, he had been aware of her before she spoke. He had rather been hoping that she'd just pass on by and leave him alone, but naturally Lady Luck spat in his eye once again. Fine. Sighing internally Aulus turned on the bench to regard the white-haired woman, a slight scowl on his scarred face. Hu. She looked a bit different from your standard hiker, but then he supposed he did too... That Aggron was carrying a heck of a lot of gear; what had she been up on out here?

"Evening," Aulus said after some moments of silence, in tones that somehow managed to combine annoyance and mild curiosity, "I wasn't expecting to see anyone else up here this late."

Tortie was even less impressed than her trainer, mostly because she felt outmatched by the massive steel type. Still, maybe it would be cautious because of all the stuff it was lugging around. Narrowing her eyes, the absol treated the other pokemon to a whithering glare; she might not feel up to starting a battle, but that didn't mean she was going to act all pleased to see the hulking brute.

"Yes. Well. Lost track of time, you see." Why did this man have to be sitting on the bench? Nyx's feet were tired and she desperately wanted to sit on something that wasn't the ground, but this bloke reminded her of a few less than pleasant people back at the base, based on the slight scowl, and the overall look having a scar across your face tended to portray. "Ah. Would it be too much trouble if I could just... have a sit there?" She motioned to a spot on the bench not currently occupied by the human.

The woman had more pokeballs, but they were hidden under her bright red jacket, out of sight, and ready if it turned out that the stranger wanted to start trouble. Not that she went around assuming everyone was going to start trouble. In fact, the thought didn't really cross her mind. Most trainers were more than friendly, and she never had to worry about the notorious Team Rocket jumping out of the bushes and stealing her pokemon; She was Team Rocket.

Maxwell, the large steel type accompanying the white haired woman, rumbled and lowered itself to the ground, resting while her trainer chatted up the other human. She looked between the man and his pokemon cautiously; Her human might not have been concerned with the possibility of being attacked, but she at least considered the possibility. It was the Aggron's job to protect its trainer, after all.

"Hu. Right. Fine." Why couldn't little red riding jacket have wandered down a bit further, or on a different path? Still scowling Aulus shifted his staff and moved to one end of the bench, leaving a large space free for Miss Mop-Head... He still had his camera around his neck. Well fine, let her comment if she wanted, he could always say he was... Doing something manly? What was manly to take pictures of, other than naked women? Not much, and there weren't any naked women up here (sadly) so he'd just have to deal with whatever she thought of him. Wasn't like it mattered if she thought he was a sissy; he could soon prove her wrong if he had to... Although if pokemon got involved he was probably in trouble; he didn't fancy Tortie's chances against that great brute of a steel type.

"You've got a lot of stuff with you," Aulus commented after a moment, "were you planning to be up here a week or what?" Mostly he was hoping to distract her from anything she might be thinking about the camera at this point... But why would she be thinking anything at all? Why should she give a damn? Sheer arrogance to think that she was noting things about him and making judgements. Or maybe it was justified, maybe it was sensible to be on guard against... against whatever.

So the other human and her huge bodyguard were staying? Tortie made a noise of displeasure and moved to the far side of her trainer, her hackles slightly raised in agitation, but still restraining herself from growling. She wished they'd just go away, she couldn't let her guard down until they did; it was her job to protect her trainer after all.

"Oh. No. No... None of that is for a prolonged stay. I'm a, uh... researcher." That was sort of the truth; Researchers were a kind of scientist. She wasn't doing anything illegal or terrible up in the mountains, yet, but either way, the man didn't really need to know the particulars of what she was doing. Most people, when faced with the 'it's science' answer, tended to stop asking questions and be concerned with things that weren't too far over their heads.

Nyx had a seat next to the man and sighed. Her feet were about to rebel. They were not the feet of someone who went hiking, they were the feet of someone who spent most of their time in one room, sitting on a chair. Her bottom was a champion sitting bottom, however; Plenty of cushion.

"Are you a pokemon photographer?" She had noticed the camera, but there was nothing out of the ordinary about it to her. Photography was not particularly girly, nor was she concerned with what was and was not considered manly. Even if she did, she had no room to talk, she was princess crazy. The only thoughts that crossed her mind were that this man was probably in the mountains taking photographs of pokemon. Maybe he worked for a magazine. Her inquiry was put out with no hint of judgement, or ridicule, just simple curiosity.

"...Oh." Well, she didn't sound judgmental. You'd have to be a real raging paranoid loon to assume everyone was out to get you... If the hat fits, hang it up in a cupboard and try to ignore it. "I suppose so," Aulus said after a pause, slightly hesitantly at first but then with more conviction; "Yes. Freelance. Never been all that fond of orders from stupid men with weak chins and no imagination who only got the job because Daddy owns the company."

There. Nothing wrong with that, and it wasn't even a lie really; maybe he could sell some of his stuff if he had access to a decent printer, which he didn't. Well, online or something then? As a man short of money it was certainly worth thinking about... What about her though? 'Research' was kind of general, and he couldn't decide whether asking more would pass the time less painfully, or more painfully. He supposed all he could was ask: it was that or just sit here with her looking at him in that infuriating, fairly amiable, and non-threatening way... Yes he could decide that was annoying if he damn well pleased.

"So what are you studying then? Or is it secret, or too complex for my stupid testosterone filled head to gasp?" Aulus asked after a moment, a distinct hint of sneer in his voice. "Is it geology? Trying to find out the airspeed velocity of an unladen Swellow, be it standard or shiny? I think you'll be out of luck on the Swellows, I haven't seen any around here."

Nyx nodded, "Sounds reasonable. You're bound to make more money that way, I'm sure." She had a habit of being agreeable, even if she didn't really try to be. Logically, there was no reason for him to be defensive, or for her to think anything of him or his hobby, so she didn't, and that left her with two choices, be aggressive, or be affable, and of the two, being friendly was easier and therefor the more logical choice.

"Ahh... I don't believe testosterone inhibits one's ability to understand..." So, what was she working on? "I'm taking readings of various things in the area, and observations. Numbers of wild pokemon, plant life, soil samples, etcetera." That honestly was what she was doing, which very much supported her previous claim to be a researcher. Perhaps she was an environmental scientist? Either way, it was time to change the topic again, before she had to start getting into why she was taking all of the samples. Nyx was not a good liar, she didn't want to have to test her luck with this man.

"What are you taking pictures of up here?"

"Yea. I probably do." Probably would... possibly. Maybe not. To be honest he had no idea at all about how the industry worked, but he wasn't about to say that. Thankfully the mop-head didn't press on with the subject, instead she gave him a pretty vague description of her work here. Well, vague was fine by him, and understandable; in her place he'd hardly want to give away everything about what he was doing in a given place...

And then she went and asked exactly what he was taking pictures of.

Yippie.

Aulus briefly considered giving her an infuriatingly enigmatic overview with similarities to what she'd told him but on second thought he decided she had told him a fair bit, and that he couldn't be stuffed to be a smartarse anyway. "The scenery, and wild pokemon," he said once he'd decided that the truth was easiest. "The mountains make for some decent shots whether as the background, or the subject of the pictures... I'm new to the area though," he went on slowly, "so I'm not really sure what magazines and such might be interested in my pictures. You know of any, whatever your name is?"
PostPosted: Sun Feb 27, 2011 5:46 pm

"Hm." Nyx didn't often take the time to stop and smell the roses, as it were. She was more likely to stop and study the aphids. Though, looking at the sunset, she could understand how the mountains could be aesthetically pleasing. "Ah, I don't read many magazines, besides Reader's Compilation... But I think that there are a few companies based in Camphoreon. Local companies, most likely; Maybe some branches of the ones from the other regions." The 'researcher' ran a hand through her frazzled hair and sighed with a small grin. "I'm Emma."

"Well... I guess I'll keep an eye out," Aulus responded, trying not to feel too disappointed; the idea had only come into his head a few moments ago, it wasn't important... Finding a way to make money was important. Not right now though. He'd think about it later, or in a few days; he was fine for a little while.

"You can call me Aulus," Aulus went on, feeling that he might as well respond to the introduction. "My Absol's called Tortie," he added after a moment, turning to inspect Emma's Aggron. "Quite an impressive brute you've got there," if he was stuck with this girl they might as well talk about something he found interesting, "what's his - or her? - name?"
PostPosted: Tue Mar 01, 2011 12:16 pm

"Ah, that is Maxwell." The Aggron rumbled softly upon hearing its name. "Your Absol- Tortie- has quite the interesting coat color." Actually, both the Absol and Aggron were uniquely colored, though Maxwell's body was brown instead of grey, and his armor bronzed instead of steel-colored, things not too far removed from a normal Aggron.

Nyx wished she could just fly out of the mountains. She hadn't packed a sleeping bag or food more substantial than beef jerky and trail mix; Sleeping in the mountains would be an interesting adventure. At least she'd found this bench to rest on before getting to the hard part of camping out. "Are you planning to sleep in the mountains?"

"Mmh, she does," Aulus responded vaguely, abruptly distracted from pokemon talk by Emma's next question. He hadn't brought a tent or a bedroll or even a blanket with him. At least Tortie was warm and furry. "I suppose I'll have to," he said after a moment, "got distracted, lost track of time... Might be an idea to find somewhere more sheltered than this, if there is anywhere nearby."

If there was a storm in the night he was going to end up very cold, every wet, and extremely annoyed with himself. His earlier optimism about the coming night was sinking along with the sun, and suddenly it didn't seem so awful to have another person around; teamwork and all that. Maybe. Something like that.
PostPosted: Tue Mar 01, 2011 1:34 pm

"Ah... probably a good idea." Nyx reached under the skirt of her red coat and pulled out a pokeball. She had two flying pokemon with her, seeing as Tazieff had just recently evolved, but she didn't trust the Charizard not to fly off on a whim and leave them. The ball opened and a large Pidgeot materialized out of the white light. "Langley, find us some shelter. A cave or something." The Pidgeot bobbed its head a few times and took off into the darkening sky.

Nyx was not a person who got spooked easily, though there was something about the idea of being in the mountains alone that shook her. Even with all of her pokemon, what if something happened and she fell or the latches on her balls jammed? Or if there were a wild Onix that appeared out of nowhere and ate her? The scientist stared wide eyed into the increasing darkness, spying for danger. She was certainly glad that there was another person around, even if he was a civilian... but what if he was an ax murderer? One of the crazy people who escaped from a near by asylum (because there were always asylums in the mountains). Nyx turned and stared at Aulus, inspecting him for any signs of possible murder-tendencies.

Well, that was promising at least; without a flying type of his own he would have had to wander around on foot, probably falling off a precipice in the dark or something terminally embarrassing like that... Mophead Emma was looking at him funny. Aulus looked back, the frown that was never far from his face creeping back. "What? Do I have something on my face?"

She hadn't been staring too much before; why now? Abruptly Aulus felt suspicious of the white-haired woman again; a 'researcher' was she? Just happened to run into him, did she? She wanted something from him. She was probably staring because she was busy thinking about what she wanted from him, or what she wanted to do to him... Maybe she'd sent the pidgeot off to get reinforcements. Well, if she had, he'd shove her off the cliff when they appeared and leg it... Or maybe they wouldn't come until he was asleep in this cave she'd sent her pidgeot off to find. Yes. They'd move in when he was cornered, assuming she had sent off for reinforcements... Maybe she just wanted his camera. He'd knock her teeth out, the thieving b***h.
